Abstract

28 Abstract A natural-origin antimicrobial composition is provided, comprising 1–6% by weight hydrogen peroxide, 10–100 ppm silver nanoparticles, 1–10% by weight lactic acid, 1– 6% by weight citric acid, 1–4% by weight sodium citrate, 0.1–5% by weight one or more essential oils, chitosan and water as a carrier. The chitosan forms a film- forming polymer matrix in which the silver nanoparticles are dispersed or retained. Following application of the composition to a target surface and evaporation of at least part of the water, the matrix forms an adherent residual film retaining the silver nanoparticles on the target surface. The composition may have a pH of 3.0–4.5 and may provide oxidative, metallic, organic acid and plant-derived antimicrobial activity.
