AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Compact near-eye display systems face challenges in achieving a desired field of view (FOV) with a small image projector, where the waveguide geometry imposes stringent requirements that often conflict with aesthetic considerations, and tilting the projector causes chromatic aberration due to dispersion.

Method used

A light-guiding optical element (LOE) with progressive deflection devices and a reflective incoupling surface oriented obliquely to the X and Y-axes, combined with a transparent wedge element to minimize chromatic aberration, allows for flexible projector orientation and efficient image propagation.

Benefits of technology

The solution enables a compact, aesthetically pleasing near-eye display with reduced chromatic aberration, achieving a large FOV by reconciling projector orientation and waveguide requirements, and ensuring high image uniformity and clarity.

Abstract

A display includes a flat light-guide optical element (LOE) having a first progressive deflection device and a second progressive deflection device associated with a first region and a second region. A support device, such as an eyeglass frame, supports the LOE in a face-to-face relationship with the user's eyes. An image projector injects a collimated image into the LOE via a reflective coupling surface. The reflective coupling surface is preferably oriented obliquely relative to the principal horizontal and vertical axes of the LOE. A multi-part wedge is preferably used to compensate for chromatic aberration.
