Abstract

A method for coding video pictures with picture-level rotation or mirroring using inter-prediction is provided. A video coder receives data comprising a first picture that is coded with picture-level rotation or mirroring that transposes the first picture from an original orientation to a first orientation. The video coder performs picture-level inverse-rotating or inverse-mirroring on the reconstructed first picture to restore the original orientation. The video coder stores the inverse-rotated or inverse-mirrored first picture in a reconstructed picture buffer. The video coder generates a predictor for a current block in a second picture by using the stored first picture, by transforming the motion vector and a collocated block in the first picture from the original orientation to a second orientation of the second picture. The video coder encodes or decodes the current block in the second picture by using the generated predictor.
