Claims

The present invention relates to a process for capturing, sequestering, and utilizing carbon dioxide (CO2) through the production of magnesium carbonate products, wherein the process comprises: a) contacting an aqueous suspension of magnesium silicate with CO2 to produce an aqueous suspension comprising hydrated (hydroxy) magnesium carbonate; b) subjecting the aqueous suspension comprising hydrated (hydroxy) magnesium carbonate to a separation process at a first temperature to produce a concentrate having a higher concentration of hydrated (hydroxy) magnesium carbonate relative to that of the aqueous suspension comprising hydrated (hydroxy) magnesium carbonate produced in step (a);(c) subjecting the concentrate to a second temperature above the first temperature to produce a magnesium carbonate product that has (i) a reduced molar ratio of hydroxyl group (OH) or water of crystallization to magnesium, and (ii) a crystal structure different from that of the hydrated (hydroxy) magnesium carbonate in the concentrate.
