Abstract
Description
RAZOR AND CASEBACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0001] 1. Technical Field
[0002] This disclosure relates generally to razors and implements for reducing the length of hair, and more particularly, handles for the same. This disclosure also relates to cases and stands for razors and implements for reducing the length of hair.
[0003] 2. Background Information
[0004] Grooming implements are used for a variety of purposes, including reducing the length of hair, applying shaving preparation to the skin and applying skin conditioning applications to the skin, etc. Grooming implements include a surface that engages the skin to achieve any of the aforementioned.
[0005] Razors of the wet shave or manual type include a cartridge and a handle that are connected together. Some razors are disposable systems, where the cartridge is attached to the handle and meant to be discarded after the cartridge is exhausted (e.g., the blades are dull) . Some razors are system razors where the cartridge is attached to the handle and the cartridge can be replaced with a new cartridge once the cartridge is exhausted. Razors include a handle such that a user can grip the razor. While many handles exist, improvements to existing handles to promote grippability are desirous.
[0006] Implements (e.g., razors) are often stored in a case for protection at home or when travelling. Commonly used implements (e.g., razors) with a thin and elongate handle often require a travel case that is much larger in overall footprint than the razor itself. Accordingly, improvements in implement handles and cases is desirous.
[0007] Similarly, during and after use, implement (e.g., razor) stands are utilized to allow the implement (e.g., razor) to properly dry. Nonetheless, particularly in a compact environment or during travel, having multiple different devices to support a grooming (e.g., shaving) routine is cumbersome. As such, streamlining the variety of products into a single product is desirous.SUMMARY

[0076] The first region 116 has a cross-sectional shape in top-view (e.g. as seen in exemplary angled views FIGS. 1, 2 and / or top view FIG. 4) or side view (e.g., as seen in exemplary angled views FIGS. 1, 2, and / or side view FIG. 5) that is arcuate. In some embodiments, the first region 116 has a substantially flat or linear forwardmost surface or edge 130 (e.g., at or proximal to the connector region 118) . In some embodiments, the first region 116 has a generally triangular shape, such as an isosceles, scalene, right, or equilateral triangle. In some embodiments, the first region 116 includes roundels or chamfered corners of such generally triangular shape. In some embodiments, the first region 116 is generally circular or ovular. Optionally, the first region 116 is prismatic (e.g., rhomboid, diamond, trapezoidal) where vertices (or corners) are chamfered or include roundels. Optionally, the first region 116 is a hybrid shape (e.g., squircle) . Optionally, the first region 116 has a shape similar to a teardrop, a unicorn horn, a dollop of, for instance, a cam, a guitar pick, a pin-ball flipper, shave cream, ice cream, whipped cream, mousse, etc.

[0108] Turning now to exemplary FIGS. 6-10, a case 192 for an implement 10 is provided. More particularly as shown in the Figures, a case 192 for a razor 20 is provided. The case 192 has an open configuration (e.g., FIG. 9) and a closed configuration (e.g., FIGS. 6-7, 10) . In the closed configuration, the case 192 has a case length 194, a case height 196, and a case width 198. In the open configuration, the case 192 has an open height 200. The case 192 includes an outside surface 202 and an inside surface 204. The case includes a hinge 206. The case includes a closure mechanism 208. The case 192 includes interior structure 210 suitable for retaining one or more implements 10, such as, for instance, a razor 20, a cartridge 22, etc. The case 192 includes an aperture 212 having a volume. The aperture 212 includes at least one port 214. In some embodiments, a handle 252 is also provided.
[0109] The outside surface 202 includes a first outside surface 202A and a second outside surface 202B. The first outside surface 202A and the second outside surface 202B are optionally unitary and / or connected. The case 192 includes a first portion 216 and a second portion 218. The first portion 216 and the second portion 218 are optionally unitary and / or connected. The first outside surface 202A corresponds to the first portion 216. The second outside surface 202B corresponds to the second portion 218.
[0110] The first portion 216 and the second portion 218 are each optionally multiple components coupled together. In some embodiments, the first portion 216 has a first component 224A and a second component 226A. In some embodiments, the second portion 218 also has a first component (e.g., second exterior component) 224B and a second component (e.g., second interior component) 226B. Such components will be discussed in greater detail below.
[0111] The case 192 includes a first portion 216 and a second portion 218 that are coupled by at least one hinge 206. The hinge 206 permits the case 192 to be opened at least 45 degrees, or between about 60 degrees and 360 degrees (e.g., the case 192 is folded such that the first exterior surface is adjacent the second exterior surface) , or between about 80 degrees and 110 degrees, or between about 90 degrees and about 180 degrees.
[0112] The at least one hinge 206 is optionally a living hinge between the first portion 216 and the second portion 218. In some embodiments, the hinge 206 is inset such that the outside periphery of the case 192 is uninterrupted by the hinge 206 feature when the case 192 is in a closed configuration.
[0113] The case 192 includes a closure mechanism 208 such as a clasp for coupling the first portion 216 and the second portion 218. The hinge 206 and the closure mechanism 208 operate to enable the open configuration and the closed configuration.
[0114] The closure mechanism 208 is positioned to be on an opposite side or end of the hinge 206. The closure mechanism 208, in some embodiments, includes a tab 220 on a first portion 216 of the case 192 and an indent 220 on the second portion of the case. The indent 220 permits a user’s finger to access the tab 220 and open the closure mechanism 208.
[0115] In other embodiments, the closure mechanism 208 includes a magnetic connection between a magnet 228A and a ferrous material 228B. The magnet 228A and the ferrous material 228B are each within or attached to the first portion 216 and the second portion 218, respectively, or vice-versa. The magnet 228A is within or attached to the first component 224 or the second component 226. The ferrous material is within or attached to the second component 226 or the first component 224, or is in the component other than the component the magnet 228A is within or attached to. In such embodiments, the magnet 228A and / or ferrous material 228B are within a cavity 230 and may or may not be visible / accessible.
[0116] The closure mechanism 208, in some embodiments, operates by a detent mechanism, a latch, an interference fit, and / or other known means (e.g., friction fit) . In some embodiments, the closure mechanism 208 is inset such that the outside periphery of the case 192 is uninterrupted by the closure mechanism 208 when the case 192 is in a closed configuration.
[0117] The hinge 206 is positioned on a side 232 of the case 192. In some embodiments, the hinge 206 is positioned outward of but proximal to an aperture 212. In such embodiments, the closure mechanism 208 is positioned distal to the aperture 212. It is understood that the case has a number of sides (e.g., 232, 232A, 232B, 232C, ... 232N, etc. ) .
[0118] The case 192 includes an aperture 212. The aperture 212 has a volume. The aperture 212 has an aperture depth 234. The aperture 212 has a cross-sectional area, a cross-sectional shape, and a cross-sectional perimeter.
[0119] The aperture 212 extends through the first portion 216 and the second portion 218 of the case 192. The aperture 212 thusly has a first aperture section 212A commensurate with the first portion 216, and a second aperture section 212B commensurate with the second portion 218. The first aperture section 212A includes a lip 236 configured to mate with a shoulder 238 on the second aperture section 212B. The lip 236 and the shoulder 238 promote a seal to mitigate against fluid communication between the storage compartment 240 (e.g., the interior space or volume of case 192) and the aperture 212, as will be discussed in greater detail below. The lip 236 and shoulder 238 can be reversed such that the shoulder 238 is on the first portion 216 and the lip 236 is on the second portion 218.
[0120] The aperture depth 234 is less than or equal to the case height 196. The aperture 212 is configured to have an aperture cross-sectional shape suitable for receiving the implement 10 (e.g., the razor handle 26) . The aperture 212 includes at least one port 214. The at least one port 214 is at the bottom of the aperture 212. The at least one port 214 is proximal the outside surface 202 such as the second outside surface 202B. In some embodiments, the at least one port 214 has a port cross-sectional area that is about equal to the cross-sectional area of the aperture 212. By way of example, such aperture 212 cross-sectional area can be taken anywhere along the aperture depth 234. In certain embodiments, the port 214 cross-sectional area is less than or equal to the aperture 212 cross-sectional area when taken at an outside surface 202 when the case 192 is in a closed configuration (e.g., the first exterior surface) opposite to the outside surface 202 where the port 214 is located (e.g., the second exterior surface) . The at least one port 214 is suitably sized for drainage and / or for enabling airflow to promote drying of the implement 10 positioned within the aperture 212.
[0121] In certain embodiments, the aperture 212 has a generally constant cross-sectional area along the aperture depth 234. In certain embodiments, the aperture cross-sectional area reduces slightly from a first outside surface 202A to a second outside surface 202B. This reduction in aperture cross-sectional area along the aperture depth 234 promotes a friction-fit between the implement 10 and the aperture 212. Such friction-fit promotes retention of the implement 10. Such friction-fit, in certain embodiments, elevates the implement 10 such that it does not directly touch an underlying surface upon which the case rests. In other embodiments, aperture 212 includes one or more ribs to promote retention of the implement 10 within the aperture 212 and / or to elevate the implement 10 from the underlying surface (e.g., the counter) . The elevation of the implement 10 from the underlying surface upon which the case 192 rests promotes drainage and drying of the implement 10 (e.g., the razor 20) .
[0122] In some embodiments particularly where the at least one port 214 has a port cross-sectional area generally equal to the aperture 212 cross-sectional area, the aperture is a through hole. The aperture 212, in such embodiment, has an aperture depth 234 that is generally equal to the case height 196.
[0123] The aperture 212 cross-sectional perimeter is generally configured to receive the cross-sectional perimeter of the implement 10 (e.g., razor handle 26) . As such, the aperture 212 cross-sectional perimeter is slightly larger than the implement 10 cross-sectional area such that the implement 10 can be easily positioned within the aperture 212. In some embodiments, the aperture 212 cross-sectional perimeter is a similar shape to a largest cross-sectional perimeter of the implement 10 (e.g., the razor handle 26) .
[0124] The aperture 212 is configured such that when receiving the implement 10, the implement 10 is positioned generally orthogonal to the first outside surface 202A and / or the second outside surface 202B when the case 192 is in the closed configuration.
[0125] The aperture 212 is sized such that the aperture height is at least 20%of the length 114 of the implement 10 (e.g., the razor 20) , or is between about 20%and about 70%of the length 114 of the implement 10, or is between about 20%and about 60%of the length 114 of the implement 10. Such aperture depth 234 is suitable for retaining the implement 10 (e.g., razor 20) in an upright position to promote drying while also mitigating against the implement 10 from tipping.
[0126] In some embodiments, the aperture 212 is configured to receive the implement 10 in a first position (e.g., upright with the implement 10 facing a first direction) and a second position (e.g., upright with the implement 10 facing a second direction) . The aperture 212 is configured to receive the implement 10 in a first position and the aperture has a cross-sectional perimeter (e.g., when looking at a top view such as exemplary FIG. 7) corresponding to the cross-sectional perimeter of the implement 10 (e.g., about central axis 12) such that the implement 10 is received and held in such first position within the aperture 212. Where the cross-sectional perimeter of the implement 10 is not a perfect geometric object, the implement 10 may or may not be received and held in the second position within the aperture 212. In some embodiments, the implement 10 is received within the aperture 212 but wobbles within aperture 212. Such second position configuration is optionally beneficial in terms of ease of removing the implement 10 from the aperture 212.
[0127] The aperture 212 is sized such that the aperture depth 234 is less than the length of the second region 154 of the handle 26. The aperture 212 is sized such that when the razor 20 is positioned within the aperture 212, the neck region 170 is above the top of the aperture 212 (e.g., above the first outside surface 202A) . In such configuration, the handle 26 is grippable about the neck region 170 and can be inserted into the aperture 212 or removed from the aperture 212. Such configuration mitigates against gripping the razor 20 about the cartridge 22.
[0128] In some embodiments, the case 192 includes a handle 252. The handle 252 is on the side 232 of the case adjacent the aperture 212. Handle 252 and aperture 212 operate in concert, where aperture 212 is configured to permit at least a portion of a user’s fingers therein to grip the handle 252. The aperture 212 in such configurations is suitably sized to both receive the implement 10 (e.g., when the aperture 212 is utilized as a stand) and also to permit fingers to grasp the handle 252 (e.g., when the aperture 212 supports the configurations where the handle 252 is utilized) . In some embodiments, handle 252 is on the side 232 of the case 192 adjacent the hinge 206. In such embodiments, the handle 252 is between the hinge 206 and the aperture 212.
[0129] In some embodiments, the outside surface 202 of the case 192 includes at least three protrusions 242. The at least three protrusions 242 extend outwardly from the outside surface 202. The at least three protrusions 242 are optionally on a first outside surface 202A or the second outside surface 202B. The at least three protrusions 242 elevate the case 192 when resting on a surface (e.g., counter) . The at least three protrusions 242 elevate the case 192 from the surface on which it rests such that in the event the case 192 or the surface are wet, the at least three protrusions 242 promote airflow and / or drying.
[0130] The case 192 includes a storage compartment 240 suitable for retaining an implement 10 therein (e.g., a razor 20) and optionally attachments for the implement (e.g., a razor cartridge 22, an attachment for the razor cartridge 22 or razor handle 26, etc. ) . The storage compartment 240 is defined by the inside surface 204. The inside surface 204 includes a first inside surface 204A and a second inside surface 204B. The storage compartment 240 includes at least one depression 244 with a cross-sectional shape suitable for receiving the implement 10 and / or other implement 10 component / attachment. Optionally, the at least one depression 244 includes a finger well 246 to promote insertion / removal of the implement 10 and / or component / attachment thereof.
[0131] In some embodiments, the storage compartment 240 optionally includes one or more ports 214. In embodiments having one or more ports 214, the ports 214 are configured to promote airflow / drying. As shown in FIG. 8, the one or more ports 214 are configured within a portion of the case 192 where a cartridge 22 is located, where a handle 26 is located, or combinations thereof. In embodiments where the case 192 includes more than one component 224, 226, such components include one or more ports 214 aligned and / or configured such that there is fluid communication between the storage compartment 240 of the case (e.g., proximal the razor 20, such as the cartridge 22 or handle 26) and outside of the case 192 (e.g., the outside surface 202) . The one or more ports 214 are optionally positioned on the second portion 218 of the case 192 (e.g., the portion that typically rests on a surface) such that moisture exits the case by way of gravity. The one or more ports 214 are configured and sized to mitigate against surface tension or capillary action retaining moisture within the case 192.
[0132] The storage compartment 240 is separate from the aperture 212. The storage compartment 240 and the aperture 212 are generally not in fluid communication when the case 192 is in the closed configuration. Accordingly, in embodiments having one or more ports 214 in the storage compartment 240, the one or more ports 214 are positioned such that they are not in fluid communication with the aperture 212.
[0133] The implement 10 is configured to be positioned within the storage compartment 240. The implement 10 is configured to be positioned within the storage compartment 240 such that the length of the implement (e.g., razor length 114) is along the case length 194. In such configuration, the implement 10 when positioned within the case 192 is generally orthogonal to the implement’s 10 position when the implement 10 is positioned within the aperture 212.
[0134] In some embodiments, the inside surface 204 of the case 192 includes a topography suitable for conforming to the implement 10 (e.g., razor 20) and any components thereof. In some embodiments, the first inside surface 204A and / or the second inside surface 204B have a topography that confirms to the razor 20 and / or any components thereof. The topography includes at least one depression 244. The topography of the depression 244 is, in some embodiments, configured to conform to a portion of the razor 20 such that a portion of the razor 20 is outward (e.g., above relative to the second inside surface 204B when the case 192 is in an open configuration) of the depression 244.
[0135] The case 192 is unitary. In some embodiments, the case 192 includes one or more components coupled together. In some embodiments, the first portion 216 includes a first exterior component 224 and a first interior component 226. The first exterior component 224 forms substantially all of the first outside surface 202A. The first interior component 226 forms substantially all of the first inside surface 204A. In such fashion, the first exterior component 224 is configured like a shell for the first interior component 226.
[0136] In some embodiments, the second portion 218 includes a second exterior component 224B and a second interior component 226B. The second exterior component 224B forms substantially all of the second outside surface 202B. The second interior component 226B forms substantially all of the second inside surface 204B. In such fashion, the second exterior component 224B is configured like a shell for the second interior component 226B.
[0137] Where the first portion 216 and / or the second portion 218 are one or more components, they are assembled and coupled by way of, e.g., ultrasonics, glue, heat, mechanical fasteners 250 (e.g., clips, latches, detents, tabs and mating orifices, etc. ) , and other known means. Further, the components 224, 226, may be coupled such that they are not intended to be separated. In alternate embodiments, the components 224, 226 are separable, particularly where a first material is in a first post-use consumer stream (e.g., compost, re-use, sterilization, etc. ) and a second material is in a second post-use consumer stream (e.g., recycling, waste, etc. ) . To that end, material selection may be done choicely in order to attach or form multiple components. By way of further example, the first component 224 may be a generally rigid material and it receives a second component 226 including a compressible or deformable material. Upon deformation of the second component 226, it will fit / attach to the first component 224, thereafter recovering and exerting a force against the first component 224 and securing / coupling the first component to the second component 226.
[0138] Focusing now on the interrelationship of various components of the grooming implement 10, the cartridge 22, the connector 24, and the handle 26 are generally aligned along the central axis 12.
