Description

The instant disclosure relates to a device, particularly to a device for hydrogen production by electrolysis. 5            Since the Industrial Revolution, rapid global technological development has led to a rapid increase in the demand for energy. Currently, energy is still mainly obtained from fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas. However, fossil fuels are not renewable energy sources, and thus their storage will be gradually exhausted due to massive consumption; meanwhile, they also cause serious environmental impacts such as the global greenhouse effect. Therefore, 10 in order to achieve goals such as environmental protection, sustainable resource development and net-zero carbon emission, the world gives more and more attention to the development of green and renewable energy; wherein hydrogen energy is considered as one of the key elements of future green energy due to its potentials such as an environmentally friendly and clean source, high energy density and diverse applications. 15            However, hydrogen energy is classified into different names depending on its source and manufacturing technology, and not all types of hydrogen energy are renewable and environmentally friendly. The common types of hydrogen energy are as follows: “gray hydrogen” produced by using natural gas combined with steam reforming technology, “blue hydrogen” re-produced from gray hydrogen by carbon capture and storage, “turquoise 20 hydrogen” produced by thermally decomposing methane and “green hydrogen” produced by electrolyzing renewable energy and water, etc. Among them, the “green hydrogen” uses renewable energy to provide low-cost electricity for the electrolysis reaction, and its raw materials do not involve fossil fuels. Therefore, the “green hydrogen” is not only very environmentally friendly, but also has the lowest carbon emission among all types of hydrogen 25 energy. 2026220186   18 Aug 2026 As the production of “green hydrogen” does not involve any carbon emission issue, the key point thereof is efficiency and operating life of the electrolysis energy. Currently known methods for producing “green hydrogen” include: (1) alkaline electrolysis (AE) technology: this technology uses an alkaline solution (commonly potassium hydroxide) as the electrolyte 5 and applies direct current to it. The electrolyte is electrolyzed at the cathode to produce hydrogen ions (H+, also known as protons) and hydroxide ions (OH-); wherein the hydrogen ions accept electrons to generate hydrogen gas, and the hydroxide ions migrate through a porous conductive membrane to the anode, where they undergo oxidation reaction to release electrons and produce oxygen gas; (2) proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis technology: 10 this technology uses pure water as the electrolyte, and after direct current is applied, the water generates oxygen and hydrogen ions by reaction of the anode catalyst layer. Subsequently, the hydrogen ions migrate through the proton exchange membrane to the cathode and combine with electrons provided by the external circuit to produce hydrogen gas; (3) anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysis technology: this technology combines alkaline electrolysis with 15 proton exchange membrane electrolysis, uses non-noble metal catalysts and can use weakly alkaline substances or water as the electrolyte; and (4) solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) technology: this technology uses a ceramic material (i.e., a solid oxide) with the property of conducting oxygen ions (O2-) as an electrolyte, and steam-form water is introduced into the electrolytic cell at a high temperature of 650C to 800C, and then electrolyzed at the cathode 20 to form hydrogen ions and oxygen ions; wherein hydrogen ions receive electrons provided by the external circuit to generate hydrogen gas, and oxygen ions migrate through the ceramic electrolyte to the anode to generate oxygen gas and release electrons. Among foresaid electrolysis technologies, proton exchange membrane water electrolysis technology and anion exchange membrane electrolysis technology have similar 25 structure for their electrolytic stacks (i.e., electrolytic cell), which mainly comprise the 2026220186   18 Aug 2026 following elements: end plates, bipolar plates, flow channel plate and membrane electrode assembly (MEA), etc.; wherein the membrane electrode assembly usually comprises a pair of gas diffusion layers (GDL), an anode catalyst layer (CL), a cathode catalyst layer and a membrane. 5            However, the electrolytic stacks are limited in hydrogen production due to high energy consumption and low energy conversion efficiency. This is mainly because hydrogen bubbles generated during electrolysis tend to accumulate on the cathode surface, which reduces the contact area between the cathode and water, and requires the gas to desorb and separate spontaneously. Meanwhile, the structural design of the electrolytic stack needs to reserve a 10 certain amount of space for gas escape, and this not only increases the difficulty of electrolytic stack design, but also fails to effectively mitigate problems such as low electrolysis efficiency. For the issue of reducing gas accumulation to enhance hydrogen production efficiency, the following prior arts have made further improvements to devices for hydrogen production by electrolysis: (1) CN119571347A, which discloses that the electrodes and catalyst layer 15 contain magnetic materials, and permanent magnets are disposed on two outer sides of the electrolysis device to form a directional magnetic field, thereby accelerating the gas desorption rate; (2) CN115449846A, which discloses that placing wound coils outside the electrolytic cell and using alternating pulsed current to generate an alternating magnetic field helps reduce the bubble coverage on the electrode surface; (3) CN115354354A, which discloses that configuring 20 a direct current (DC) induction coil outside the electrolytic cell to form a directional magnetic field helps improve the energy conversion efficiency of hydrogen production; (4) CN118531418A, which discloses that each bipolar plate has an embedded single permanent magnet to create a directional magnetic field inside the electrolysis device, thereby improving hydrogen production efficiency; and (5) TW202441028A, which discloses that the electrodes 25 and electrode catalyst layers of the electrolytic cell can use magnetic materials such as nickel- 2026220186   18 Aug 2026 containing metals, and is beneficial for the replacement and maintenance of electrodes and other components. Nevertheless, the effects of improving hydrogen production efficiency of the prior arts mentioned above are still insufficient. Accordingly, further research and development of related 5 technologies of devices for hydrogen production by electrolysis are needed to further improve their hydrogen production efficiency, thereby contributing to the development of green energy and conforming to global future development trends. In view of the needs in the prior arts, an objective of the instant disclosure is to provide a device for hydrogen production by electrolysis, which demonstrates better hydrogen 10 production efficiency (i.e., higher current density, lower operating voltage or higher hydrogen production per unit time) compared to the devices for hydrogen production by electrolysis in the prior arts, thereby contributing to the development of green energy, save energy, and aligning with future global trends such as net-zero carbon emission and resource sustainability. To achieve the foresaid objective, the instant disclosure provides a device for hydrogen 15 production by electrolysis, which comprises the following components stacked and assembled in order: a front-end plate; an anode plate; a first flow channel plate, which comprises a first through hole and a second through hole arranged opposite to each other, a first flow channel and a plurality of first permanent magnets; wherein, the first flow channel is connected to the first through hole and the second through hole, and the plurality of first permanent magnets are 20 embedded in the first flow channel plate and located at sites comprising an area corresponding to the first flow channel on a side of the first through hole, an area corresponding to the first flow channel on a side of the second through hole, and an area corresponding to a middle flow channel of the first flow channel plate; a membrane electrode assembly, which comprises a pair of gas diffusion layers, an anode catalyst layer, a cathode catalyst layer and a membrane; 25 wherein, the anode catalyst layer and the cathode catalyst layer are sandwiched between the 2026220186   18 Aug 2026 pair of gas diffusion layers, the membrane is sandwiched between the anode catalyst layer and the cathode catalyst layer and the membrane is proton exchange membrane or anion exchange membrane; a second flow channel plate, which comprises a third through hole and a fourth through hole arranged opposite to each other, a second flow channel and a plurality of second 5 permanent magnets; wherein, the second flow channel is connected to the third through hole and the fourth through hole, and the plurality of second permanent magnets are embedded in the second flow channel plate and located at sites comprising an area corresponding to the second flow channel on a side of the third through hole, an area corresponding to the second flow channel on a side of the fourth through hole, and an area corresponding to a middle flow 10 channel of the second flow channel plate; a cathode plate; and a back-end plate; wherein, a material of the anode plate, a material of the first flow channel plate, a material of the second flow channel plate and a material of the cathode plate each independently comprise a ferromagnetic material, and a material of the anode catalyst layer and a material of the cathode catalyst layer each independently comprise a magnetic transition metal material. 15           By disposing the first permanent magnets and the second permanent magnets on the specific sites inside the first flow channel plate and the second flow channel plate and selecting the specific kind of materials to manufacture the anode plate, the first flow channel plate, the second flow channel plate, the cathode plate, the anode catalyst layer and the cathode catalyst layer, the device for hydrogen production by electrolysis of the instant disclosure demonstrates 20 better hydrogen production efficiency compared to the devices for hydrogen production by electrolysis in the prior arts. Specifically, compared to the known device for hydrogen production by electrolysis, the device for hydrogen production by electrolysis of the instant disclosure has higher current density under fixed and identical operating voltage conditions, has lower operating voltage under fixed and identical current density conditions or has higher 25 hydrogen production per unit time under the same conditions. For the technical means of 2026220186   18 Aug 2026 disposing permanent magnets on the multiple specific sites inside the flow channel plates, it can provide multiple localized directional magnetic fields and make the magnetic field lines intersect and overlap, thereby promoting the desorption and dissipation of gas in the flow channel, thus effectively reducing the gas covering effect on the electrode surface. 5            In accordance with the instant disclosure, said “middle flow channel of the flow channel plate” indicates the flow channel encompassed by the area along the transverse central axis of the flow channel plate. In some embodiments, the direction of transverse central axis of the flow channel plate is perpendicular to the direction of the flow channel. In some embodiments, the anode plate and the cathode plate are electrically connected 10 to a power supply, and the power supply provides pulsed DC. By further adopting the technical means of the power supply that provides pulsed DC, it can induce ion concentration fluctuations in the region near the electrode surface, and thus drives the electrochemical reaction to proceed rapidly during the “on period” and provides time for reactant (e.g., hydrogen ions) replenishment and concentration gradient reconstruction during the “off period”, thereby 15 reducing the effective thickness of the Nernst diffusion layer (i.e., the region lacking reactants) and improving the overall transport properties. In some embodiments, an output signal of the pulsed DC may be rectangular waveform, a frequency of the pulsed DC may be from 150 Hz to 200 Hz and a duty cycle of the pulsed DC may be from 50% to 60%. 20           In some embodiments, the first flow channel and the second flow channel are each independently an S-shaped flow channel. In some embodiments, a surface magnetic field strength of the plurality of first permanent magnets and a surface magnetic field strength of the plurality of second permanent magnets are each independently more than or equal to 0.2 Tesla (T). 15            In some embodiments, the device for hydrogen production by electrolysis further comprises a pair of Helmholtz coils, and the pair of Helmholtz coils are respectively disposed on the outer sides of the anode plate and the cathode plate. By further disposing the pair of Helmholtz coils, it can be an additional active magnetic field generator, which produces a highly uniform and stable magnetic field at the center of the coil, thereby helping to promote gas 20 desorption and further improve hydrogen production efficiency. In some embodiments, the pair of Helmholtz coils are electrically connected to a power supply, and the power supply can provide pulsed DC or pulsed alternating current (AC). In some embodiments, the N pole of the pair of Helmholtz coils is on the outer side of the anode plate, and the S pole thereof is on the outer side of the cathode plate. 2026220186   18 Aug 2026 In some embodiments, the magnetic field generated by the pair of Helmholtz coils may be in the same direction as the current direction of the power supply; or it may be perpendicular to the current direction of the power supply, and thus make the gas and fluid accept an upward force. 5            In some embodiments, the ferromagnetic material comprises iron (Fe), silicon steel, ferromagnetic stainless steel, titanium (Ti), nickel (Ni) or any combination thereof, but it is not limited thereto. During electrolysis, only proton (H+) can pass through the film 26, thereby generating oxygen on the anode plate 22 side and hydrogen on the cathode plate 22’ side. Finally, oxygen and hydrogen are discharged through different fluid entering and exiting holes E, completing the hydrogen 10 production process. Control 1A: the device for hydrogen production by electrolysis (adopting PEM) The structure, components and the materials used of the device for hydrogen production by electrolysis of Control 1A are similar to those of Example 1A, and the main differences therebetween are that: no permanent magnet is disposed inside the device for 15 hydrogen production by electrolysis of Control 1A, and the power supply used by Control 1A is a traditional constant DC power supply mode. Apart from the aforementioned differences, Control 1A is prepared under the same conditions as Example 1A to obtain the device for hydrogen production by electrolysis of Control 1A. Comparative Example 1A: the device for hydrogen production by electrolysis 20 (adopting PEM) The structure, components and the materials used of the device for hydrogen production by electrolysis of Comparative Example 1A are similar to those of Example 1A, and the main differences therebetween are that: a single permanent magnet (area: 20 cm2, thickness: 1.5 mm, surface magnetic field strength: 0.2 T), capable of covering the entire flow channel 25 area, is disposed inside the first and second flow channel plates of the device for hydrogen 2026220186   18 Aug 2026 production by electrolysis of Comparative Example 1A. Apart from the aforementioned differences, Comparative Example 1A is prepared under the same conditions as Example 1A to obtain the device for hydrogen production by electrolysis of Comparative Example 1A. Test Example 1: Evaluation of hydrogen production efficiency by electrolysis 5            For evaluating the hydrogen production efficiency of each group, the current density under fixed operating voltage conditions, the operating voltage under fixed current density conditions and the hydrogen production per unit time of the devices for hydrogen production by electrolysis of Example 1, Example 2, Control 1, Comparative Example 1, Control 2, Comparative Example 2, Example 1A, Control 1A and Comparative Example 1A were 10 measured and analyzed by an electrochemical analyzer (manufacturer: CH Instrument; model: CHI630E) during the actual process of hydrogen production by electrolysis. For the current density under fixed operating voltage conditions, the current of Example 1, Example 2, Control 1, Comparative Example 1, Control 2 and Comparative Example 2 were measured when the operating voltage was fixed at 1.8 V; and the current of 15 Example 1A, Control 1A and Comparative Example 1A were measured when the operating voltage was fixed at 5.4 V. Then, the measured current of each group was divided by the electrode area to obtain the current density of each group. The results are listed in the following Table 1 and expressed in units of amperes per square centimeter (A / cm2). Besides, the following Table 1 also lists the percentage increase in current density for the other groups compared to 20 the control group, which is obtained by the equation: [(the current density of the other groups-the current density of the control group) / (the current density of the control group)]x100%. The current density represents the hydrogen production rate per unit area, and thus a higher current density at a fixed operating voltage represents an increased hydrogen production rate under the same energy consumption conditions. 2026220186   18 Aug 2026 For the operating voltage under fixed current density conditions, the operating voltage of Example 1, Example 2, Control 1, Comparative Example 1, Control 2 and Comparative Example 2 were measured when the current density was fixed at 1 A / cm2; and the operating voltage of Example 1A, Control 1A and Comparative Example 1A were measured when the 5 current density was fixed at 1 A / cm2. The results are listed in the following Table 2 and expressed in units of millivolts (mV). Besides, the following Table 2 also lists the reduction in operating voltage for the other groups compared to the control group, which is obtained by the equation: (the operating voltage of the other groups-the operating voltage of the control group). The reduction in operating voltage represents a decrease in system energy consumption and an 10 improvement in reaction kinetics, and thus a lower operating voltage at a fixed current density indicates better overall electrolysis efficiency. For the hydrogen production per unit time, the hydrogen production volume after electrolytic hydrogen production for a certain period of time of each group was collected and measured by a gas collection device and a gas flowmeter, and then the measured hydrogen 15 production volume was divided by the elapsed time to obtain the hydrogen production per unit time. The results are listed in the following Table 3 and expressed in units of milliliters per minute. Besides, the following Table 3 also lists the percentage increase in hydrogen production per unit time for the other groups compared to the control group, which is obtained by the equation: [(the hydrogen production per unit time of the other groups-the hydrogen production 20 per unit time of the control group) / (the hydrogen production per unit time of the control group)]x100%. The hydrogen production per unit time represents the amount of hydrogen that can be produced in the same period of time, and thus the higher the hydrogen production per unit time, the higher the hydrogen production efficiency. 2026220186   18 Aug 2026 Table 1: The results of measured current density under fixed operating voltage of Example 1, Comparative Example 1, Control 1, Example 2, Comparative Example 2, Control 2, Example 1A, Comparative Example 1A and Control 1A Group Current density (A / cm2) Percentage increase in current density compared to the control group Example 1 1.85 21.7% (compared to Control 1) Comparative Example 1 1.75 15.1% (compared to Control 1) Control 1 1.52 — Example 2 0.85 32.8% (compared to Control 2) Comparative Example 2 0.78 21.9% (compared to Control 2) Control 2 0.64 — Example 1A 1.8 28.6% (compared to Control 1A) Comparative Example 1A 1.68 20% (compared to Control 1A) Control 1A 1.4 — Table 2: The results of measured operating voltage under fixed current density of 5 Example 1, Comparative Example 1, Control 1, Example 2, Comparative Example 2, Control 2, Example 1A, Comparative Example 1A and Control 1A Group Operating voltage (mV) Reduction in operating voltage compared to the control group Example 1 1570 -185 mV (compared to Control 1) Comparative Example 1 1617 -138 mV (compared to Control 1) Control 1 1755 — Example 2 1735 -120 mV (compared to Control 2) Comparative Example 2 1763 -92 mV (compared to Control 2) Control 2 1855 — Example 1A 5550 -200 mV (compared to Control 1A) Comparative Example 1A 5598 -152 mV (compared to Control 1A) Control 1A 5750 — 2026220186   18 Aug 2026 Table 3: The results of measured hydrogen production per unit time of Example 1, Comparative Example 1, Control 1, Example 2, Comparative Example 2, Control 2, Example 1A, Comparative Example 1A and Control 1A Group Hydrogen production per unit time (milliliters per minute) Percentage increase in Hydrogen production per unit time compared to the control group Example 1 285 23% (compared to Control 1) Comparative Example 1 272 17% (compared to Control 1) Control 1 232 — Example 2 130 34% (compared to Control 2) Comparative Example 2 120 24% (compared to Control 2) Control 2 97 — Example 1A 831 30% (compared to Control 1A) Comparative Example 1A 786 23% (compared to Control 1A) Control 1A 639 — According to the results of Table 1 to Table 3 above, regardless of whether it is a 5 single-layered device for hydrogen production by electrolysis adopting PEM (i.e., Example 1, Comparative Example 1 and Control 1), a single-layered device for hydrogen production by electrolysis adopting AEM (i.e., Example 2, Comparative Example 2 and Control 2), or a threelayered device for hydrogen production by electrolysis adopting PEM (i.e., Example 1A, Comparative Example 1A and Control 1A), respectively compared to Control 1, Control 2 or 10 Control 1A under the same test conditions, Example 1, Example 2 or Example 1A respectively has higher current density, lower operating voltage and higher hydrogen production per unit time. This demonstrates that the device for hydrogen production by electrolysis of the instant disclosure can indeed significantly improve its hydrogen production efficiency by adopting technical means such as disposing multiple permanent magnets at specific sites inside the flow 15 channel plate. 2026220186   18 Aug 2026 Besides, please refer to the results of Comparative Example 1, Comparative Example 2 or Comparative Example 1A: the hydrogen production efficiency of Comparative Example 1, Comparative Example 2 or Comparative Example 1A is improved respectively compared to Control 1, Control 2 or Control 1A. However, the improvement in the hydrogen production 5 efficiency of Comparative Example 1, Comparative Example 2 or Comparative Example 1A is obviously less than that of Example 1, Example 2 or Example 1A. This indicates that, in the absence of adopting technical means such as disposing multiple permanent magnets at specific sites inside the flow channel plate, the improvement in hydrogen production efficiency of Comparative Example 1, Comparative Example 2 or Comparative Example 1A was obviously 10 worse indeed. In summary, the device for hydrogen production by electrolysis of the instant disclosure adopts technical means of disposing multiple permanent magnets on the specific sites inside the flow channel plate and selecting the specific kind of materials for the components thereof. Therefore, the device for hydrogen production by electrolysis of the instant disclosure 15 exhibits excellent hydrogen production efficiency through electrolysis, and also demonstrates better hydrogen production efficiency compared to the devices for hydrogen production by electrolysis in the prior arts, thereby contributing to the future development of green energy.
