AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing heat treatment systems using pulsed flash lamps face challenges in achieving uniform heat treatment of materials due to preheating effects from thermally conductive materials, leading to non-uniform heating of upstream regions.

Method used

A photonics processing apparatus and method that adjusts illumination pulses based on time-heating characteristics and thermal feedback to compensate for preheating, using a control system to modify illumination parameters such as intensity, duration, and movement speed to ensure uniform heat treatment across larger areas.

Benefits of technology

The system achieves substantially uniform heat treatment by compensating for preheating, ensuring consistent thermal processing of materials despite variations in thermal conductivity and material composition.

Abstract

Apparatus and associated methods for thermally processing materials are disclosed. An illuminator illuminates material to thermally process the material. To permit the illuminator to illuminate the full scope of the material, the illuminator is moved relative to the material and / or the material is moved relative to the illuminator. Heat from an illuminated first subset of material is transferred to a second subset of the material not yet illuminated. To account for the preheating of the second subset of the material, illumination of the second set of material is adjusted relative to illumination of the first set of material.
