Description

[0001] Use of isoxazolinecarboxamide for selective weed control in pineapple

[0002] The invention relates to the field of crop protection, more specifically to the use of methyl (2R*,4R*)-4- [[(5S)-3-(3,5-difluorophenyl)-5-vinyl-4H-isoxazole-5-carbonyl]amino]tetrahydrofuran-2 -carboxylate (I) and / or a salt thereof for control of undesired vegetation in an area comprising pineapple plants by an application over the top of the pineapple plants.

[0003] Compounds from the structural class of substituted isoxazolinecarboxamides are known from WO2018 / 228985 and WO2019 / 145245 as herbicides for weed control against a broad range of weeds in bum-down applications. It is also known to combine such herbicidal active ingredients with other herbicides for weed control, see e. g. WO 2020 / 114932.

[0004] Pineapple (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.) is a semi-perennial monocotyledonous herbaceous fruit tree that is found in almost all tropical and subtropical areas of the world. Pineapple is the most important economic plant in the family Bromeliaceae and the third-most economically important tropical fruit in the world. There are more than 100 cultivars of pineapple worldwide, which are divided into five categories / varietal groups according to their characters: the Cayenne group, Queen group, Spanish group, Abacaxi group, and Maipure group. Commercial pineapple propagation is based on vegetative propagation and planting of crowns, slips and suckers and it takes about 12 - 20 month from planting to 1stfruit harvest. After initial harvest the 1 - 1.5 m tall crop will provide additional 2 - 3 yearly harvests. Aside from the fmit production, the leaves of pineapples are occasionally used to produce fiber. Varieties or subspecies with improved fiber quality are also marketed (e.g. : Ananas lucidus, A. erectifolius).

[0005] In contrast to fruit trees, herbicide application in pineapple is conducted over the top of the pineapple canopy to control weed growing around and in between the crop plants. In order to keep the semi perennial crop productive, successful and selective weed control is of utmost importance in order to develop the full yield potential at the first and subsequent harvest times. Weeds are a major constraint to pineapple production and can incur a significant cost if not managed successfully. Pineapple plants are growing slowly and do not cover the soil well enough to suppress weeds development in the first six to eight months of their growth.Weed growth during pineapple production competes for water, nutrients and light and can be a host for pineapple pests and viruses, thereby reducing the yield.

[0006] For the purpose of weed control in pineapple, the herbicide used must exhibit a selective action against the weeds without significantly damaging the pineapple crops. This particularly applies to post-emergence applications. However, many herbicides used in weed control management do not show the required level of selectivity. Some herbicides need to be applied in combination with a safener to achieve a sufficient level of selectivity. For example, it is known from WO 2021 / 245004 that substituted isoxazolinecarboxamides can be used as pre-emergent herbicides for cereal crops if they are applied in combination with a safener. Other agrochemicals do not control the weed plants sufficiently or do not control some weed species at all. Accordingly, there is a need for novel and alternative methods to efficiently protect pineapple crops against weeds without diminishing crop quality and without significant damage to the crop.

[0007] It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide improved control of undesired vegetation in cultivated areas comprising pineapple plants.

[0008] This object has been achieved by the use of methyl (2R*,4R*)-4-[[(5S)-3-(3,5-difhiorophenyl)-5-vinyl-4H- isoxazole-5-carbonyl]amino]tetrahydrofuran-2 -carboxylate (I), which exists in the form of two stereoisomers: methyl (2R,4R)-4-[[(5S)-3-(3,5-difhiorophenyl)-5-vinyl-4H-isoxazole-5-carbonyl]-amino]- tetra-hydrofuran-2-carboxylate of formula (la) and methyl (2S,4S)-4-[[(5S)-3-(3,5-difluorophenyl)-5-vinyl- 4H-isoxazole-5-carbonyl]amino]tetrahydrofuran-2-carboxylate of formula (lb), and / or a salt thereof for control of undesired vegetation in an area comprising pineapple plants by an application over the top of the pineapple plants:

[0009] Surprisingly, it has been found that the isoxazolinecarboxamide of formula (I) exhibits high herbicidal activity against a broad spectrum of monocotyledon and dicotyledon weeds and has hardly any phytotoxic effect on pineapple plants in over-the-top (post-emergence) applications. This particularly applies when application rates of 300 g per hectare or less of compound (I) are used and mixtures of the compound of formula (I) with surfactants are applied. Furthermore, it has been found that effective weed control using compound (I) actually even increases the number of flowering plants compared to the untreated control group.

[0010] Another object of the invention is the use of a composition comprising methyl(2R*,4R*)-4-[[(5S)-3-(3,5- difluorophenyl)-5-vinyl-4H-isoxazole-5-carbonyl]amino]tetrahydrofuran-2-carboxylate (I) and / or a salt thereof for control of undesired vegetation in an area comprising pineapple plants by an application over the top of the pineapple plants. According to the invention, the compound of the formula (I) shows an excellent and desirable effect in terms of weed control in pineapple plants without, or without substantial damage, to the crop and its quality in post-emergence treatments, i.e. when applied over the top of the pineapple plants.

[0011] As used herein, the term “pineapple plant” is understood to include the plant itself and any parts thereof that can be used as planting material, including pineapple crowns, slips, side shoots and ratoon suckers.

[0012] “Application over the top of the pineapple plants” means that the compound of formula (I) and / or salt thereof is applied after planting to the area comprising the pineapple plants and also to the pineapple plants; i.e. the pineapple plants are included in the treatment and are not spared.

[0013] Preferably, the compound of formula (I) and / or salt thereof is applied to the whole area comprising the pineapple plants, i.e. to the pineapple plants and to the vegetation and soil around and in between the pineapple plants, e.g. by a spraying method.

[0014] The treatment can take place directly after planting or any time later. It can be performed prior to the emergence of undesired vegetation or the soil may already have undesired vegetation.

[0015] Preferably, at least one treatment is given directly on the day of planting or up to 21 days thereafter.

[0016] The treatment can be applied once or repeatedly.

[0017] For example, a first treatment can be given on the day of planting or up to 21 days thereafter and a second treatment 80 to 130 days after planting.

[0018] The term "undesired vegetation" (also referred to as "weeds") is understood to include any vegetation growing at a crop plant site or locus of seeded and otherwise desired crop, where the vegetation is any plant species other than pineapple. Weeds, in the broadest sense, are plants considered undesirable in a particular location.

[0019] Specific examples of some representatives of the monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous weed flora which can be controlled by the use of the compound of the formula (I) according to the invention are as follows, though the enumeration is not intended to impose a restriction to particular species.

[0020] Monocotyledonous harmful plants of the genera: Aegilops, Agropyron, Agrostis, Alopecurus, Apera, Avena, Brachiaria, Bromus, Cenchrus, Commelina, Cynodon, Cyperus, Dactyloctenium, Digitaria, Echinochloa, Eleocharis, Eleusine, Eragrostis, Eriochloa, Festuca, Fimbristylis, Heteranthera, Imperata, Ischaemum, Leptochloa, Lolium, Monochoria, Panicum, Paspalum, Phalaris, Phleum, Poa, Rottboellia, Sagittaria, Scirpus, Setaria, Sorghum.

[0022] In some embodiments, the compound of formula (I) and / or salt thereof is used to control weeds of the genera eleusine, digitaria, portulaca, amaranthus, richardia and commelina.

[0023] According to the invention, the compound of the formula (I) can be used as such or in form of a agrochemically acceptable salt. Agrochemically acceptable salts include acid addition salts of suitable inorganic or organic acids, for example mineral acids such as hydrogen chloride, hydrogen bromide, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid and nitric acid, or organic acids, for example carboxylic acids such as formic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, oxalic acid, lactic acid or salicylic acid or sulfonic acids, for example p- toluenesulfonic acid.

[0024] According to the invention, the compound of formula (I) is used in form of a mixture of the stereoisomers (la) and (lb). This mixture can be prepared according to the procedure described in WO2018 / 228985. Preferably, stereoisomers (la) and (lb) are present in a weight ratio (Ia) / (Ib) within the range of from 30:70 to 70:30, more preferably within the range of from 45:55 to 55:45.

[0025] According to the invention, in order to control undesired vegetation, a herbicidally effective amount of the compound of the formula (I) and / or salt thereof is applied over the top of the pineapple plants and to the area comprising the pineapple plants. As used herein, the term "herbicidally effective amount" denotes an amount, which is sufficient for controlling the undesired vegetation and which does not result in a substantial damage to the pineapple plants.

[0026] The application rates for the herbicidal compound of formula (I) and / or salts thereof can vary within a broad range and is generally depend on the type of treatment, such as, for example spraying or spreading, weather conditions, timing of the year, time of application, weed species composition, weed growth stages and on whether the compound of formula (I) is combined with other herbicides. Suitable applications rates for the compound of formula (I) for selective control of harmful vegetation by an application over the top of pineapple plants are within the range of from 10 to 500 g a.i. / ha, preferably within the range of from 10 to 350 g a.i. / ha and most preferably within the range of from 25 to 200 g a.i. / ha.

[0027] The compound of formula (I) can be applied using a composition comprising the compound of formula (I) and / or a salt thereof. The composition is preferably applied to the whole area comprising the pineapple plants by spraying or drenching liquid (sprayable) formulations or dissolvable or dispersing formulations. Spray and drench application with water volumes from 50 to 10000 liter per hectare can be applied with all common application equipment like large motor driven professional spray equipment, knapsack sprayer, hose end applicators, RTU pump sprayers, arerosol cans, ULV applicators or watering cans.

[0028] The application can be done as broadcast application covering the entire cultivated and planted or seeded area, as well as only sections, bands, strips or spots within the cultivated area. The application can be targeted to specific areas, based upon camera recognition of already emerged weeds, based on georeferenced weed maps generated from monitoring emerged weeds or weed infestations recorded from previous seasons based on weed recognition, yield decrease or previous crop growth.

[0029] The applied dose rate can be kept constant or adjusted according to weed infestation in terms of density and species composition, topography and soil type.

[0030] Furthermore, the composition can be applied by spreading or granular (active ingredient on inert or active ingredient on fertilizer) formulations. It is also possible to water in the product after applications with additional irrigations for all application methods.

[0031] In one embodiment, the composition comprising the compound of formula (I) and / or salt thereof is applied to the area comprising the pineapple plants as a sprayable liquid formulation. In another embodiment, the composition is applied to the area comprising the pineapple plants as a granular formulation. Suitable granules include inert and fertilizer granules. The active ingredient may be dispersed throughout, impregnated into, or coated on the surface of the granules.

[0032] The herbicidal action of the compound of formula (I) used according to the invention can be enhanced by using one or more surfactants, preferably selected from the groups of vegetable oil-based surfactants and / or by using ammonium salts, such as ammonium sulfate and ammonium thiocyanate.

[0033] The term vegetable oil -based surfactant is to be understood as meaning oils of oleaginous plant species, such as soybean oil, rapeseed oil, com oil, sunflower oil, cottonseed oil, linseed oil, coconut oil, palm oil, thistle oil or castor oil, in particular rapeseed oil or soybean oil, and also their transesterification products, for example alkyl esters, such as rapeseed oil methyl ester, rapeseed oil ethyl ester such as Stefes Mero® or methylated soybean oil, such as Destiny® HC.

[0034] The vegetable oil-based surfactants are preferably esters of C10-C22-, preferably C12-C20-, fatty acids. The Cw-C22-fatty acid esters are, for example, esters of unsaturated or saturated Cio-C22-fatty acids having, in particular, an even number of carbon atoms, for example erucic acid, lauric acid, palmitic acid and in particular Cis-fatty acids such as stearic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid or linolenic acid.

[0035] Examples of Cio-C22-fatty acid esters are esters which are obtained by reacting glycerol or glycol with the Cio-C22-fatty acids present, for example, in oils of oleaginous plant species, or Cio-C22-fatty acid Ci-C2o-alkyl esters which can be obtained, for example, by transesterification of the glycerol or glycol Cio-C22-fatty acid esters mentioned above with Ci-C20-alcohols (for example methanol, ethanol, propanol or butanol). The transesterification can be carried out by known methods as described, for example, in Rompp Chemie Lexikon, 9th edition, Volume 2, page 1343, Thieme Verlag Stuttgart.

[0036] Preferred Cio-C22-fatty acid Ci-C2o-alkyl esters are methyl esters, ethyl esters, propyl esters, butyl esters, 2- ethylhexyl esters and dodecyl esters. Preferred glycol and glycerol Cio-C22-fatty acid esters are the uniform or mixed glycol esters and glycerol esters of Cio-C22-fatty acids, in particular fatty acids having an even number of carbon atoms, for example erucic acid, lauric acid, palmitic acid and in particular Cis-fatty acids such as stearic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid or linolenic acid.

[0037] In the herbicidal mixtures / compositions according to the invention, the vegetable oil based surfactants can be present, for example, in the form of commercially available vegetable oil based surfactants, in particular those based on soybean oil, such as Destiny® HC (Winfield United, main ingredient: methylated soybean oil), orthose based on rapeseed oil, such as Hasten® (Victorian Chemical Company, Australia, hereinbelow referred to as Hasten, main ingredient: rapeseed oil ethyl ester), Actirob®B (Novance, France, hereinbelow referred to as ActirobB, main ingredient: rapeseed oil methyl ester), Rako-Binol® (Bayer AG, Germany, hereinbelow referred to as Rako-Binol, main ingredient: rapeseed oil), Renol® (Stefes, Germany, hereinbelow referred to as Renol, vegetable oil ingredient: rapeseed oil methyl ester) or Stefes Mero® (Stefes, Germany, hereinbelow referred to as Mero, main ingredient: rapeseed oil methyl ester).

[0038] Methylated seed oils, such as methylated soybean oil or rapeseed oil methyl ester, are particularly preferred. Methylated seed oils are produced by esterification of vegetable-based oils with methanol. The methylation process increases the hydrophilic / lipophilic balance (HLB) of the seed oil. The HLB describes the ability of a surfactant to associate with hydrophilic and lipophilic compounds. Suitable methylated seed oils preferably have a HLB value of at least 12.

[0039] Suitable applications rates for surfactants are within the range of from 0.1 to 10 L / ha, preferably within the range of from 0.2 to 5 L / ha and most preferably within the range of from 0.5 to 3.0 L / ha.

[0040] Another object of the invention is therefore the use of a composition comprising (i) the compound of formula (I) and / or a salt thereof and (ii) a surfactant, preferably selected from the groups of vegetable oil-based surfactants as described above, for control of undesired vegetation in an area comprising pineapple plants by an application over the top of the pineapple plants. Preference is given to compositions comprising the compound of formula (I) and / or salt thereof and a surfactant based on methylated seed oil.

[0041] Suitable application rates for ammonium salts, in particular ammonium sulfate, are within the range of from 0.1 to 10 kg / ha, preferably within the range of from 0.2 to 5 kg / ha and most preferably within the range of from 0.5 to 3.0 kg / ha.

[0042] In some preferred embodiments according to the invention, a composition comprising (i) the compound of formula (I) and / or a salt thereof,

[0043] (ii) at least one surfactant, preferably selected from the groups of vegetable oil-based surfactants , and

[0044] (iii) ammonium sulfate, is used for the control of undesired vegetation in an area comprising pineapple plants by means of an application over the top of the pineapple plants. Preference is given to compositions comprising (i) the compound of formula (I) and / or salt thereof, (ii) a surfactant based on methylated seed oil and (iii) ammonium sulfate.

[0045] The compound of formula (I) and the compositions used according to the invention can be formulated in various ways, according to the biological and / or physicochemical parameters required. Examples of general formulation options are: wettable powders (WP), water-soluble concentrates, emulsifiable concentrates (EC), aqueous solutions (SL), emulsions (EW), such as oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions, sprayable solutions or emulsions, suspension concentrates (SC), dispersions, oil dispersions (OD), suspoemulsions (SE), dusts (DP), seed-dressing products, granules for soil application or spreading (GR) or water-dispersible granules (WG), ultra-low volume formulations, microcapsule dispersions or wax dispersions.

[0046] The individual types of formulation are known in principle and are described, for example, in: "Manual on Development and Use of FAO and WHO Specifications for Pesticides", FAO and WHO, Rome, Italy, 2002; Winnacker-Ktichler, "Chemische Technologic" [Chemical Engineering], Volume 7, C. Hanser Verlag Munich, 4th Ed. 1986; van Valkenburg, "Pesticide Formulations", Marcel Dekker N.Y. 1973; K. Martens, "Spray Drying Handbook", 3rd Ed. 1979, G. Goodwin Ltd. London.

[0047] The formulation auxiliaries required, such as inert materials, surfactants, solvents and further additives, are likewise known and are described, for example, in: Watkins, "Handbook of Insecticide Dust Diluents and Carriers", 2nd Ed., Darland Books, Caldwell N.J.; H.v. Olphen, "Introduction to Clay Colloid Chemistry"; 2nd Ed., J. Wiley & Sons, N.Y.; Marsden, "Solvents Guide", 2nd Ed., Interscience, N.Y. 1950; McCutcheon's "Detergents and Emulsifiers Annual", MC Publ. Corp., Ridgewood N.J.; Sisley and Wood, "Encyclopedia of Surface Active Agents", Chem. Publ. Co. Inc., N.Y. 1964; Schbnfeldt, "Grenzflachenaktive Athylenoxidaddukte [Interface-active ethylene oxide adducts]", Wiss. Verlagsgesellschaft, Stuttgart 1976, Winnacker Ktichler, "Chemische Technologic [Chemical Engineering]", Volume 7, C. Hanser Verlag Munich, 4th Ed. 1986.

[0048] Wettable powders (sprayable powders) are products which are uniformly dispersible in water and which, besides the active compounds and in addition to one or more diluents or inert substances, also comprise ionic and / or nonionic surfactants (wetting agents, dispersants), for example polyoxyethylated alkylphenols, polyethoxylated fatty alcohols or fatty amines, propylene oxide / ethylene oxide copolymers, alkanesulfonates or alkylbenzenesulfonates or alkylnaphthalenesulfonates, sodium lignosulfonate, sodium 2,2’- dinaphthylmethane-6,6’ -disulfonate, sodium dibutylnaphthalenesulfonate or sodium oleoylmethyltaurate. Emulsifiable concentrates are prepared by dissolving the active compounds in an organic solvent or solvent mixture, for example butanol, cyclohexanone, dimethylformamide, acetophenone, xylene or other higher- boiling aromatics or hydrocarbons with addition of one or more ionic and / or nonionic surfactants (emulsifiers). Examples of emulsifiers which may be used are: calcium alkylarylsulfonates such as calcium dodecylbenzenesulfonate, or nonionic emulsifiers such as fatty acid polyglycol esters, alkylaryl polyglycol ethers, fatty alcohol polyglycol ethers, propylene oxide-ethylene oxide copolymers, alkyl polyethers, sorbitan fatty acid esters, polyoxyethylene sorbitan fatty acid esters or polyoxyethylene sorbitol esters.

[0049] Dusting products are obtained by grinding the active compound with finely distributed solids, for example talc, natural clays, such as kaolin, bentonite and pyrophyllite, or diatomaceous earth.

[0050] Suspension concentrates are water-based suspensions of active compounds. They may be prepared, for example, by wet grinding by means of commercially available bead mills and optional addition of further surfactants as have, for example, already been listed above for the other formulation types. In addition to the suspended active compound or active compounds, other active compounds may also be present in the formulation in dissolved form.

[0051] Oil dispersions are oil-based suspensions of active compounds, where oil is to be understood as meaning any organic liquid, for example vegetable oils, aromatic or aliphatic solvents, or fatty acid alkyl esters. They can be prepared, for example, by wet grinding by means of commercially available bead mills and, if appropriate, addition of further surfactants (wetting agents, dispersants) as have already been mentioned, for example, above in the case of the other formulation types. In addition to the suspended active compound or active compounds, other active compounds may also be present in the formulation in dissolved form.

[0052] Emulsions, for example oil-in-water emulsions (EW), can be prepared, for example, by means of stirrers, colloid mills and / or static mixers from mixtures of water and water-immiscible organic solvents and, if appropriate, further surfactants as have already been mentioned, for example, above in the case of the other formulation types. Here, the active compounds are present in dissolved form.

[0053] Granules can be prepared either by spraying the active compound onto adsorptive, granulated inert material or by applying active compound concentrates to the surface of carriers such as sand, kaolinites, chalk or granulated inert material with the aid of adhesives, for example polyvinyl alcohol, sodium polyacrylate or else mineral oils. Suitable active compounds can also be granulated in the manner customary for the production of fertilizer granules - if desired as a mixture with fertilizers. Water-dispersible granules are produced generally by the customary processes such as spray-drying, fluidized-bed granulation, pan granulation, mixing with high-speed mixers and extrusion without solid inert material. For the production of pan, fluidized-bed, extruder and spray granules, see e.g. processes in "Spray-Drying Handbook" 3rd Ed. 1979, G. Goodwin Ltd., London; J.E. Browning, "Agglomeration", Chemical and Engineering 1967, pages 147 ff; "Perry's Chemical Engineer's Handbook", 5th Ed., McGraw Hill, New York 1973, p. 8-57. For further details regarding the formulation of crop protection compositions, see, for example, G.C. Klingman, "Weed Control as a Science", John Wiley and Sons, Inc., New York, 1961, pages 81-96 and J.D. Freyer, S.A. Evans, "Weed Control Handbook", 5th Ed., Blackwell Scientific Publications, Oxford, 1968, pages 101-103.

[0054] Agrochemical formulations generally comprise from 0.1 to 99% by weight, in particular from 2 to 95% by weight, of active compounds of the herbicide components, the following concentrations being customary, depending on the type of formulation: In wettable powders, the active compound concentration is, for example, about 10 to 95% by weight, the remainder to 100% by weight consisting of customary formulation constituents. In the case of emulsifiable concentrates, the active compound concentration can be, for example, from 5 to 80% by weight. In most cases, formulations in the form of dusts comprise from 5 to 20% by weight of active compound, sprayable solutions comprise about 0.2 to 25% by weight of active compound. In the case of granules such as dispersible granules, the active compound content depends partially on whether the active compound is present in liquid or solid form and on which granulation auxiliaries and fillers are used. In water-dispersible granules, the content is generally between 10 and 90% by weight.

[0055] In addition, the active compound formulations mentioned optionally comprise the respective customary adhesives, wetting agents, dispersants, emulsifiers, preservatives, antifreeze agents and solvents, fillers, colourants and carriers, antifoams, evaporation inhibitors and pH- or viscosity-modifying agents.

[0056] For application, the formulation containing the compound of formula (I) is, if appropriate, diluted in a customary manner, for example in the case of wettable powders, emulsifiable concentrates, dispersions and water-dispersible granules with water. Dust-type preparations, granules for soil application or granules for scattering and sprayable formulations are not normally diluted further with other inert substances prior to application.

[0057] General formulation examples a) A dust is obtained by mixing 10 parts by weight of an active compound / active compound mixture and 90 parts by weight of talc as inert substance and comminuting the mixture in a hammer mill. b) A wettable powder which is readily dispersible in water is obtained by mixing 25 parts by weight of an active compound / active compound mixture, 64 parts by weight of kaolin-containing clay as inert substance, 10 parts by weight of potassium lignosulfonate and 1 part by weight of sodium oleoylmethyltaurate as wetting agent and dispersant, and grinding the mixture in a pinned-disc mill. c) A suspension concentrate which is readily dispersible in water is obtained by mixing 20 parts by weight of an active compound / active compound mixture with 5 parts by weight of tristyrylphenol polyglycol ether (Soprophor BSU), 1 part by weight of sodium lignosulfonate (Vanisperse CB) and 74 parts by weight of water, and grinding the mixture in a friction ball mill to a fineness of below 5 microns. d) An oil dispersion which is readily dispersible in water is obtained by mixing 20 parts by weight of an active compound / active compound mixture with 6 parts by weight of alkylphenol polyglycol ether (Triton® X 207), 3 parts by weight of isotridecanol polyglycol ether (8 EO) and 71 parts by weight of paraffinic mineral oil (boiling range for example approx. 255 to 277°C), and grinding the mixture in a friction ball mill to a fineness of below 5 microns. e) An emulsifiable concentrate is obtained from 15 parts by weight of an active compound / active compound mixture, 75 parts by weight of cyclohexanone as solvent and 10 parts by weight of oxyethylated nonylphenol as emulsifier. f) Water-dispersible granules are obtained by mixing

[0069] It is also possible to use the compound of formula (I) in combination with other active ingredients or nutrients, such as, for example, insecticides, acaricides, nematicides, herbicides, fungicides, fertilizers and / or growth regulators, or with combinations or compositions comprising thereof.

[0070] According to the invention, the expression “combination” stands for the various combinations of compound (I) and the other active ingredient or nutrient, for example in a single “ready-mix” form, in a combined spray mixture composed from separate formulations of the single active compounds, such as a “tank-mix”, and in a combined use of the single active ingredients when applied in a sequential manner, i.e. one after the other within a reasonably short period, such as a few hours or days. Preferably, the order of applying the active compounds is not essential for working the present invention.

[0071] In some preferred embodiments of the invention, the compound of formula (I) is used in combination with at least one further herbicide, preferably in form of a composition comprising the compound of formula (I) and the at least one further herbicide.

[0072] Another object of the invention is therefore the use of a composition comprising (i) methyl(2R*,4R*)-4- [[(5S)-3-(3,5-difluorophenyl)-5-vinyl-4H-isoxazole-5-carbonyl]amino]tetrahydrofuran-2 -carboxylate (I) and / or a salt thereof and (ii) at least one further herbicide for control of undesired vegetation in an area comprising pineapple plants by an application over the top of the pineapple plants.

[0073] As used in this application and unless otherwise indicated the term “herbicide” refers to a compound that is produced, sold, or used in a field in order to kill or otherwise inhibit the growth of undesired plants such as, but not limited to, deleterious or annoying weeds, broadleaf plants, grasses, and sedges; and can be used for crop protection, edifice protection or turf protection. The term “herbicide” includes the end-use herbicidal product. This composition can be a pure compound, a solution of chemical compounds, a mixture of chemical compounds, an emulsion, a suspension, a solid-liquid mixture, or a liquid-liquid mixture. The term “herbicide” also refers to the product that passes through the commercial channels from the manufacturer to the ultimate end user who can either apply the herbicide to the affected field as sold or mix it with other excipients.

[0074] Examples of herbicides which could be used in combination with the compound of formula (I) are: acetochlor, acifluorfen, acifluorfen-methyl, acifluorfen-sodium, aclonifen, alachlor, allidochlor, alloxydim, alloxydim-sodium, ametryn, amicarbazone, amidochlor, amidosulfuron, 4-amino-3-chloro-6- (4-chloro-2-fluoro-3-methylphenyl)-5-fluoropyridine-2 -carboxylic acid, aminocyclopyrachlor, aminocyclopyrachlor-potassium, aminocyclopyrachlor-methyl, aminopyralid, aminopyralid- dimethylammonium, aminopyralid-tripromine, amitrole, ammoniumsulfamate, anilofos, asulam, asulam- potassium, asulam-sodium, atrazine, azafenidin, azimsulfuron, beflubutamid, (S)-(-)-beflubutamid, beflubutamid-M, benazolin, benazolin-ethyl, benazolin-dimethylammonium, benazolin-potassium, benfluralin, benfuresate, bensulfuron, bensulfuron-methyl, bensulide, bentazone, bentazone-sodium, benzobicyclon, benzofenap, bicyclopyron, bifenox, bilanafos, bilanafos-sodium, bipyrazone, bispyribac, bispyribac-sodium, bixlozon, bromacil, bromacil-lithium, bromacil-sodium, bromobutide, bromofenoxim, bromoxynil, bromoxynil-butyrate, -potassium, -heptanoate and -octanoate, busoxinone, butachlor, butafenacil, butamifos, butenachlor, butralin, butroxydim, butylate, cafenstrole, cambendichlor, carbetamide, carfentrazone, carfentrazone-ethyl, chloramben, chloramben-ammonium, chloramben-diolamin, chloramben-methyl, chloramben-methylammonium, chloramben-sodium, chlorbromuron, chlorfenac, chlorfenac -ammonium, chlorfenac-sodium, chlorfenprop, chlorfenprop- methyl, chlorflurenol, chlorflurenol-methyl, chloridazon, chlorimuron, chlorimuron-ethyl, chlorophthalim, chlorotoluron, chlorsulfuron, chlorthal, chlorthal-dimethyl, chlorthal-monomethyl, cinidon, cinidon-ethyl, cinmethylin, exo-(+)-cinmethylin, i.e. (lR,2S,4S)-4-isopropyl-l-methyl-2-[(2- methylbenzyl)oxy]-7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptan, exo-(-)-Cinmethylin, i.e. (lR,2S,4S)-4-isopropyl-l- methyl-2-[(2-methylbenzyl)oxy]-7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptan, cinosulfuron, clacyfos, clethodim, clodinafop, clodinafop-ethyl, clodinafop-propargyl, clomazone, clomeprop, clopyralid, clopyralid- methyl, clopyralid-olamin, clopyralid-potassium, clopyralid-tripomin, cloransulam, cloransulam-methyl, cumyluron, cyanamide, cyanazine, cycloate, cyclopyranil, cyclopyrimorate, cyclosulfamuron, cycloxydim, cyhalofop, cyhalofop-butyl, cyprazine, 2,4-D (as well as ammonium, butotyl, butyl, cholin, dimethylammonium, diethylammonium, diolamine, doboxyl, dodecylammonium, etexyl, ethyl, 2- ethylhexyl, heptylammonium, isobutyl, isooctyl, isopropyl, isopropylammonium, lithium, meptyl, methyl, potassium, tetradecylammonium, triethylammonium, triisopropanolammonium, tripromine and trolamine salts thereof), 2,4-DB, 2,4-DB-butyl, 2,4-DB-dimethylammonium, 2,4-DB-isooctyl, 2,4-DB-potassium and 2,4-DB-sodium, daimuron (dymron), dalapon, dalapon-calcium, dalapon-magnesium, dalapon- sodium, dazomet, dazomet-sodium, n-decanol, 7-deoxy-D-sedoheptulose, desmedipham, detosyl- pyrazolate (DTP), dicamba and its salts (e.g. dicamba-biproamine, dicamba-N,N-bis(3- aminopropyl)methylamine, dicamba-butotyl, dicamba-cholin, dicamba-diglycolamine, dicamba- dimethylammonium, dicamba-diethanolamine, dicamba-diethylammonium, dicamba-isopropyl- ammonium, dicamba-methyl, dicamba-monoethanolamine, dicamba-olamin, dicamba-potassium, dicamba-sodium, dicamba-triethanolamine), dichlobenil, 2-(2,4-dichlorobenzyl)-4,4-dimethyl-l,2- oxazolidin-3 -one, 2-(2,5 -dichlorobenzyl)-4,4-dimethyl- 1 ,2-oxazolidin-3 -one, dichlorprop, dichlorprop- butotyl, dichlorprop-dimethylammonium, dichlorprop-etexyl, dichlorprop-ethylammonium, dichlorprop- isoctyl, dichlorprop-methyl, dichlorprop-potassium, dichlorprop-sodium, dichlorprop-P, dichlorprop-P- dimethylammonium, dichlorprop-P-etexyl, dichlorprop-P-potassium, dichlorprop-sodium, diclofop, diclofop-methyl, diclofop-P-methyl, diclosulam, difenzoquat, difenzoquat-metilsulfate, diflufenican, diflufenzopyr, diflufenzopyr-sodium, dimefuron, dimepiperate, dimesulfazet, dimethachlor, dimethametryn, dimethenamid, dimethenamid-P, dimetrasulfuron, dinitramine, dinoterb, dinoterb- acetate, diphenamid, diquat, diquat dibromide, diquat dichloride, dithiopyr, diuron, DNOC, DNOC- ammonium, DNOC-potassium, DNOC-sodium, endothal, endothal-diammonium, endothal-dipotassium, endothal -disodium, epyrifenacil (S-3100), EPTC, esprocarb, ethalfluralin, ethametsulfuron, ethametsulfuron-methyl, ethiozin, ethofumesate, ethoxyfen, ethoxyfen-ethyl, ethoxysulfuron, etobenzanid, F-5231, i.e. N-[2-chloro-4-fluoro-5-[4-(3-fluoropropyl)-4,5-dihydro-5-oxo-lH-tetrazol-l- yl]phenyl]ethansulfonamide, F-7967, i.e. 3-[7-chloro-5-fluoro-2-(trifluoromethyl)-lH-benzimidazol-4- yl] - [0159] Examples

[0160] A field trial was conducted in Brazil to assess the weed control efficacy and crop selectivity after treatment with the compound of formula (I) on two pineapple varieties, Perola and Havai, respectively. Within the same trial the pineapple crop selectivity and the weed control efficacy were assessed in parallel. In order to gain a more comprehensive understanding of crop selectivity after treatment with the compound of formula (I), as a single herbicide or in mixtures with commercial standards, at single and repeated applications, different application timings after planting of the pineapple plantlets (method a / b) were tested within the trail.

[0161] The compound of formula (I) was used in form of a mixture of the stereoisomers (la) and (lb), prepared according to the method described in WO2018 / 228985.

[0162] Crop damage was assessed as % damage compared to untreated plants, where 0 % damage indicates healthy and uninfluenced plants, and 100 % damage indicates complete control of treated plants. Complete control can be indicated by complete eradication of plants and bare ground, or completely dead plants compared to untreated.

[0163] Herbicidal weed control efficacy was assessed visually as % reduction of plant biomass, where 0 % control indicates healthy and uninfluenced plants, equal to untreated control plants, and 100 % control indicates complete control of treated plants compared to untreated control. Complete control can be indicated by complete eradication of plants and bare ground, or completely dead plants compared to untreated.

[0164] The following formulations of active ingredients were used:

[0165] Compound of formula (I): suspension concentrate (200 g / L)

[0166] Diuron: commercially available suspension concentrate (500 g / L)

[0167] Method a: The herbicide treatments as described in table 1, were applied at 26 days after planting when the planted pineapple recovered from planting and were actively growing. The crop damage compared to untreated plants was assessed for 77 days after application and the maximum damage throughout the rating period was determined (cf. table 1, method a, 0-77 DAA, 26 - 103 DAP). The herbicidal efficacy on six different weeds was assessed 21 days after application, i.e. 47 days after planting (cf. table 3).

[0168] Method b: The in method a described plants received a second herbicide application, again with the treatments as described in table 1 at 112 days after planting with the same treatment as previously. Those plants were sprayed twice with the described treatments at a spray interval of 65 days. The crop damage compared to untreated plants was assessed until 306 days after planting, when the flower induction took place. Maximum damage throughout the rating period was determined (cf. table 1, method b, 112 - 306 DAP). Method c: The herbicide treatments as described in table 1, were applied at 47 days after planting when the planted pineapple recovered from planting and were actively growing. The crop damage compared to untreated plants was assessed for 77 days after application and the maximum damage throughout the rating period was determined (cf. table 1, method a, 47 - 306 DAP). Flowering was induced at 211 days after planting and plants bearing flowers were counted 306 days after planting . Relative number of plants bearing flowers in % of total plants per treatment is displayed in the table below, (cf. table 2, method b and c, 306 DAP).

[0169] The results are summarized in tables 1, 2 and 3 below.

[0187] Tables 1 shows that the treatment with the compound of formula (I) has hardly any phytotoxic effect on the pineapple plants at different timings after planting or when the plants received repetitive applications of the herbicide. The plants treated 26 days after planting as shown under method a, the plants treated 47 days after planting as shown under method c or the plants treated a second time with the mentioned dose rates 86 days after the previous application show hardly any phytotoxic symptoms and the observed symptoms are acceptable to the farmer. The same is true for mixtures of the compound of formula (I) and diuron.

[0188] The good crop selectivity of the the compound of formula (I) is also displayed by the high level of induced flowers compared to the untreated control or the current commercial standard diuron (table 2). The number of plants bearing flowers was increased on average across all treatments both compared to the untreated control group and compared to treatments with diuron. Table 3 shows that the compound of formula (I) exhibits excellent herbicidal activity against a broad spectrum of weeds at application rates of 50-200 g of active ingredient per hectare.
