A control system is provided for a combine harvester header, offering multiple operating methods to control the header's cutting height and the resulting stubble height. The control system incorporates adjustable contour wheels to regulate the cutting height and resulting stubble height of a cutter bar assembly. In the first operating mode, the system maintains the stubble height at a desired level while maximizing the harvested crop. In the second operating mode, it maximizes the stubble height based on the crop height, and in the third mode, the system can perform both functions simultaneously. The operating system can function in the third operating mode, in which cutting heights can be predefined by geographical location in combination with target stubble heights or target input fractions that represent the fraction of a crop that is introduced into the combine during harvesting.
