AI Technical Summary
The presence of nitrogen in inorganic sealing layers in display devices causes the formation of NH3+ ions when water is absorbed, leading to discoloration of polarizing plates.
Incorporating a metal nitride layer between the optical element and the sealing layer, with a conductivity of extracted water less than 100 μm/S, and using a sealing composition containing a cationically polymerizable compound, such as epoxy and oxetane compounds, to suppress the reaction of water ions with nitrogen.
The solution effectively reduces the conductivity of extracted water, preventing the formation of NH3+ ions and thereby suppressing polarizing plate discoloration.

[0148] The sealing composition can also be diluted with a known solvent to form a varnish. In this case, the solid content concentration of the varnish of the sealing composition is, for example, 10% by mass or more, and for example, 70% by mass or less.
[0149] Then, as will be described in detail later, the sealing composition is cured to form the second sealing layer 6 .

[0152] On the other hand, if the electrical conductivity is less than the upper limit, discoloration of the polarizing plate 7 cannot be suppressed.

[0158] A known polarizing plate can be used as the polarizing plate 7. For example, the polarizing plate 7 is obtained by dyeing a hydrophilic polymer film (eg, a polyvinyl alcohol film) with iodine and then stretching it. That is, the polarizing plate 7 contains iodine.
[0159] The thickness of the polarizing plate 7 is, for example, not less than 50 μm, and not more than 200 μm.
[0160] <Method for Manufacturing Display Device> One embodiment of a method for manufacturing the display device 10 will be described with reference to FIG. 2A to FIG. 2G .
[0161] The manufacturing method of the display device 10 includes: a first step of preparing a substrate 1; a second step of installing an optical element 2 on one side of the substrate 1 in the thickness direction; a third step of configuring a first inorganic layer 3 on the substrate 1 in a manner that covers the surface of the optical element 2; a fourth step of configuring a first sealing layer 4 on the first inorganic layer 3 in a manner that seals the optical element 2; a fifth step of configuring a second inorganic layer 5 in a manner that covers the surface of the first sealing layer 4; a sixth step of configuring a second sealing layer 6 on the second inorganic layer 5 in a manner that seals the optical element 2; and a seventh step of configuring a polarizing plate 7 on one side of the second sealing layer 6 in the thickness direction.
[0162] [Step 1] In the first step, as shown in FIG2A , a substrate 1 is prepared.
[0163] [Step 2] In the second step, as shown in FIG2B , an optical element 2 is mounted on one side of the substrate 1 in the thickness direction.
[0164] Examples of a method for mounting the optical element 2 include vapor deposition (vacuum vapor deposition), sputtering, ion plating, and plasma vapor phase growth (chemical vapor deposition, CVD).
[0165] [Step 3] In the third step, as shown in FIG2C , a first inorganic layer 3 is disposed on the substrate 1 so as to cover the surface of the optical element 2. Specifically, the first inorganic layer 3 covers the upper surface and side surfaces of the optical element 2 and the upper surface of the substrate 1.
[0166] As a method for configuring the first inorganic layer 3 , for example, the same method as the method for mounting the optical element 2 can be cited.
[0167] [Step 4] In the fourth step, as shown in FIG. 2D , a first sealing layer 4 is disposed on the first inorganic layer 3 in a manner to seal the optical element 2 .
[0168] An example of a method for placing the first sealing layer 4 is an inkjet method. Specifically, the material for the first sealing layer 4 is applied by the inkjet method and then cured. In this way, the first sealing layer 4 is placed.
[0169] [Step 5] In the fifth step, as shown in FIG2E , the second inorganic layer 5 is disposed so as to cover the surface of the first sealing layer 4. Specifically, the second inorganic layer 5 is disposed so as to cover the surface (upper surface and side surfaces) of the first sealing layer 4.
[0170] As a method for configuring the second inorganic layer 5 , for example, the same method as the method for mounting the optical element 2 can be cited.
[0171] [Step 6] In the sixth step, as shown in FIG2F , a second sealing layer 6 is disposed on the second inorganic layer 5 to seal the optical element 2. Specifically, the surface (top and side surfaces) of the second inorganic layer 5 is covered to seal the optical element 2.
[0172] An example of a method for disposing the second sealing layer 6 is an inkjet method. Specifically, the sealing composition is applied by the inkjet method, and then the sealing composition is irradiated with light to cure. In this way, the second sealing layer 6 is disposed.
[0173] [Step 7] In the seventh step, as shown in FIG2G , a polarizing plate 7 is placed on one side of the second sealing layer 6 in the thickness direction. Specifically, for example, the polarizing plate 7 is placed on one side of the second sealing layer 6 in the thickness direction via a known optical adhesive tape. The display device 10 is manufactured in the above manner.
[0174] <Effects> In the display device 10, the conductivity of the extracted water of the second sealing layer 6 is 100 μm / S or less. Therefore, discoloration of the polarizing plate 7 can be suppressed.
[0175] Specifically, in the display device 10, the second inorganic layer 5 includes a metal nitride. When water enters the second inorganic layer 5, the ions in the water may react with nitrogen to produce NH 3 + ions. Furthermore, these NH 3 + ions can cause discoloration of the polarizing plate 7.
[0176] Meanwhile, in the display device 10, the conductivity of the extracted water in the second sealing layer 6 is 100 μm / S or less. Therefore, even if water infiltrates the second inorganic layer 5, the ionic components in the water are prevented from reacting with nitrogen to produce NH 3 + ions. Therefore, the reaction between water and nitrogen to produce NH 3 + ions in the second inorganic layer 5 is suppressed. Consequently, discoloration of the polarizing plate 7 is suppressed.
[0177] In the display device 10 , if the conductivity of the extracted water of the second sealing layer 6 is 100 μm / S or less, discoloration of the polarizing plate 7 can be suppressed. The composition and thickness of the second sealing layer 6 are not limited thereto.
[0178] <Modification> In the modified examples, components and steps identical to those in the first embodiment are denoted by the same reference numerals, and detailed descriptions thereof are omitted. Furthermore, unless otherwise noted, the modified examples can achieve the same functions and effects as the first embodiment. Furthermore, the first embodiment and the modified examples can be appropriately combined.
[0179] In the above description, the display device 10 includes a substrate 1, an optical element 2, a first inorganic layer 3, a first sealing layer 4, a second inorganic layer 5, a second sealing layer 6, and a polarizer 7. However, the display device 10 may also not include the first inorganic layer 3 and the first sealing layer 4. In this case, the display device 10 includes the substrate 1, the optical element 2, the second inorganic layer 5, the second sealing layer 6, and the polarizer 7.
[0180] In the above description, the polarizing plate 7 is disposed on the entire surface of one side in the thickness direction of the second sealing layer 6 , but the present invention is not limited thereto. The polarizing plate 7 only needs to be disposed on at least a portion of one side in the thickness direction of the second sealing layer 6 . [Example]

[0183] <Manufacturing of Display Device> [Preparation of Sealing Composition] Examples 1 to 6 and Comparative Examples 1 to 4 Based on the formulation described in Table 1, the cationically polymerizable compound, cationic polymerization initiator, and additives were mixed and dissolved using a magnetic stirrer. This prepared a sealing composition. In Table 1, the unit for each component is "parts by mass."
[0184] [Manufacturing of Display Device] Manufacturing of the display device will be described with reference to FIG. 2A to FIG. 2G . (First step) As shown in FIG2A , a glass substrate is prepared as substrate 1 .
[0185] (Step 2) As shown in FIG2B, an optical element 2 is mounted on one side of the substrate 1 in the thickness direction by a plasma vapor deposition method (CVD method). In addition, an organic EL element is used as the optical element 2.
[0186] (Step 3) As shown in FIG2C , a first inorganic layer 3 is disposed on substrate 1 to cover the surface of optical element 2. Specifically, first inorganic layer 3 (1.0 μm thick) is deposited by plasma vapor deposition (CVD). Silicon nitride is used as the material for first inorganic layer 3.
[0187] (Step 4) As shown in FIG2D , a first sealing layer 4 is disposed on the first inorganic layer 3 to seal the optical element 2. Specifically, the material for the first sealing layer 4 (UV-curable epoxy resin) is applied by inkjet coating and then cured. This results in the formation of the first sealing layer 4 (10 μm thick).
[0188] (Step 5) As shown in FIG2E , a second inorganic layer 5 is formed to cover the surfaces (top and side surfaces) of the first sealing layer 4. Specifically, the second inorganic layer 5 (1.0 μm thick) is formed by plasma vapor deposition (CVD). Silicon nitride is used as the material for the second inorganic layer 5.
[0189] (Step 6) As shown in FIG2F , a second sealing layer 6 was disposed on the second inorganic layer 5 to seal the optical element 2. Specifically, the sealing composition of each Example and Comparative Example was applied by inkjet coating and then irradiated with ultraviolet light (1 W / cm², 4 J / cm²) to cure. This formed the second sealing layer 6 (10 μm thick).
[0190] (Step 7) As shown in FIG2G , a polarizing plate 7 (a polarizing film manufactured by Kenis, an iodine-based polarizing plate, 200 μm thick) was placed on one side of the second sealing layer 6 in the thickness direction via an optical adhesive tape (HJ-9150W manufactured by Nitto Denko Corporation). Display device 10 was manufactured in this manner.
[0191] <Evaluation> [Conductivity of extracted water of the second sealing layer] The sealing composition of each Example and Comparative Example was applied to one side of a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film (100 μm) in the thickness direction to a thickness of 10 μm, forming a coating film of the sealing composition. A PET film (100 μm) was then placed on one side of the coating film in the thickness direction via a frame.
[0192] The coating film was then irradiated with ultraviolet light (1 W / cm², 4 J / cm²) to obtain a cured product of the sealing composition. The PET film was then peeled off. This produced a sample for conductivity measurement containing the cured product of the sealing composition.
[0193] The conductivity measurement sample was cut into 20 mm × 20 mm × 10 μm pieces. 0.5 g of the conductivity measurement sample was then placed in a cleaned polytetrafluoroethylene (PTEF) container with a lid.
[0194] Then, 17.5 g of ultrapure water of known conductivity was added to the container, the sample for conductivity measurement was immersed in the ultrapure water, and the container was capped.
[0195] Then, the mixture was placed in a thermostatic bath at 85°C and 85% RH for 24 hours and then cooled to room temperature to obtain an ultrapure water measurement solution.
[0196] The conductivity of the ultrapure water solution was measured using a conductivity meter SC-72 (manufactured by Yokogawa Electric Corporation). The conductivity of the blank (ultrapure water) was subtracted from the resulting value, which was used as the conductivity of the extracted water in the second sealing layer. The results are shown in Table 1.
[0197] Furthermore, if the thickness of the second sealing layer 6 (the cured product of the sealing composition) is 100 μm or less, the thickness has no effect on the conductivity. Furthermore, using this test method, the conductivity of a sealing layer with a thickness of 10 μm in a display device can produce the same results as measured. In other words, if a cured product of a sealing composition with a thickness of X μm is prepared according to the test method, and the conductivity is measured, the conductivity of a sealing layer with a thickness of X μm in a display device can produce the same results as measured.
[0198] [Polarizing plate discoloration test] (Preparation of Polarizing Plate Discoloration Test Samples) A silicon nitride film as an inorganic layer is deposited on one side of the glass plate in the thickness direction by a plasma vapor deposition method (CVD method).
[0199] Next, the sealing composition of each example and each comparative example was applied to one side of the inorganic layer in the thickness direction using an applicator (coating thickness 10 μm), and then irradiated with ultraviolet light (1 W / cm2, 4 J / cm2) to obtain a sealing layer (cured sealing composition).
[0200] Then, a polarizing plate (an iodine-based polarizing plate manufactured by Kenis) was placed on one side of the sealant layer in the thickness direction via an optical adhesive tape (HJ-9150W manufactured by Nitto Denko Corporation). This was done to prepare a sample for the polarizing plate discoloration test.
[0201] (Polarizing plate discoloration test) The polarizing plate discoloration test sample was placed in a thermostat at 85°C and 85% RH for 24 hours, and the color change of the polarizing plate was observed visually.
[0202] The discoloration of the polarizing plate was evaluated according to the following criteria. The results are shown in Table 1. {Benchmark} ○: The color of the polarizing plate does not change. ×: The color of the polarizing plate becomes lighter.
