Description

1 / 34 METHOD FOR CONTROLLING RESISTANT WEEDS FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001] The present invention relates to a method for controlling herbicide-resistant weeds. More particularly, the present invention relates to a method for controlling herbicide-resistant weeds in fallow fields by applying a herbicide composition. More particularly, the present invention also relates to a herbicide composition comprising a carbamate herbicide and at least one agrochemically acceptable excipient thereof. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0002] Herbicides are agrochemicals used to control the growth of unwanted plants / weeds, which can be detrimental to crop growth, health, and yield. Herbicides are not only used to control weed infestation in crops on agricultural land, but are also used for weed management in fallow land. During the fallow period, that is, the period after harvesting or the period before sowing crops, arable land is kept uncultivated for one or more growing cycles to help the soil rejuvenate and recover its nutrient level.

[0003] Because weed growth can hinder the purpose of the fallow period, different mechanical or chemical methods are used to get rid of growing weeds. A known method of chemical fallow is effective if: (1) after herbicide application, the herbicide remains active in the soil to control weed species for a sufficient period of time and (2) by the time the seeded species germinate, the herbicide has decomposed or leached, or both, and toxicity to perennial seedlings is minimized. The chemical fallow method is one of the preferred methods because it is cheaper and more effective, as well as employing herbicides for weed control. A desirable herbicide should control a broad spectrum of weeds and dissipate rapidly after weed control is achieved. However, repeated use of a single herbicide or of Petition 870260069238, dated 07 / 13 / 2026, page 10 / 43 2 / 34 A group of herbicides with the same mechanism of action results in the development of herbicide-resistant weeds.

[0004] Beyond that, the persistence of herbicides in agricultural lands is also a concern due to their residual action in the soil and, subsequently, in water bodies. Furthermore, the application of the same / old herbicides can, in certain cases, also lead to phytotoxicity, causing adverse reactions in cultivated plants that can affect the plant's physiology and metabolism and also render it unsuitable for human consumption. Consequently, there is a need in the art to develop newer methods to provide control of herbicide-resistant weeds during various stages of the crop, as well as for chemical fallow applications. In addition, there has been a continuous emphasis on the development of newer, better, and more efficient herbicide compositions and formulations to overcome the problems mentioned above.

[0005] Asulam, also known as methyl A-(4-aminophenyl)sulfonylcarbamate, is a broad-spectrum carbamate herbicide. Asulam is a plant growth inhibitor that inhibits folate synthesis by suppressing dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS) in plants. The structure of asulam is represented as:

[0006] Asulam is especially useful for post-emergence control of perennial grasses in crops such as sugarcane, soybeans, cotton, etc. It provides effective control for a wide variety of herbicide-resistant and tolerant weeds, while reducing phytotoxicity in crops.

[0007] In addition, asulam is known in the art to be used as an aqueous solution, for example, in the form of soluble concentrates (SL). A Petition 870260069238, dated 07 / 13 / 2026, page 11 / 43 3 / 34 A known disadvantage of the aqueous formulation (or formulations) of asulam is the high application rate required in the areas to be treated. Another known disadvantage is herbicide resistance. It is well known in the art that, over time, many herbicides gradually lose their effectiveness because weeds can develop resistance, i.e., a significant decrease in sensitivity to a weed, thus reducing the field performance of these herbicides. Therefore, it is a current need to develop new herbicides to maintain weed control. It is also known that the development of herbicide resistance is influenced by complex interactions of factors such as the herbicide's mode of action (how the active ingredient inhibits the weed), the herbicide use pattern, and the cropping system. If herbicides with the same mode of action are applied continuously, even higher rates or more frequent applications will not provide good control in the end. At that point, the weed population becomes dominated by weed types that are not susceptible to herbicides of that chemical class or mode of action. This is one of the problems faced by aqueous formulations of asulam.

[0008] Therefore, there is a need to develop a robust asulam formulation, especially in the form of a solid formulation, that remains stable throughout its shelf life and resists degradation when diluted with water for application to unwanted plants / weeds or for chemical fallow applications. OBJECTIVES OF THE INVENTION

[0009] It is a primary object of the present invention to provide a method for controlling herbicide-resistant and herbicide-tolerant weeds in a fallow field.

[0010] It is an object of the present invention to provide a method for controlling herbicide-resistant and herbicide-tolerant weeds by applying chemical fallow.

[0011] It is yet another object of the present invention to provide a method for efficiently controlling, suppressing and eradicating herbicide-resistant and herbicide-tolerant weeds by applying chemical fallow of a herbicide at low application rates.

[0012] Another object of the present invention is to provide a granular herbicidal composition comprising asulam and at least one agrochemical excipient. Petition 870260069238, dated 07 / 13 / 2026, page 12 / 43 4 / 34 acceptable of the same, exhibiting enhanced stability, suspension capacity, and dispersion capacity. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
