Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present disclosure relates generally to a device for dissipating heat from one or more heat sources, and in particular a device for dissipating heat from one or more electronics in a cabinet. Background of the Invention
[0002] Electrical control cabinets, also known as electrical enclosures, have an important role in maintaining the safety and reliability of electrical systems. Electrical control cabinets are typically control boxes that are used to house, mount and assemble various electrical components. Depending on the wiring requirements of the particular configuration of electrical components, the electrical control cabinet may be a closed or semi-closed box, or even take the form of a screen.
[0003] The layout of the electrical control cabinet should be designed in order to meet the requirements of the normal operation of that particular power system. It is also important that the layout is easy to access and maintain, be safe for personnel to use and to limit any risk to surrounding equipment.
[0004] Electrical control cabinets may be used to hold a variety of electrical components and devices, such as control systems, measuring instruments, display devices, protective appliances, auxiliary equipment or switchgear such as circuit breakers or fuses. These components can generate heat within the electrical control cabinet, which can lead to early degradation and a reduction in the lifespan of the equipment.
[0005] It is therefore important to ensure that the heat generated from the components is appropriately dealt with. Therefore, electrical control cabinets can be designed to dissipate heat generated by the electrical components within them.
[0006] This dissipation of heat is often carried out through the use of a cooling or a heat dissipation fan. In a typical arrangement, the heat dissipation fan is started and is used to circulate the generated heat and / or gases within the electrical control 2025202658 15 Apr 2025 cabinet. The gas is then discharged through an exhaust hole formed in the wall of the cabinet. The installation position of the heat dissipation fan inside the electrical control cabinet therefore becomes crucial for the efficiency of this heat transfer.
[0007] For the arrangement used in a typical electric control cabinet, the heat dissipation needs to match the position of the exhaust hole of the electrical control cabinet to most efficiently remove the produced heat from the cabinet. This limits the options for where the heat dissipation fan can be placed within the electrical control cabinet. Further to this, this arrangement reduces the ability for the heat dissipation fan to directly dissipate heat from the electrical components. This limitation in the typical arrangement results in an unsatisfactory heat dissipation effect from the electrical components inside the electrical control cabinet.
[0008] Bearing this in mind, the present inventor(s) have developed an improved device for heat dissipation within an electric control cabinet.
[0009] Any reference to or discussion of any document, act or item of knowledge in this specification is included solely for the purpose of providing a context for the present disclosure. It is not suggested or represented that any of these matters or any combination thereof formed at the priority date part of the common general knowledge, or was known to be relevant to an attempt to solve any problem with which this specification is concerned. [0070] Embodiments of the present disclosure will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings. It is to be understood that the 2025202658 15 Apr 2025 embodiments are given by way of illustration only and the disclosure is not limited by this illustration. In the drawings: Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of an enclosure including a device according to an embodiment of the present disclosure; Figure 2 illustrates a perspective view of the device shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 illustrates a perspective view of the device, shown in Figure 1, with part of a channelling assembly removed; Figure 4 illustrates a perspective view of a fan with a guide element of the device, as shown in Figure 1; and Figure 5 illustrates a perspective view of a retaining mechanism of the device, as shown in Figure 1. Detailed Description
[0071] Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of a device 20 for dissipating heat, according to embodiment of the present disclosure. The device 20 is installed in an enclosure 10. Figures 2 to 5 illustrate perspective views of the device 20, or parts of the device 20, according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The device 20 comprises a fan 100, a body 200, a guide assembly 300, a channelling assembly 400 and a retaining mechanism 500.
[0072] The fan 100 includes a housing 110 and one or more blades 120. The fan 100 is used to move heat and gases within the enclosure 10. This can include heat generated by one or more heat sources within the enclosure 10. The one or more heat sources are typically electrical components within the enclosure 10. The heat is formed through normal operation of the electrical components. The fan 100 may be orientated vertically or horizontally. The fan 100 may be placed at an incline relative to a vertical or horizontal plane.
[0073] The housing 110 of the fan 100 includes guiding surface(s) 112. The guiding surface(s) 112 include an engaging surface 113 in the form of a protrusion. The protrusion forms a block that extends from part of a side of the housing 110. The 2025202658 15 Apr 2025 engaging surface 113 provide a discrete surface for engaging at least part of the guide assembly 300. This reduces compliance between these parts and helps avoid binding therebetween.
[0074] The fan 100 further includes a directing portion 114. The directing portion 114 is configured to direct a flow of air leaving the fan 100. The directing portion 114 typically directs the flow of air in a downwards direction. The directing portion 114 may take the form of a plate. The housing 110 may be integrally formed with the directing portion 114. The directing portion 114 may be inclined relative to a horizontal or vertical plane. The directing portion 114 may extend substantially across the housing 110.
[0075] A (front) surface of the fan housing 110 includes one or more assembly holes. In one arrangement, the housing 110 has four assembly holes. A clamping element 130 is connected to the assembly holes. The clamping element 130 is used to assist with fixing the guiding surface(s) 112 thereto via the assembly holes. In this regard, the guiding surface(s) 112 may form part of an installation block. As indicated above, the guiding surface(s) 112 form a protrusion, each with an overhanging edge as shown in Figure 4. These overhanging edges of the protrusions sit within the guide assembly 300 (as discussed further below).
[0076] The body 200 includes the guide assembly 300 and the channelling assembly 400. The body 200 is configured to be attached to the enclosure 10. The body 200 includes attachment portion(s) 210. The attachment portion(s) 210 are in the form of tabs with a hole therethrough. A fastener in the form of a bolt 220 is configured to connect the body 200 to another component.
[0077] The guide assembly 300 includes a guide element 310 and guiding portion(s) 320. The guiding element 310 is in the form of a rod in this embodiment. The guiding element 310 includes a thread 312 and a driving portion 314. At least one side of the fan 100 is connected to the thread 312. That is, the guiding element 310 extends through the housing 110 of the fan 100. More specifically, the guiding element 310 extends through at least part of the protrusion or installation blocks of the housing 110. 2025202658 15 Apr 2025
[0078] The driving portion 314 is located at one end of the guide element 310. The driving portion 314 includes a fastener head in this embodiment, for example a hex head. The driving portion 314 assists in providing a driving mechanism to the fan. That is, by moving the driving portion 314, the thread 312 on the guide element 310 is configured to move the fan 100 from a first position to a second position. That is, the fan 100 can move to different positions along the guide assembly 300. This movement can be a change in a vertical direction, or in other embodiments a horizontal or transverse direction. Movement of the fan 100 is driven by rotation in this embodiment. However, this disclosure is not limited to these movements, and can include other examples of mechanisms that can be used to shift the position of the fan 100 from a first position to a second position, including a user shifting the fan 100 along the guide element 310 and retaining it with a further component. In this regard, it will be appreciated that the guide element 310 may be located within parts of the body 200, or could be separate from the body 200. The guide element 310 could also be a stem, a stick, a ramp or a ring.
[0079] The guiding portion 320 assists in guiding the fan 100. The guiding portion 320 includes two guiding portions 320. The two guiding portions 320 assist with guiding opposing sides of the fan 100. The guiding portions 320 in this embodiment are in the form of a channel 322. However, the guiding portion(s) 320 may take different shapes. The guiding portions 320 assist with guiding the fan 100 from one side of the body 200 to another side of the body 200.
[0080] The guide element 310 can be the same length as the guiding portions 320. The guide element 310 extends through part of the body 200 to allow access to the driving portion 314. In this regard, the guide element 310 extends through part of the body 200 substantially in the form a frame. The frame has four sides 204. The four sides 204 form a substantially rectangular structure. However, this disclosure is not limited to this form and the body 200 could take a variety of shapes. As shown in Figure 3, the guiding portions 320 extend along an internal part of the frame. The sides 204 are formed from member(s) 206.
[0081] The channelling assembly 400 assists in channelling air from the fan 100. For example, the channelling assembly 400 assists with channelling air from the fan 100 to an outlet in the enclosure 10. The channelling assembly 400 includes part(s) 2025202658 15 Apr 2025 410 that assist with covering part(s) of the body 200. The part(s) 410 are in the form of panels 412 in this embodiment. The panels 412 are substantially rectangular. However, in other embodiments, the part(s) 410 may take other shapes.
[0082] The part(s) 410 are configured to move along the body 200. This allows the part(s) 410 to block off portion(s) of the body 200 in order to channel air from the fan 100. In this embodiment, the part(s) 410 are configured to move along the cover guide 420. The cover guide 420 includes slots 422. The slots 422 are located on either side of an opening 202 of the body 200. The opening 202 is formed from the members 206 of the body 200. The slots 422 allow the part(s) 410 to slide therealong. In this regard, the slots 422 are used to hold the sides of the part(s) 410 partly in place. On this basis, depending on the position of the fan 100, the part(s) 410 can be located on one side, or both sides of the fan 100. As detailed below, the retaining mechanism 500 retains the part(s) 410 in place once they are suitably positioned relative to the fan 100.
[0083] The channelling assembly 400 also includes a further cover 416. The further cover 416 is located on an opposite side of the body 200 to the part(s) 410. The further cover 416 covers part of the body 200. The further cover assists with forming the outlet 208 of the body 200. The further cover 416 also provides part of a channel to guide air leaving the fan 100 towards the outlet 208. In this regard, a purpose of the channelling assembly 400 is to assist the flow of air or gas towards an outlet within a wall of the enclosure 10, such as the door 14 shown in Figure 1.
[0084] Figures 1 to 2 and 5 show a retaining mechanism 500. The retaining mechanism 500 includes a locking mechanism 510, a retaining portion 520 and an anchoring portion 530.
[0085] Locking mechanisms 510 are located at either end of the retaining portion 520. The locking mechanisms 510 each include a biasing member 512. The biasing member 512 is in the form of a spring rod in this embodiment. However, other biasing mechanisms may be used. The biasing member 512 is configured to bias the retaining portion 520. That is, the biasing member 512 biases the retaining portion 520 towards the part(s) 410 such that the part(s) 410 are releasably fixed in place. 2025202658 15 Apr 2025
[0086] The retaining portion 520 includes a retaining member 522 and a compression portion 524. The retaining member 522 is in the form of a strip in this embodiment. Other arrangements could be used to hold the panels 412 in place, such as there being more than one retaining member. As shown in Figures 1 and 2, part of the retaining mechanism 500 runs vertically down the length of the one or more part(s) 410, shown in this example as a series of panels 412.
[0087] In the example shown in Figure 2, the length of the retaining portion 520 is greater than the length of the channelling assembly 400. This disclosure is not limited to this example however, and it is envisaged that the retaining portion 520 could be shorter than the length of the channelling assembly 400 and still fulfil its function of retaining the one or more part(s) 410.
[0088] The retaining member 522 is connected to the compression portion 524. The compression portion 524 is in the form of a rubber strip. The compression portion 524 may be placed over the panels 412 without being permanently fixed to a (front) surface of the panels 412.
[0089] An anchoring portion 530 is also connected to each biasing member 512. The anchoring portion 530 may be any form of plate, welded connection, staple or screw, or any other example of an anchor that would be expected to keep in place the end of a locking mechanism 510 or retaining portion 520 that could be under tension. In an embodiment, the anchoring portion 530 is connected to part of the body 200, but the invention is not limited to this and the anchoring portion 530 may be anchored by any other means to keep it fixed in place.
[0090] The retaining portion 520 may be directly connected to the anchoring portion 530. However, the retaining portion 520 may alternatively be connected to a first end of a biasing member 512, where a second end of the biasing member 512 is connected to the anchoring portion 530.
[0091] As outlined above, the device 20 may be disposed within the enclosure 10. The device 20 may be attached to the door 12. The device 20 may also be integrally formed within a surface of the enclosure, such as integrally formed with a wall or door of the enclosure 10. To use the device 20, the device 20 is positioned such that the outlet 208 of the body 200 is aligned with an opening in the door 12. The device 20 is 2025202658 15 Apr 2025 then fixed to the inner surface 14 of the door 12. When installed, there should be substantially no gap between the channelling assembly 400 and the cabinet door 14.
[0092] Following the above, depending on the configuration of the device 20, a user may then loosen the position of the one or more part(s) 410 by releasing the locking mechanism 510. That is, the biasing member may be released to stop the retaining portion 520 biasing against the one or more parts (s).
[0093] The user may then position the fan 100 within the channelling assembly 400 through the use of the guide assembly 300 to drive the movement. For example, the user will rotate the thread 312 using the driving portion 314 to adjust the position of the fan 100. When the thread 312 rotates, it drives the position of the fan 100 and moves it along the guiding channels 322. The fan 100 may move towards one end of the body 200 or the other. The fan may be positioned such that, when the door 12 is closed, it sits adjacent electronic components creating the most heat in the enclosure 10. It would be appreciated that the retaining mechanism 500 does not need to be necessarily released before the fan 100 is moved.
[0094] Once the fan 100 is in position, the user will move the one or more part(s) 410 into place such that they substantially block part of the body 200 adjacent the fan 100. This forces air to pass through the fan 100 and not to pass around it. It also prevents air from passing through the fan 100 and re-circulating back into the enclosure 10. It would be appreciated that the one or more part(s) 410 are slid along the slots 422 to move them along the body 200. Once the one or more part(s) 410 are in position, the user will then fix the channelling assembly 400 back in place by placing tension on the retaining member 522 and fixing the retaining member 522 in place using the locking mechanism 510. The compression portion 524 assists in reducing compliance between the retaining member 522 and parts 410.
[0095] When the fan 100 is started, air is pulled from inside the enclosure 10. The air passes through the fan 100 and is directed by the directing portion 114. In the embodiment shown in Figure 2, the air passes briefly through the channelling assembly 400 and proceeds out of the outlet 208. In embodiments where the fan 100 is located further away from the outlet 208, air is forced out of the fan 100 and then travels along the body 200 between the panels 412 and the further cover 416. In this 2025202658 15 Apr 2025 way, the channelling assembly 400 channels the air towards the outlet 208 which is fluid communication with the outlet of the enclosure 10.
[0096] The above described device 20 is suitable for use in a variety of enclosures, particularly those that would require heat dissipation or the shifting of the flow of gas throughout an enclosed space. Embodiments of the disclosure may be used in any electrical cabinets that require cooling or air circulation, including but not limited to inverter cabinets and rectifier cabinets. As described above, embodiments of the disclosure may also be used in electrical cabinets necessitating heat dissipation, such as variable frequency drive cabinets and rectification cabinets.
[0097] Advantages of the device 20 include improvements to the movement of gases within an enclosure, and in particular heat dissipation within an electric control cabinet, whereby the device 20 can: • adjust the position of the fan 100 within the enclosure 10 so as to guide the gases or heat generated within the enclosure 10; • avoid issues from the fan 100 being required to be permanently positioned alongside ventilation outlets of the enclosure 10; and • having a channelling assembly 400 that can be reconfigured based on new positions of the fan 100 in order to channel air from the fan 100 to the outlet of the enclosure 10.
