Description

EDGING TRIM Field of the invention The invention relates to an edging trim for building construction, and, more specifically, a prefinished edging trim for providing a straight edge and tile placement guide around interior perimeters and doorway / window openings. Background It is common in the building trade to use stopping angles to provide clean, straight edges and surfaces which can accept drywall compounds when finishing interior walls, particularly around corners and edges. A major disadvantage with conventional stopping angles is that multiple time-consuming steps are required to install the stopping angles and to get them ready for subsequent tiling and / or to comply with the requirements of construction standards and regulations. For example, a typical stopping angle installation process would involve the following series of steps: (1) securing the stopping angle to an edge, (2) applying setting compounds, such as plaster, to the stopping angle and waiting for the compounds to dry, (3) applying additional second and third coats of compounds and waiting for the compounds to dry, (4) sanding the setting compounds, (5) applying coats of paint over the dried compounds, and (6) waiting for the paint to dry before installing tiles over the stopping angle. Having regard to the foregoing, it can be seen that the application of conventional stopping angles in finishing interior walls is an inefficient and costly process, which involves multiple drying periods and the use of tradespersons over multiple days. The applicant has determined that it would be advantageous to provide a solution for finishing interior edges with improved efficacy and reduced operational time and cost for installation. The present invention, in its preferred embodiments, seeks to at least in part alleviate the above-identified problems. Summary of the invention According to an aspect of the present invention, there is provided a prefinished edging trim for use in guiding the placement of tiles adjacent door / window framing, the edging trim comprising a substantially vertical strip of metal sheet material having a longitudinal length, a cross section of which comprises a first edge and a second edge opposing the first edge; a perforated flange extending from the first edge in a substantially transverse direction; a shadow flange extending from the second edge in an opposing transverse direction to the perforated flange; and a spacer projecting substantially vertically from the first edge, the spacer being engageable with a side wall of a tile so as to guide placement of said tile in use. Preferably, the spacer comprises a transverse lip, which extends in the direction of the adjacent perforated flange. Alternatively, the spacer comprises an arcuate portion extending sideways in the direction of the perforated flange and downwardly towards the adjacent perforated flange. Alternatively, the spacer is configured so as to define a rectangular box with at least a portion of the adjacent perforated flange. Preferably, the edging trim has a longitudinal length of about 2.5 to 3.0 metres. Preferably, the strip of metal sheet material has a height of about 10 to 20 millimetres. Preferably, the perforated flange has a width of about 12 to 27 millimetres. Preferably, the shadow flange has a width of about 8 to 13 millimetres. Preferably, the spacer has a height of about 4 to 15 millimetres. Preferably, a combined height of the strip of metal sheet material and the spacer is about 14 to 35 millimetres. Preferably, the strip of sheet material, the perforated flange, the shadow flange and the spacer are integrally formed. Preferably, the edging trim is made from aluminium. Brief description of the drawings The invention will now be described, by way of non-limiting examples only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic partial perspective view from above of a prefinished edging trim of an indeterminate length according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention; Figure 2 is a schematic sectional view of the edging trim installed in situ according to one arrangement, and Figures 3 to 5 are schematic sectional views of prefinished edging trims according to additional embodiments of the present invention. 1t is to be appreciated that the drawings are provided for illustrative purposes only and are not necessary drawn to scale. Detailed description of the embodiments Figures 1 and 2 show a prefinished edging trim 10 for use around interior perimeters and doorway / window openings. The edging trim 10 is said to be "prefinished" because the trim is made from a suitable finishing material such as polished aluminium (gloss, satin, matte, or otherwise) so that further plastering, sanding and painting of the trim would not be required to complete the trim installation or before any further installation of tiles on the edging trim 10. The prefinished edging trim 10, according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, has a longitudinal length of about 2.5 to 3.0 metres. The edging trim 10 comprises a strip 20 made from a suitable finishing material, the strip 20 has a first longitudinal edge 22 and an opposing second longitudinal edge 24. When seen from a side sectional view, the strip 20 is substantially vertical and the first edge 22 is located at a top end of the strip 20 and the second edge 24 is located at a bottom end of the strip 20. In one configuration, the strip 20 has a height of about 10 to 20 millimetres. A perforated flange 30 extends from the first edge 22 in a substantially transverse direction according to the preferred embodiment. The perforated flange 30 is provided with suitable perforations in the form of a plurality of openings for securing the edging trim 10 to a suitable surface (such as a surface of a plasterboard 12). Non-limiting examples of perforations include circular apertures, elongated slots, rectangular, triangular, alpha- numerical and any other suitable opening shapes. In one embodiment, the width of the perforated flange 30 is about 21 millimetres; however, it is to be appreciated that the width of the perforated flange 30 could be about 12 to 27 millimetres, or of any suitable width. A shadow flange 40 extends from the second edge 24 in a substantially transverse direction opposite to that of the perforated flange 30. The shadow flange 40 is normally seated in a gap between two structural members such as a doorjamb 14 and a plasterboard 12. Because the shadow flange 40 is seated at a depth within the gap, it appears to the eye that the shadow flange 40 provides a shadow line therebetween as seen in Figure 2. In one embodiment, the shadow flange 40 has a width of about 8 to 13 millimetres. A spacer 50, in the form of an upwardly extending flange, projects substantially vertically from the first edge 22. The spacer 50 provides the function of a guide for the alignment and placement of any tiles to be installed adjacent and on top of the edging trim 10 so as to allow a side wall of the tile to engage or abut an inward facing side of the spacer 50. The inward facing side of the spacer 50 is the side that faces towards the direction of the perforated flange 30. The spacer 50 further comprises a transverse lip portion 52 extending from or about a top end of the spacer 50 towards the direction of the perforated flange 30. The transverse lip portion 52 is configured to engage a top surface of the tile so as to help guide and / or secure the tile in place. In a preferred embodiment, the spacer 50 has a height of about 10 millimetres. In other configurations, the spacer 50 has height of about 4 to 15 millimetres. With reference to Figures 3 to 5, non-limiting alternative examples of the spacer 50 configurations are provided herein. It is to be understood that this does not comprise an exhaustive list of examples and other configurations may also be suitable in accordance with the spirit of the invention. In accordance with one alternative embodiment, with reference to Figure 3, the spacer 50 is configured with an arcuate projection 54 extending from the first edge 22. In one configuration, the arcuate projection 54 extends upwardly and sideways generally in a direction of the perforated flange 30. The arcuate projection 54 may extend a length of about 4 to 7 millimetres. This arcuate projection 54 is an alternative form of the orthogonal lip portion 52 of the earlier embodiment, though it provides substantially the same functional advantages in guiding and locating a tile to be installed adjacent and on top of edging trim 10 as described herein with respect to the earlier embodiment. Figure 4 shows an edging trim 10 having an alternative spacer 50 configuration, in which a flange portion 56 extends outwardly and downwardly from or about a top end of the upright spacer projection. In one embodiment, the flange portion 56 forms a hook end at the end of the perforated flange 30. Corners of the flange portion may be rounded to improve the aesthetic appeal. This alternative spacer 50 configuration provides an attractive finishing, which provides the public with a useful choice in selecting prefinished edging trims while offering the advantages of the present invention. Dimensions of the flange portion 56 in the direction of the perforated flange 30 may be about 8 millimetres. Figure 5 shows an edging trim 10 in accordance with yet a further embodiment of the present invention, in which the spacer 50 is configured to define a rectangular box with a portion of the perforated flange 30. Specifically, the spacer 50 comprises an upright projection and a substantially right angled folding portion 58 extends from or about a top end of the spacer projection outwardly and down would be to engage a portion of the perforated flange 30. In one configuration, the folding portion 58 forms a unitary connection with a portion of the perforated flange 30. The folding portion 58 may have substantially linear side portions as seen from a sectional view; however, non-linear variations in the side portions may be incorporated into the embodiment without departing from the spirit of the invention. The spacer 50 as configured in accordance with this alternative embodiment provides substantially the same functional advantages in guiding and locating a tile to be installed adjacent and on top of edging trim 10 as described herein with respect to the earlier embodiments. In the preferred embodiment, one or more member components of the edging trim 10, including the strip 20, the perforated flange 30, the shadow flange 40 and the spacer 50, are integrally formed. In one embodiment, all member components of the edging trim 10 are integrated formed as a unitary piece. Whilst preferred dimensional values have been provided in exemplary examples described herein, it is to be appreciated that the edging trim 10 and its member components thereof could be manufactured in accordance with any suitable dimensions including any suitable thicknesses. In the preferred embodiment, the edging trim 10 is made from a prefinished aluminium material (for example, gloss, satin and matte). In other embodiments, the edging trim 10 can be made from other metal or metallic materials, or from non-metallic materials. The prefinished nature of the edging trim 10 of the present invention significantly reduces operational time and costs in installing the edging trims 10 during use as it would not be necessary to plaster, sand and / or paint over the prefinished edging trim 10 of the present invention in use or before the installation of tiles above the edging trim 10. Although the edging trim 10 has been described to be applicable for use with interior perimeters and doorway / window openings during building construction, it is to be understood that it will be equally suitable for use as edging trims for other interior finishing applications in residential and commercial building construction. It is to be understood that the term vertical as used in the detailed description and the claims refers to the orientation of the described components when the longitudinal direction of the edging trim 10 is horizontal. A skilled person in the art would also appreciate that the vertical items defined in the claims will extend in directions other than vertical when the trim is oriented in directions other than horizontal and that the terms are to be understood in a relative sense with that frame of reference. In the description and drawings of this embodiment, the same reference numerals are used as have been used in respect of the first embodiment, to denote and refer to corresponding features. While various embodiments of the present invention have been described above, it should be understood that they have been presented by way of example only, and not by way of limitation. It will be apparent to a person skilled in the relevant art that various changes in form and detail can be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Thus, the present invention should not be limited by any of the above described exemplary embodiments. Throughout this specification and the claims which follow, unless the context requires otherwise, the word "comprise", and variations such as "comprises" and "comprising", will be understood to imply the inclusion of a stated integer or step or group of integers or steps but not the exclusion of any other integer or step or group of integers or steps.

Claims

THE CLAIMS DEFINING THE INVENTION ARE AS FOLLOWS:

1. A prefinished edging trim for use in guiding the placement of tiles adjacent door / window framing, the edging trim comprising a substantially vertical strip of metal sheet material having a longitudinal length, a cross section of which comprises a first edge and a second edge opposing the first edge; a perforated flange extending from the first edge in a substantially transverse direction; a shadow flange extending from the second edge in an opposing transverse direction to the perforated flange; and a spacer projecting substantially vertically from the first edge, the spacer being engageable with a side wall of a tile so as to guide placement of said tile in use. 2 A prefinished edging trim according to claim 1, wherein the spacer comprises a transverse lip, which extends in the direction of the adjacent perforated flange.

3. A prefinished edging trim according to claim 1, wherein the spacer comprises an arcuate portion extending sideways in the direction of the perforated flange and downwardly towards the adjacent perforated flange.

4. A prefinished edging trim according to claim 1, wherein the spacer is configured so as to define a rectangular box with at least a portion of the adjacent perforated flange. s A prefinished edging trim according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the edging trim has a longitudinal length of about 2.5 to 3.0 metres.

6. A prefinished edging trim according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the strip of metal sheet material has a height of about 10 to 20 millimetres.

7. A prefinished edging trim according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the perforated flange has a width of about 12 to 27 millimetres.

8. A prefinished edging trim according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the shadow flange has a width of about 8 to 13 millimetres.

9. A prefinished edging trim according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the spacer has a height of about 4 to 15 millimetres.

10. A prefinished edging trim according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein a combined height of the strip of metal sheet material and the spacer is about 14 to 35 millimetres.

11. A prefinished edging trim according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the strip of sheet material, the perforated flange, the shadow flange and the spacer are integrally formed.

12. A prefinished edging trim according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the edging trim is made from aluminium.
