Description

1 / 29 Cross-reference and priority A switching point roller assembly for related applications.

[0001] This application claims the benefit of priority for: Provisional US63 / 632,267 entitled ASSEMBLY SWITCH POINT ROLLER, filed April 10, 2024; and Non-Provisional US 19 / 067,717 entitled SWITCH POINT ROLLER ASSEMBLY, filed February 28, 2025.

[0002] All the above-mentioned orders are incorporated by reference in their entirety. BASIS

[0003] Railway switch points have several moving parts that are subject to maintenance operations to reduce mechanical failures. Typically, a switch point is moved with the help of a switching machine. As the force of the switching machine causes the switch point to move, the base of the switch point is in contact with the dorsal surfaces of the railway plates. Even if the switch point is floating above these surfaces, the forces of the passing railway stock cause the switch point to come into contact with these surfaces. Ideally, the switch point is only forced into a vertical movement. However, often the switch point is subject to longitudinal forces as well as vertical forces (from the rolling stock).

[0004] In the current state of the art, railway maintenance personnel administer lubricants at or near the switching point in order to reduce friction. However, these operations are laborious and therefore expensive. Furthermore, as with any human-based operation, maintenance operations can be subject to human error. Human error can lead to premature degradation of switching points which, at a minimum, increases the Petition 870250026496, dated 02 / 03 / 2025, page 24 / 240 2 / 29 long-term maintenance and / or replacement costs. In some cases, the switching point may seize completely due to lack of lubrication and become inoperable. In short, switching point failure can lead to property damage, potentially with loss of human life.

[0005] Even when administered correctly, lubricants have only one fixed duty cycle. Lubricants can degrade due to chemical composition, environmental factors, impurities, excessive friction, compaction, etc. Furthermore, the amount of lubricant applied can be excessive or insufficient – both of which can, again, lead to loss of property and even life. The effectiveness of the lubricant, even when administered correctly, is difficult to verify; that is, human operators cannot quickly or even easily determine if the lubricant is actually working as desired. In short, lubricants are not a completely viable solution for reducing friction at or near switching points.

[0006] What is needed is a set of switching point rollers that provide reduced maintenance, enhanced safety and many other benefits. SUMMARY

[0031] Several aspects will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. Wherever possible, the same reference numbers will be used in all drawings to refer to the same or similar parts. References made to specific examples and implementations are for illustrative purposes only and are not intended to limit the scope of the claims.

[0032] Railway maintenance is fundamental to the safety of personnel, passengers, and property. Typically, lubricants are used to keep moving parts within the rails. However, some mechanical solutions are deployed as needed to reduce maintenance and improve safety. That said, existing solutions have many problems that are solved by the solution disclosed herein. Petition 870250026496, dated 02 / 03 / 2025, page 29 / 240 7 / 29

[0033] Some existing switch point roller solutions rely on installation below the switch point. For example, the switch point roller may be attached to the sleeper (i.e., sleeper) and / or rail plate with upward-facing rollers that are in contact with the ventral surface of the moving switch point. These types of existing approaches can be considered complementary solutions. A disadvantage of these solutions is that installation usually requires the removal of existing hardware and components to access the installation point. For example, an entire rail sleeper may need to be removed and replaced to install the roller assemblies. Alternatively, the switch point may require significant adjustment to access the area where such a roller assembly would require installation.

[0034] In contrast, the disclosed solution is configured to be a top-down approach to the problem. The solution is configured to be connected to the switching point itself on the network (or busbar D) so that the switching point can be left in place during installation. Furthermore, the sleeper and / or rail plate can be left in position during installation. As such, the disclosed solution can be easily installed and inspected, avoiding mechanical alterations to additional track components.

[0035] Another problem with existing recharging solutions is the inability to easily inspect the installation and operation of the rolling assembly. Again, these types of solutions are installed below the moving switching point, sometimes inside the sleeper or the rail plate itself. When the device is in operation, personnel cannot see the actual operation of the device, but only the switching point and the surrounding components. Petition 870250026496, dated 02 / 03 / 2025, page 20 / 240 8 / 29 As such, the device may be malfunctioning without personnel noticing. This situation is generally worse than applying lubricants, as the device may seize up completely and lead to the failure of the entire switch.

[0036] In contrast, the disclosed solution is configured to be installed above the rail plate. As such, the disclosed solution is readily inspectable by personnel and / or more advanced techniques (e.g., automated inspection systems). Again, the disclosed solution is configured to be connected to or near the web of the switching point, being readily available for inspection.

[0037] Existing recharge solutions are difficult to maintain. Even assuming inspection is easily performed, existing devices still require non-trivial maintenance and replacement operations. This situation is often as difficult, if not more difficult, than the already difficult installation process. Situations can be foreseen where inspection reveals only a faulty bearing device, for example, by seizing the switching point. However, the exact faulty components may be unknown, as the device cannot be visually inspected without a significant removable adjustment of the switching point.

[0038] On the other hand, the disclosed solution is configured to be installed at or near the switching point. As such, the disclosed solution can be readily inspected and readily maintained. As with any railway component, the disclosed solution will be subject to severe wear and tear – including environmental and operational wear. Components may fail in the disclosed solution. For example, the roller may degrade due to environmental conditions. When this degradation is detected by personnel, the roller can be readily removed and replaced. Furthermore, this operation Petition 870250026496, dated 02 / 03 / 2025, page 27 / 240 9 / 29 is relatively fast when compared to existing solutions installed below the switching point.

[0039] Some existing solutions are secured by means of clamps at the base of the switching point. The clamps tend to fail because the clamping force is created by reciprocating clamps (or arms) that are secured by bolts. One cause of failure is loss of tension within the clamp (e.g., due to failure of one or more bolt assemblies). Another cause of failure is simply the operation of the rolling stock on the clamp, which essentially vibrates the rail clamp. Personnel must then inspect and adjust the clamps to ensure that the connected roller assemblies are still positioned and secured to support switching point transitions.

[0040] On the other hand, the disclosed solution is configured to be connected to or near the network of the switching point. The base plate of the disclosed solution can be bolted to the web in a D-bus assembly which, in turn, is connected to the switching point. As such, the disclosed solution relies on one or more bolts that are (1) easily accessible for installation and (2) readily tightened to hold the position.

[0041] Clamp-based solutions introduce interference problems on the railway. For example, the clamp usually extends below the rail (or switching point), which requires the movement area to be free of objects. Otherwise, the clamps can interfere with meter-side and / or field-side components. Even with the best clearance, conditions within the track change. For example, ballast can shift out of position and begin interfering with the clamps, leading to interference with the existing reloading solution. Another factor is compaction operations which can Petition 870250026496, dated 02 / 03 / 2025, page 22 / 240 10 / 29 simply reach the clamps and disconnect the clamp-based solution from the track.

[0042] On the other hand, the disclosed solution is configured to be protected in the switching point web. This configuration does not present the unnecessary risk of interference with gauge or track components. For example, ballast movement does not present a high level of risk when compared to clamp-based solutions that are installed at the rail base and / or switching point.

[0043] Some top-down solutions rely on mechanical arms that project from the rail web. These arms hold the roller that traverses the rail plate during the movement of the switching point. However, these arm-based solutions require tensioning to properly adjust the arm in order to create sufficient force to support the switching point during movement. Inadequate tension can render the roller ineffective. Alternatively, inadequate tension can cause the entire device to break when loaded.

[0044] In contrast, the disclosed solution relies on a roller assembly that is substantially oriented towards the rail plate. This configuration is based, in part, on a housing assembly that supports the roller assembly via a shaft. Minimal adjustment, if any, is required to allow proper contact between the roller and the rail plate (or sleeper).

[0045] Existing solutions often fail to protect sensitive hardware from track conditions. For example, some solutions have adjustment / tensioning hardware that is not protected against environmental elements. Other risks include maintenance equipment striking this type of hardware (e.g., during compaction operations). Petition 870250026496, dated 02 / 03 / 2025, page 29 / 240 11 / 29 Any damage to the adjustment hardware is undesirable. At a minimum, the damage will cause adjustments to deviate from the nominal value. At worst, the hardware component may be destroyed, leading to device failure. In short, existing solutions do not consider the extreme conditions that track components face when operating in the field.

[0046] In contrast, the disclosed solution is configured so that sensitive hardware receives additional protection against such hazards, damage, etc. For example, the switching point bearing assembly is configured so that a set of screws is partially protected, by means of a bearing assembly, against scratches. This protection ensures that adjustments are maintained throughout deployment, but also that the screw assembly has a longer duty cycle. The housing assembly is configured to provide protection without hindering inspection, adjustment, and maintenance of the components. Similar protection is provided to the spring and roller assembly, as will be disclosed below. In short, the disclosed solution provides enhanced component protection without sacrificing maintainability.

[0047] Some existing solutions require careful adjustments to provide consistent contact between the roller and the track component (e.g., rail plate). However, any adjustment will be imperfect. For example, a rail plate itself may be uneven. As such, a static adjustment may not be sufficient to maintain contact between the roller and the rail plate.

[0048] In contrast, the disclosed solution is configured to maintain consistent contact between the roller assembly and the rail plate. The commutation point roller assembly comprises a housing assembly that is substantially in contact with a spring which, in turn, is in contact Petition 870250026496, dated 02 / 03 / 2025, p. 24 / 240 12 / 29 with a base plate. The interaction of these components is such that the roller assembly maintains substantially consistent contact with the rail plate. Even with uneven surfaces on the rail plate, the roller assembly is configured to adjust dynamically.

[0049] Other benefits over existing solutions should be disclosed below through various modalities / aspects of the disclosed solutions. One of the skills in the art will appreciate that the disclosed solution addresses many problems in the industry. As such, the maintenance of railway systems is improved, which in turn leads to greater safety for personnel, passengers and property.

[0050] FIG. 1A is a plan view of a set of switching point rollers (100), as shown from a front perspective. A plurality of axes is shown, namely, a first axis (103X) (projected towards the viewer), a second axis (103Y) and a third axis (103Z). The axis (103X) is perpendicular to the direction of the rolling stock traveling along the track. The axis (103Y) is parallel to the direction of travel of the rolling stock moving along the track. The axis (103Z) is vertical, formed by the normal vector of the axes (103X, 103Y).

[0051] The switching point roller assembly (100) comprises a base plate (101) comprising a plurality of slots (127Z). The plurality of slots (127Z) comprises a first slot (127A) and a second slot (127B). The plurality of slots (127Z) is configured to allow the switching point roller assembly (100) to be operationally connected to a switching point. Petition 870250026496, dated 02 / 03 / 2025, p. 25 / 240 13 / 29

[0052] In one aspect, the switching point may have a shape that is not entirely formed by right angles. In other words, the warp of the track may have a curved shape. In the industry, the track may be referred to as a Vignoles track, a T-track, an asymmetric track, etc. As such, the track may have a D-bar that provides an interface with the track (or switching point) so that the substantially flat surface of the baseplate (101) can be operationally connected to the track (via the D-bar interface). In another aspect, the track (or switching point) may already be substantially flat and not require a D-bar interface – in which case the baseplate (101) may be connected directly to the track (or switching point) via hardware that passes through the plurality of slots (127Z).

[0053] As shown, the base plate (101) is substantially flat on the distal and proximal surfaces (as seen from axis (103X)). However, the base plate (101), in one configuration, can be designed so that the surface of the base plate (101) interacts directly with any web shape. In other words, the base plate (101) can be a combination of bar D and base plate (101), as shown instantly.

[0054] As shown, the base plate (101) is represented without associated hardware for operationally connecting the base plate (101) to the switching point. One of the skilled in the art will appreciate that various screws, nuts, lock washers, washers, bolts, etc. can be used to fasten the switching point roller assembly (100) to the switching point. In one aspect, the base plate (101) can be permanently fixed to the switching point (e.g., by means of welding).

[0055] The switching point roller assembly (100) further comprises a housing (102) which is generally configured to house a roller (105). The Petition 870250026496, dated 02 / 03 / 2025, p. 26 / 240 14 / 29 roller (105) can be made of polymer, polyester, urethane, tempered steel, sealed glass (with nylon interior), etc. The material chosen may also depend on the operating environment as well as implementation considerations (e.g., cost). Roller (105) allows movement of the switching point across the rail plate during switching point transitions caused by a switching machine. Therefore, when the switching point is under load from the rail stock, roller (105) provides rotational movement of the switching point roller assembly (100).

[0056] The housing (102) substantially houses a shaft retainer (108) which is operationally connected to a shaft (109) (which is not visible in the instant view). The shaft (109) is operationally connected to the roller (105) so that, again, the roller (105) can roll across the rail plate when the commutation point is in motion or under rolling stock load. An advantage of the configuration of the shaft retainer (108) and bearing (102) is to substantially protect the moving parts associated with the roller (105) (e.g., needle bearings, bushings, retaining rings, etc.). Furthermore, the housing (102) allows for the retention of the shaft (109), as will be shown in subsequent views.

[0057] The housing (102) is operationally connected to a shaft (107) projecting from the housing (102). The shaft (107) is retained by a plurality of retaining rings (106Z) (comprising a first retaining ring (106A) and a second retaining ring (106B)). The retaining rings may be referred to as locking rings or locking rings in the industry. The plurality of retaining rings (106Z) is generally configured to retain the shaft (107) projecting from the housing (102) in a projection (112) (not shown in the snapshot). The snapshot does not show Petition 870250026496, dated 02 / 03 / 2025, p. 27 / 240 15 / 29 an internal protrusion of the base plate (101) which provides a pivot about which the housing (102) can move. That said, the shaft (107) passes through the protrusion (112) and operationally connects the housing (102) to the base plate (101) (through the shaft (107)).

[0058] The housing (102) is configured to rotate around the shaft (107) so that the roller (105) maintains contact with the rail plate, on which the commutation point often rests (through the commutation point roller assembly (100) as a whole). This contact is maintained, in part, by the force created by a spring (111) (not shown) which affects the rotation around the shaft (107).

[0059] The roller (105) is adjusted by means of a screw (114). The screw (114) comprises an internal hexagonal head (114A), a first segment (114B), a second segment (114C) (not shown) and a third segment (114D) (not shown). The internal hexagonal head (114A) allows adjustment of the screw (114) which is operationally connected to the shaft retainer (108). The screw (114) is generally configured to allow adjustment of the shaft retainer (108) (and the associated roller (105)) to provide effective rolling of the roller assembly from the switching point (100) on the rail plate.

[0060] The housing (102) comprises a first plurality of surfaces (140Z). The first plurality of surfaces (140Z) comprises a first surface (140A), a second surface (140B), a third surface (140C) and a fourth surface (140D). The plurality of surfaces (140Z) provides a partial housing for the screw (114) and nut (113) (both of which can be considered a set of screws (130)), specifically the surfaces (140B, 140C, 140D). Petition 870250026496, dated 02 / 03 / 2025, page 28 / 240 16 / 29

[0061] As stated, railway operating environments present many hazards, both mechanical and environmental. Objects can strike track elements and cause damage. Surfaces (140B, 140C) are configured to deflect objects that may strike the screw assembly (130) from the direction of travel of the rolling stock (along the axis (103Y)). For example, a drag chain would be deflected from the hexagonal head (114A) of the screw (114) by surface (140C). A particular advantage of the partial enclosure is that the screw assembly (130) can still be repaired by tools. Furthermore, the screw assembly (130) is still subject to visual inspection without removing a hood or cover on the housing (102).

[0062] Railway tracks are routinely serviced through two processes that are particularly dangerous for equipment and components on or near the tracks. The first is compaction, which is the process of adjusting the ballast on or near the track. On many railways, the ballast consists of heavy rocks that are moved into position and compacted for stability. As such, the rocks (and other substrates) are distributed to undesirable places on the track (e.g., a rock falling between a switching point). To clear the ballast, a brushing process is used to mechanically brush the excess ballast from the track. In short, the compaction and brushing process is harsh on railway components.

[0063] Therefore, the surfaces (140B, 140C, 104D) are configured to protect the screw assembly (130) from these compaction and brushing processes. A person skilled in the art will appreciate that the screw assembly (130) may have sensitive adjustments that a compaction machine and / or a brushing machine may inadvertently damage, or simply cause the screw assembly (130) to become misaligned. Petition 870250026496, dated 02 / 03 / 2025, page 29 / 240 17 / 29

[0064] The housing (102) comprises a plurality of surfaces (155Z) on the ventral surface of the housing. The plurality of surfaces (155Z) comprises a first surface (155A) and a second surface (155B) (not shown in the snapshot). The plurality of surfaces (155Z) is further arranged to partially protect the roller (105). As stated, railway operating environments are hazardous. The plurality of surfaces (155Z) is configured to partially protect the roller (105) from damage. In addition, the plurality of surfaces (155Z) is configured to protect the shaft (109) and the shaft retainer (108). Furthermore, the plurality of surfaces (155Z) is configured to retain the shaft (109) without additional hardware, if so configured.

[0065] The screw (114) can be locked by means of a nut (113) on the surface (140A) of the housing (102). Additional hardware can be used to secure the screw (114) in position (e.g., locking washers, washers, retaining rings, etc.).

[0066] FIG. 1B is a plan view of a set of commutation point rollers (100), as shown from a side perspective. The snapshot view shows more clearly the spring (111) in contact between the base plate (101) and the bearing (102). The housing (102) is configured to interact with the forces associated with the spring (111) to cause the roller (105) to maintain contact with the rail plate.

[0067] The spring (111) is shown as a synthetic material (e.g., polyester). Polyester has the advantage of being relatively inexpensive while still providing the necessary forces to allow the roller (105) to maintain contact with the rail plate. One of the skilled in the art will appreciate that the spring (111) is corrosion resistant when made of polymer, polyester, urethane, Petition 870250026496, dated 02 / 03 / 2025, page 30 / 240 18 / 29 etc. Furthermore, these materials are easily recognized in a degraded state through visual and / or physical inspection.

[0068] However, the spring (111) may be of other materials, depending on the environment and / or implementation factors. For example, the spring (111) may be based on Belleville washers which are metal. If the Belleville washers are made of stainless steel, the risk of corrosion may be mitigated. Belleville washers, however, may fail catastrophically if one or more washers tear, corrode and / or degrade. Therefore, polymer-based springs have the advantage of being potentially failure-resistant. Other mechanical springs may be used beyond the scope of this disclosure (e.g. helical springs, Belleville washers, etc.).

[0069] The shaft (107) passes through the protrusion (112) in the base plate (101). The nature of the spring (111), the protrusion (112) and the shaft (107) allow a rotary movement of the housing (102), which in turn allows the rolling movement of the roller (105) against the rail plate.

[0070] Anyone skilled in the art will appreciate that the spring (111) is substantially protected against damage that may be caused by railway maintenance operations. For example, railway tracks are frequently cleaned by machines that rely on brushing operations which can damage sensitive moving parts. The spring (111) is one such component that can be damaged. However, the configuration of the housing (102) and base plate (101) allows the spring (111) to be substantially protected against damage, while at the same time allowing access to the spring (111) for typical maintenance operations and checks.

[0071] Surfaces (155A, 155B) are shown in more detail in the snapshot view. Axis (109) is partially covered by the plane. Petition 870250026496, dated 02 / 03 / 2025, page 37 / 240 19 / 29 parallel to the surface (155A). Furthermore, the shaft retainer (108) is partially covered by each of the parallel planes formed by the surfaces (155A, 155B), respectively. One of the skilled craftsmen will appreciate that the surfaces (155A, 155B) are configured to be closer to where the roller (105) and the rail plate contact occurs. This proximity allows the roller (105) to move freely while protecting the roller (105), the shaft (109), and the shaft retainer (108) from damage and hazards. An advantage of this configuration is enabling this protection while simultaneously allowing visual inspection as well as maintenance operations. Additionally, this configuration allows the shaft (109) to be retained by the shaft retainer (108) without the need for additional hardware (e.g., lock washers).

[0072] FIG. 1C is a plan view of the switching point roller assembly (100), as shown from a top perspective. The snapshot view shows the spring (111) in contact with the base plate (101) and the housing (102). The spring (111) is slightly disposed below the surface of the base plate (101); however, this aspect is not clearly shown in the snapshot view, but will be shown in subsequent views.

[0073] One advantage of the bearing (102) is that the screw (114) and nut (113) are protected against damage, as indicated above in FIG. 1A. The snapshot clearly shows that said protection is not achieved at the expense of immediate access to the screw (114) and nut (113). One skilled in the art will appreciate the clearance provided by the housing (102) which allows access to both the internal hexagon head (114A) and the nut (113). Therefore, the configuration of the screw (114) and housing (102) achieves a balance between robust operation and ease of adjustment. Petition 870250026496, dated 02 / 03 / 2025, p. 32 / 240 20 / 29

[0074] The housing (102) comprises a second plurality of surfaces (142Z). The second plurality of surfaces (142Z) comprises a first surface (142A), a second surface (142B), a third surface (142C) and a fourth surface (142D). As with the plurality of surfaces (140Z), the plurality of surfaces (142Z) provides protection for the spring (111). As stated above, track components are subject to extreme operating conditions. The spring (111) is no exception and may be struck by objects or inadvertently damaged by maintenance equipment (e.g., brushing machines). To mitigate damage, the surfaces (142B, 142C) are specifically configured to protect against damage caused by objects moving parallel to the rolling stock (along the axis (103Y)).

[0075] As with the plurality of surfaces (140Z,), the plurality of surfaces (142Z) is configured to allow easy visual inspection and maintenance of the spring (111). In one respect, the spring (111) can be a relatively low-cost synthetic material and easily replaceable. With minimal effort, maintenance personnel can replace the spring (111) based on a quick visual inspection.

[0076] The surface (142D) acts to provide a reciprocal surface to the base plate (101) in relation to the spring (111). The housing (102) is configured to move along the axis (103X) under load, and the spring (111) is configured to manage this force to allow the roller (105) to maintain substantial contact with the rail plate.

[0077] FIG. 1D is a plan view of a switching point roller assembly, as shown from a side perspective. The snapshot shows the switching point roller assembly (100) in a section. Petition 870250026496, dated 02 / 03 / 2025, page 39 / 240 21 / 29 to better highlight the components. The spring (111) is shown in contact with the base plate (101). The base plate (101) comprises a spring support (116). The spring support (116) is configured to be below the surface of the base plate (101), in part, to stabilize the spring (111) during the movement operations of the switching point and the switching point roller assembly (100) as a whole.

[0078] The shaft (107) is shown in more detail in the protrusion (112). The protrusion comprises a hole (115). A locking screw (135) is shown inside a threaded hole (133). The threaded hole (133) is perpendicular to the hole (115). When the shaft (107) is disposed inside the hole (115) (parallel to the shaft (103Y)), the locking screw (135) is configured to be in contact with the shaft (107) to reduce the rotation of the shaft (107) inside the hole (115). Without the locking screw (135) engaged, the shaft (107) can rotate internally inside the hole (115).

[0079] The snapshot shows the surfaces (155A, 155B) being configured to partially cover the shaft (109), the shaft seal (108) and the roller (105). Again, this housing configuration (102) allows the shaft (109) to be retained without additional hardware (e.g., retaining rings). Similarly, the housing (102) partially protects the roller (105), the shaft (109) and the shaft seal (108).

[0080] FIG. 2A is a perspective view of the switching point roller assembly (100), as shown from a top perspective. The snapshot view shows more clearly the spring (111) being disposed in the spring holder (116).

[0081] FIG. 2B is a perspective view of the switching point roller assembly (100), as shown from a bottom perspective. A Petition 870250026496, dated 02 / 03 / 2025, p. 44 / 240 22 / 29 instant view shows the roller (105) in more detail, so that the shaft (109) is shown within the associated shaft retainer (108). The shaft retainer (108) is configured to hold the shaft (109) using the interior of the housing (102). This configuration provides for the retention of the shaft (109) with a reduced reliance on set screws, lock washers, retaining rings, threading, etc.; to be clear, one of the skills in the art may still rely on such additional hardware depending on deployment considerations. Furthermore, this housing configuration (102) provides enhanced protection of the components within the housing (102) (e.g., the roller (105)).

[0082] Furthermore, the housing configuration (102) allows the screw (114) to be adjusted to provide access to the roller (105), the shaft (109), and the shaft seal (108). For example, the nut (113) can start in a tight state to hold the screw (114) in place. To adjust the screw (114), the nut (113) can first be loosened (or completely removed). Then, the screw (114) can be adjusted and / or completely removed, thus allowing the shaft retainer (108) to fall freely from the housing (102). When removed, the shaft seal (108) can allow the removal of the shaft (109) and the roller (105). These operations allow for the maintenance and / or replacement of these moving parts, so that the switching point roller assembly (100) can be repaired during a given work cycle with ease. Thus, the set of switching point rollers (100) provides durable means to provide safe operation of switching points.

[0083] The instant view shows in detail the threaded hole (133) inside the protrusion (112). The threaded hole (113) is configured to receive the fixing screw (135). The fixing screw (135) may have a Petition 870250026496, dated 02 / 03 / 2025, p. 45 / 240 23 / 29 hexagonal head in one aspect. The fixing screw (135) can be adjusted to reduce the rotation of the shaft (107) when the roller (105) moves substantially along the shaft (103X) during the operation of the switching point roller assembly (101). One of the skilled in the art will appreciate that the fixing screw (135) allows the servicing and replacement of component parts (e.g., the shaft (107)).

[0084] FIG. 3A is a perspective view of the switching point roller assembly (100), as shown exploded and from a top perspective. The snapshot view shows more clearly the screw assembly (130) comprising the screw (114) and nut (113). The screw (114) comprises the internal hexagon head (114A), as disclosed above. The segment (114B) is externally threaded. The segment (114C) is not threaded and has a reduced diameter from the segment (114B) to accommodate a bushing. The segment (114D) has a further reduced diameter and accommodates a retaining ring.

[0085] FIG. 3B is a perspective view of the commutation point roller assembly (100), as shown exploded and from a top perspective. The snapshot view shows a roller assembly (128) in more detail. The roller assembly (128) comprises a plurality of needle roller bearings (118Z), the shaft (109), the roller (105), the shaft retainer (108), a retaining ring (120) and a bushing (119). The plurality of needle roller bearings (118Z) comprises a first needle roller bearing (118A) and a second needle roller bearing (118B). The plurality of needle roller bearings (118Z) is generally configured to allow the roller (105) to roll on the shaft (109).

[0086] The shaft seal (108) comprises a plurality of holes (122Z) and a hole (124). The plurality of holes (122Z) consists of a first hole Petition 870250026496, dated 02 / 03 / 2025, p. 46 / 240 24 / 29 (122A) and a second hole (122B). The plurality of holes (122Z) allows for the retention of the shaft (109). Again, this retention is advantageous because the housing itself (102) provides stability of the shaft (109) in the direction of the shaft (103Y). As such, fixing screws are not required to retain the shaft (109). The hole (124) is generally configured to provide an interface between the screw assembly (130) and the roller assembly (128).

[0087] FIG. 3C is a perspective view of the switching point roller assembly (100), as shown exploded and from a top perspective. The snapshot view more clearly depicts a housing assembly (129). The plurality of bushings (117Z) comprises a first bushing (117A) (obscured in the snapshot view) and a second bushing (117B). The plurality of bushings (117Z) is generally configured to support the shaft (107).

[0088] The housing (102) comprises the surface (140A), a hole (123) and a plurality of holes (121Z). The plurality of holes (121Z) comprises a first hole (121A) (obscured in the instant view) and a second hole (121B). The hole (123) is threaded and accommodates the screw assembly (130) for operationally connecting the roller assembly (128) to the housing assembly (129). The plurality of holes (121Z) is generally configured to support the shaft (107) (through the plurality of bushings (117Z)).

[0089] FIG. 3D is a perspective view of the switching point roller assembly (100), as shown exploded and from a top perspective. The snapshot view shows the base plate (101) in more detail. The base plate (101) comprises the spring support (116), the plurality of Petition 870250026496, dated 02 / 03 / 2025, p. 47 / 240 25 / 29 grooves (127Z), the protrusion (112), the hole (115) and the threaded hole (133). The spring support (116) is generally configured to provide force interactions (through the spring (111)) between the base plate (101) and the housing assembly (129). The spring support (116) comprises an outer spring support (116A) and an inner spring support (116B). The outer spring support (116A) is generally configured to support the spring (111) on the outer circumference of the spring (111). The inner spring support (116B) is generally configured to support the spring (111) on the inner circumference of the spring (111) and to prevent the spring (111) from shifting.

[0090] The protrusion (112) comprises the hole (115). The hole (115) is generally configured to allow the shaft (107) to pass through the protrusion (112) to operationally connect the housing assembly (129) to the base plate (101). The threaded hole (133) is configured to accept the fixing screw (135) which is used to reduce the rotation of the shaft (107) within the hole (115). As stated above, the threaded hole (133) is oriented along the axis (103Z) and intersects with the hole (115).

[0091] FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the switching point roller assembly (100), as shown exploded and from a top perspective. The snapshot view shows more clearly the combination of the base plate (101), spring (111), screw assembly (130), roller assembly (128) and housing assembly (129). Furthermore, the snapshot view is at a slightly different angle than that of FIGS. 3A-3D to highlight various aspects of the switching point roller assembly (100). A further high-level summary of the main aspects follows.

[0092] The base plate (101) is operationally connected to the spring (111) in the outer spring support (116A) and in the inner spring support (116B). From the same Petition 870250026496, dated 02 / 03 / 2025, p. 48 / 240 26 / 29 shape, the spring (111) is in contact with the housing (102). This contact allows the roller (105) to maintain substantial contact with the rail plate.

[0093] The housing assembly (129) is operationally connected to the base plate (101) via the protrusion (112) through the hole (115). Specifically, the shaft (107) passes through the hole (121A), the bushing (117A), the hole (115), the bushing (117B) and the hole (121B). The retaining rings (106A, 106B) are fixed to the shaft (107) to retain the housing (102) on the base plate (101) (via the protrusion (112) and the hole (115)). The fixing screw (135) can engage through the threaded hole (133) to reduce the rotation of the shaft (107).

[0094] The roller assembly (128) is operationally connected to the housing assembly (129) via the screw assembly (130). The bushing (119) is disposed in the hole (124). The screw assembly (130) is usually disposed in the hole (123). The screw segment (114D) is operationally connected to the locking ring (120). The screw segment (114C) is disposed inside the bushing (119). The screw segment (114B) is disposed on the dorsal surface of the bushing (119). The internal hexagon head (114A) is used to secure and / or adjust the roller assembly (128) in relation to the housing assembly (129). The nut (113) can then be used to secure the screw assembly (130), in turn securing the roller assembly (128) to the housing assembly (129) on the surface (140A).

[0095] The snapshot shows that the housing (102) is configured to retain the shaft (109) of the roller assembly (128). Someone skilled in the art will notice that the shaft (109) is configured, in one aspect, to avoid the need for additional hardware for retaining the shaft (109). For example, locking / retaining rings are not required. Although the Petition 870250026496, dated 02 / 03 / 2025, p. 49 / 240 27 / 29 instant view show the shaft (109) without locking / retaining rings, someone skilled in the art may still desire such retention mechanisms without departing from the ability of the housing (102) to substantially retain the shaft seal (108) and the shaft (109) without additional hardware.

[0096] FIG. 5A is a perspective view of the switching point roller assembly (100), as shown from a top perspective. The snapshot view is provided to emphasize that the plurality of surfaces (140Z) partially protects the screw assembly (130). The plurality of planes (151Z) shows how the screw (114) is below the plurality of planes (151Z) within the housing (102). As stated, this configuration allows the screw assembly (130) to be adjusted, inspected, maintained, etc., without sacrificing the necessary protection against environmental and / or mechanical hazards.

[0097] FIG. 5B is a perspective view of the switching point roller assembly (100), as shown from a bottom perspective. The snapshot view is provided to emphasize the plurality of surfaces (155Z) being configured to partially protect the roller (105), the shaft (109) and the shaft seal (108). As stated, railway operating environments present many hazards that cause damage to components. As such, the plurality of surfaces (155Z) is positioned to provide coverage without sacrificing the ability to adjust, inspect, maintain, etc. the roller assembly (128) (e.g., roller (105)).

[0098] FIG. 5C is a plan and cross view of the switching point roller assembly (100), as shown from a side perspective.

[0099] The disclosed solution can be configured as a kit set. In one aspect, the kit set can include the switching point roller assembly.
