[0001] The present invention relates to a system and apparatus for forming a portable camp fire or fire pit at or close to ground level for camping and recreational use. In particular the present invention relates to an improved portable fire pit assembly which controls the direction of flames and radiant heat and is effective for substantially minimizing smoke. 10
[0002] The invention has been developed primarily for use in / with a system and apparatus for forming a portable camp fire or fire pit at ground level for camping and recreational use and will be described hereinafter with reference to this application. However, it will be appreciated that the invention is not limited to this particular field of 15 use. Background of the Invention
[0003] One of life’s pleasures involves recreational camping and generally spending time outdoors. Sitting about and looking into a camp fire in an evening is a simple yet 20 mesmerising pleasure whether alone or in the company of friends and family. People enjoy cooking over an open fire whether camping or outdoors in a domestic setting, and of course the fire may also provide cosy warmth and an ambient light source.
[0004] Quite often, outdoor fireplaces are used on decks or on porches made of wood 25 or concrete, that can be readily discoloured or damaged when exposed to elevated temperatures. Prior art fire pit structures contribute to this problem by allowing radiant transfer of heat to the underlying surface.
[0005] A fire pit is traditionally a pit dug in the ground to contain fire and prevent it from 30 spreading while being used for cooking and heating. More recently, as a means to avoid the need to dig a hole in the ground, fire pits have been fabricated from bricks, concrete or metal, which are configured to form a substantially enclosed receptacle that can be supported in the ground or on legs. 2025201594 05 Mar 2025
[0006] A particular drawback of outdoor ground level wood fuelled Camp Fire Pits, is that they are notoriously smoky and odorous environments. This can detract from an otherwise cosy and pleasant experience. There is therefore a need for an improved campfire to enhance outdoors experience. 5
[0007] The creation of smoke can be minimised to some extent by stacking wood in a manner to create plenty of air gaps, or by standing wood pieces more upright (for example in a tee-pee bonfire type shape). However, it is difficult to maintain this type of structure as the fire burns down and the new wood is added because the wood io becomes somewhat starved of air by the build-up of ash and coals. Also, even when short logs are added to a burning fire, smoke generally comes from the colder ends of the wood because these parts have often yet to reach the higher burning temperature.
[0008] A further problem with conventional fire pits is that much of heat generated is 15 exhausted upwards and outwards and therefore less effective in providing warmth for multiple people at the same time. One way of addressing this is to provide a large fire requiring greater wood fuel consumption, however large structures become unwieldy and less portable. Further, large fire pits cannot be readily moved once they are alight -this may become a problem if the direction of wind changes. 20
[0009] The present invention seeks to provide an improved fire pit, which will overcome or ameliorate at least one or more of the deficiencies of the prior art, or to at least provide an alternative. It is to be understood that, if any prior art information is referred to herein, such reference does not constitute an admission that the information forms 25 part of the common general knowledge in the art, in Australia or any other country. Summary of Invention
[00010] According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a system and apparatus for forming a portable camp fire for camping and recreational use 30 comprising: a base for supporting a fire spaced above the ground; at least one wall detachably mountable to the base and to form a surround of at least half of the base but less than the whole base wherein the portable camp fire has at least a partial front opening. 2025201594 05 Mar 2025
[0011] The present invention provides an advance over the prior art as it reduces smoke generation by substantially continuously allowing sufficient air ingress into the base of the fire unlike the prior art wood fuelled fire pits. The narrow and relatively high rear panel provides more efficient heating. The lateral step portion in the back panel acts as a small step to lean small sticks against it when lighting a fire and also, so that a small continually flaming fire can be maintained when cooking. A method of providing vertical fire in a portable campfire including the steps of: a. Providing at least one an elongated high back panel;c. Providing ventilation channels in the panels at a low position but above the height of the base to vent the fire supported on the base;d. Allowing placement of elongated combustible material in a5 substantially vertical direction alongside the elongated high backpanel for tending to extend the fire in a vertical direction to form a vertical fire.
16. A method of system and apparatus for portable campfire according to claim 15 10 wherein the high back panel and base form an L-shaped open front retainingstructure forming the portable camp fire.

A method according to claim 16 wherein the high back panel and open front retaining structure includes ventilation slots in a low area above the height of 15 the planar base plate to allow ingress of unobstructed air into the base to encourage and maintain coals on the base plate off the ground.
