AI Technical Summary
Existing polyethylene films used for packaging hygiene articles often contain non-recyclable materials and do not provide sufficient tear resistance and sealing performance, limiting their functionality and environmental sustainability.
Development of a mono-material, polyethylene film composed of ethylene homo- or copolymers with minimal inorganic constituents, featuring a three-layer structure and a specific layer composition that enhances tear propagation force and sealing behavior, achieved through blown-film coextrusion and optional release coating.
The film exhibits high tear resistance, improved sealing performance, and enhanced processability, with a broad processing window and reduced defects, while being fully recyclable.

[0128] Comparative Example V1:

[0134] Properties:
[0135] Numerous properties of the polyethylene films B1, B2a, B2b, B3a and B3b according to the invention and of the two comparative films V1 and V2 were determined. The results are summarized in the following table: V1 V2 B1 B2a B2b B3a B3b Thickness M 17 17 17 17 15 40 35 DIN527-3 machine direction (MD): - E modulus [N / mm2] 381.4 294 352.1 304.3 310.1 - Force at 1% elongation [N] 1.7 1.4 1.6 1.4 1.3 - Force at 2.5% elongation [N] 3.6 3.2 3.6 3.1 2.9 - Force at 5% elongation [N] 5.1 5.1 5.4 4.7 4.7 7.9 7.5 - Force at 10% elongation [N] 6.2 6.9 6.9 6.3 6.5 9.9 9.5 - Force at 25% elongation [N] 7.7 10.1 10.1 9.3 9.6 12.7 12.4 - Elongation at break [%] 234.9 147.3 114.4 109.8 97.1 374 404.7 - Breaking force [N] 10.3 13 13.3 11.6 11.3 25.3 19.1 - Tensile strength [N / mm2] 10.3 37.5 40 36.8 39 40.1 36.4 - Total thickness [gm] 21 23 22 17 19 38.3 34.7 DIN527-3 cross direction (CD): - E modulus [N / mm2] 522 368.4 454.1 390.4 398.3 - Force at 1% elongation [N] 2.1 1.6 2 1.9 1.5 - Force at 2.5% elongation [N] 4 3.1 3.8 3.5 3.0 - Force at 5% elongation [N] 5 3.9 4.8 4.4 3.8 9.2 7.5 - Force at 10% elongation [N] 4.6 4 4.2 3.7 3.4 9.7 8.6 - Force at 25% elongation [N] 3.6 3.1 3.3 3.1 2.7 6.7 6.9 - Elongation at break [%] 766.9 693 775 615.6 671.4 682 592.9 - Breaking force [N] 7.3 6 6.5 6.0 6.2 18 10.9 - Tensile strength [N / mm2] 25.3 18.1 20 17.5 21.8 30.0 20.8 - Total thickness [gm] 19 22 22 17 19 DIN53356 tear propagation force, trouser: - Machine direction (MD) [N] 0.3 0.1 7.3 0.1 0.1 1.1 0.8 - Cross direction (CD) [N] 5.2 4.2 4.4 4.3 3.3 DIN53363 tear propagation force, trapezoid: - Machine direction (MD) [N] 4.2 4.2 6.9 3 3 - Cross direction (CD) [N] 11.1 12.3 11.3 11.6 11.7 Shrinkage, oil bath, 1 min: - Machine direction (MD) at 120°C [%] -13 -13 -16 -12 -20 - Cross direction (CD) at 120°C [%] +2.5 +2.5 +2.5 +3.5 +4 - Machine direction (MD) at 130°C [%] -37.5 -22.5 -40 -22 -20 - Cross direction (CD) at 130°C [%] -3 +1 -3 +1 +2.5 - Machine direction (MD) at 140°C [%] -67.5 -25 -65 — -35 - Cross direction (CD) at 140°C [%] -10 +2.5 -5 — 0 Sealing behavior: Process window [°C]: <10 ~5 ~15 ~15 ~15 Punching behavior: Assessment of cut edges me-dium / good medium very good very good very good
[0136] As the experimental data in the above table demonstrate, the polyethylene films according to the invention exhibit a very good tensile strength in the machine direction (MD) combined with a high modulus of elasticity, which is evident in particular from the values of the force at 1%, 2% and 5%.
[0137] Furthermore, the polyethylene films according to the invention exhibit improved sealing behavior, which is evident from the broader temperature range of the processing window. This is particularly surprising insofar as it is not the composition of the two outer sealing layers (A) and (C) that is responsible for this, since it was not changed, but the composition of the middle layer (B), which as such does not form an outer side of the polyethylene film at all.
[0138] In addition, the polyethylene films according to the invention exhibit improved processability, the assessment of which cumulatively takes into account the extrusion output in kg / h and the quality with respect to specks, holes or embossing defects. The two comparative films are characterized by medium processability, a maximum line output not being achieved (<85% of the maximum speed in m / min), since specks, holes and embossing defects occur again and again. In contrast, the polyethylene film according to the invention is characterized by very good processability, the maximum line output being achieved (>98% up to 100% of the maximum speed in m / min), since specks, holes or embossing defects occur only very rarely, if at all.
[0139] Furthermore, the experimental data show that the polyolefin films according to the invention exhibit improved cutting or punching behavior. The cut or punched edges formed during cutting or punching are significantly improved.
