Abstract

A combined injection / abstraction valve, for injecting fluid into and abstracting fluid from a subterranean reservoir, comprises a housing adapted to be connected between a riser and a pump, a sleeve slidingly retained completely within the housing, to be selectively movable relative to the housing between a first position, wherein the valve is in an injection mode for injecting fluid into the reservoir, and a second position wherein the valve is in an abstraction mode for abstracting fluid from the reservoir, there being a cavity divisible into first and second fluid-receiving chambers of adjustable volume defined between the sleeve outer surface and the housing inner wall and a fluid seal of solid flexible resilient material located between the chambers, whereby fluid from the first chamber is inhibited from filling the second chamber, wherein, when the first chamber is charged with fluid, the sleeve is driven from injection mode to abstraction mode.
