Abstract
Description
TITLEPURIFICATION OF E-1,1,1,4,4,4-HEXAFLUORO-2-BUTENE BY ADSORPTIONFIELD[1] This invention relates to methods for removing impurities in fluorinated organic compounds, especially methods for removing unsaturated impurities included in fluorinated olefins, and even more particularly to methods for removing impurities included in E-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluoro-2-butene.BACKGROUND [2] Certain hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs), such as tetrafluoropropenes (including 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoro-1-propene (HFO-1234yf), and 1,3,3,3-tetrafluoro-1-propene (HFO-1234ze)) and hexafluorobutenes, such as Z- and E-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluoro-2-butene (Z- and E-HFO-1336mzz, respectively) are known to be effective for use in refrigerants, heat transfer media, propellants, foaming agents, blowing agents, gaseous dielectrics, sterilant carriers, polymerization media, particulate removal fluids, carrier fluids, buffing abrasive agents, displacement drying agents and power cycle working fluids.[3] Unlike most chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), most HFOs pose no threat to the ozone layer. HFOs have also been shown to be low global warming compounds with low toxicity and, hence, can meet increasingly stringent requirements. Accordingly, compositions containing these hydrofluoroolefins are among leading materials being developed for use in many of the aforementioned applications.[4] Processes for making fluoroolefins, can lead to the generation of undesirable by-products, that is, impurities, in the final product, which are difficult to remove.[5] For example, one common method for removing impurities is via distillation. However, this method of removal is made difficult if the boiling point of the impurity is close to that of the desired fluoroolefin product or if substance interactions bring otherwise dissimilar boiling compounds close together (for example azeotropes). Further, even after distillation, it is still possible that small quantities of undesirable impurities will remain.[6] As a result, there is a need to identify impurities generated in the process of making fluoroolefin, e.g., E-HFO-1336mzz and methods for removing these impurities.SUMMARY[7] E-HFO-1336mzz may be produced, for example, by reaction of chlorinated hydro(fluoro)carbons, such CF3CHClCH2CCl3 (HCFC-343jfd) or CF3CHClCH2CF3 (HCFC-346mdf) or CCl3CHClCH2CCl3 (HCC-340jfd) or CCl2=CClCH=CCl2 (HCO-2320az) in liquid or gas phase with HF; or by isomerization of Z-HFO-1336mzz. Such processes are disclosed, for example, in US 10,479,745; US 10,611,709; US2021 / 0188743; WO 2020 / 206247; and WO 2020 / 206335. Undesired impurities include fluorinated and chlorinated compounds that can be difficult to remove by conventional distillation. This invention finds certain methods are useful for removing such impurities.[8] Applicants have found specific impurities can be removed from E-1336mzz by selecting removing agents. The removing agent may be an adsorbent chosen from molecular sieves, alumina, high surface nickel, silica gel and activated carbon or combinations of two or more thereof.[9] In certain embodiments, the removing agent is an adsorbent and the adsorbent is alumina. Optionally, the alumina is loaded with sodium oxide.
[10] In some embodiments, the adsorbent is activated carbon.
[11] In one embodiment, washing with water is found to remove particular impurities from E-1336mzz.
[12] The impurity may be chosen from 3,3,3-trifluoro-2-(trifluoromethyl)-1-propene (HFIB), vinyl chloride, 2-chloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropene, 1,1,3,3,3-pentafluoro-2-methyl-1-propene, 2-chloro-1,1-difluoroethylene, 1,1-dichloro-1,4,4,4-tetrafluoro-2-butene , E-1,1,1,2,4,4,4-heptafluorobut-2-ene, Z-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluoro-2-butene, 1-chloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropene, 2-chloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane, and 2,2-dichloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane.DETAILED DESCRIPTIONDEFINITIONS

E474 NI is a high surface area nickel, available from BASF. Carbon adsorbents are also commercially available from multiple suppliers, including Calgon Carbon Corporation (BPL AC, CocoPlus AC, CPG-LF AC, OVC AC), Osaka Gas Chemicals Co. Ltd. (Shirasagi AC), and General Carbon Corp. (Sulfursorb 12).Example 1. Reduction of HFIB concentration in E-1336mzz.
[108] In this Example, it was found that certain removing agents selectively removed HFIB from E-1336mzz to reduce the HFIB concentration.Example 1a. HFIB reduction in E-1336mzz
[109] A sample of E-1336mzz containing 0.2285% of HFIB was prepared. The desired amount of this E-1336mzz-HFIB mixture is loaded into a cylinder preloaded with a removing agent as recited in Table 2a, at the recited weight. As illustrated in Table 2a, the removing agents tested were molecular sieves, alumina, high surface nickel, silica gel, activated carbon and water. The mixtures were shaken well then maintained at room temperature for the times recited in Table 2a. The liquid phase of E-1336mzz in the test cylinder was analyzed by GC-MS-FID. The sample loaded with water was analyzed in the same manner, and it will be recognized the cylinder is “reversed”, wherein the organic layer is the heaver layer at bottom. Samples for GC analyses were pulled using a gas tight syringe and injected into GC.The results are presented in GC FID area%. Table 2a. In comparing the results of Tables 1a and 1b, the activated carbons were more efficient in adsorbing HFIB.Example 2. VCM removal by adsorption of Molecular Sieves
[114] For each molecular sieve adsorbent (removing agent), 50 g of E-1336mzz containing various impurities, including vinyl chloride (“VCM”), was mixed with 5 g of the molecular sieves in a dried cylinder. The mixture was shaken well then maintained at room temperature. The molecular sieves used in this test were all pre-dried at 320°C under He flow for 16 hours. Then liquid phase of E-1336mzz in the test cylinder was analyzed by GC-MS-FID at 2 hours, 24 hours and a few days after E-1336mzz was mixed with the molecular sieves. The result of GC analysis of starting material and material after loaded with molecular sieves are listed in Tables 3a, 3b and 3c, below using GC-FID area%. Table 3a. [116] In this Example, it was found that certain adsorbents can be used as removing agents to selectively adsorb HCFC-133a from E-1336mzz to reduce the HCFC-133a concentration.
[117] For each molecular sieve adsorbent, 50 g of E-1336mzz containing HCFC-133a and other impurities was mixed with 5 g molecular sieves in a dried cylinder, the mixture was shaken well then maintained at room temperature. The molecular sieves used in this test were all pre-dried at 320°C under He flow for 16 hours. Then liquid phase of E-1336mzz in the test cylinder was analyzed by GC-MS-FID at 2 hours and 24 hours after E-1336mzz was mixed with molecular sieves. [118] As can be seen from Table 4a, the GC results showed molecular sieve 13X can be used as a removing agent to efficiently reduce HCFC-133a, Z-1336mzz and 1233xf. As can be seen from Table 4b, molecular sieve 5A also reduced VCM, 1334mzz and 1122 from E-1336mzz when used as an adsorbent (removing agent).
[119] It can be seen that 13X molecular sieves are preferred over 4A and 5A sieves to reduce concentrations of 133a.Example 4. Purification of E-1336mzz by adsorption using Alumina with and without Na2O
[120] Several types of alumina were used as removing agents (adsorbents). For each alumina adsorbent, 50 g of E-1336mzz containing impurities was mixed with 5 g alumina adsorbent in a dried cylinder. The mixture was shaken well then maintained at room temperature. The liquid phase of E-1336mzz in the test cylinder was analyzed by GC-MS-FID at 2 hours and 24 hours after E-1336mzz was mixed with adsorbent.
