Abstract
Description
64 METHOD FOR CHANNEL STATE INFORMATION FEEDBACK, METHOD FOR A BASE STATION, AND USER EQUIPMENT Technical Field
[001] This description refers to wireless communications and, in particular, to dynamic indication for channel status information feedback (CSI). Fundamentals of the Invention
[002] The fifth generation of mobile and wireless telecommunications technology is not yet fully defined, but is in an advanced stage of preparation in 3GPP. This includes work on 5G New Radio Access (NR) Technology. LTE terminology is used in this description in an innovative sense, to include equivalent 5G entities or functionalities, although different terms may be specified in 5G. A general description of the agreements on 5G New Radio Access (NR) Technology to date is contained in 3GPP TR 38.802 V1.0.0 (2016-11). Final specifications may be published, among others, in future 3GPP TS 38.3** and / or 38.2** series.
[003] The next generation of mobile wireless communication systems, such as fifth generation (5G) or new radio (NR), will support a diverse set of use cases and a diverse set of deployment scenarios. The latter includes deployment at both low frequencies (hundreds of MHz), similar to today's Long Term Evolution (LTE), and very high frequencies (millimeter waves in the tens of GHz). At high frequencies, propagation characteristics make achieving good coverage challenging. One solution to the coverage problem is to employ high-gain beamforming, typically facilitated by analog circuit systems, in order to achieve a satisfactory link budget. Beamforming will also be used at lower frequencies (typically, the Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, page 14 / 131 / 64 digital beamforming that primarily uses the digital circuit system), and is expected to be similar in nature to the already standardized LTE (4G) system of the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).
[004] Of particular relevance is Section 6.10.5 of the 3GPP TS 36.211 V14.1.0 (2016-12) standard, which refers to the Channel State Information Reference Signal (CSI-RS). A similar signal is expected to be designed for NR as well, and it is the subject of this description.
[005] Note that the terminology used here, such as Node B (gNB) and Wireless Device (WD) New Radio, should be considered non-limiting and does not imply a certain hierarchical relationship between the two; in general, “gNB” can be read as a reference to generic device 1 and “WD” as device 2, where these two generic devices can communicate with each other through some radio channel. Alternatively, other terminology, such as “gNodeB”, “eNodeB” and “eNB”, can be used in place of “gNB” in different communication systems.
[006] LTE and NR use orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) on the downlink and spread discrete Fourier transform (DFT) OFDM or OFDM on the uplink. The physical feature on the basic LTE or NR downlink can thus be viewed as a time-frequency grid, as illustrated in Figure 1, where each feature element corresponds to an OFDM subcarrier during an OFDM symbol interval. Although a subcarrier spacing of Δf = 15 kHz is shown in Figure 1, different values of subcarrier spacing are supported in NR. The supported subcarrier spacing values (also referred to as different numerologies) in NR are given by Δf = (15χ2Λα) kHz, where α is a non-negative integer.
[007] In the time domain, downlink transmissions LTE signals are organized into 10 ms radio frames, each radio frame Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, page 15 / 131 / 64, consisting of ten equally sized subframes of length Tsubframe = 1 ms, as shown in Figure 2. A similar frame structure can also be used in NR, where the subframe length is fixed at 1 ms, regardless of the subcarrier spacing used. The number of intervals per subframe depends on the configured subcarrier spacing. The interval duration for a subcarrier spacing of (15 x α2) kHz is given by 1 / α2 ms, considering 14 OFDM symbols per interval.
[008] Furthermore, resource allocation in LTE is typically described in terms of resource blocks, where a resource block (RB) corresponds to an interval (0.5 ms) in the time domain and 12 contiguous subcarriers in the frequency domain. Resource blocks are numbered in the frequency domain, starting with 0 from the end of the system bandwidth. In NR, resource allocation in the time domain can be in interval units (i.e., interval-based transmission) or in length units smaller than an interval (i.e., non-interval-based transmission).
[009] Downlink transmissions are dynamically scheduled, that is, in each subframe, gNB transmits control information regarding which terminal data is transmitted, and over which resource blocks the data is transmitted, in the current downlink subframe. This control signaling is typically transmitted in the first 1, 2, 3, or 4 OFDM symbols in each subframe in LTE and 1 or 2 OFDM symbols in NR. A downlink system with 3 OFDM symbols as control for LTE is illustrated in Figure 3. Precoding Based on Codebook
[0010] Multi-antenna techniques can significantly increase the data rates and reliability of a wireless communication system. Performance is particularly improved if both the transmitter and the Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, page 16 / 131 / 64 receivers are equipped with multiple antennas, resulting in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication channel. Such systems and / or related techniques are commonly referred to as MIMO.
[0011] NR is currently evolving with support for MIMO. A central component in NR is support for MIMO antenna implementations and MIMO-related techniques, including beamforming at higher carrier frequencies. Currently, LTE and NR support an 8-layer spatial multiplexing mode for up to 32 transmit (Tx) antennas with channel-dependent precoding. The spatial multiplexing mode is targeted for high data rates under favorable channel conditions. An illustration of spatial multiplexing operation is provided in Figure 4.
[0012] As seen in Figure 4, the symbol vector s carrying the information is multiplied by an NTx r W precoder matrix, which serves to distribute the transmission energy in a subspace of the NT-dimensional vector space (corresponding to NT antenna ports). The precoder matrix is typically selected from a codebook of possible precoder matrices, and typically indicated by a precoder matrix indicator (PMI), which specifies a unique precoder matrix in the codebook for a given number of continuous symbol streams. Each of the symbols r in s corresponds to a layer, r is referred to as the transmission rank. In this way, spatial multiplexing is achieved since multiple symbols can be transmitted simultaneously through the same time / frequency resource element (TFRE). The number of symbols r is typically adapted to satisfy the current channel properties.
[0013] LTE and NR use OFDM on the downlink and therefore the NR x 1 yn received vector for a certain TFRE on subcarrier n (or, alternatively, the number n of TFREs of the data) is therefore modeled by Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, p. 17 / 131 / 64 yn = HnWSn + em where en is a noise / interference vector obtained as realizations of a random process. The precoder, W, can be a wideband precoder, which is frequency constant or frequency selective.
[0014] The precoder matrix is often chosen to match the characteristics of the NR x NT Hn MIMO channel matrix, resulting in so-called channel-dependent precoding. This is also commonly referred to as closed-loop precoding and essentially strives to focus the transmission energy into a subspace that is strong in driving much of the transmitted energy to the WD. Furthermore, the precoder matrix can also be selected to strive to orthogonalize the channel, meaning that after appropriate linear equalization in the WD, interlayer interference is reduced.
[0015] The transmission rank, and thus the number of spatially multiplexed layers, is reflected in the number of columns in the precoder. For efficient performance, a transmission rank that matches the channel properties should be selected. Channel State Information (CSI) Estimation and Feedback Based on Codebook
[0016] In LTE closed-loop MIMO transmission schemes, such as transmission mode 9 and transmission mode 10, a WD estimates and feeds back CSI on the downlink to eNodeB. The eNB uses the feedback CSI to transmit the downlink data to the WD. The CSI consists of a transmission rank indicator (RI), a precoding matrix indicator (PMI), and one or more channel quality indicators (CQI). A codebook of precoding matrices is used by the WD to find the best match between the channel in Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, p. 18 / 131 / 64 estimated downlink Hn and a precoding matrix in the codebook based on certain criteria, for example, WD throughput. The channel Hn is estimated based on a Non-Zero Power CSI (CSI-RS NZP) reference signal transmitted on the downlink for transmission mode 9 and transmission mode 10.
[0017] The CQI / RI / PMI, together, provide the downlink channel state to the WD. This is also referred to as implicit CSI feedback since the Hn estimate is not directly fed back. The CQI / RI / PMI can be broadband or sub-band, depending on which reporting mode is configured.
[0018] The RI corresponds to a recommended number of continuous streams that should be spatially multiplexed and thus transmitted in parallel across the downlink channel. The PMI identifies a code word from the recommended precoding matrix (in a codebook containing precoders with the same number of lines as the number of CSI-RS ports) for the transmission, which refers to the spatial characteristics of the channel. The CQI represents a recommended transport block size (i.e., code rate), and LTE supports the transmission of one or two simultaneous transmissions (in different layers) of transport blocks (i.e., the separately encoded information blocks) to a WD in a subframe. There is therefore a relationship between a CQI and a signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of the spatial continuous stream(s) across which the transport block(s) are transmitted.
[0019] Codebooks with up to 16 antenna ports were defined in LTE above Edition 13. Both one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) antenna arrays are supported. For LTE Edition 12 and earlier, only one codebook feedback for a one-dimensional (1D) port scheme is supported, with 2, 4, or 8 antenna ports. Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, page 19 / 131 / 64 Therefore, the codebook is designed considering that these ports are arranged in a straight line in one dimension. For LTE Rel-13, codebooks for two-dimensional (2D) port schemes were specified for the case of 8, 12, or 16 antenna ports. Furthermore, a codebook for the 1D port scheme for the case of 16 antenna ports was also specified in LTE Rel-13. In LTE Rel-14, the 1D and 2D codebooks are extended to 32 ports (specifically, 1D and 2D codebooks for 20, 24, 28, and 32 ports are supported in LTE Rel-14).
[0020] In LTE Rel-13, two types of CSI reporting were introduced, namely Class A and Class B. In Class A CSI reporting, a WD measures and reports CSI based on a new codebook for the 2D antenna array configured with 8, 12, or 16 antenna ports. The Class A codebook is defined by five parameters, namely (N1, N2, Q1, Q2, CodebookConfig), where (N1, N2) are the number of antenna ports in a first and second dimension, respectively. (Q1, Q2) are the DFT oversampling factor for the first and second dimensions, respectively. CodebookConfig ranges from 1 to 4 and defines four different ways in which the codebook is formed. For CodebookConfig = 1, a precoding matrix indicator (PMI) corresponding to a single 2D beam is fed back to the entire system bandwidth, while for CodebookConfig = {2, 3, 4}, the PMIs corresponding to four 2D beams are fed back and each sub-band can be associated with a different 2D beam. The CSI consists of a rank indicator (RI), a PMI, and a channel quality indicator (CQI) or CQIs, similar to the CSI report prior to Rel-13.
[0021] In the Class B CSI report, in one scenario (also referred to as “K_(csi-Rs)>1”), the eNB can pre-form multiple beams in one antenna dimension. There may be multiple gates (1, 2, 4, or 8 gates) in each beam in the other antenna dimension. The “formed beam” CSI-RSs Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, p. 20 / 131 / 64 are transmitted along each beam. A WD first selects the best beam from a configured beam group and then measures the CSI on the selected beam based on the LTE codebook prior to Edition-13 for 2, 4, or 8 ports. The WD then reports back the selected beam index and the CSI corresponding to the selected beam. In another scenario (also referred to as “K_(CSI-RS) = 1”), the eNB can form up to 4 beams (2D) in each polarization and the “formed beam” CSI-RS is transmitted along each beam. A WD measures the CSI on the “formed beam” CSI-RS and the feedback CSI based on a new Class B codebook for 2, 4, or 8 ports. Channel State Information Reference Symbols (CSI-RS)
[0022] In LTE and NR, a reference symbol sequence is inserted with the intention of estimating channel state information, the CSI-RS. The CSI-RS provides several advantages over basing CSI feedback on the common reference symbols (CRS) that were used for this purpose in previous editions of LTE. First, the CSI-RS is not used for data signal demodulation and thus does not require the same density of CRS (i.e., the overprocessing of CSI-RS is substantially less). Second, the CSI-RS provides a much more flexible means of configuring CSI feedback measurements (e.g., which CSI-RS feature to measure can be configured in a WD-specific manner).
[0023] By measuring a CSI-RS, a WD can estimate the effective channel that the CSI-RS is traversing, including the radio propagation channel and antenna gains. With more mathematical rigor, this implies that if a known CSI-RS signal X is transmitted, a WD can estimate the coupling between the transmitted signal and the received signal (i.e., the effective channel). Therefore, if no virtualization is performed in the transmission, the received signal can be expressed as: Petition 870250059249, 11 / 07 / 2025, p. 21 / 131 / 64 y = Hx + e, and the WD can estimate the effective channel H. Up to 32 CSIRS ports can be configured for a WD LTE or NR. That is, the WD can estimate the channel from up to thirty-two transmit antenna ports.
[0024] An antenna port is equivalent to a feature of the reference signal that the WD uses to measure the channel. Therefore, the base station, such as a gNB with two antennas, can define two CSI-RS ports, where each port is a set of feature elements in the temporal frequency grid in a subframe or interval. The base station transmits each of these two reference signals from each of the two antennas, so that the WD can measure the two radio channels and report the channel state information back to the base station based on these measurements. In LTE, CSI-RS features with 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, and 32 ports are supported.
[0025] In LTE, CSI-RS uses a length-two orthogonal coverage code (OCC) to overlay two antenna ports on two consecutive Feature Elements (REs). More specifically, Figures 5A-5C illustrate the feature element grids in a pair of feature blocks (RB) showing the potential positions for the specific WD RS from Edition 9 / 10, the CSI-RS (marked with a number corresponding to the CSI-RS antenna port), and CRS. As shown in Figures 5A-5C, many different CSI-RS patterns are available. For the case of 2 CSI-RS antenna ports, Figures 5A show that there are 20 different patterns in a subframe. As shown in Figures 5B and 5C, the corresponding number of patterns is 10 and 5 for 4 and 8 CSI-RS antenna ports, respectively. For TDD, some additional CSI-RS patterns are available.Furthermore, LTE supports additional OCC lengths of four and eight to support full power utilization in the case of the increased number of CSI-RS ports. The OCC length of 4 is... Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, p. 22 / 131 / 64 is supported when the number of CSI-RS ports is equal to or greater than 12. OCC length 8 is supported when the number of CSI-RS ports is 24 or 32.
[0026] The CSI reference signal settings are given by Table 1, taken from the 3GPP LTE TS 36.211 v.12.5.0 specifications. For example, the RS 5 CSI configuration for 4 antenna ports uses (k',l') = (9,5) in interval 1 (the second subframe interval) and, using the following formulas, it follows that ports 15, 16, use OCC on Feature Elements (k, l) = (9, 5), (9, 6) and ports 17, 18 use OCC on Feature Elements (3, 5) (3, 6), respectively, (considering the Physical Feature Block (PRB) index m = 0), where k is the subcarrier index and l is the OFDM symbol index. [0028] Two types of CSI-RS can be defined: CSI-RS with non-zero power (NZP) and CSI-RS with zero power (ZP). NZP CSI-RS is transmitted by a network node (or gNB) to the WDs to estimate channels in a downlink to the network node. Whereas, for ZP CSI-RS, one or more CSI-RS resource(s) is / are allocated by the network node, but nothing is transmitted on the resources, which can be used to reduce interference in neighboring cells, so that the best channel estimate can be performed by the WDs in neighboring cells.
[0029] In NR, the following three types of CSI-RS transmissions are supported: * Aperiodic CSI-RS Transmission: This is a one-opportunity CSI-RS transmission that can occur in any subframe or interval. Here, one opportunity means that the CSI-RS transmission occurs only once per trigger in an interval or subframe. CSI-RS resources (i.e., the resource element locations consisting of subcarrier locations and OFDM symbol locations) for CSI-RS Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, p. 25 / 131 / 64 aperiodic signals are preconfigured for WDs via upper-layer signaling. Aperiodic CSI-RS transmission is triggered by dynamic signaling.
[0030] * CSI-RS Periodical Transmission: These transmissions of CSI-RS are preconfigured by upper-layer signaling, and the preconfiguration includes parameters such as periodicity and subframe offset, similar to LTE. Periodic CSI-RS is controlled by upper-layer signaling only, and dynamic signaling is not required to trigger periodic CSI-RS transmission. That is, periodic CSI-RS transmission initiates following the Radio Resource Control (RRC) configuration, which follows the configured parameters.
[0031] * Semi-persistent CSI-RS transmission: Similar to periodic CSI-RS, resources for semi-persistent CSI-RS transmissions are preconfigured via upper-layer signaling with parameters such as periodicity and subframe offset. However, unlike periodic CSI-RS, dynamic allocation signaling is required to initiate semi-persistent CSI transmission on the preconfigured resources. Furthermore, as shown in Figure 6, semi-persistent CSI is transmitted for a limited duration (which can be referred to as the time duration during which the semi-persistent CSI-RS is allocated). In some cases, dynamic deallocation signaling is required to interrupt semi-persistent CSI transmission.
[0032] In addition to multiple CSI-RS transmission types, NR also supports multiple CSI report types. The following CSI report types will be supported in NR: * Aperiodic CSI report: This type of CSI report involves a one-time (i.e., once) CSI report by the WD that is dynamically triggered by the gNB. Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, p. 26 / 131 / 64
[0033] * Periodic CSI reporting: CSI is reported periodically by the WD. Parameters such as periodicity and subframe offset are configured by upper-layer signaling.
[0034] * Semi-persistent CSI report: similar to periodic CSI reports, semi-persistent CSI reports have a periodicity and a subframe shift. However, a dynamic trigger may be required to initiate semi-persistent CSI reporting. In some cases, a dynamic trigger may be required to interrupt semi-persistent CSI reporting.
[0035] With reference to the relationship of the different types of CSI-RS with the different types of CSI reporting, the combinations that will be supported in NR are shown in Table 2. TABLE 2 - Combinations of CSI-RS types and CSI report types supported by NR ____________________________________________ aperiodic CSI report periodic CSI report semi-persistent CSI-RS aperiodic supported unsupported unsupported CSI-RS semi-persistent supported supported unsupported CSI-RS periodic supported supported supported Interference Measurement Resources (IMRs)
[0036] In LTE, the Interference Measurement (IMR) feature was introduced in transmission mode 10, which gives the benefit that the CSI measurement is better defined, compared to other transmission modes (e.g., transmission mode 9) where interference measurements are undefined. This gives a performance improvement of transmission mode 10 over other transmission modes.
[0037] CSI-RS ZP-based IMR is already supported in LTE. CSI-RS ZP-based IMR is typically used for non-coherent interference measurement, where the WD measures the interference power in the IMR. Such CSI-RS ZP-based interference power measurements are useful in most cases, except those involving certain use cases such as MU-MIMO (i.e., data transmission to multiple WDs in the same unit). Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, page 27 / 131 / 64 same resource), coordinated multipoint (COMP) (i.e., data transmission to a WD from one or more coordinated transmitters), etc. In some cases, coherent interference measurement is useful when the WD measures the channel of the interferer. A potential use case is the accurate estimation of interference to suppress interference from dominant interferers. An IMR based on CSI-RS NZP is well suited for such coherent interference measurement. In NR, it is likely that two types of IMRs based on CSI-RS ZP and CSI-RS NZP will be supported.

Detailed Description
[0053] Before describing the exemplary modalities in detail, it is understood that the modalities reside primarily in the combinations of device components and processing steps related to dynamic indication for channel state information feedback (CSI). Therefore, the components have been represented, where appropriate, by conventional symbols in the drawings, showing only those specific details pertinent to understanding the modalities, so as not to obscure the description with details that will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art with the benefit of the description presented here. Here, the description also focuses on wireless transmissions in the downlink (DL), but the description and concepts provided here are equally applicable in the uplink (UL).
[0054] As used herein, relational terms such as “first” and “second”, “top” and “bottom”, and the like, may be used exclusively to distinguish one entity or element from another entity or element without necessarily requiring or implying any physical or logical relationship or order between such entities or elements. Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, p. 34 / 131 / 64 CSI Structure
[0055] The CSI structure agreed upon by NR allows for a wide variety of use cases, as well as the dynamic reuse of CSI resources. According to the agreed CSI structure, a WD can be configured by top layers with N > 1 CSI Report Definitions, M > 1 Resource Definitions, and 1 CSI Measurement Definition. The Measurement Definition includes L > 1 links, where each link connects a Report Definition with a Resource Definition. Figure 7 shows an example of the CSI structure agreed upon in NR, where N = 2, M = 4, and L = 5.
[0056] In each CSI Report Definition, a WD is configured (by higher layers) with parameters such as the reported CSI parameter(s), codebook configuration parameters (similar to those discussed in the section entitled 'Codebook-Based Channel State Information (CSI) Estimation and Feedback'), and the time-domain behavior (i.e., periodic, semi-persistent, or aperiodic) of the CSI report.
[0057] In each Resource Definition, a WD is configured (by higher layers) with a configuration of S > 1 CSI-RS Resource Sets. In each CSI-RS Resource Set s, the WD is additionally configured by higher layers with Ks > 1 CSI-RS resources, where the CSI-RS resources may have different mappings to the REs, different numbers of ports, and different time-domain behavior (i.e., periodic, semi-persistent, or aperiodic). An example of the Resource Definition with S = 2 CSI-RS Resource Sets is shown in Figure 8. In this example, the two CSI-RS Resource Sets consist of 4 CSI-RS resources each (i.e., Ki = 4 and K2 = 4). As seen in the example in Figure 8, the CSI-RS resources in each CSI-RS Resource Set have a mixed number of ports and time-domain behavior.
[0058] WD is then dynamically indicated with the following, if Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, page 35 / 131 / 64 applicable: * One or more CSI Reporting Definitions selected from the CSI Measurement Definition * One or more CSI-RS Feature Sets selected from at least one Feature Definition * One or more CSI-RS features selected from at least one CSI-RS feature set.
[0059] The different methods of dynamic indication are discussed below under the section entitled “Mechanisms for Control Signaling”. Mechanisms for Control Signaling
[0060] LTE control signaling can be conducted in a variety of ways, including conducting control information on the physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) or physical uplink control channel (PUCCH), embedded in the physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH), in the media access control (MAC) control elements (CEs MACs), or in the radio resource control (RRC) signaling. Each of these mechanisms is customized to conduct a particular type of control information.
[0061] Control information carried in PDCCH, PUCCH, or embedded in PUSCH is control information related to the physical layer, such as downlink control information (DCI), uplink control information (UCI), as described in 3GPP TS 36.211, 36.212, and 36.213. DCI is generally used to instruct the WD to perform some physical layer function, providing the necessary information to perform the function. UCI generally provides the network with necessary information, such as hybrid automatic repeat request acknowledgment (HARQ-ACK), scheduling request (SR), channel state information (CSI), including CQI, PMI, RI, and / or CRI. UCI and DCI can be transmitted on a subframe-by-subframe basis and then are Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, page 36 / 131 / 64 designed to support rapidly varying parameters, including those that may vary with a fading of the radio channel. Because the UCI and DCI can be transmitted in each subframe, the UCI or DCI corresponding to a given cell tends to be on the order of tens of bits, in order to limit the amount of control overprocessing.
[0062] Control information carried in MAC CEs is carried in MAC headers on shared uplink and downlink transport channels (UL-SCH and DL-SCH), as described in 3GPP TS 36.321. Since a MAC header does not have a fixed size, control information in MAC CEs can be sent when needed, and does not necessarily represent fixed overprocessing. Furthermore, MAC CEs can efficiently carry larger control payloads, as they are carried on UL-SCH or DL-SCH transport channels, which benefit from link adaptation, HARQ, and can undergo turbo coding. MAC CEs are used to perform repetitive tasks that use a fixed set of parameters, such as maintaining the synchronization advance state report or temporary storage, but these tasks generally do not require the transmission of a MAC CE on a subframe-by-subframe basis.Consequently, channel state information related to a radio channel fading, such as PMI, CQI, RI, and CRI, is not conducted on CE MACs in LTE up to Rel-14.
[0063] Consider a CSI structure with a Definition of Measurement consisting of N CSI Report Definitions, Resource Definitions with S CSI-RS Resource Sets, where each CSI-RS Resource Set consists of Ks CSI-RS resources. In this case, dynamic display to select one of the N CSI Report Definitions requires [log2(N)j bits. Dynamic display to select a CSI-RS Resource Set from among S CSI-RS Resource Sets requires [log2(S)j Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, page 37 / 131 / 64 bits. The dynamic indication to select one of the CSI-RS resources from Ks resources requires [log2(Ks)] bits. Therefore, the total number of bits required to select a CSI Report Definition, a CSIRS resource set, and a CSI-RS resource is [log2(N)j + [log2(S)j + [log2(Ks)] bits. This can amount to significant overprocessing of the control signaling for dynamic indication when the values of N, S, and Ks are large. The overprocessing of the control signaling for dynamic indication will be even greater when multiple CSI Report Definitions, multiple CSI-RS Resource Sets, and multiple CSI-RS resources need to be selected.
[0064] Furthermore, not all CSI-RS features are compatible with all CSI Report Definitions. For example, a 4-port CSI-RS feature is not compatible with a CSI report that has a codebook configuration that supports 8 ports (i.e., the number of ports must be the same in the CSI-RS feature and the codebook configuration for them to be compatible). Moreover, the timing behavior (i.e., periodic, semi-persistent, aperiodic) of the CSI Report Definition needs to be compatible with the timing behavior of the CSI-RS feature. It should be noted that it is agreed that only certain combinations of the timing behavior of the CSI-RS feature and the CSI report are supported in NR (see Table 2). Therefore, it is an open problem how to efficiently configure the Measurement Definition to minimize control signal overprocessing for dynamic indication.
[0065] Another problem with the existing approach is that the WD needs to be dynamically indicated upon, i.e., informed of, the selection of three different entities (the three entities are CSI Report Definition, CSI-RS Resource Set, and CSI-RS Resources). This can make the design of the signaling for dynamic indication complicated. Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, page 38 / 131 / 64
[0066] In a first embodiment (Mode A, below), the control signaling required for dynamic indication is minimized by forming a one-to-one correspondence between a CSI Report Definition and a CSI-RS Resource Set contained in a Resource Definition to which the CSI Report is linked.
[0067] In a second embodiment (Effect B below), Report Subsets are created in each CSI Report Definition. The control signaling required for dynamic indication is minimized by forming a one-to-one correspondence between a Report Subset contained in a CSI Report Definition and a CSI-RS Resource Set contained in a Resource Definition to which the CSI Report is linked.
[0068] The advantages of the first approach may include simplified dynamic indication and minimized associated control signaling overprocessing. Due to the one-to-one correspondence between a CSI Report Definition and a CSIRS Resource Set, the selection of the CSI-RS Resource Set can be implicitly inferred from the dynamic indication of the CSI Report Definition. Therefore, only two different entities need to be dynamically indicated (the two entities are the CSI Report Definition and the CSI-RS resources). In terms of minimizing control signaling overprocessing, the total number of bits required to select a CSI Report Definition, a CSI-RS Resource Set, and a CSI-RS resource is flog2(N)] + flog2(Ks)] bits, where N is the number of CSI Report Definitions and Ks is the number of CSI-RS resources in the CSI-RS Resource Set Ks.Therefore, the number of bits for dynamic indication is reduced to flog2(S)] bits.
[0069] The advantages of the second mode may include that the associated control signaling overprocessing is minimized. Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, p. 39 / 131 / 64 Due to the one-to-one correspondence between a Report Subset and a CSI-RS Feature Set, the selection of the Report Subset can be implicitly inferred from the dynamic indication of the CSI-RS Feature Set and the dynamic indication of the CSI Report Definition. Since multiple Report Subsets are contained within a single CSI Report Definition, the number of bits required to dynamically indicate the CSI Report Definition can be minimized.

[0077] Additionally, the term base station, for example, a Radio Base Station (RBS), may sometimes be referred to here, for example, as an evolved NodeB “eNB”, “eNodeB”, “NodeB”, “node B”, “gNB”, “gNodeB” or BTS (Base Transceiver Station), depending on the technology and terminology used. Base stations 20 can be of different classes, such as, for example, macro eNodeB, domestic eNodeB or pico base station, based on transmission power and thus also on cell size.A cell is the geographic area in which radio coverage is provided by base station 20 at a base station location. [0084] Figure 14 is a flowchart of an exemplary process for use in a base station 20 that uses control signaling for the dynamic indication of channel state information (CSI) resources to a wireless device 40. In a first case, a one-to-one correspondence between a CSI report definition and a CSI-RS resource set is established so that the CSI-RS resource set can be determined in the wireless device 40 from an indication of the CSI report definition (block S100). In some embodiments, an indication of the CSI report definition and the CSI-RS resources is sent to the wireless device 40 via transmitter 34 (block S102).
[0085] Figure 15 is a flowchart of an exemplary process in a wireless device 40 for determining a CSI-RS feature set indicated by a base station. The process includes determining, by means of the determiner 50, a CSI-RS feature set that is determined based on an indication of a CSI report definition, the CSI report definition having a one-to-one correspondence with respect to a CSI-RS feature set (block S104). In some embodiments, an indication of the CSI report definition and the CSI-RS features are received by means of the receiver 52 (block S110).
[0086] Figure 16 is a flowchart of an exemplary process for signaling the CRS-RS resources that will be used by a wireless device 40. The process includes selecting, via the processing circuit system 22, one or more sets of CSI-RS resources (block S108). The process also includes selecting, via the processing circuit system 22, one or more CSI-RS resources in each of the selected sets of CSI-RS resources (block S110). The process also includes selecting, via the processing circuit system 22, the maximum number of CSI-RS resources in a set of CSI-RS resources, a Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, page 47 / 131 / 64 selection of the maximum number calculated to achieve similarity between the CSI-RS feature numbers in one or more CSIRS feature sets (block S112).
[0087] Figure 17 is a flowchart of an exemplary process that is provided to initiate CSI feedback on a wireless device 40 configured by upper layers with a CSI Report containing the parameters related to the CSI report. [0088] Figure 18 is a flowchart of an exemplary process that is provided to initiate channel state information feedback, CSI, in a wireless device 40 configured by upper layers with at least one of M Report Definitions containing the parameters related to CSI reporting and N Resource Definitions containing the parameters that define the resources used for channel measurement and their properties. [0089] Figure 19 is a flowchart of an exemplary process that is provided in a wireless device 40 for determining a set of features of the Channel State Information Reference Symbol, CSI-RS, indicated by a base station 20. The process involves determining a set of CSI-RS features based on an indication of a CSI report (or CSI Report configuration), the CSI report (or CSI Report configuration) having a one-to-one correspondence with respect to the CSI-RS feature set (block S118). According to this aspect, in some embodiments, the CSI-RS feature set includes the features used for channel measurement. Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, p. 48 / 131 / 64
[0090] In some modes, the matches referred to here are configured in RRC. Furthermore, in some modes, by dynamically triggering a CSI report, the CSI resources are automatically triggered, given the configured match(es). Mode A
[0091] In Mode A, each Resource Definition in a WD is configured in such a way that the CSI-RS resource sets in the Resource Definition contain CSI-RS resources with the same configuration parameters (e.g., the same number of ports and the same time-domain behavior, i.e., periodic, semi-persistent, aperiodic CSI-RS resources). Figure 20 shows an example of this mode where Resource Definition 0 contains S = 3 different CSI-RS resource sets. Each of the three CSI-RS resource sets has CSI-RS resources with the same configuration parameters. For example, CSI-RS Resource Set 0 contains 2 CSI-RS resources, both with 4 ports and aperiodic time-domain behavior, CSI-RS Resource Set 1 contains 2 CSI-RS resources, both with 8 ports and semi-persistent time-domain behavior, etc.
[0092] Furthermore, in Mode A, a Resource Definition containing S different CSI-RS resource sets is linked to S CSI Report Definitions, where the s-th CSI Report Definition corresponds to the s-th CSI-RS Resource Set in the Resource Definition. The CSI Report Definition - CSI-RS Resource Set pair that corresponds to each other has compatible parameter settings. In the example in Figure 20, CSI-RS Report Definition 2 with a 32-port codebook configuration corresponds to CSI-RS Resource Set 2 containing the 32-port CSI-RS resources. Furthermore, CSI-RS Report Definition 2 is aperiodic and the Resource Set Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, p. 49 / 131 / 64 The CSI-RS 2 resource also contains the aperiodic CSI-RS resources. Therefore, the CSI-RS 2 Report Definition is compatible with the CSI-RS 2 Resource Set in terms of both the number of ports and the time-domain behavior. Even though this example illustrates compatibility in terms of the number of ports and time-domain behavior, the notion of compatibility between a CSI-RS report definition and the CSI-RS Resource Set in Mode A can also be easily extended in terms of other parameters.
[0093] The advantages of Mode A may include simplified dynamic indication and minimized associated control signaling overprocessing. Due to the one-to-one correspondence between a CSI Report Definition and a CSI-RS Resource Set, the selection of the CSI-RS Resource Set can be implicitly inferred from the dynamic indication of the CSI Report Definition. Therefore, only two different entities need to be dynamically indicated (the two entities are CSI Report Definition and CSI-RS resources). In terms of minimizing control signaling overprocessing, the total number of bits required for selection in the CSI Report Definition, a CSI-RS Resource Set, and a CSI-RS resource is [log2(N)j + [log2(Ks)] bits, where N is the number of CSI Report Definitions and Ks is the number of CSI-RS resources in the CSI-RS Resource Set Ks.Therefore, the number of bits for dynamic indication is reduced by [log2(S)j bits.
[0094] In some modes, DCI signaling is used for dynamic indication. In some other modes, CE MAC is used for dynamic signaling.
[0095] Optionally, in a variant of Mode A, CSI-RS resources in the same CSI-RS Resource Set may have the same configuration for only a subset of the parameters. In the example in Figure 21, the CSI Report Definition 1 with a configuration Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, p. 50 / 131 / 64 of the 8-port codebook corresponds to CSIRS Resource Set 1, which contains the 8-port CSI-RS resources. However, the time-domain behavior of the two resources in CSI-RS Resource Set 1 is different (i.e., one CSI-RS resource is aperiodic, while the other is semi-persistent). Although the two CSI-RS resources in CSI-RS Resource Set 1 have different time-domain behavior, they are both compatible with the time-domain behavior of the CSI Reporting Definition 1 (recall Table 2 where both aperiodic and semi-persistent CSI-RS are compatible with the Aperiodic CSI Reporting Definition). In this case, which type of CSI-RS feature to use (i.e., Aperiodic or Semi-persistent) can be determined by dynamic indication. Mode B
[0096] In Mode B, a Resource Definition containing S different CSI-RS resource sets is linked to a CSI Report Definition. The CSI Report Definition linked to the Resource Definition contains S different Report subsets. The s-th Report Subset in the CSI Report Definition corresponds to the s-th CSI-RS Resource Set in the Resource Definition. In the example in Figure 22, Report Subset 2 with a codebook configuration of 32 ports corresponds to CSI-RS Resource Set 2 which contains the 32-port CSI-RS resources. Furthermore, Report Subset 2 is aperiodic and CSI-RS Resource Set 2 also contains the aperiodic CSI-RS resources. Therefore, Report Subset 2 is compatible with CSI-RS Resource Set 2 in terms of both the number of ports and the time-domain behavior.Even though this example illustrates compatibility in terms of the number of ports and behavior in the time domain, the notion of compatibility between a Report Subset and a CSI-RS Feature Set in the Modality. Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, p. 51 / 131 / 64 B can also be easily extended in terms of other parameters.
[0097] One advantage of Mode B may be that this mode minimizes the associated control signaling overprocessing. Due to the one-to-one correspondence between a Report Subset and a CSI-RS Resource Set, the selection of the Report Subset can be implicitly inferred from the dynamic indication of the CSI-RS Resource Set and the dynamic indication of the CSI Report Definition. Since multiple Report Subsets are contained within a single CSI Report Definition, the number of bits required to dynamically indicate the CSI Report Definition can be minimized, compared to a case where four entities (CSI Report Definition, Report Subsets, CSI-RS Resource Set, and CSI-RS resources) are all dynamically indicated explicitly.
[0098] In some modes, DCI signaling is used for dynamic indication. In some other modes, CE MAC is used for dynamic signaling. Mode C
[0099] Note that multiple CSI-RS resource sets can be configured for a wireless device 40, and for each CSI-RS resource set, there can be multiple CSI-RS resources. In Mode C, one or more CSI-RS resource(s) is / are selected, first by selecting a CSI-RS resource set and then by selecting one or more CSI-RS resources in the selected set. Since the number of bits required for resource selection needs to be drawn according to the number of CSI-RS resource sets and the maximum number of CSI-RS resources in a set, for efficient dynamic signaling / indication, the number of CSI-RS resources in each of the CSI-RS resource sets should be as similar as possible. For example, if there are four CSI-RS resource sets, the first set has 16 CSI resources. Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, page 52 / 131 / 64 Since the other three CSI-RS feature sets have 4 features each (i.e., a total of 28 features), a total of 6 bits is required to select a CSI-RS feature; that is, 2 bits for selecting the CSI-RS feature set and 4 bits for selecting the CSI-RS feature within the selected set. On the other hand, if the 28 CSI-RS features are in two CSI-RS feature sets, each with 14 CSI-RS features, then only 5 bits will be needed.
[00100] In another embodiment, each CSIRS resource set can contain CSI-RS resources with a different number of antenna ports, and with different time domain behavior, i.e., they can be periodic or aperiodic CSI-RS resources. Multiple CSI Report Definitions can be dynamically associated with a CSI-RS resource set and one or more CSI-RS resources in the selected CSI-RS resource set. An example is shown in TABLE 3, where three CSI-RS resource sets are configured for a wireless device 40. In the first set, the UE is configured with six 8-port CSI-RS resources and one 32-port CSI-RS resource, and the CSI-RS resources have different time domain behavior. This can be used to support hybrid CSI reporting, where periodic CSI is reported using 32-port CSI-RS resource #5.Aperiodic CSI reporting can also be done for 32 ports using feature #5. Aperiodic CSI reporting for 8 ports can use any of the four 8-port CSI-RS features, that is, features #0 to #3 in the dynamically selected CSI-RS feature set #0, or use the 8-port semi-persistent CSI-RS feature set #4. CSI-RS feature sets #1 and #2 can be used to perform CSI reporting from other TRPs in a CoMP broadcast scheme.
[00101] In some cases, CSI-RS features in a full CSI-RS feature set may be selected to report the best Petition 870250059249, dated 11 / 07 / 2025, p. 53 / 131 / 64 CSI is defined as either the best received CSI values (RSRPs) among all CSI values measured across all CSI-RS features or the best received Ω reference signal powers (RSRPs). Here, each RSRP corresponds to one of the CSI-RS features in the selected CSI-RS feature set.
[00102] The number of CSI-RS feature sets, as well as the maximum number of CSI-RS features in each CSI-RS feature set, can be semi-statically configured so that the number of bits used in the dynamic indication for CSI-RS feature selection can be minimized according to each implementation scenario.
