Description

5 Keyway Generation Device for Lathe - Brief Description

[001] This patent application relates to equipment for making internal and external keyway slots in workpieces held in the chucks of a lathe. The base is fixed to the lathe bed for greater rigidity. A device that controls the movement (speed and reach) of the tool is fixed to the base. The movement is achieved by means of an assembly that performs a linear motion on a guide together with a chuck and ball screw driven by a stepper motor. The center of the tool is the same as the center of the lathe chuck, facilitating machining. FIELD OF APPLICATION

[002] The present invention pertains to the metalworking section, more specifically to the machining of shaft keys and flat machining on turned parts. CONVINCING

[003] Internal and external keyway cutting is appropriately performed on machines such as keyway cutting machines, planers, or milling machines, as well as CNC machines. For many companies, depending on the demand for this type of service, acquiring specific machines solely for this process is impractical. Parts requiring keyway cutting are typically shafts, pulleys, gears, or other rotating components; therefore, the part usually passes through a lathe at some point during its manufacturing process. To avoid losing the center and alignment of the part, some companies adapt the lathe with a lever or even the cross slide to perform keyway cutting. However, these types of processes damage the cross slide due to the generated stresses, causing wear and potential play in the bed and spindles, and are also imprecise.

[004] Thus, the proposal presented refers to the development of a system for making keyway slots with precision controlled by Petition 870200050509, dated 04 / 23 / 2020, page 5 / 17 / 5 advance given by the stepper motor. In addition to not needing to acquire a specific machine and increasing the company's expenses, the cross slide is spared wear and tear for which it was not designed. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[005] In the current state of the art there are some prior art descriptions of keyway generating devices fixed to a mechanical lathe. However, none of the prior art anticipates what is described in the present patent application, as noted below.

[006] Patent PI 8501770-1 refers to a tool holder for lathes that allows for the rapid approach and separation of the cutting tool from the workpiece by means of rack and pinion systems arranged longitudinally and transversely. The movement of this rack and pinion system is less precise than that proposed by the present patent application, since movement with a ball screw generates less backlash in the system. The control of the present patent application is carried out by stepper motors, which provides greater dimensional control of the keyway.

[007] Patent PI 0805701-0 refers to a keyway generating device that is attached to the lathe chuck. Its movement is achieved by a reciprocating device consisting of a worm screw driven by the rotation of the lathe chuck. In the present patent application, the movement of the keyway generator is generated by ball screws and stepper motors.

[008] Patent WO1996006704A refers to a numerically controlled keyway generating machine. The device is not adaptable to other types of machines. The present patent application can be adapted to the bed of mechanical lathes.

[009] Patent MU 7200365-0 refers to a keyway generating device adaptable to a lathe. The device uses a rotating cutting tool that is driven by means of rotation transmission from a motor to a pulley. It differs from the current patent application because the latter does not use a rotating cutting tool to generate the keyway. Petition 870200050509, dated 04 / 23 / 2020, page 6 / 17 / 5

[0010] Patent CA1197123A refers to a keyway generating device adaptable to a lathe. The device works by means of an electric motor drive that transmits the movement to a rotating tool, which machines the workpiece, generating the keyway. The current patent application does not use a rotating tool to generate the keyway, and the movement to generate the keyway is performed by stepper motors and ball screws. OBJECTIVE OF THE INVENTION

[0011] The present invention aims to provide a keyway generating device adaptable to a mechanical lathe controlled by a stepper motor. OF THE INVENTION

[0012] The present invention relates to a keyway generating device controlled by a stepper motor and guided by linear guides. The moving assembly is fixed to a structure that is attached to the lathe bed. At the end of the moving assembly is fixed a cutting tool that will generate the keyway by linear motion. ADVANTAGES OF THE INVENTION

[0013] In summary, the present invention has the following main advantages: ^ generation of keyways at a lower cost than on a dedicated machine; ^ device easily adaptable to a lathe; ^ precise control of dimensions and speeds achieved by a stepper motor; ^ Preservation of the machine due to the proper fixing of the device structure to the machine bus, unlike what happens in other types of adaptations. DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES

[0014] The invention will be described in a preferred embodiment, so, for better understanding, reference will be made to the figures: ^ Figure 1: Isometric view of the keyway generating device installed on the lathe. Petition 870200050509, dated 04 / 23 / 2020, page 7 / 17 / 5 Figure 2: Isometric view of the keyway generating device. Figure 3: Rear view of the keyway generating device. Figure 4: Side view of the keyway generating device. Figure 5: Top view of the keyway generating device. Figure 6: Detailed view of the longitudinal moving device. Figure 7: Detail of the transverse moving device. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0015] The keyway generating device consists of a locking plate (1) and a base (2) fixed to the lathe bed (17), with a longitudinal moving device (3) and a transverse moving device (4) driven by a stepper motor (7) and ball screw (8) and guided by two linear guides (9), and, moved by the device, a turret (5) that supports the tool (6). The movement of the turret is driven by a stepper motor (13) and ball screw (14) and guided by two linear guides (15). The stepper motor (13) is controlled by means of a programmable controller that transmits the cutting parameters desired by the lathe operator.

[0016] Similar to the fastening already used in mechanical lathes, the locking plate (1) is placed under the lathe bed (17) and by means of a screw that is tightened and joined to the base (2) so that the two parts do not move.

[0017] The longitudinal motion device (3) has a lower plate (10) that is fixed to the base (2) and has allocation for the linear guides (9), ball screw (8) and stepper motor (7). The stepper motor (7) is controlled by means of a programmable controller that transmits the cutting parameters desired by the lathe operator. The transverse motion device (4) is mounted on the longitudinal motion device (3). The transmission of movement from the lower to the upper part is given by the chuck (12) which moves linearly when the ball screw (8) rotates. The chuck (12) is fixed to the lower part of the transverse motion device (4). Petition 870200050509, dated 04 / 23 / 2020, page 8 / 17 / 5

[0018] To provide rigidity to the system, the transverse moving device (3) is supported on the linear guides (9) of the longitudinal moving device assembly (3). The castle (5) is mounted on the transverse moving device (4), which moves by transmitting the rotational movement of the ball screw (8) of the transverse moving device (4) to the nut (12) fixed to itself. In the upper part of the castle (5) there is a cavity in which the cutting tool (6) is located, which will generate the keyway. The tool (6) is fixed by tightening screws (16) in the upper part of the castle (5).

[0019] To install the keyway generating device, the cross slide must be moved away from the lathe to place the keyway generating device close to the lathe chuck. It is fixed by means of a screw joining the locking plate (1) and the base (2). The cutting tool (6) is placed in the tool post (5). After fixing the tool (6) to the tool post (5) and the base (2) to the lathe bed (17), it is possible to apply a “g” code to generate movement of the stepper motors of the cross slide (4) and longitudinal slide (3) to perform the keyway cutting.

[0020] The tool height is the same as the center of the workpiece. The keyway length is determined by the stepper motor (7). The keyway height is determined by automatic feed of the stepper motor (13) coupled to a spindle (14).

[0021] The KEYWAY GENERATING DEVICE FOR LATHE thus performs internal and external keyways in parts held in the jaws of a lathe (11).

[0022] Based on the above, it is observed that the KEYWAY GENERATING DEVICE FOR LATHE is deserving of the privilege of a patent of invention. Petition 870200050509, dated 04 / 23 / 2020, page 9 / 17
