Method and apparatus for video coding

Abstract

Method and apparatus of adaptive CABAC coding and context reduced CABAC coding for transform coefficients are disclosed. According to one method, a selected context variable for a syntax element related to information of a transform block is determined by considering a mode of a coding unit or a prediction unit associated with the transform block. Entropy encoding or decoding is applied to the syntax element according to the selected context variable. According to another method, multiple subsets of contexts are determined for a syntax element related to information of a transform block. Different subsets of contexts are assigned to different coding or prediction modes only for a selected region of the current transform block, and wherein the selected region of the transform block is smaller than the transform block. Entropy encoding or decoding is applied to the syntax element using the multiple subsets of contexts.
