Abstract

An example device for retrieving media data includes: a memory configured to store media data; and a processing system implemented in circuitry and configured to: receive a manifest file for a media presentation, the manifest file advertising availability of segments of the media presentation, each of the segments corresponding to individually retrievable files including media data for the media presentation; send a request for a segment of the segments of the media presentation using the manifest file; receiving data representing an error in response to the request for the segment, the data representing the error indicating whether the segment will be available at a later time or will remain unavailable; and request one or more subsequent segments of the media presentation using the manifest file in response to receiving the data representing the error.
