[0036] A child restraint 10, in accordance with the present disclosure, is shown in Figs. 1-25 includes a juvenile seat 14 and a seat foundation 16. In some embodiments, the child restrain 10 further includes an adjustable footplate 3 that is moveable relative to the seat foundation to adjust a tilt angle of the seat foundation 16 and the juvenile seat 14 relative to an underlying vehicle seat to which the child restraint 10 is secured as shown in Figs. 1-10. In some embodiments, the child restraint 10 further includes an attachment indicator unit 100 configured to provide one or more indications of an attachment status of the child restraint 10 to the underlying vehicle seat as shown in Figs. 11-14 and Figs. 22-25. In some embodiments, the seat foundation 16 includes a lower body 1 and an upper body 11 moveable relative to the lower body 1 as shown in Figs. 15-21.
[0037] The seat foundation 16 has a lower surface configured to rest on a vehicle seat. The adjustable footplate 3 is coupled to the seat foundation 16 and has a lower surface configured to engage with the vehicle seat. The adjustable footplate 3 is movable relative to the seat foundation 16 between a stored position and a deployed position. In the stored position, the adjustable footplate 3 extends through an aperture formed in the lower surface of the seat foundation 16 and is received within a cavity 101 formed in the seat foundation 16. In the deployed position, the adjustable footplate 3 is at least partially withdrawn from the cavity 101 and the lower surface of the adjustable foot 3 is offset from the lower surface of the seat foundation 16. In some embodiments, the lower surfaces of both the seat foundation 16 and the adjustable footplate 3 are aligned such that an outer perimeter of the lower surface of the adjustable footplate 3 is flush with the lower surface of the seat foundation 16 when the adjustable footplate 3 is in the stored position.
[0038] In illustrative embodiments, the child restraint 10 further includes a tilt controller 18 coupled between the seat foundation 16 and the adjustable footplate 3 as shown in Figs. 4-10. The tilt controller 18 is configured to control movement of the adjustable footplate 3 relative to the seat foundation 16 between the stored position and the deployed position so that the seat foundation 16 and the juvenile seat 14 assume the untilted position and the tilted position. When the adjustable footplate 3 is in the stored position, the seat foundation assumes the untilted position and a front end 17 of the seat foundation 16 is a first distance from the vehicle seat. When the adjustable footplate 3 is in the deployed position, the seat foundation 16 assumes the tilted position and the front end of the seat foundation 16 a second distance from the vehicle seat greater than the first distance.
[0039] The lower surface of the seat foundation 16 has a first angle of inclination relative to the vehicle seat in the untilted position and a second angle of inclination relative to the vehicle seat in the tilted position. The second angle of inclination is greater than the first angle of inclination so that an opposite rear end 19 of the seat foundation can be oriented toward a seat bite region of the vehicle seat (i.e. the point where the cushion and backrest of the vehicle seat meet). Some vehicle seats include anchor points that are used to secure a child restraint to the vehicle seat. In some seats, the anchor points are located within or adjacent to the seat bite region and may be hard to access with rigid seat attachment systems, such as anchor beams 8, 8 included in child restraint 10 and configured to extend rearwardly therefrom. In other words, the anchor points can sometimes be located deeply within the seat bite region or another cavity near the seat bite region which does not align well with the anchor beams 8, 8. Some child restraints include structures that elevate the rear end of the seat which would exasperate such a situation. The adjustable footplate 3 of the illustrative embodiment is configured to elevate the front end of the seat foundation 16 to orient the anchor beams 8, 8 toward the anchor points, if needed.
[0040] The tilt controller 18 includes an actuator handle 4 coupled to the seat foundation for movement relative thereto, a plate lock 40 coupled to the actuator handle 4, and a footplate support unit 50 interconnecting the adjustable footplate and the seat foundation as shown in Figs. 4-10. The actuator handle 4 is configured to be griped and moved by a user to unlock the adjustable footplate 3 for movement relative to the seat foundation 16 between the stored position and the deployed position. The plate lock 40 is moveable between a locked position in which movement of the adjustable foot plate 3 relative to the seat foundation 16 is blocked and an unlocked state in which the adjustable footplate 3 is free to move relative to the seat foundation 16. The footplate support unit 50 is configured to position the adjustable footplate 3 at the second angle of inclination relative to the lower surface of the seat foundation 16 in the tilted position.
[0041] The footplate support unit 50 includes a front support 51 and a rear support 52 as shown in Figs. 4-10. The front support 51 and the rear support 52 are pivotable relative to the adjustable footplate 3 and / or the seat foundation 16 when the plate lock 40 is in the unlocked position. The front support 51 has a first length and the rear support 52 has a second length less than the first length.
[0042] The front support 51 and the rear support 52 are each configured to pivot in a first direction relative to the seat foundation 16 as the adjustable footplate 3 changes from the stored position to the deployed position. The front support 51 is configured to pivot a first angular distance as the adjustable footplate 3 changes from the stored position to the deployed position. The rear support 52 is configured to pivot a second angular distance, greater than the first angular distance, as the adjustable footplate 3 changes from the stored position to the deployed position.
[0043] The front support 51 includes a front support base 54 coupled to the adjustable footplate 3, a first support linkage 56 interconnecting the front support base 54 and the seat foundation 16, and a second support linkage 58 interconnecting the front support base 54 and the seat foundation 16. The first and second support linkages 56, 58 are spaced apart from one another along the front support base 54 to form a forked arrangement to provide clearance for the actuator handle 4. The first and second support linkages 56, 58 are positioned on opposite sides of the actuator handle 4.
[0044] The front support 51 is pivotable relative the seat foundation 16 about a first axis passing though a distal end of the linkages 56, 58 and is pivotable relative to the adjustable footplate 3 about a second axis passing through the front support base 54. The rear support 52 is pivotable relative to the seat foundation 16 about a first axis at a first end of the rear support 52 and is pivotable relative to the seat foundation 16 about a second axis at an opposite second end of the rear support 52. The axes of the front support 51 are spaced a greater distance from one another compared to the axes of the rear support 52.
[0045] The front support linkages 56, 58 extend along a first axis inclined toward a rear end of the seat foundation 16 when the adjustable footplate 3 is in the deployed position. The rear support 52 extends along a second axis inclined toward the rear end of the seat foundation 16 when the adjustable footplate 3 is in the deployed position. The first axis is arranged at a first angle to the lower surface of the seat foundation 16 and the second axis is arranged at a second angle to the lower surface of the seat foundation 16. The second angle is greater than the first angle when measured in a rearward direction toward the rear end of the seat foundation 16 when the adjustable footplate 3 is in the deployed position.
[0046] A front end 70 of the adjustable footplate 3 is spaced a first distance from the front end 17 of the seat foundation 16 in the stored position. The front end 70 of the adjustable footplate 3 is spaced a second distance, less than the first distance, from the front end 17 of the seat foundation 16 in the deployed position. A rear end 170 of the adjustable footplate 3 is also spaced a first distance from the front end of the seat foundation 16 in the stored position and a second distance from the front end of the seat foundation 16, greater than the first distance, in the deployed position.
[0047] The cavity 101 formed in the lower surface of the seat foundation 16 has a depth or height that is less than a height of the upper seat body 11. In other words, the adjustable footplate 3 has a height that is less than a height or thickness of the lower seat body 1 so that the adjustable footplate 3 fits within a footprint of the lower seat body and does not protrude upwardly into a travel path of the upper seat body 11.
[0048] In the illustrative embodiment, the plate lock 40 includes a first latch 41 coupled to the actuator handle 4 for movement therewith and a pair of second latches 42 coupled to the actuator handle 4 for movement relative thereto. The first latch 41 is configured to engage with the adjustable footplate 3 in the locked position to block movement of the adjustable footplate from the stored position to the deployed position. The pair of second latches 42 are configured to block movement of the adjustable footplate 3 from the deployed position to the stored position.
[0049] The actuator handle includes a handgrip 44 configured to be grasped by a user and an actuator arm 46 coupled to the handgrip 44 and to the first latch 41. The first latch 41 is coupled to a distal end of the actuator arm 46 opposite the handgrip 44 and is configured to extend into a slot 31 formed in the adjustable footplate 3 to lock the adjustable footplate 3 in the stored position.
[0050] The second latches 42 engage the front support 51 in the deployed position to block movement of the adjustable footplate 3 from the deployed position to the stored position. The actuator arm 46 is formed to include a pair of slots 43 configured to receive a portion of each respective second latch 42. Each latch 42 is configured to slide through each corresponding slot 43 in response to movement of the actuator handle 4 from the locked position to the unlocked position. The slots 43 are angled relative to a pulling direction of the actuator handle 4 toward the front end of the seat foundation 16 to cause each latch 42 to move toward one another in response to actuation of the actuator handle 4 from the locked position to the unlocked position. The second latches 42 and / or the actuator handle 4 are biased toward the locked position.
[0051] In the illustrative embodiment, the adjustable footplate 3 is biased toward the deployed position. One or more biasing members are provided between the seat foundation 16 and the tilt controller 18 and / or between the seat foundation 16 and the adjustable footplate 3 and / or between the tilt controller 18 and the adjustable footplate 3. When the actuator handle 4 is pulled from the locked position to the unlocked position, the adjustable footplate automatically moves from the stored position to the deployed position. In the illustrative embodiment, torsion springs are provided between the seat foundation 16 and the front support 51 to urge movement of the adjustable footplate 3 from the stored position to the deployed position.
[0052] The child restraint 10 further includes a seat attachment unit including a rigid anchor system 80 and a belt lock off 83. The rigid anchor system 80 and the belt lock off 83 may be used independently of one another to secure the child restraint 10 to the vehicle seat.
[0053] The rigid anchor system 80 includes a first anchor beam 8 and a second anchor beam 9. The first anchor beam 8 is moveable relative to the seat foundation 16 between a stored position and an extended position and is engageable selectively with a first anchor included in the vehicle seat when the first anchor beam 8 is in the extended position. The second anchor beam 9 is moveable relative to the seat foundation 16 between a stored position and an extended position and is engageable selectively with a second anchor included in the vehicle seat when the second anchor beam 9 is in the extended position.
[0054] The belt lock off 83 is moveable between a released position and a clamped position. In the released position, a belt path formed in the seat foundation 16 is exposed and can receive an anchor strap, such as a vehicle lap belt. In the clamped position, the belt lock off 83 overlies the belt path to clamp the anchor strap to the seat foundation 16 within the belt path.
[0055] The attachment indicator unit 100 is configured to provide various indications to indicate an attachment status of the child restraint 10 to the vehicle seat. The attachment indicator unit 100 provides a first indication when the first anchor beam 8 and the second anchor beam 9 are in the extended position and when the anchor strap has a tensile force less than a predetermined tensile force or when the first anchor beam 8 and the second anchor beam 9 are in the stored position and the anchor strap has at least the predetermined tensile force. The attachment indicator unit 100 provides a second indication, different than the first indication, when the first anchor beam 8 and the second anchor beam 9 are in the stored position and the anchor strap has the tensile force less than the predetermined tensile force. The first indication may include at least one of: (i) an indication that the first and second anchor beams are in the extended position and (ii) an indication that the first and second anchor beams are in the stored position while the anchor strap has at least the predetermined tensile force. The second indication may include an indication that the anchor beams 8 are in the stored position and / or the anchor strap has a tensile force less than the predetermined tensile force.
[0056] The attachment indicator unit 100 includes a first indicator panel(s) 71, 72 configured to display the first indication through a window 81 formed in the seat foundation 16 when the first anchor beam 8 and the second anchor beam 9 are in the extended position. The attachment indicator unit 100 includes a second indicator panel 82 spaced apart from the first indicator panel 71, 72 and configured to display the first indication through the window 81 when the first anchor beam 8 and the second anchor beam 9 are in the stored position and the anchor strap has at least the predetermined tensile force. In some embodiments, only the second indicator panel 82 is configured to display the second indication through the window 81 when the first anchor beam 8 and the second anchor beam 9 are in the stored position and the anchor strap has the tensile force less than the predetermined tensile force. The first indicator panel 71, 72 is offset from the window 81 when the first anchor beam 8 and the second anchor beam 9 are in the stored position.
[0057] The attachment indicator unit 100 further includes a first panel actuator 104 coupled to the first indicator panel 71, 72 and a second panel actuator 106 coupled to the second indicator panel 82. The first panel actuator 104 is configured to move the first indicator panel 71, 72 relative to the window 81 to display the first indication through the window when the first anchor beam 8 and the second anchor beam 9 are in the extended position and when the anchor strap has a tensile force less than a predetermined tensile force. The second panel actuator 106 is configured to move the second indicator panel 82 relative to the window 81 to display the first indication through the window 81 when the first anchor beam and the second anchor beam are in the stored position and the anchor strap has at least the predetermined tensile force. The second panel actuator 106 is also configured to move the second indicator panel 82 relative to the window 81 to display the second indication through the window 81 when the first anchor beam 8 and the second anchor beam 9 are in the stored position and the anchor strap has the tensile force less than the predetermined tensile force.
[0058] The first panel actuator 104 includes a slide 108 coupled to the first indicator panel 71, a cable 110, and a bias member 112. The cable 110 is configured to move the slide 108 and the first indicator panel 71 relative to the window 81 to display the second indicator panel 82 through the window 81 when the first anchor beam 8 is in the stored position. The bias member 112 configured to move the slide 108 and the first indicator panel 71 relative to the window 81 to display the first indicator panel 71 through the window 81 when the first anchor beam 8 is in the extended position.
[0059] The first anchor beam 8 is configured to translate in a first linear direction from the stored position to the extended position. The slide 108 is configured to translate in a second linear direction, different than the first linear direction, in response to movement of the first anchor beam 8 from the stored position to the extended position. It should be noted that the child restraint can include two separate first indicator panels 71, 72 each movable by their own respective actuators, which may be the same or similar to one another.
[0060] The first panel actuator 104 may include one or more additional components configured to transfer movement of the anchor beam 8 to movement of the indicator panel 71. For example, the first panel actuator 104 may further include a slide mover 114 coupled to the slide 108. The cable 110 may be coupled to the slide mover 114 and may be configured to move the slide mover 114 relative to the seat foundation 16 to display the second indicator panel 82 through the window 81 when the first anchor beam 8 is in the stored position. The bias member 112 may be configured to move the slide mover 114 relative to the window 81 to display the first indicator panel 71 through the window 81 when the first anchor beam 8 is in the extended position.
[0061] The slide mover 114 includes a guide bar 116 coupled to the cable 110 and a lever 118 coupled to the guide bar 116 and to the slide 108. The guide bar 116 is configured to translate in a linear direction in response to movement of the first anchor beam 8 from the stored position to the extended position and the cable 110 pulling the guide bar 116 in the linear direction. The guide bar 116 is configured to move the lever 118 in response to this movement by the cable 110. The lever 118 is configured to rotate about an axis in response to movement of the first anchor beam 8 from the stored position to the extended position to translate movement of the cable 110 to the slide 108 and cause the slide 108 to move relative to the window 81.
[0062] The cable 110 is coupled at one end to a carriage 109 and at the other end to the slide mover 114 (or directly to the slide 108). The carriage 109 is biased toward the rear end 19 of the seat foundation 16 by a compression spring 111. The anchor beam 8 is configured to engage the carriage 109 in the stored position to compress the spring and allow the bias member 112 to move the indicator panel 71 into the window 81. When the anchor beam 8 is extended, the spring causes the carriage 109 to move toward the rear end 19 and the cable 110 pulls slide mover 114 to remove the indicator panel 71 from the window 81 and expose the second indicator panel 82.
[0063] The second panel actuator 106 includes a slide 120 coupled to the second indicator panel 82 for movement therewith, a load pad 122 coupled to the slide 120, and a bias member 124 coupled to at least one of the slide 120 and the load pad 122. The load pad 122 is configured to engage with the anchor strap in the belt path and move relative to the seat foundation 16 from an extended position to a retracted position. In the extended position, the load pad 122 extends at least partially into the belt path when the anchor belt has the tensile force less than the predetermined tensile force. In the retracted position, the load pad 122 is withdrawn from the belt path when the anchor belt has at least the predetermined tensile force to cause the slide 120 and the second indicator panel 82 to move relative to the window 81 and display the first indication through the window 81 when the first anchor beam 8 and the second anchor beam 9 are in the stored position and the anchor strap has at least the predetermined tensile force. The bias member 124 is configured to urge the load pad 122 toward the extended position so that the second indicator panel 82 displays the second indication when the first anchor beam 8 and the second anchor beam 9 are in the stored position and the anchor strap has the tensile force less than the predetermined tensile force.
[0064] It should be noted that the child restraint can include an additional indicator panel and corresponding actuator including a second slide, a second load pad, and a second bias member similarly to actuator 106. The load pad 122 of the second actuator 106 may be positioned on a first side of the belt lock off 83 and the load pad of the additional actuator may be positioned on an opposite second side of the belt lock off 83. This can be done, for example, too measure tensile force of the anchor belt on both sides of the belt lock off 83 to ensure the entire length of the anchor belt has the predetermined tensile force.
[0065] In some embodiments, the child restraint 10 can include a translation system configured to support the juvenile seat 14 on the seat foundation 16 and allow movement of the juvenile seat 14 relative to at least a portion of the seat foundation 16 between a transportation position and an ingress-egress position. In the transportation position, the juvenile seat 14 lies along a front-to-back centerline of the seat foundation 16. In the ingress-egress position a front-to back centerline of the juvenile seat 14 is offset from the front-to-back centerline of the seat foundation 16 to facilitate placement or removal of a child into or out of the child-receiving space, or installation or removal of the juvenile seat 14 to or from the seat foundation 16.
