Template-based intra mode derivation

Abstract

A video coder identifies a set of reference samples and a template region in a reconstructed portion of the current picture. The video coder computes a difference value between reconstruction samples of the template region and intra prediction samples of the template region that are generated by referring the set of reference samples for each of a set of candidate intra modes. The video coder derives one or more intra modes based on the computed difference values of the set of candidate intra modes. The video coder uses at least one of the derived one or more intra modes to select a transform. The video coder generates a predictor of the current block based on the one or more derived intra modes by referring the set of reference samples. The video coder encodes or decodes the current block by using the computed predictor and the selected transform.
