Abstract

This patent proposes systems and methods for multi-dimensional beamforming and signaling processes for wireless local area networks (WLANs) using millimeter waves. Some of the proposed solutions include MAC (Medium Access Control) and PHY (Physical) frame designs for extended multi-dimensional enhanced beamforming protocols, including MAC packets and PPDU (physical layer (PHY) protocol data units) formats, with or without backward compatibility. These dimensions can be supported together or separately. In some approaches, the increased amount of data signaled in eBRP frame designs can be signaled more efficiently when the BRP (beam filtering protocol) frame size is reduced, such as through a minimum BRP time slot dependent on the direction or using smaller packet-based BRP frames. In other options, the maximum time interval of the inter-frame spacing between RPR packets can be changed to improve the performance of the BRP.
