Abstract

Abstract An intravaginal ring device is disclosed for contraception and / or prevention or treatment of infections. The device comprises a non-segmented or segmented ring formed from an uncoated thermoplastic elastomer, excluding copolymeric silicone, and a curved or flat non-resorbable barrier attached to and encircled by the ring. The barrier may comprise a polymeric mesh, metal structure, metal-polymer composite, or perforated film, and is configured to permit passage of uterine secretions. One or more active ingredients may be incorporated in the ring, the barrier, or discrete reservoirs within the ring. The ring may be flat, circular, oval, or saddle-shaped and may include a removal tab. The thermoplastic elastomer construction reduces fluid absorption and shape distortion compared with intravaginal rings formed from copolymeric silicone matrices, thereby improving fit, comfort and performance during use.
