Abstract

A polarizing film is formed by the adsorption and orientation of iodine onto a polyvinyl alcohol-based thin film. The polarizing film is characterized by containing a hydroxymethyl compound, wherein the hydroxymethyl compound has at least one partial structure of the following general formula (1) within its molecule and does not possess a urea skeleton. The polarizing film exhibits durability under high-temperature conditions.
