Description
1 / 44 SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR GENERATING AND IMPLEMENTING VIDEOGAME CONTROL COMPOSITIONS ON SECONDARY SCREEN DEVICES CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0001] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Patent Application No. 18 / 193,620, filed March 30, 2023, which is incorporated by reference herein in its entirety. BACKGROUND
[0002] Video games remain a popular and widespread form of entertainment. Video game platforms are constantly trying to create video games that are faster, more exciting, and more immersive. Typically, a video game is played on a game console or computer that displays game graphics via a display device, such as a TV or monitor, while the player interacts with the displayed game via a physical controller or other input device. Physical video game controllers usually include a number of control elements such as buttons, joysticks, trackpads, paddles, and so on.
[0003] In some cases, such as in mobile games, a video game may include buttons and other control elements that are displayed on a touchscreen. However, positioning buttons and other video game control elements on a touchscreen may not be a straightforward task. For example, it can be difficult to find the best placement for video game control elements within a touchscreen so that a video game player can (1) view the game displayed on the touchscreen (i.e., the control elements need to be positioned so that they do not obscure the video game being displayed and / or take up too much space on the touchscreen) and (2) comfortably hold the Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 17 / 72 2 / 44 display device and interact with video game control elements displayed for longer periods. Similarly, it can be difficult to determine ideal combinations of control elements to place in various areas of the touchscreen.
[0004] Discovering and implementing ideal layouts of video game control elements can be an exhaustive and resource-intensive process. For example, video game designers may go through numerous iterations in an attempt to identify ideal layouts, including coding a specific layout of video game control elements into a video game, releasing the video game for testing, and making changes to the coded layout based on the tests. This process can deplete computing resources, including processing, memory, and network resources, especially when the video game designer needs to engage in a large number of iterations to arrive at a video game control layout that resonates with video game players.
[0005] Even when the video game designer finally gets the layout right, more testing and design may be needed when the layout is used in connection with a different touchscreen. For example, even if a layout of video game control elements is successful when implemented on a smartphone touchscreen, that same layout may or may not be suitable when implemented on a different type of touchscreen, such as a tablet touchscreen. At that point, the video game designer may need to engage in the same unnecessary iterations of layout testing before figuring out how the layout needs to change to be implemented correctly on that touchscreen. Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 18 / 72 3 / 44 to the larger touch. SUMMARY
[0006] As will be described in greater detail below, this disclosure describes implementations that cause video game control elements within a pre-validated video game control composition to be rendered on a second display device according to positioning and scaling instructions dictated by the composition, thus negating the need for the time-consuming and resource-intensive iterative testing process described above. In one example, a computer-implemented method might include detecting a request for a video game control composition to be rendered on a second display device that serves as a game controller for a video game displayed on a first display device, identifying the video game control composition that includes a plurality of video game control elements, placement instructions for the plurality of video game control elements, and scaling instructions for the plurality of video game control elements, determining one or more features of the second display device, and causing the plurality of video game control elements of the video game control composition to be rendered on the second display device according to the placement instructions and scaling instructions in view of one or more features of the second display device.
[0007] In one example, the detection of the request for the composition of the video game controller may be in response to a programming call within the video game or to a system request as part of the video game startup. Furthermore, the request for the composition of the controller... Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 19 / 72 A 4 / 44 video game composition is rendered on the second screen device, which may include a request for the plurality of video game control elements from the video game control composition to be rendered in a first area of the second screen device.
[0008] In some examples, the computer-implemented method may further include detecting a request for an additional video game control composition to be rendered in a second area of the second screen device simultaneously with the plurality of video game control elements of the video game control composition in the first area of the second screen device, and causing video game control elements of the additional video game control composition to be rendered in the second area of the second screen device.
[0009] In some examples, determining one or more characteristics of the second display device may include determining one or more constructs of the second display device, a display size of the second display device, or display preferences associated with the second display device. Additionally, placement instructions may include instructions to render a video game controller element within the video game controller composition relative to an edge of the second display device, while scaling instructions may include instructions to render a video game controller element within the video game controller composition according to the construct of the second display device or relative to the display size of the second display device.
[0010] In some examples, causing the plurality of video game control elements of the video game control composition to be rendered in the second Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 20 / 72 5 / 44 display device may also include causing the plurality of video game control elements of the video game control composition to be rendered on the second display device according to the display preferences associated with the second display device. Additionally, identifying the video game control composition may include identifying the video game control composition within a repository of pre-validated video game control compositions.
[0011] Some examples described in this document include a system with at least one physical processor and physical memory, including computer executable instructions that, when executed by at least one physical processor, cause at least one physical process to perform various acts. In at least one example, the computer executable instructions, when executed by at least one physical processor, cause at least one physical processor to perform acts, including detecting a request for a video game control composition to be rendered on a second display device that serves as a game controller for a video game displayed on a first display device, identifying the video game control composition that includes a plurality of video game control elements,Positioning instructions for the plurality of video game control elements and scaling instructions for the plurality of video game control elements, determining one or more characteristics of the second screen device and causing the plurality of video game control elements of the video game control composition to be rendered on the second screen device according to the positioning instructions and scaling instructions in view of one or more characteristics of the second screen device. Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 21 / 72 6 / 44 screen.
[0012] In some examples, the method described above is encoded as computer-readable instructions in a computer-readable medium. In one example, the computer-readable instructions, when executed by at least one processor of a computing device, cause the computing device to detect a request for a video game control composition to be rendered on a second display device that serves as a game controller for a video game displayed on a first display device, identify the video game control composition that includes a plurality of video game control elements, positioning instructions for the plurality of video game control elements, and scaling instructions for the plurality of video game control elements,Determine one or more characteristics of the second screen device and cause the plurality of video game control elements of the video game control composition to be rendered on the second screen device according to the positioning instructions and the dimensioning instructions in view of one or more characteristics of the second screen device.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EXEMPLARY MODALITIES Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, p. 23 / 72 8 / 44
[0020] As mentioned above, designing and implementing video game control layouts is often problematic, particularly in the mobile gaming space (i.e., where physical controllers cannot be used) and in connection with video games where a second screen device (e.g., a smartphone) is used as a video game controller. These problems can arise because the layouts of video game control elements must be individually coded into a video game and then exhaustively tested and modified over numerous iterations. This can lead to computational waste as video game designers go through this iterative process. Once tested, a specific layout may still prove ineffective when the video game is played on a different type of device with different screen dimensions.Furthermore, even when a video game layout proves effective in connection with a specific video game, allowing ad hoc video game layouts per game can lead to player confusion when switching between video games, ultimately resulting in reduced usability across the entire video game platform that supports those video games.
[0021] In light of these problems, the present disclosure describes a system that generates and implements validated video game controller compositions for use in video game development and gameplay. For example, the implementations described in this document can generate and store a video game controller composition that includes multiple video game controller elements, as well as coded instructions on how the video game controller elements should be positioned relative to the edges of a touchscreen controller. Furthermore, the implementations described in this document can generate the composition of Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 24 / 72 9 / 44 video game controller with coded instructions on how the video game's control elements should be scaled when the associated video game is played in connection with a touchscreen controller of a different display type or size. Once generated, a video game designer can code the complete and validated video game control composition into the video game, instead of individually testing and coding each video game control element referenced by the composition.
[0022] In this way, the implementations described in this document avoid the various types of computational waste generated by the traditional iterative testing process of video game control element layouts, because each video game control composition has been pre-validated to ensure an ideal layout of the video game control elements. Furthermore, the implementations described in this document avoid other inefficiencies common to the design of video game control layouts, providing developers with the flexibility to mix and match various validated compositions, like puzzle pieces, to provide different layouts and functionalities.Furthermore, since each composition contains multiple video game control elements, a single composition only needs to be coded into one video game to provide the functionality of all the underlying video game control elements included in the composition, resulting in improved development and testing efficiency.
[0023] The features of any of the implementations described in this document can be used in combination with each other in accordance with the general principles described in this document. These and other implementations, features and advantages will be better understood after Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 25 / 72 10 / 44 read the following detailed description together with the attached drawings and claims.
[0024] The following will provide, with reference to FIGS. 1-4, detailed descriptions of a video game control composition system that generates and implements video game control compositions. For example, an exemplary network environment is illustrated in FIG. 1 to show the video game control composition system in connection with a first display device and a second display device. FIG. 2 illustrates the actions taken by the video game control composition system to generate video game control compositions for use on the second display device during gameplay. FIG. 3A-3D illustrates example video game control compositions generated by the video game control composition system. Finally, FIG. 4 provides further details regarding the characteristics and functionalities of the video game control composition system.
[0025] As we have just mentioned, FIG. 1 illustrates an exemplary network environment that implements aspects of this disclosure. For example, network environment 100 may include server(s) 112, a digital content receiver 114, a first display device 118, a second display device 120, and a network 122. As shown further on, the server(s) 112 and the digital content receiver 114 may include memory 106, additional items 108, and a physical processor 110.
[0026] In one or more implementations, as shown in FIG. 1, the first screen device 118 may be a television and the second screen device 120 may be a smartphone. In some examples, the display of the second screen device 120 is a touch screen that may serve as a controller for the video game 103 displayed. Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 26 / 72 11 / 44 on the first display device 118. As shown further, the digital content receiver 114 can be a separate device from the first display device 118 and the second display device 120, and the first display device 118 can be physically separate from the second display device 120. In this implementation, the digital content receiver 114, the first display device 118, and the second display device 120 can be on the same subnet (e.g., in the same residence or location) or they can be on different subnets. In further implementations, the digital content receiver 114 and / or the functionality of the digital content receiver 114 can be incorporated into the first display device 118 and / or the second display device 120. In further implementations, the first display device 118 can be a digital projector, monitor, or other display device.Similarly, the second 120-inch screen device could be a tablet, a smart wearable device, or any other type of device with an interactive touchscreen.
[0027] As shown in FIG. 1, a video game control composition system 102 can be implemented as part of a digital content system 104 within memory 106 on server(s) 112. In one or more implementations, the digital content system 104 may include a subscription streaming service to provide digital media (e.g., movies, TV programs, video games, etc.) to content subscribers. Furthermore, the video game control composition system 102 can access the video game 103, run the video game 103, transmit the output of the video game 103 to one or more of the first display device 118 and the second display device 120 (e.g., to make the first device of Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 27 / 72 12 / 44 screen 118 render game graphics, so that the second screen device 120 displays video game control elements, such as buttons, joysticks, etc.), receive control inputs from a video game controller (e.g., as the second screen device 120), etc. In one or more implementations, the video game control composition system 102 works in conjunction with the video game 103 to change game states, update game graphics, render video game control compositions or cause video game control compositions to be rendered on the second screen device 120, receive control inputs from the second screen device 120, and update the game graphics on the first screen device 118 based on the inputs.
[0028] As shown in FIG. 1, the digital content receiver 114 may include a digital content system application 116 stored in memory 106. In some implementations, the digital content system application 116 may communicate information to and from the digital content system 104 via the network 122. In at least one implementation, the digital content system 104 – in conjunction with the video game 103 – may access and utilize data received by the digital content system 104 in the generation and provision of video game control compositions.
[0029] In some implementations, the digital content system application 116 may be additionally installed on the first display device 118 and / or the second display device 120. For example, in one implementation, the first display device 118 may receive video game display information via the digital content receiver 114, and the second display device 120 may communicate directly with the server(s) 112 via an additional instance of the content system application. Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 28 / 72 13 / 44 digital 116 installed on it. For example, the digital content system application 116 can be embedded in the second display device 120 so that the second display device 120 can communicate directly with the digital content system 104 and / or the video game control composition system 102. In a further implementation, the first display device 118 can use an instance of the digital content system application 116 installed on it to communicate directly with the digital content system 104 and / or the video game control composition system 102 via the network 122, while the second display device 118 can use a separate instance of the digital content system application 116 installed on it to communicate directly with the digital content system 104 and / or the dynamic impact zone system 102 also via the network 122.In some implementations, network environment 100 may not include digital content receiver 114.
[0030] As mentioned above, the digital content receiver 114 (and in some implementations the first display device 118 and / or the second display device 120) can be communicatively coupled with the server(s) 112 via the network 122. In one or more implementations, the network 122 can represent any type or form of communication network, such as the Internet, and can include one or more physical connections, such as a LAN, and / or wireless connections, such as a WAN. In some implementations, the network 122 can represent a telecommunications carrier network. In at least one implementation, the network 122 can represent combinations of networks such that the digital content receiver 114 and the first display device 118 can communicate with the digital content system 104 via a wireless network, while the second Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 29 / 72 The 14 / 44 screen device 120 can communicate with the dynamic impact zone system 102 via a cellular network.
[0031] Although FIG. 1 illustrates components of exemplary network environment 100 in one arrangement, other arrangements are possible. For example, in one implementation, the video game control composition system 102 may operate as a native application that can be installed on the digital content receiver 114 and / or the second display device 120. In another implementation, the video game control composition system 102 may operate on multiple servers. Furthermore, in some implementations, exemplary network environment 100 may include multiple second display devices 120—such as when a multiplayer game is being played on the first display device 118. Similarly, exemplary network environment 100 may also include multiple first display devices 118, such as when multiple players are playing a video game on separate display screens. For example, in this implementation, the video game control composition system 102 can support the same video game being played by multiple players (e.g., on multiple second screen devices and multiple first screen devices) in multiple locations and on different user accounts within the digital content system 104.
[0032] In one or more implementations, the methods and steps executed by the 102 video game control composition system refer to various terms. For example, a video game might refer to a compiled digital program that causes the game's graphics to be rendered on a display device, such as a first screen device, as user input received through a second screen device manipulates or interacts with the rendered game graphics. A video game might include points, places, junctions, levels, Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 30 / 72 15 / 44 characters and other objects displayed.
[0033] As used in this document, a “video game controller composition” can refer to a grouping of video game controller elements. For example, a video game controller composition might include a list of video game controller elements and computer-readable instructions on how to render those video game controller elements within the grouping. To illustrate, a video game controller composition might include one joystick video game controller element and two button video game controller elements. The composition might further include instructions that determine the size at which those video game controller elements should be rendered and how the joystick should be positioned relative to the two buttons and vice versa.
[0034] As used in this document, a “video game control element” may include any type of interactive control that can be displayed on a second screen device. For example, video game control elements may include, but are not limited to, joysticks, buttons, trackpads, triggers, switches, option buttons, and so forth. A video game control element may also include gameplay elements specific to the video game being played (e.g., a deck of cards, an inventory of items). Video game control elements may be rendered in various sizes and in any position within a touchscreen. When a video game controller element is included or referenced by a video game controller composition, the video game controller element can be rendered at any position within an area defined by the video game controller composition, as defined by the composition. Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 31 / 72 16 / 44 video game controller.
[0035] As used in this document, the term “positioning instructions” may refer to instructions that determine where a video game controller element referenced by a video game controller composition should be rendered within an area defined by the video game controller composition and / or where the video game controller composition should be rendered relative to an edge of the second 120 display device. In at least one implementation, a goal of the positioning and scaling instructions (discussed below) is to ensure that an associated video game controller composition is displayed with a consistent size and consistent edge distances, regardless of the size of the second 120 display device. For example, the placement instructions for a composition might specify that the two video game control elements referenced by the composition should be rendered on opposite horizontal sides of the area defined by the composition (for example, an area of 150 pixels by 150 pixels), but within 50 pixels of each other.
[0036] In addition, placement instructions can determine how a video game controller composition should be positioned relative to the edges of the touchscreen of the second screen device (e.g., the second 120" screen device) that is acting as the video game controller based on margins (e.g., measured in physical units such as inches, measured in display units such as pixels). For example, placement instructions may indicate an intended margin and a smaller margin. In one or more implementations, the intended margin of a composition may be an ideal distance to position the composition relative to an edge of the Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 32 / 72 17 / 44 second screen device 120, while the smaller margin of the composition may indicate a minimum distance from the edge of the second screen device 120 to position the composition. In at least one implementation, if the display of the second screen device 120 is not large enough to accommodate the minimum distance of the composition, the video game control composition system 102 may not allow the composition to be rendered on the second screen device 120.
[0037] Furthermore, as used in this document, the term “scaling instructions” may refer to instructions that determine how video game control elements referenced by a video game control composition should be rendered in view of one or more characteristics of the second screen device where the video game control elements are being rendered. For example, the scaling instructions for a composition might determine that two video game control elements referenced by the composition should be rendered at a small size and within 20 pixels of each other when the composition is rendered on a smartphone. The same scaling instructions might determine that the two video game control elements should be rendered at a medium size and 75 pixels apart when the composition is rendered on a tablet. In this way, sizing instructions can modify the size and positioning of a video game control element within an area defined by the video game control composition.
[0038] Thus, “characteristics of the second screen device may include information associated with the second screen device that may affect how a video game control composition is rendered on the second device Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 33 / 72 18 / 44 screen. For example, the characteristics of the second screen device may include a build of the second screen device (e.g., a brand of the second screen device), a model of the second screen device (e.g., a product name of the second screen device), and a touchscreen display size of the second screen device.
[0039] In one or more implementations, the second display device may include native display screen scaling capabilities. For example, these capabilities may serve to make the displayed content easier for the user to interact with and / or view. In at least one implementation, the positioning and scaling instructions generated by the 102 video game control composition system in connection with the characteristics of the second display device may override or neutralize the native display screen scaling capabilities of the second display device. For example, the native display screen scaling capabilities may not be effective in connection with the 102 video game control composition system because the generic scaling of video game control compositions may not produce consistent results in connection with screens of different sizes.Instead, the 102 video game control composition system implements customized positioning and scaling instructions that are specifically tailored to optimize player usability.
[0040] As used in this document, a “display preference” may include a user setting configured with respect to the second display device. For example, a display preference may instruct that text be displayed at a specific size, that colors Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 34 / 72 19 / 44 are displayed within a specific spectrum, and so on. As used in this document, “areas of a second screen device” can refer to areas within the touchscreen of the second screen device where a video game control composition can be rendered. For example, areas of the second screen device might include a right side of the touchscreen, a left side of the touchscreen, an upper half of the touchscreen, a lower half of the touchscreen, an upper right corner of the touchscreen, a lower right corner of the touchscreen, an upper left corner of the touchscreen, a lower left corner of the touchscreen, a central portion of the touchscreen, etc. In one or more implementations, multiple video game control compositions can be rendered in separate areas of the second screen device. In most implementations, only one video game controller composition can be rendered in an area of the second screen device at a time.
[0041] As used in this document, “pre-validated” refers to a type of video game control composition that has already demonstrated itself to be an optimized collection of positioned video game control elements and associated scaling instructions. In one or more implementations, a pre-validated video game control composition can be coded into a video game without any of the same testing cycles required by previous systems.
[0042] Thus, “control inputs can refer to data that represents how a specific video game controller interacts during gameplay. For example, a control input might indicate that a control button was pressed and held down for five seconds during gameplay. “Touch gestures can refer to types of Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 35 / 72 20 / 44 interactions that can be detected in connection with video game controls. For example, a touch gesture can be a tap gesture, a press-and-hold touch gesture, a press-and-swipe touch gesture, a multi-finger touch gesture, and / or a variable pressure touch gesture. Control inputs may also include sound inputs, such as recording or transmission via a microphone on the second display device. In addition, gyroscopic inputs may include changes detected in connection with a gyroscope on the second display device that indicate that the second display device is being tilted, rotated, flipped, etc.
[0043] As mentioned above, FIG. 2 is a flow diagram of an exemplary computer-implemented method 200 for causing video game control elements of a video game control composition to be rendered on the second screen device 120 according to positioning instructions associated with an area defined by the composition and scaling instructions that are specific to the characteristics of the second screen device 120. The steps shown in FIG. 2 can be performed by any suitable computer executable code and / or computing system, including the system(s) illustrated in FIG. 4. In one example, each of the steps shown in FIG. 2 can represent an algorithm whose structure includes and / or is represented by several substeps, examples of which will be provided in more detail below.
[0044] As illustrated in FIG. 2, in step 202, the video game control composition system 102 can detect a request for a video game control composition to be rendered on a second screen device that serves as a game controller for a video game. Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 36 / 72 21 / 44 displayed on a first screen device. For example, the video game control composition system 102 might receive the request as part of a video game's initialization. More specifically, the digital content system 104 might initialize a selected video game by generating game graphics for display on the first screen device 118. The digital content system 104 might further initialize the selected video game by converting the second screen device 120 into a video game controller. As part of this conversion, the compiled video game programming code might include a call for a specific video game control composition to be rendered on the second screen device 120. In further implementations, the compiled video game programming code might include additional calls for different video game control compositions to be rendered at different points on the second screen device 120 during gameplay. In some implementations, the 102 video game control composition system may receive requests for video game control composition as part of a user request. For example, the 102 video game control composition system may receive the request as part of an initial user game experience setup associated with a specific video game that allows the user to configure how they would like to interact with the video game's control elements.
[0045] As illustrated in FIG. 2, in step 204, the video game control composition system 1 02 can identify the video game control composition comprising a plurality of video game control elements, positioning instructions for the plurality of video game control elements, and instructions for Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 37 / 72 22 / 44 scaling for the plurality of video game control elements. For example, in response to the detection of a request or call for video game control composition, the 102 video game control composition system can access a repository of video game control compositions to identify the requested composition. In at least one implementation, the video game control composition repository can store and maintain video game control compositions that are pre-validated. For example, the video game control compositions in the repository can be pre-tested to include video game control elements in combinations and positions that have proven to be effective in connection with video game gameplay.
[0046] In step 206, the video game control composition system 102 can determine one or more characteristics of the second screen device (for example, the second screen device 120). For example, the video game control composition system 102 can determine characteristics of the second screen device 120, including, but not limited to, a construction and / or model of the second screen device 120, a display size of the second screen device 120, and display preferences associated with the second screen device 120. The video game control composition system 102 can determine these and other characteristics by querying the second screen device 120, accessing stored data associated with the second screen device 120, and / or accessing stored data associated with the user of the second screen device 120 within the digital content system 104.
[0047] Furthermore, as illustrated in FIG. 2, in step 208, the video game control composition system 102 can make the plurality of control elements Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 38 / 72 23 / 44 of the video game controller composition are rendered on the second screen device according to placement instructions and scaling instructions in view of one or more characteristics of the second screen device. For example, the video game controller composition system 102 can cause the video game controller elements to be rendered on the second screen device 120 according to placement instructions that determine how the video game controller elements are positioned relative to each other and to the edges of the second screen device's touchscreen.
[0048] In more detail, the video game controller composition system 102 can cause the selected video game controller composition to be rendered within a specific area of the second screen device display 12 0 (e.g., right side, left side, upper left corner, lower right corner, etc.) at a desired size indicated by the composition scaling instructions. The video game controller composition system 102 can also cause the composition to be rendered according to the desired margin indicated by the composition placement instructions. If there is not enough space on the second screen device display 12 0, the video game controller composition system 102 can reduce the composition according to the scaling instructions.Furthermore, the 102 video game controller composition system can take into account user-specified and / or device-specific overrides when rendering the composition to reduce margins, avoid safe areas within the screen, adhere to user customizations, and so on.
[0049] As discussed above, the composition system Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 39 / 72 24 / 44 video game controller 102 can cause the second screen device 120 to render a video game controller composition that includes one or more video game controller elements to allow the second screen device 120 to be used as a video game controller for a selected video game. FIGS. 3A-3D illustrate further details regarding how the second screen device 120 causes video game controller compositions to be jam rendered on the second screen device 120.
[0050] For example, FIG. 3A illustrates an arrangement 302a on a touch screen 300 of the second screen device 120. In one or more implementations, the arrangement 302a may include video game control elements 304a, 304b, 304c, 304d, 304e, and 304f. In at least one implementation, the video game control elements 304a-304f are positioned within the arrangement 302a in at least one area, such as areas 306a, 306b, 306c, 306d, and 306e. For example, the video game control element 304a (e.g., a joystick control element) may be positioned in the left area 306a. Similarly, the video game control elements 304c, 304d, 304e, and 304f (e.g., button control elements) can be positioned in the right area 306c.Some other video game control elements, such as the game-specific video game control element 304b (for example, a handheld radio button control element), may be positioned in the central area 306b and / or the lower area 306e.
[0051] As discussed above, earlier systems may require the video game designer to individually position each of the video game control elements 304a-304f within the layout 302a. Furthermore, and as discussed above, earlier systems typically do not provide any guidance as to whether the Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 40 / 72 The 25 / 44 grouping of the 304c-304f video game control elements in the right-hand area 306c would be preferred by video game players, or whether the positioning of the joystick video game control element 304a in the left-hand area 306a at the given distance from the edge of the touchscreen 300 would be comfortable for most players' hand sizes. Instead, the video game designer would have to iteratively modify the size and positioning of the 304a-304f video game control elements within the 302a arrangement until test feedback indicated that the 302a arrangement was satisfactory. As discussed above, this process can be slow and generate waste.
[0052] To remedy these problems, the 102 video game control composition system can generate and maintain video game control compositions including one or more video game control elements that are pre-validated in terms of usability, positioning, and scalability. For example, as shown in FIG. 3B, the 102 video game control composition system can generate and maintain video game control compositions 308a, 308b, 308c, 308d, and 308e. In one or more implementations, video game control compositions 308a-308e include one or more video game control elements (e.g., an up-down-left-right control element, small button control elements, large button control elements, joystick control elements).
[0053] In addition, each of the 308a-308e video game control compositions may include positioning instructions. For example, the positioning instructions for the 308b video game control composition may dictate how the 308b video game control composition should be positioned relative to one or more edges of the 300 touchscreen of the second screen device 120. For Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 41 / 72 26 / 44 to illustrate, the video game control composition 308b (e.g., a joystick) can be positioned in the left area 306a or the right area 306c of the touchscreen display 300. Thus, the positioning instructions may determine that the video game control composition 308b should be positioned within a desired margin of 20 pixels, but not less than a smaller margin of 15 pixels from the left edge of the touchscreen 300 when in the left area 306a. The positioning instructions may dictate equal or different margins for the video game control composition 308b when it is in the right-side area 306c.
[0054] In addition, each of the 308a-308e video game controller compositions can include scaling instructions. For example, the scaling instructions for the 308e video game controller composition can dictate how the size and positioning of the button control elements change based on the characteristics of the second implementation screen device 120. To illustrate, if the display size of the second screen device 120 is larger (for example, as in a second tablet screen device), the scaling instructions for the 308e video game controller composition can instruct that the 308e video game controller composition be scaled so that the button control elements in it are rendered with a 20% increase in size and in positions that are 20 pixels further apart from each other. On the other hand, if the display size of the second screen device is typical (for example, as in a smartphone), the scaling instructions for the 308e video game controller composition may instruct that the 308e video game controller composition be rendered at its intended size. Details. Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 42 / 72 27 / 44 additional details regarding the positioning of the video game controller assembly and sizing instructions are provided below with respect to FIG. 3D.
[0055] In one or more implementations, a video game may include references to any of the video game control compositions 308a-308e. Thus, at initialization or at any other point during the game, the video game control composition system 102 may detect a request for one or more video game control compositions 308a-308e to be rendered on the second display device 120. The video game control composition system 102 may then cause the requested video game control compositions to be rendered on the second display device 120 according to its placement and scaling instructions. Additional implementations may include video game control compositions of any configuration.
[0056] For example, FIG. 3C illustrates example arrangements 302b, 302c, 302d, and 302e that the video game control composition system 102 can cause to be rendered on the second screen device 120, including various combinations of video game control compositions 308a-308e. Thus, instead of requiring the video game to request each of the five video game control elements in arrangement 302e separately, for example, the video game control composition system 102 can cause arrangement 302e to be rendered on the second screen device 120 in response to detecting a request for video game control composition 308a and a request for video game control composition 308c. In at least one implementation, the video game control composition system 102 can receive both requests simultaneously. Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 43 / 72 28 / 44
[0057] As mentioned above, the video game control composition system 102 can cause a video game control composition to be positioned and scaled according to the characteristics of the second screen device 120. To illustrate, FIG. 3D shows the arrangement 302d including the video game control composition 308b and the video game control composition 308e on the touch screen 300 of the second screen device 120. FIG. 3D also shows the arrangement 302d on the larger touch screen 300' of the second screen device 120' (e.g., a tablet-type computing device). In one or more implementations, the placement and scaling instructions associated with the 308b and 308e video game control compositions within the 302d arrangement may dictate how the placement and scaling of the 308b, 308e video game control composition changes from one second 120" screen device to the other second 120" screen device.
[0058] For example, in at least one implementation, the placement and scaling instructions may follow an algorithm or a series of steps to dictate how a video game controller composition is displayed on a touchscreen (e.g., touchscreen 300 or touchscreen 30 0'). For example, when the video game controller composition system 102 initially causes the second screen device 120 to render a video game controller composition, the placement and scaling instructions may dictate an intended size of the video game controller composition. The placement and scaling instructions may further dictate intended margins, indicating how far away the video game controller composition (e.g., the outermost edge of the controller element) is from the intended size. Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 44 / 72 29 / 44 (outermost videogame within the videogame controller composition) should be placed from one edge of the touchscreen. To illustrate, the placement and sizing instructions for the 308e videogame controller composition may specify that the videogame controller elements within this composition should be sized as shown and should have an intended margin of 50 pixels from the right edge of the 300 touchscreen. In at least one implementation, as discussed above, the intended size and margins associated with the 308e videogame controller composition can be determined as ideal based on research and testing.
[0059] The placement and sizing instructions may further determine whether any device-specific or user-oriented replacement needs to be taken into account. For example, the display bezel of the 300 touchscreen may be large enough that the intended margin of the 308e video game control composition may be reduced (e.g., but not less than the smallest margin indicated by the placement and sizing instructions). In this way, the 102 video game control composition system—in light of the placement and sizing instructions—may determine whether such a replacement should be applied based on the characteristics of the second screen device 120, which may be indicated by the construction and model of the second screen device 120.
[0060] Positioning and sizing instructions may further determine whether the placement of a video game controller composition conflicts with one or more “safe areas” of a second display device. As used in this document, a “safe area” may refer to an area within a touchscreen. Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 45 / 72 30 / 44 which should not include any user interface elements (e.g., as determined by the construction and / or model of the second screen device 120). For example, the touchscreen 300 of the second screen device 120 may include a safe area at the right edge of the touchscreen 300. Therefore, the positioning and sizing instructions associated with the video game controller composition 308e may determine that the intended margin must be modified based on this safe area.
[0061] At this point, the placement and scaling instructions may further scale the 308e video game control composition based on other display considerations. For example, the 308e video game control composition may require 200 pixels of display space beyond the intended margin. Other video game control compositions (e.g., the 308b video game control composition) may be placed so that there are not 200 pixels of display space remaining. Given this, the placement and scaling instructions may determine that the 308e video game control composition should be scaled down by a threshold percentage. In one or more implementations, the 102 video game control composition system may prioritize the placement of video game control compositions according to their intended margins rather than scaling the same video game control compositions. In this way, the 102 video game controller composition system can reduce the margins associated with a composition to its smallest sizes before it begins to reduce the composition to an even smaller size.
[0062] The positioning and sizing instructions may also indicate the same steps in connection with the larger 300' touchscreen on the second screen device. Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 46 / 72 31 / 44 120'. For example, the placement and sizing instructions can position the 308e video game control composition within the 300' touchscreen according to its intended margin. In at least one implementation, the placement and sizing instructions determine that an intended margin for the 308e video game control composition is proportional to the size of any touchscreen where it is displayed. The placement and sizing instructions can also take into account overrides and safe areas. Overall, the placement and sizing instructions can aim for the associated video game control composition to have consistent size and edge distances, regardless of the size of the second 120' screen device.
[0063] In one or more implementations, the positioning and scaling instructions may further dictate the positioning of the video game control composition in view of the device's balance. For example, the second smaller 120' screen device may be balanced so that it is held by its lower corners during use. The same hand positioning in connection with the second 120' screen device would be unbalanced and would cause a risk of the second 120' screen device falling. Likewise, the positioning and scaling instructions may determine that the positioning of the video game control composition 30 8e moves closer to a central balance point of the second 120' screen device. In at least one implementation, the video game control composition system 102 may determine the balance point of the second 120' screen device based on its determined characteristics.
[0064] As mentioned above, the compositions of Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 47 / 72 32 / 44 video game controllers 308b, 308e can be pre-validated so that the size and positioning of the video game control elements on them are very likely to be comfortable and well-balanced during gameplay when used in connection with the larger 300' touchscreen of the second 120' screen device — just as the same video game control elements are very likely to be comfortable and well-balanced during gameplay when used in connection with the 300' touchscreen of the second 120' screen device.
[0065] As mentioned above and as shown in FIG. 4, the video game control composition system 102 performs several functions related to rendering video game control compositions on the second screen device 120. FIG. 4 is a block diagram 400 of the video game control composition system 102 operating in the memory 106 of the server(s) 112 while performing these functions. Thus, FIG. 4 provides additional details regarding these functions. For example, as shown in FIG. 4, the video game control composition system 102 may include a communication manager 402, a composition manager 404, and a second screen device manager 406. As shown in FIG. 4, the additional items 108 may store and maintain composition data 410.
[0066] In certain implementations, the video game control composition system 102 may represent one or more software applications, modules, or programs that, when executed by a computing device, may cause the computing device to perform one or more tasks. For example, and as will be described in greater detail below, one or more of the communication managers 402, the composition manager 404, or the second screen device manager 406 may represent software. Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 48 / 72 33 / 44 stored and configured to run on one or more computing devices, such as the server(s) 112. One or more of the communication manager 402, composition manager 404 and second screen device manager 406 of the video game control composition system 102 shown in FIG. 4 may also represent all or part of one or more special purpose computers to run a or more refas.
[0067] As mentioned above and as shown in FIG. 4, the video game control composition system 102 may include the communication manager 402. In one or more implementations, the communication manager 402 may detect requests for video game control compositions to be rendered on the second display device 120. For example, the communication manager 402 may detect requests such as compiled video game code function calls during video game initialization. The communication manager 402 may also receive characteristic data from the second display device 120 for use in rendering video game control elements on the second display device 120.
[0068] The 402 communication manager can also send, transmit, or provide video game control compositions to second display devices. For example, the 402 communication manager can transmit rendering instructions to the second display device 120 that cause the second display device 120 to render one or more video game control compositions on a touchscreen. To illustrate, the 402 communication manager can send instructions that cause the second display device to identify specific video game controls and assemble the specific video game controls in a specific arrangement. Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, page 49 / 72 34 / 44
[0069] As mentioned above and as shown in FIG. 4, the 102 video game controller composition system may include the 404 composition manager. In one or more implementations, the 404 composition manager generates and stores video game controller compositions. For example, the 404 composition manager may generate a video game controller composition including references to one or more video game controller elements and an area size for the composition (e.g., 500 pixels by 500 pixels). The 4.04 composition manager can also generate the video game controller composition, including placement instructions that dictate sizes for one or more video game controller elements, positions for one or more video game controller elements relative to the size of the composition area and / or relative to the positions of other video game controller elements within the composition, and positions for the video game controller composition relative to the display edges of the second screen device. The 4.04 composition manager can also generate the video game controller composition, including scaling instructions that determine how the sizes and positions of one or more video game controller elements should change based on the characteristics of the second screen device.
[0070] In at least one implementation, the placement and sizing instructions may further dictate areas of the second 120-screen device (e.g., areas within the touchscreen of the second 120-screen device) where the video game control composition may or may not be placed. For example, these additional instructions may determine that the video game control composition must be placed on the right-hand side of a second 120-screen smartphone device. The same instructions Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, pp. 50 / 72 35 / 44 may further determine that the video game controller composition should be positioned in the lower right corner of a second tablet screen device 120. Similarly, the composition manager 404 may generate the video game controller composition with positioning and sizing instructions related to the construction and / or model of the second screen device 120. For example, the composition manager 404 may generate these positioning and sizing instructions that are customized for the construction and / or model of the second screen device 120 in place of or in addition to the sizing instructions based on screen size.
[0071] In one or more implementations, the composition manager 404 can modify placement and scaling instructions associated with a video game controller composition based on the display preferences associated with the second screen device 120. For example, the composition manager 404 can analyze the display preferences associated with the second screen device 120 and modify aspects of the video game controller composition by: changing the text size in connection with the video game controller elements referenced by the composition, changing the display colors associated with the video game controller elements referenced by the composition, positioning the video game controller elements referenced by the composition (for example, to accommodate the hands of players with disabilities), and so on.
[0072] In one or more implementations, the 404 composition manager can further modify the positioning and scaling instructions associated with a video game controller composition based on user customizations associated with the second screen device 120. By Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, pp. 51 / 72 36 / 44 For example, composition manager 404 can provide a calibration process as part of the videogame initialization 103 that prompts the player to perform tasks on the touchscreen 300 of the second screen device 120 that can be used to determine information about the player's hand size. To illustrate, composition manager 404 might ask the player to hold the second screen device 120 and then slide their thumbs in a semicircular motion. From this information, composition manager 404 can dynamically adjust the positions and scale of videogame control compositions and / or adjust the sizes and positions of videogame control elements within videogame control compositions. In some implementations, composition manager 404 may allow the position, size, and scale of a videogame control composition to be directly manipulated by a player. In one or more implementations, the 40 4 composition manager can replace existing placement and scaling instructions associated with a video game control composition based on these user customizations.
[0073] In at least one implementation, the 404 composition manager can further validate video game controller compositions. For example, the 404 composition manager can use one or more computer models to determine whether a proposed video game controller composition meets various benchmark parameters. To illustrate, the 404 composition manager can train one or more computer models to determine whether combinations of video game controller elements meet various benchmarks, whether the relative positions of the video game controller elements meet various benchmarks, whether the positioning of the composition's display area meets... Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, pp. 52 / 72 37 / 44 various benchmarks and so on. In response to receiving a prediction from one or more computer models indicating that a video game controller composition meets the relevant parameters, the composition manager 404 can validate the composition and store it in a repository of prevalidated video game controller compositions (e.g., as part of composition data 410 in additional items 108).
[0074] As mentioned above and as shown in FIG. 4, the video game control composition system 102 may include the second screen device manager 406. In one or more implementations, the second screen device manager 406 may determine characteristics of the second screen device 120. For example, the second screen device manager 406 may receive characteristic data of the second screen device 120. From this data, the second screen device manager 406 may determine characteristics of the second screen device 120, such as, but not limited to, a construction of the second screen device 120, a model of the second screen device 120, a display size of the second screen device 120, and display preferences of the second screen device 120.
[0075] In addition, the second display device manager 406 can cause the second display device 120 to render video game control elements according to a video game control composition. For example, the second display device manager 406 can identify video game control elements referenced by a video game control composition from a repository of pre-validated video game control compositions. The second display device manager 406 can also generate specific instructions for building and / or modeling. Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, pp. 53 / 72 38 / 44 of the second display device 120 so that the second display device 120 renders the identified video game control elements according to the instructions associated with the composition. The second display device manager 406 can transmit the video game control elements and the generated instructions to the second display device 120 via the communication manager 402. Additionally or alternatively, the second display device manager 406 can render the video game control composition on the server(s) 112 and then transmit the rendering to the second display device 120 for local display.
[0076] As shown in FIGS. 1 and 4, the server(s) 112 and the digital content receiver 114 may include one or more physical processors, such as the physical processor 110. The physical processor 110 may generally represent any type or form of hardware-implemented processing unit capable of interpreting and / or executing computer-readable instructions. In one implementation, the physical processor 110 may access and / or modify one or more components of the video game control composition system 102. Examples of physical processors include, without limitation, microprocessors, microcontrollers, Central Processing Units (CPUs), Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) implementing softcore processors, Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs), parts of one or more thereof, variations or combinations thereof, and / or any other suitable physical processor.
[0077] In addition, server(s) 112 and digital content receiver 114 may include memory 106. In one or more implementations, memory 106 generally represents any type or form of device or medium of Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, pp. 54 / 72 39 / 44 volatile or non-volatile storage capable of storing computer-readable data and / or instructions. In one example, memory 106 may store, load, and / or maintain one or more components of a video game control composition system 102. Examples of memory 106 may include, without limitation, random access memory (RAM), read-only memory (ROM), flash memory, hard disk drives (HDDs), solid-state drives (SSDs), optical disk drives, caches, variations or combinations thereof, and / or any other suitable storage memory.
[0078] Furthermore, as shown in FIG. 4, server(s) 112 and digital content receiver 114 may include additional items 108. On server(s) 112, additional items 108 may include composition data 410. In one or more implementations, composition data 410 may include a repository of pre-validated video game controller compositions. Furthermore, composition data 410 may include video game controller elements and computer models for use in validating video game controller compositions.
[0079] In summary, the 102 video game control composition system can generate and implement pre-validated video game control compositions that can be used as puzzle pieces to arrive at an ideal control layout. For example, in response to a video game control composition being coded into a video game, the 102 video game control composition system can automatically position and scale the video game control elements referenced by the composition in a way specific to the second screen device 120 where the video game control elements are used. As such, the 102 video game control composition system Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, pp. 55 / 72 40 / 44 avoids the waste previously generated by individually encoding video game control elements in a video game, testing the performance of the individually encoded video game control elements and then modifying the individually encoded video game control elements based on the tests. Instead, the 102 video game control composition system provides video game control compositions that can be encoded in a video game once to give access to multiple video game control elements. Example Modalities
[0080] Example 1: A computer-implemented method for causing video game control elements within a video game control composition to be jam-rendered on a second screen device according to positioning instructions and scaling instructions dictated by the composition. For example, the method might include detecting a request for a video game controller composition to be rendered on a second display device that serves as a game controller for a video game displayed on a first display device, identifying the video game controller composition that includes a plurality of video game controller elements, placement instructions for the plurality of video game controller elements, and scaling instructions for the plurality of video game controller elements, determining one or more characteristics of the second display device, and causing the plurality of video game controller elements of the video game controller composition to be rendered on the second display device according to the placement instructions and scaling instructions in view of one or more characteristics of the second display device. Petition 870250087983, dated 09 / 29 / 2025, pp. 56 / 72 41 / 44 screen.
[0081] Example 2: The computer-implemented method from Example 1, where the detection of the request for the video game control composition is in response to a programming call within the video game, or to a system request as part of the video game startup.
[0082] Example 3: The computer-implemented method of either Examples 1 and 2, wherein the request for the video game controller composition to be rendered on the second display device includes a request for the plurality of video game controller elements of the video game controller composition to be rendered in a first area of the second display device.
