Abstract

The invention relates to a polarizing plate which is extremely thin and in which the occurrence of irregularly shaped cracks in the treated portion is prevented. The polarizing plate according to the invention consists of: a polarizing layer; and a protective layer arranged on at least one side of the polarizing layer, and having an irregular shape other than rectangular. The protective layer consists of a plastic film of thickness 10 µm or less. The polarizing layer consists of a PVA-based plastic film containing a bipolar irradiant. According to one scheme, the polar layer satisfies the following expression (1) when the single layer transmission coefficient is represented by Hx"%, and the birefringence of the PVA base resin is represented by "y". According to another scheme, the polar layer satisfies the following expression (2) when the single layer transmission coefficient is represented by ”x'T'ũ. and the in-plane hindrance of the PVA base resin film is represented by ''z" nm. According to another option, the polar layer satisfies the following expression (3) when the single layer transmission coefficient is expressed by i1x"%, and the orientation function of the PVA base resin is expressed by "Γ.
