Description

OPACIFYING SYSTEMS FOR POLYMERIC TRANSPARENT SUBSTRATES

[0001] The present invention relates to the field of improved opacified polymeric substrates for use in making polymeric security documents such as banknotes.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0002] With the constantly improving quality of color photocopies and printings and in an attempt to protect security documents such as banknotes, value documents or cards, transportation tickets or cards, tax banderols, and product labels against counterfeiting, falsifying or illegal reproduction, it has been the conventional practice to incorporate various security means in and on these documents. Typical examples of security means include security threads, windows, fibers, planchettes, foils, decals, holograms, watermarks, security inks comprising optically variable pigments, magnetic or magnetizable thin-film interference pigments, interference-coated particles, thermochromic pigments, photochromic pigments, luminescent compounds, infrared-absorbing compounds, ultraviolet-absorbing or magnetic compounds.

[0003] It is known in the art to apply inks on security documents in several printing steps, including different printing processes using low viscous inks such as screen printing inks, flexography printing inks and gravure printing inks as well as highly viscous or pasty inks such as offset printing inks, intaglio printing inks and letterpress printing inks.

[0004] Security documents, in particular banknotes, comprise a substrate which may be paper-based, plastic-based or polymer-based materials or combinations thereof. While traditional substrates include paper-based substrates which may include security threads introduced therein during their manufacture, a growing number of countries changed from paper-based to polymer-based banknotes, due to the reduced costs of said substrates, their functionality, their processability, their durability, their resistance to soi l and their increased lifetime d ue to their more robust nature.

[0005] With the aim of mimicking the appearance and some properties of conventional paper-based substrates for security documents and with the aim of providing a suitable and printable background, polymeric transparent substrates may be surface treated typically on one or on both of their sides with opacifying layers so as to form opacified polymer based substrates, wherein said substrates have opacified regions and optionally non-opacified regions in the form of clear windows or half-windows which may contain security features to increase the resistance against counterfeiting and fraud. During the processing of said substrates comprising only polymeric materials, efficiency in terms of manufacture and subsequent handling may be compromised and thus required the use of opacifying layers to fulfill several functions different from aesthetic ones only. Such functions include adhesion, printability, reduction of static electricity build-up and the handling of the printed substrates. Polymeric transparent substrates are conventionally coated with opacifying systems typically comprising a) opacifying layers so as to obtain a white opaque background, b) conductive layers so as to dissipate  electrostatic charges on the surface of the substrate and c) acceptance layers so as to provide adhesion and a printable surface of said systems for security inks to prepare security features.

[0011] WO 00 / 74948 A1 discloses polymer-based substrates comprising an opacifying system, said system comprising one or more epoxy layers and one or more antistatic layers. The disclosed epoxy layers comprise fillers including silica, clays, zinc oxide, tin oxide, talc, titanium oxide and calcium  carbonate. Examples of WO 00 / 74948 A1 consist of multilayer structures comprising in the following sequence: one or more epoxy layers comprising TiO2, one or more antistatic opacifying layers comprising TiO2 and an epoxy top layer comprising an hydrophobic clay.

[0012] WO 2019 / 197798 A1 discloses transparent or translucent polymer substrates comprising an opacifying system, said system comprising one or more opacifying layers and one or more anti-static layers. The disclosed opacifying layers comprise a resin such as a polyurethane based resin, polyester based resin or an epoxy based resin and an opacifying pigment such as titanium oxide, silica, zinc oxide, tin oxide, clays or calcium carbonate and the disclosed anti-static layers are made of an anti-static material such as a polymeric material with sufficient electrical conductivity to at least disperse static charge or are made of a similar composition as the opacifying layers further comprising electrically conductive particles

[0013] The increasing sensitivity of the public to environmental concerns, as well as the necessary responsiveness of the chemical industry to environmental regulations such as REACH and GHS, have resulted in the formulation of inks containing a significantly reduced amount of organic solvent (volatile organic components, VOC) have motivated the industry to develop water-based, solvent-free or low VOC containing compositions.

[0014] Security documents, in particular banknotes, are produced using sequential printing processes involving different printing technologies. In particular, a banknote substrate is subjected to a number of different types of printing processes in series, each one being completed before the next step is applied, requiring significant overhead in terms of handling and storage.

[0015] Polymeric substrates for security documents, in particular banknotes, are known to suffer from a low stiffness thus leading to difficulties on the printing press during the printing process and for the handling of the printed sheets.

[0016] Failure of an ink to rapidly and efficiently dry and cure results in set off. Set off occurs when a printing ink which is not sufficiently dried or cured at least partially adheres to the back of a printed substrate placed on top of it during the stacking and / or storage of printed substrates as it comes off the printing machines. This is a particular problem during the printing of features on security documents, especially banknotes, since said documents typically carry several overlapping or partially overlapping features which are applied in subsequent steps. If the previously applied feature, e.g. a background image or graphic pattern, has not yet sufficiently dried or cured, the whole multi-step printing process is not only delayed but also the so-obtained feature may still suffer from set off or marking due to set off on the machine during any subsequent printing or process operations. During a conventional banknote printing process, offset security inks are applied on substrates during one of the first steps of the overall multi-step printing process, wherein the offset printing is typically followed with other printing steps including intaglio printing, screen printing, gravure printing, flexography printing, letterpress printing, numbering and inkjet printing. Printing of features on security documents, especially banknotes, is highly demanding since said documents typically carry several overlapping or partially overlapping features which are applied in subsequent steps as described above. Should an opacifying system be applied on a polymeric transparent substrate of a security document such as a  banknote and should said opacifying system coated substrate suffer from poor drying, poor adhesion or poor mechanical properties, the subsequent printing step might be delayed or rendered complicated.

[0017] Therefore, a need remains for polymeric transparent substrates coated with water-based low VOC containing opacifying systems that combine good mechanical performance and that can be easily processes and handled for subsequent multi-step security printing processes. Furthermore, it is required that said water-based low VOC containing opacifying systems advantageously allow good adhesion, printability and drying performance of security inks or layers applied thereon.SUMMARY

[0018] Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to overcome the deficiencies of the prior art discussed above. This is achieved by the provision of taking advantage of a kit for manufacturing an opacifying system (x10) either on one side or on both sides of a polymeric transparent substrate (x00) , said kit comprising a) a first composition for manufacturing an opacifying layer (x11) , b) a second composition for manufacturing a conductive layer (x12) , and c) a third layer composition for manufacturing an acceptance layer (x13) , wherein the first, second and third compositions comprises i) water, ii) a water-soluble or water-dispersible resin, iii) a white pigment, iv) a wax and v) optionally one or more additives, at least one of said first, second and third compositions comprises an anti-static agent, and at least two of said first, second and third compositions comprise a mica compound.

[0019] The term “kit” is intended to mean that the first composition, the second composition and the third composition described herein are provided separately, typically in separate containers, and then preferably packaged together. In this manner, they can be conveniently used for manufacturing the opacifying system (x10) described herein on the polymeric transparent substrate (x00) described herein.

[0020] The opacifying systems (x10) described herein are particularly suitable for polymeric transparent substrates and for security documents comprising said substrates.

[0021] Also described herein are polymeric transparent substrates (x00) comprising one or two of the opacifying systems (x10-a, x10-b) described herein, each layer of said systems being in a dried state, each system independently comprising three layers (x11, x12 and x13) :

[0022] a first layer being the opacifying layer (x11) and consisting of a dried layer made of the first composition described herein,

[0023] a second layer being the conductive layer (x12) and consisting of a dried layer made of the second composition described herein, and

[0024] a third layer being the acceptance layer (x13) consisting of a dried layer made of the third composition described herein,

[0025] the first layer (x11) being at least partially in direct contact with the polymeric transparent substrate (x00) , the second layer (x12) being at least partially in direct contact with the first layer (x11) and the third layer (x13) , and the third layer (x13) being at least partially in direct contact with the second layer (x12) and facing the environment.

[0026] Also described herein are security documents, in particular banknotes, comprising the polymeric transparent substrate (x00) described herein and the one or two opacifying systems (x10-a, x10-b) described herein and further comprising one or more security features (x14) , in particular printed security features, at least partially covering the third layer (x13) .

[0027] The water-based or low VOC containing opacifying systems described herein advantageously allow the production of coated polymeric transparent substrates combining good chemical, and physical properties. Moreover, said polymeric transparent substrates can be easily handled and processed for subsequent multi-step security printing processes and allow an improvement of the drying performance of subsequently printed security features at least partially applied onto it.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS

[0095] The polymeric transparent substrates (x00) carrying the opacifying systems (x10) described herein are particularly suitable to be subsequently processed by one or more security printing processes preferably selected from the group consisting of offset printing processes, intaglio printing processes, letterpress printing processes, numbering processes, screen printing processes, flexography printing processes and inkjet printing processes. Moreover, polymeric transparent substrates (x00) carrying the opacifying systems (x10, x10-a, x10-b) described herein are particularly suitable to be subsequently processed by the printing of oxidative offset inks and oxidative intaglio inks. Oxidative drying inks dry by oxidation in the presence of oxygen, in particular in the presence of the oxygen of the atmosphere. During the drying process, the oxygen combines with one or more components of the ink, converting the ink to a semi-solid or a solid state. The process is typically accelerated by the use of driers also referred in the art as catalysts, siccative agents, desiccatives or dessicators, such as metallic salts and / or by the application of a thermal treatment. Oxidative drying inks may suffer from a so-called “set-off” problem which is the transfer of ink from one printed sheet to the back side of the next following printed sheet in the stack, or to the back of an endless sheet in a web. The use of the opacifying systems (x10, x10-a, x10-b) described herein ensures a good drying performance and / or advantageously allows an improvement of the drying performance of printed security features (x14) at least partially applied onto it, said printed security features (x14) made of the security inks described herein, in particular made of oxidative offset inks and oxidative intaglio inks, without changing the manufacturing process conditions such as a temperature increase that might provoke undesired film distortion.

[0096] EXAMPLES

[0097] The present invention is now described in more details with reference to non-limiting examples. The Examples below provide more details for the production of polymeric transparent substrates (x00) carrying two opacifying systems (x10-a, x10-b) , said systems being independently applied on each side of the substrate (x00) as shown for example in Fig. 1A.

[0098] Tables 1-3 disclose the first, second and third compositions used to prepare the Examples E1-E7 and the Comparative Examples C0-C2, with first layers (x11) being opacifying layers and being prepared with the first compositions disclosed in Table 1, second layers (x12) being conductive layers being prepared with the second compositions disclosed in Table 2, and third layers (x13) being acceptance layers and being prepared with the compositions.

[0099] The first, second and third compositions were individually prepared by mixing the ingredients listed in Table 1-3 in a Lab mixer for 10 min at 700 rpm (for compositions I1-I4 and I8-I12) or in a Speedmixer for 4 min at 2500 rpm (for compositions I5-I7) .

[0100] The polymeric transparent substrates (x00) used to produce the Examples E1-E7 and the Comparative Examples C0-C2 was a Corona treated BOPP substrate having a thickness of 72 microns.

[0101] Preparation of the Examples and comparative Examples

[0102] In order to mimic an industrial application of the first, second and third compositions by a gravure printing, the compositions of Table 1-3 were applied sequentially on top of each other on the polymeric transparent substrates (x00) , starting with the first compositions from Table 1, by hand-coating using a coater Nr 2 so as form layer having a thickness of 12 microns and drying by heat at 50℃ for about 25 seconds, followed with the application and drying of the second compositions of Table 2 and followed with the application and drying of the third compositions of Table 3 so as to form the first opacifying system (x10-a) . Subsequently to the preparation of the first opacifying system (x10-a) , a second opacifying system (x10-b) was prepared in the same way but on the opposite side of the substrate (x00) . Each of said layers of both opacifying systems have a thickness of about 4.5 microns.

[0103] Table 4 provides the combinations of compositions of Tables 1-3 used to prepare the Examples and the comparative Examples.

[0104] Measurement of stiffness of the coated substrates (Fig. 3)

[0105] In order to assess the stiffness of polymeric transparent substrates (300) carrying an opacifying system (310-a, 310-b) on each side of the substrate (x30) (E1-E7) and of the Comparative Examples C0-C2, the samples (dimensions: 10 cm x 5 cm) were fixed on a support, such that 4 mm of the substrates along their length was on the support and the remaining 96 mm were hanging outside of the support (as schematically illustrated in Fig. 3, said Fig. 3 being not on scale) , wherein said stiffness was measured in the printing-machine direction. The distance (d) between the edge of the substrate and a fixed point (see Fig. 3) was measured. A bigger distance (d) refers to a stiffer substrate.

[0106] Gloss value (E1-E7)

[0107] The third layers (x13) of the Examples E1-E7 exhibited a gloss value of about 5, said gloss value being measured with a glossmeter from Byk at 60°.
