A smart waste management system for urban and municipal waste

Abstract

A smart waste‑management system comprising tagged receptacles, an on‑vehicle telematics unit, a driver mobile application and a cloud platform with a route‑optimisation engine and municipal dashboard. Receptacles carry unique identifiers; at collection the driver scans the identifier and the system records a geotagged service event correlated with vehicle location and a time window. Telemetry and exceptions may dynamically resequence tasks. The platform validates proof‑of‑service using geofence, proximity and motion checks, stores evidence such as photographs, and computes performance metrics including kilometres per ton, on‑time adherence and exception rates. Optional sensors provide fill‑level data for prioritisation, and an incentives module rewards verified, low‑contamination collections. The arrangement reduces missed pickups, fuel use and operating cost while providing audit‑ready evidence and data for planning.
