Abstract
Description
5 FIELD OF INVENTION The present invention relates to a phase separation apparatus. The present invention has particular but not exclusive application for multi-phase separation of solid material from liquids in an oil and gas operation. The patent specification describes this use but it is by way of example only and the invention is not limited to 10 this use. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The material extracted from coal seam gas wells, such as produced during well cleaning operations, is typically in the form of a fluid mixture of gases and liquids 15 with some entrained solid material. The gases typically include methane and air, the liquids typically include water, and the solid material can include fine silt, coarse sand, or coal fragments. Disadvantageously, the mixed fluids can cause particles within the mixture to break down during discharge. It is beneficial to separate the gases from the liquid 20 and solid components of the fluid mixture in order to maximise the extraction of useable products and to minimise emissions. Phase separation is a process commonly used in the oil and gas industry for this purpose. Phase separation processes include gravity separation (using separators), chemical treatments, and the use of advanced technologies like centrifuges and electrostatic coalescers. 25 A common apparatus used for phase separation is a flowback tank. A flowback tank is a vessel used in the flowback operations including well workover and fracking operations. The tank is typically rectangular in shape with a flat floor. A typically horizontal inlet pipe connects to either the top or the middle of the flowback tank. 30 A flowback tank separates multi-phase flow which includes fluid, solids and gas. When separated the gas is typically vented to atmosphere, and the solid material collect in bottom of the flowback tank along with the fluid. The fluid can then be pumped out to other storage tanks or trucked away. The solid material remains on the floor and are difficult to remove from the tank. 2025202672 16 Apr 2025 OBJECT OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the present invention to overcome or at least alleviate one or more of the above-mentioned problems with phase separation apparatuses and / or provide the consumer with a useful or commercial choice. 5 SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In one aspect, the present invention broadly resides in a phase separation apparatus, including a support structure; and 10 a vessel defining an internal chamber, the vessel including a rotatable portion mounted on the support structure, the rotatable portion having a first end and a second end; and a fixed wall mounted on the support structure and configured to sealingly engage with the first end, the fixed wall having an aperture to receive a fluid supply 15 line, wherein the internal chamber is configured to receive fluid from the fluid supply line. The rotatable portion is rotatable at a rotational speed of between 1 rpm and 2 rpm. The rotating supports 22 are configured to rotate the rotatable portion 32 in either a first rotational direction 5 (clockwise) or a second rotational direction (anticlockwise). The control system of the phase separation apparatus is configured to actuate the rotating supports 22. The rotatable portion 32 has a flight 38 on an interior surface thereof. The flight 38 has a helical configuration. The flight 38 is configured to move solid material when the rotatable portion 32 is rotated. 10 The vessel 30 is configured to move and accumulate solid material towards the first end 12 when the rotatable portion 32 is rotated in a clockwise direction. The vessel 30 is configured to move solid material towards the second end 14 when the rotatable portion 32 is rotated in an anticlockwise direction. The discharge manifold 90 is connected to the second end 14. The discharge 15 manifold 90 is fluidly connected to the internal chamber. The discharge manifold 90 is mounted on the support structure 20 and allows the rotatable portion 32 to rotate while being fluidly connected to the internal chamber. The flare stack 80 is fluidly connected to the discharge manifold 90 through opening 82. The discharge manifold 90 includes a chute, a demister pad with large 20 diameter exit point, a discharge sock 94 connected to the large diameter exit point, and a chute door 92 configured to obstruct the chute. When the chute door 92 is in a closed position the chute door 92 is obstructed and gas is forced through the demister pad prior to exiting the demister manifold. The flare stack 80 is fluidly connected to the internal chamber via the discharge manifold 90. The fan 86 is configured to create a negative pressure in the internal 30 chamber. Creating a negative pressure in the internal chamber is a measure to mitigate gas leaks and could be used to ensure minimum exit velocity at the stack to limit burn back. In open well work over operations it is advantageous for the flare system to have a large blower fan as downdraft is desired at the opening of a well during maintenance operations. 2025202672 16 Apr 2025 The phase separation apparatus 10 includes a pressure relief valve positioned at the large diameter discharge point. The pressure relief valve directs gas to flow through the large diameter discharge point when the gas flow is in excess of the capability of the flare stack 80. When the pressure relief valve is closed and / or 5 the pilot 88 is extinguished gas flow is diverted to the flare stack 80 is closed. The rotatable portion 32 is mounted to the support structure on load cells. The load cells help the operator determine the rate of return of solid material. In use, the load cells are zeroed with the internal chamber being full of fluid. Subsequently, any solid material entering the tank will displace fluid. The control system is 10 configured to calculate the quantity of solid material present in the internal chamber, and display information such as a trend line and the total amount of solid material. The generator 110 provides power to the phase separation apparatus. In use a gas / liquid mixture is fed through the fluid supply line 40 into the internal chamber through the fluid diffusor 50. The gas / liquid mixture could have 15 entrained solid material. The fluid diffusor 50 decreases the momentum of the feed, perform a first stage separation of solid material and liquid from the vapor / gas, and achieve an even vapor / gas distribution across the vessel 30 cross section. The support structure 20 can be tilted such that liquid within the internal chamber moves towards the first end 12. Fluid that enters into the front 20 compartment can be removed by the suction system 70. Solid material entrained in the gas / liquid mixture sink and accumulate towards the bottom of the internal chamber. The rotatable portion 32 is rotated by the rotating supports 22 such that the flight 38 move the solid material towards the towards the second end 14 where the solid material can be removed through the 25 chute door 92. Gases are drawn through the discharge manifold 90 by the negative pressure produced by the fan 86 and expelled from the flare stack 80. If the gas flow is in excess of the capacity of the flare stack 80 the pressure relief valve is opened to allow gas to flow through the large diameter discharge point. If the pressure valve is 30 open it is safe practice to either close flow to the flare stack and / or to extinguish the pilot 88. ADVANTAGES 2025202672 16 Apr 2025 An advantage of the preferred embodiment of the phase separation apparatus includes that liquids and gases can be efficiently separated. Another advantage of the preferred embodiment of the phase separation apparatus is that the rotating portion addresses the accumulation and removal of 5 solid material. In particular, the flight arrangement assists in moving the solid material. A further advantage of the preferred embodiment of the phase separation apparatus is that the rotating portion with the flight arrangement allow the phase separation apparatus to be self-cleaning. 10 VARIATIONS While the foregoing has been given by way of illustrative example of this invention, all such and other modifications and variations thereto as would be apparent to persons skilled in the art are deemed to fall within the broad scope and 15 ambit of this invention as is herein set forth.
