System and method of egg fertility and gender detection

Abstract

This document provides a system and method for determining the sex of an unhatched egg. The method includes: tilting the egg from an initial position to an angled intermediate position and holding the intermediate position for a first predetermined time period; tilting the egg from the intermediate position to a horizontal position and holding the horizontal position for a second predetermined time period; operating at least one camera to capture at least one image of the egg while the egg is illuminated by a light source; and processing the at least one image to determine the sex and / or fertility of the egg based on at least one biomarker located in the at least one image, wherein the horizontal position is defined relative to the imaging plane of the at least one camera.
