METALLURGICAL PROCESS AND SLAG CONTAINING LI FOR THE RECOVERY OF NICKEL AND COBALT FROM BLACK MASS

Abstract

The invention is in the field of metallurgical smelting and describes a suitable process and slag for the recovery of Ni and Co from lithium-ion batteries or waste of this type, specifically from a block of slag. The composition of this slag is determined as follows: 25% < MnO < 70%; Al2O3 + 0.5 MnO < 45%; SiO₂ > 5%; Li₂O > 1%; 0.5% < P2O₅ < 10%; MnO + Li₂O + Al₂O₃ + CaO + SiO₂ + FcO + MgO + P₂O₅ > 90%; and, where (CaO + 2 Li₂O + 0.4 MnO) / SiO₂ > 2.0. This composition is made specifically suitable to limit or avoid damage or corrosion of a furnace lined with magnesium oxide refractory bricks.
