Description
16 WELL DOWN TOOL, WELL SYSTEM, AND METHOD CROSS-REFERENCE ON RELATED REQUEST
[001] This application claims priority over Application No. U.S. 18 / 618,577, filed March 27, 2024, entitled “DOWNHOLE TOOL INCLUDING A LOWER COMPLETION COUPLED WITH A REMOTE MONITORING AND CONTROL MODULE”, which claims the benefit of Provisional Application Serial No. U.S. 63 / 494,083, filed April 4, 2023, entitled “INTELLIGENT COMPLETION DEPLOYMENT AND INSTALLATION WITH WELL TEST USING TELEMETRY AND INTELLIGENT WELL VALVES FOR EFFICIENCY IN OPERATIONS AND TEMPORARY WELL SUSPENSION”, both of which are commonly assigned to this application and incorporated herein by reference in their entirety. BACKGROUND
[002] One of the main challenges for operators, especially in a subsea environment, is managing rig utilization to allow for drilling, completion, and testing of a well, while still meeting rig availability schedules, subsea production system construction, power cable laying, etc. In a well testing scenario, typically, a well will be drilled, bottom and top completions will be performed or a dedicated well test string will be run, and then the well will be tested to determine relevant reservoir parameters and performance before handing the well over to production teams. BRIEF DESCRIPTION
[003] Reference is now made to the following descriptions taken together with the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 illustrates a well system that is designed, manufactured and Petition 870250075967, dated 08 / 27 / 2025, page 10 / 42 / 16 operated in accordance with one or more disclosure methods; and Figures 2 to 5 illustrate a well system designed, manufactured, and operated according to one or more disclosure modalities at various different stages of completion. DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[004] In the following drawings and descriptions, similar parts are typically marked throughout the descriptive report and in the drawings with the same reference numerals, respectively. The figures drawn are not necessarily to scale. Certain features of the disclosure may be shown exaggerated to scale or in some schematic way, and some details of certain elements may not be shown in the interest of clarity and conciseness. The present disclosure may be implemented in different forms.
[005] Specific modalities are described in detail and shown in the drawings, with the understanding that the present disclosure shall be considered an exemplification of the principles of disclosure and is not intended to limit disclosure to that illustrated and described in this document. It shall be fully acknowledged that the different teachings of the modalities discussed in this document may be employed separately or in any suitable combination to produce desired results.
[006] Unless otherwise specified, the use of the terms “connect”, “engage”, “coupling”, “attach” or any other similar term describing an interaction between elements is not intended to limit the interaction to direct interaction between the elements, and may also include indirect interaction between the elements described.
[007] Unless otherwise specified, the use of the terms “above”, “upper”, “upward”, “above the borehole”, “upstream” or other similar terms should be interpreted as generally referring away from the lower terminal end of a well, regardless of orientation. Petition 870250075967, dated 08 / 27 / 2025, page 11 / 42 / 16 of the wellbore; similarly, the use of the terms “below”, “lower”, “down”, “bottom of the well”, “downstream” or other similar terms should be interpreted as generally referring to the lower terminal end of a well, regardless of the orientation of the wellbore. The use of any one or more of the foregoing terms shall not be interpreted as denoting positions along a perfectly vertical axis. Unless otherwise specified, the use of the expression “subterranean formation” should be interpreted as encompassing both exposed belowground areas and belowground areas covered by water, such as ocean or freshwater.
[008] The purpose of this disclosure is to offer operators the flexibility to deploy and install the lower section of a smart completion (e.g., bottom completion) and then, on the same trip, perform a well test using smart completion interval control valves (ICVs) or lubrication valves (LVs) before performing the top completion and / or running a dedicated well test sequence. This provides the ability to test the well, isolate the bottom completion using the ICVs, and then disconnect from the bottom completion, allowing for temporary well suspension, thus enabling efficient use of the rig during a failed campaign.
[009] This disclosure offers a downhole tool comprising three components (e.g., three primary components). The first component is a bottom completion (e.g., a smart bottom completion). The second component is an electrical and / or hydraulic and / or fiber optic wet connection tool coupled to the bottom completion. The third component is a monitoring and control module (e.g., an acoustically activated remote monitoring and control module) coupled to the bottom completion (e.g., by Petition 870250075967, dated 08 / 27 / 2025, page 12 / 42 / 16 (through the wet connection assembly), which can operate the bottom completion without the need for control lines returning to the surface.
[0010] The above components offer the capability for the downhole tool, including a bottom completion of a smart well system, to be run downhole on a downhole carrier (e.g., on the drill pipe) as a complete system, including packers, downhole sensors, fiber, and interval control valves (ICVs). Once at depth, a signal (e.g., acoustic signal) can be sent to the downhole tool (e.g., the remote monitoring and control module) to verify the integrity of the downhole tool and determine if any control lines were damaged during the downhole tool's operation to depth. After the downhole tool is verified, the packers can be adjusted and the ICVs operated sequentially to initiate well cleaning and testing.Through the remote monitoring and control module, the ICVs can be remotely activated (e.g., manipulated) from the surface, and pressures and temperatures can be monitored from each downhole sensor, with the resulting data acoustically transmitted back to the surface. When the well test is complete, the ICVs can be commanded to shut down, isolating the reservoir. The downhole carrier, the remote monitoring and control module, and the wet half-connection top connection assembly can be retrieved back to the surface, leaving the wet half-connection bottom connection assembly and the bottom completion in the well. At this point, the operator has the option to perform the top completion and reconnect to the bottom completion (e.g., smart bottom completion) or temporarily suspend the well (e.g., to allow for efficient field development, among other reasons).
[0011] One of the main technical improvements of a tool Petition 870250075967, dated 08 / 27 / 2025, page 13 / 42 / 16. The wellbore and wellbore system according to this disclosure is the ability to perform bottom completion (e.g., intelligent bottom completion) without control lines and, through the use of the remote monitoring and control module and wet connection technology, monitor and control the bottom completion. This enhancement offers the operator the ability to perform a well test much earlier than is normally done today, or to suspend the well without the need to perform top completion. To date, this integrated solution has not been implemented in this type of configuration and, specifically, has not been used for purposes of early well testing or temporary suspension.
[0012] The above solution can allow the operator to perform a well test much earlier than is normally done today, as well as reduce the number of trips to the well to perform this function. This feature also provides instant feedback on reservoir conditions at a time well before the well construction process. This allows the operator to have better insights before proceeding, being able to decide not to perform the top completion and / or possibly the tree system, and move on to performing a stimulation treatment or even a sidetrack or abandonment of the well, which can provide the ability to reduce overall CAPEX expenditure.Furthermore, this solution provides the operator with significantly greater flexibility in field development, allowing for the temporary suspension of a well without the need to perform top completion and / or tree system installation until a later time that meets the rig and construction schedule. There are also benefits to performing a reservoir return flow / cleanup before suspending a well for extended periods. For many completions, this type of offering enables a revolutionary method of using advanced completion products in a way that provides significant customer value in reducing equipment downtime. Petition 870250075967, dated 08 / 27 / 2025, page 14 / 42 / 16 ability to understand more quickly whether a well is not a viable option, as well as the flexibility to offer additional opportunities to manage a complex field development schedule.
[0013] Although the present disclosure may include many different steps for the execution of a well system that includes a downhole tool, in at least one embodiment, the steps for the execution of the well system that includes the downhole tool may include: 1) The bottom completion (e.g., the bottom section of the smart bottom completion) of the downhole tool would be mounted on the platform floor, which involves terminating the electrical and / or hydraulic and / or fiber optic control lines of the bottom completion in a half-wet connection bottom assembly; 2) The remote monitoring and control module of the downhole tool would consist of a half-wet connection top assembly, which involves terminating the electrical and / or hydraulic and / or fiber optic control lines of the remote monitoring and control module in a half-wet connection bottom assembly;3) Downhole transportation (e.g., drill pipe, service string, or appropriate tubing) would be carried out above the remote monitoring and control module; 4) The bottom completion, the remote monitoring and control module, and the downhole transportation would be coupled together, for example, using the wet half-connection bottom connection assembly coupled to the bottom completion and the wet half-connection top connection assembly coupled to the remote monitoring and control module; 5) The downhole tool would be run on the downhole transportation (e.g., drill pipe, service string, or appropriate tubing) to the predefined set depth; 6) Once at depth, a signal (e.g., generated by means of a signal generator, such as a wireless acoustic module connected to the downhole transportation) would be sent to the bottom completion. Petition 870250075967, dated 08 / 27 / 2025, page 15 / 42 / 16 surface) would be sent via downhole transport to the remote monitoring and control module at depth, allowing the integrity of the downhole completion control lines to be verified hydraulically and / or electrically and / or optically; 7) The downhole completion ICVs can be closed by command, if necessary; 8) The downhole completion production packer can then be adjusted from the surface (e.g., acoustically, hydraulically, etc., adjusted from the surface) and, in addition, downhole sensor data can be monitored to ensure the integrity of the packer adjustment;9) The lower completion ICVs can then be commanded to open and / or close in any order after the packer test, allowing a well cleaning and / or testing program to be executed, for example, while having real-time access to bottomhole conditions via permanent bottomhole sensors and also information on the ICV positions; 10) After completion of the well testing program, the ICVs can be closed by command to isolate the reservoir; 11) The downhole transport, the remote control and monitoring module, and the upper wet half-connection assembly can be disconnected from the lower wet half-connection assembly and the lower completion and recovered to the surface;and 12) The operator may decide to perform the top completion at the bottom of the well and engage with the bottom completion, proceed to stimulation and / or intervention, or alternatively, temporarily suspend completion.
[0014] In at least one embodiment, the remote monitoring and control module can be used to operate any electrically, optically, or hydraulically connected device.
[0015] In at least one other way, the proposed solution provides a radical change in the way wells are currently completed and tested. The use of a well system in the manner proposed Petition 870250075967, dated 08 / 27 / 2025, page 16 / 42 / 16 allows companies to offer a differentiated service and product that was not available until now. Furthermore, subsea development projects are expensive, and therefore, having the ability to know earlier if a well is not performing as expected or having the flexibility to suspend a well without the need to perform top completion or tree system installation is a significant benefit for operators.
[0016] In at least one other embodiment, the remote monitoring and control module is an integrity checker, which can be obtained and purchased from Halliburton.
[0017] Figure 1 illustrates a well system 100 designed, manufactured and / or operated in accordance with one or more embodiments of the disclosure. The well system 100 includes a platform 120 positioned on an underground formation 110 located below the Earth's surface 115. The platform 120, in at least one embodiment, has a lifting device 125 and a tower 130 for raising and lowering a downhole transport 140, such as a drill string, casing string, tubing string, spiral tubing, through tool, etc. Although an onshore oil and gas platform 120 is illustrated in Figure 1, the scope of this disclosure is not thereby limited and could potentially apply to offshore applications. The teachings of this disclosure can also be applied to other onshore multilateral wells different from those illustrated.
[0018] The well system 100, in one or more embodiments, additionally includes a main wellbore 150. The main wellbore 150, in the embodiment illustrated, includes piping 160, 165, which may have different tubular diameters. Extending from the main wellbore 150, in one or more embodiments, there may be one or more lateral wellbores 170. In addition, a plurality of multilateral junctions 175 may be Petition 870250075967, dated 08 / 27 / 2025, page 17 / 42 / 16 positioned at the junctions between the main wellbore 150 and the side wellbores 170. The multi-side junctions 175 may be designed, manufactured and operated in accordance with one or more embodiments of the disclosure. The wellbore system 100 may additionally include one or more ICVs 180 positioned at various locations within the main wellbore 150 and / or one or more side wellbores 170. The wellbore system 100 may additionally include a control unit 190. [0019] Figures 2 to 5 illustrate a well system 200 designed, manufactured, and operated according to one or more alternative embodiments of the disclosure at various different stages of completion. The well system 200 may include a platform (not shown) positioned over a subsurface formation 210 located below the Earth's surface. The platform, in at least one embodiment, has a lifting apparatus and a tower for raising and lowering a downhole transport 220, such as a work string, a service string, a casing string, a tubing string, a spiral tubing, a run tool, etc. Although an onshore well system 200 is contemplated in Figure 2, the scope of this disclosure is not limited thereto and could therefore potentially apply to offshore applications. The teachings of this disclosure may also be applied to other onshore wells different from those illustrated.
[0020] The well system 200, in one or more embodiments, additionally includes a wellbore 230 formed by the underground formation 210. The well 230, in the illustration, may include a bottom completion 240 (e.g., smart bottom completion). The bottom completion 240, according to one embodiment, may include one or more flow control devices 250 (e.g., interval control valves or Petition 870250075967, dated 08 / 27 / 2025, page 18 / 42 / 16 ICVs) and / or one or more downhole sensors 255 (e.g., downhole gauges). In the embodiment illustrated, the one or more flow control devices 250 and / or one or more downhole sensors 255 are not physically coupled to the surface (e.g., by means of control lines), but can be accessed wirelessly (e.g., acoustically), as will be discussed in more detail below. The bottom completion 240, in one or more additional embodiments, may additionally include one or more packers (e.g., an upflow packer 260 and / or a downhole packer 265). The bottom completion 240, in at least one embodiment, may additionally include a wet connection bottom connection assembly 270.
[0021] The bottom completion 240, in the model illustrated in Figure 2, covers a single zone of interest. In other embodiments, the bottom completion 240 may encompass several zones of interest and therefore may include several zones, each of which includes its own downhole packer 265, one or more flow control devices 250 and one or more downhole sensors 255.
[0022] According to one embodiment of the disclosure, a remote monitoring and control module 280 may be positioned above the bottom completion borehole 240. For example, the remote monitoring and control module 280 may be placed between the downhole carrier 220 and a wet half-connection top connection assembly 285 configured to couple to the wet half-connection bottom connection assembly 270. In the illustration, the wet half-connection bottom connection assembly 270 and the wet half-connection top connection assembly 285 couple to each other to form a wet connection assembly 290.
[0023] In at least one embodiment, the remote monitoring and control module 280 is configured to perform well tests of the well 230 before performing a top completion within the well 230. By Petition 870250075967, dated 08 / 27 / 2025, page 19 / 42 / 16, for example, the remote monitoring and control module 280, in at least one embodiment, is an acoustic / pulse telemetry device with monitoring and control capability for the lower completion 240 (e.g., part of the intelligent well of the lower completion 240) by means of the wet connection lower connection assembly 270 and the wet connection upper connection assembly 285. In at least one embodiment, the remote monitoring and control module 280 may be obtained from Halliburton, Inc. under the trade name Integrity Checker®.
[0024] Figure 2 further illustrates that the downhole device 295, which may include the bottom completion 240 (e.g., the smart well portion of the bottom completion 240), the wet half-connection bottom connection assembly 270, the wet half-connection top connection assembly 285, and the remote control and monitoring module 280, runs on the downhole carrier 220. Once at depth, one or more control lines of the bottom completion 240 can be checked using the remote control and monitoring module 280. If one or more control lines are checked, the over-the-well pass-through packer 260 and / or the downhole packer 265 can be adjusted, and the individual zonal flow control devices 250 can be remotely opened by means of a signal (e.g., telemetry signal, such as an acoustic signal) sent from the surface via the downhole carrier 220.The signal sent from the surface can be converted into an electrical, hydraulic, or fiber conduit by means of the 270 semi-wet connection bottom assembly and the 285 semi-wet connection top assembly (e.g., fully wet connection assembly 290). This will allow monitoring and control of the 240 bottom completion, enabling remote well cleaning and 200 well system testing without the need to operate the top completion and pipe support. Petition 870250075967, dated 08 / 27 / 2025, page 20 / 42 / 16
[0025] In at least one embodiment, the downhole device 295 includes one or more actuators to actuate one or more devices within the downhole completion 240. For example, in at least one embodiment, the one or more actuators (e.g., flow control devices 250, downhole sensors 255, etc.) are one or more electric actuators, one or more hydroelectric actuators, one or more hydraulic actuators, or a combination thereof. The one or more actuators, in at least one embodiment, are located in the remote control and monitoring module 280 of the downhole tool 295. In another embodiment, the one or more actuators are located in the downhole completion 240 of the downhole tool 295, or in both, in the downhole completion 240 and in the remote control and monitoring module 280 of the downhole tool 295.
[0026] Figure 3 illustrates that, once well cleaning and / or zone flow testing are complete, the flow control devices 250 can be shut off, isolating the reservoir. The downhole carrier 220, the remote control and monitoring module 280, and the wet half-connection top link assembly 285 of the downhole device 295 can then be recovered to the surface. The operator, for example, based on reservoir performance, may decide to perform top completion immediately or temporarily suspend the well for a period of time.
[0027] Figure 4 illustrates that, when the operator is ready, the top completion 410 can be performed on well 230, with another wet connection top assembly 485 coupled to a lower end of the well. The top completion may include additional features such as safety valves, chemical injection equipment, gas lift equipment, etc. As discussed above, in at least one embodiment, this is done with the reservoir. Petition 870250075967, dated 08 / 27 / 2025, page 21 / 42 / 16 additionally being isolated by the lower completion 240.
[0028] Figure 5 illustrates that when the upper completion 410 is nearing depth, the upper half-wet connection assembly 485 is reconnected to the lower half-wet connection assembly 270. Additionally, a displacement joint may allow for further downward displacement to permit the landing of a pipe support. The upper half-wet connection assembly 485 is now connected to the lower half-wet connection assembly 270, providing electrical, hydraulic, and / or fiber optic connectivity and surface communication via control lines, wired pipe conduits, and / or wireless telemetry. In the illustration, the lower half-wet connection assembly 270 and the upper half-wet connection assembly 485 couple together to form a complete wet connection assembly 590.
