1 / 14 “APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR FORMING A CAKE FROSTING LAYER”

[001] The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for forming a coating layer, for example, a decorative coating layer, for a cake base.

[002] The present invention also includes a method for covering a cake base using a coating layer formed by the method of the present invention.

[003] To produce a decorative cake, a cake base is prepared, usually made from a baked sponge cake, and then a decorative layer is applied over the base. The decorative layer can be formed from a spreadable material, such as cream, buttercream or chocolate cream, or it can be formed from a layer of frosting that is placed over the cake base and manually manipulated to come into contact with the cake base, with the excess frosting being removed.

[004] Cakes with a decorative layer of spreadable material lend themselves to mass production, as predetermined quantities of spreadable material can be automatically discharged onto pre-formed cake bases and subsequently automatically smoothed with minimal manual intervention by moving the cake base relative to a spatula or similar leveling device.
