Description

1 / 17 “Aqueous Cosmetic Composition, Method for Preventing Sweat from Being Released Quickly and Use” Field of Invention

[001] The present invention is in the field of cosmetic compositions, particularly compositions that can provide sweat control benefits, which are able to prevent sweat from being released rapidly, absorb or manage excess sweat. Background of the Invention

[002] The present invention relates to cosmetic compositions, particularly compositions that can provide sweat management benefits. The compositions are used to control or manage moisture (or excessive sweating) on the skin surface by topical application of the compositions to the body, particularly in the lower arm regions of the human body, i.e., the armpit, and sometimes even on the upper body near the chest. Such a composition can help prevent sweat from being released rapidly, absorb or manage excess sweat on the skin surface by topical application of the compositions to the body. Brief Description of the Invention

[003] The present inventors have surprisingly observed that an aqueous cosmetic composition comprising a certain amount of a specific polymer selected from polyacrylic acid, polyacrylate, polymethacrylic acid and polymethacrylate having low molecular weight, and a certain amount of a water-soluble metallic salt, wherein the metal is selected from calcium, magnesium and zinc at a given pH level, can provide a benefit in controlling sweat. The specific polymer can be stable in an aqueous composition with a specific water-soluble metallic salt at a given pH level. In addition to being stable, the combination of the specific polymer and the specific water-soluble metallic salt is capable of forming Petition 870250091661, dated 07 / 10 / 2025, pp. 35 / 71 2 / 17 precipitation / aggregation when they come into contact with an aqueous saline medium, which is equivalent to sweat, in order to prevent sweat from being rapidly released, thus absorbing or controlling excess sweat. In this way, this composition can control or manage moisture (or excess sweat) on the desired skin surface.

[004] According to a first aspect, an aqueous cosmetic composition is revealed comprising: (i) a polymer selected from polyacrylic acid, polyacrylate, polymethacrylic acid and polymethacrylate; (ii) a water-soluble metallic salt in which the metal is selected from calcium, magnesium and zinc; wherein the molecular weight of the polymer is less than 9500 g / mol; wherein the pH of the composition is from 3 to 5.5; wherein the composition comprises at least 1% of said polymer by weight of the composition.

[005] According to a second aspect, a method is disclosed for preventing the rapid release of sweat, absorbing or managing excess sweat, comprising a step of topical application of the composition of the first aspect to the desired skin surface.

[006] According to a third aspect, the use of the composition of the first aspect is revealed to prevent sweat from being released too quickly, to absorb or manage excess sweat on the desired surface of the skin.

[007] All other aspects of the present invention will become more readily apparent upon consideration of the detailed description and examples that follow.

[008] Except in examples, or where explicitly indicated otherwise, all numbers in this description that indicate quantities of material or reaction conditions, physical properties of materials and / or use Petition 870250091661, dated 07 / 10 / 2025, pp. 36 / 71 3 / 17 can optionally be understood as modified by the expression "approximately".

[009] All quantities are by weight of the composition, unless otherwise specified.

[010] It should be noted that when specifying value ranges, any particular upper value can be associated with any particular lower value.

[011] To avoid confusion, the word “that includes” is intended to mean “that includes,” but not necessarily “that consists of” or “composed of.” In other words, the steps or options listed do not need to be exhaustive.

[012] The disclosure of the invention, as found in the present document, should be considered as covering all embodiments as found in the claims as multiply dependent on each other regardless of whether the claims can be found without multiple dependency or redundancy.

[013] When an attribute is disclosed in relation to a particular aspect of the invention (for example, a composition of the invention), such disclosure is also to be considered applicable to any other aspect of the invention (for example, a method of the invention) after appropriate modifications. Detailed Description of the Invention

[014] The term "cosmetic composition," as used in this document, is understood to include a composition for topical application to the skin of mammals, especially humans. Such a composition is preferably of the no-rinse type. A no-rinse composition means a composition that is applied to the desired surface of the skin and left for one minute to 24 hours, after which it can be cleaned or Petition 870250091661, dated 07 / 10 / 2025, pp. 37 / 71 4 / 17 rinsed with water, normally during the regular course of personal washing. The composition may also be formulated into a product that is applied to a human body to enhance appearance, cleanliness, odor control, or overall aesthetics. The composition of the present invention may be in the form of a liquid, lotion, cream, gel, or stick form and may be dispensed via a roll-on type device or with the use of an aerosol container containing a propellant. The term “skin,” as used herein, is intended to include skin on any part of the body (e.g., neck, chest, back, arms, underarms, hands, legs, buttocks, and scalp), especially the underarm areas. The cosmetic composition according to the present invention is a sweat management composition that is used to provide the benefit of sweat management, which is to prevent sweat from being released rapidly, absorb or manage excess sweat on the skin's surface.

[015] Water-soluble, as used in this document, means a salt that has a solubility in water at 20 °C and 1 atm of more than 1 g of salt / 100 ml of water.

[016] The term “molecular weight”, as used in this document, refers to the weighted average molecular weight of a given polymer. The weighted average molecular weight (WAVG MW) of a given polymer can be determined by SEC (Size Exclusion Chromatography) analysis using absolute calibration (universal calibration). Polymer

[017] The polymer according to this invention is selected from polyacrylic acid, polyacrylate, polymethacrylic acid and polymethacrylate. It is preferable that the polymer be polymethacrylate. Such polymers are water-soluble and are not cross-linked.

[018] A polyacrylate is a salt or ester of polyacrylic acid. Petition 870250091661, dated 07 / 10 / 2025, pp. 38 / 71 5 / 17 When the polymer is a polyacrylate, it is preferably selected from sodium polyacrylate, potassium polyacrylate, ammonium polyacrylate and lithium polyacrylate, most preferably sodium polyacrylate.

[019] A polymethacrylate is a salt or ester of polymethacrylic acid. When the polymer is a polymethacrylate, it is preferably selected from sodium polymethacrylate, potassium polymethacrylate, ammonium polymethacrylate and lithium polymethacrylate, most preferably sodium polymethacrylate.

[020] It is more preferable that the polymer be selected low molecular weight water-soluble acrylic / methacrylic acid polymer and low molecular weight water-soluble acrylic / methacrylic acid polymer sodium salt.

[021] The polymer according to this invention has a molecular weight of less than 9500 g / mol, preferably less than 9000 g / mol, more preferably not more than 8000 g / mol. It is preferable that the polymer has a molecular weight of 2000 to 9000 g / mol, more preferably of 2000 to 8000 g / mol, and more preferably of 2000 to 6000 g / mol.

[022] The composition according to this invention comprises at least 1% of the polymer, preferably at least 2%, more preferably at least 4% of the polymer by weight of the composition.

[023] It is preferable that the composition comprise from 1 to 20% of the polymer, more preferably from 2 to 15%, even more preferably from 4 to 10% by weight of the composition. Water-Soluble Metallic Salt

[024] The water-soluble metallic salt according to this invention is a bivalent metallic salt in which the metal is selected from calcium, magnesium and zinc.

[025] The water-soluble calcium salt may be calcium chloride, Petition 870250091661, dated 07 / 10 / 2025, pp. 39 / 71 6 / 17 calcium gluconate, calcium nitrate, calcium bromide, calcium formate, calcium lactate, calcium propanoate, calcium acetate and calcium dobesilate.

[026] Water-soluble magnesium salts may be magnesium chloride, magnesium nitrate, magnesium sulfate, magnesium citrate, magnesium gluconate, magnesium acetate, magnesium lactate, and magnesium malate.

[027] Water-soluble zinc salts may be zinc chloride, zinc nitrate, zinc citrate, zinc sulfate, and zinc gluconate.

[028] It is preferable that the composition comprises at least 0.5%, more preferably at least 1%, and even more preferably at least 1.5% of the water-soluble metallic salt by weight of the composition.

[029] It is preferred that the composition comprise 0.5 to 10%, more preferably 1 to 8%, in addition, preferably 1.5 to 5% of the water-soluble metallic salt by weight of the composition. pH of the Compositions

[030] The pH of the composition of the present invention is 3 to 5.5, preferably 3 to 5, more preferably 3.5 to 4.5. Other Ingredients

[031] Other components commonly included in cosmetic compositions may also be incorporated into the compositions of the present invention. Such components include skin care agents, such as emollients, humectants and skin barrier promoters; skin appearance modifiers, such as skin lightening agents and skin softening agents; antimicrobial agents, in particular organic antimicrobial agents and preservatives.

[032] The composition may include skin actives selected from a group comprising alpha-hydroxy acids, mandelic acid, methylxanthines, alkaloids and caffeine. It is preferable that it be free of parabens. Petition 870250091661, dated 07 / 10 / 2025, pp. 40 / 71 7 / 17

[033] The compositions of the invention are applied cosmetically and topically to the skin, generally speaking, by one of two methods. Different consumers prefer one method or the other. In one method, sometimes referred to as a contact method, the composition is rubbed onto the surface of the skin, which deposits a fraction of the composition as it passes over. In the second method, sometimes referred to as the non-contact method, the composition is sprayed from a dispenser held close to the skin, often over an area of about 10 to 20 cm2. The spraying may be achieved by mechanical means of generating pressure in the contents of a dispenser, such as a pump or a compressible sidewall, or by internally generated pressure resulting from a fraction of a liquefied propellant that volatilizes the dispenser, commonly referred to as an aerosol.

[034] There are generally two classes of contact compositions, one of which is liquid and generally applied using a roll-on dispenser or possibly absorbed into or onto a wipe, and in the second of which the active ingredient is distributed within a carrier liquid that forms a continuous phase that has been gelled. In one variation, the carrier fluid comprises a solvent for the active ingredient and, in a second variation, the active ingredient remains a particulate solid that is suspended in an oil, usually a mixture of oils.

[035] The composition of the invention comprises a cosmetically acceptable aqueous carrier. The term aqueous means that the composition of the invention comprises water as the main carrier or that water constitutes an important part of the carrier. In these cases, other solvents and ingredients besides water may also be present. It is preferable that the composition comprises from 5 to 98% water, preferably from 15 to 95%, more preferably from 50 to 90%, and even more preferably from 70 to Petition 870250091661, dated 07 / 10 / 2025, pp. 41 / 71 8 / 17% by weight of the composition.

[036] It is preferable that the composition of the invention be in the form of a cream, a spray, a firm solid, a soft solid or an emulsion packaged in a roll-on type applicator.

[037] Alternatively, it is preferable that the composition be in the form of wipes. The wipes here are intended for the application of the composition. The wipes are generally made of materials such as polyester, polypropylene, cotton, wood pulp or rayon fibers formed into sheets. They may be individually wrapped or in small packages or in bulk. They are usually moistened with water, ethanol or other ingredients that help them to function. They may contain other ingredients such as preservatives to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi.

[038] It is preferable that, when the said composition is a spray, it comprises a propellant and the composition is in the form of an aerosol.

[039] More preferably, the composition of the invention is in the form of a roll-on or aerosol product.

[040] The compositions according to this invention may comprise an antiperspirant active ingredient.

[041] However, the composition of the present invention is preferably free of metal-based antiperspirant actives.

[042] The composition of the present invention is preferably free of antiperspirant actives comprising aluminum or zirconium. And the composition of the present invention is preferably free of zinc-based antiperspirant actives.

[043] Non-aluminum, non-zirconium and non-zinc antiperspirant actives may be present in the composition. The non-aluminum or zirconium, or non-zinc antiperspirant active is preferably selected from Petition 870250091661, dated 07 / 10 / 2025, pp. 42 / 71 9 / 17 glycerol monolaurate with the addition of isostearyl alcohol, chitosan or a salt thereof with an average molecular weight from 250 to 650 kDa, composed of titanium chelated by alkanolamine with an acid and a polyhydric alcohol, or a cholic acid derivative selected from a hydroxycholic acid or a salt thereof with a multivalent metal salt. Stick Compositions

[044] Many different materials have been proposed as gelling agents for a continuous oil phase, including waxes, small molecule gelling agents, and polymers. Each of these has its advantages, and among them, one of the most popular classes of gelling agents is waxes, at least in part due to their ready availability and ease of processing, which include, in particular, linear fatty alcohol wax gelling agents. A gelled composition is applied topically to the skin by rubbing it all over and in contact with the skin, thus depositing a thin film on the skin.

[045] The nature of the film depends largely on the gelling agent that is employed. Although wax fat alcohols have been used as gelling agents for many years and are effective for gelling purposes, the resulting product is quite ineffective in improving the visual appearance of the skin, and in particular the skin of the armpits, to which the composition has been applied. This problem has been solved by including improving materials, for example, di- or polyhydric humectants and / or a triglyceride oil.

[046] Stick compositions are typically available in the form of a firm solid or a soft solid. Firm solids, as the name suggests, are harder and can be applied directly using an applicator, for example, under the arms. Soft solids also require an applicator similar to those for firm solids, the difference being that soft solids are softer and the applicator needs to be... Petition 870250091661, dated 07 / 10 / 2025, pp. 43 / 71 10 / 17 designed to allow the extrusion of solids through a cap member comprising a plurality of orifices, and the extruded composition can then be applied under the arms. Roll-on type

[047] Liquid compositions that are applicable from a roll-on can generally be divided into two classes, namely, those in which an active ingredient is suspended in a hydrophobic carrier, such as a volatile silicone, and those in which the active ingredient is dissolved in a carrier liquid. The latter has proven to be more popular. There are mainly two types of dissolving carrier liquid, namely, carriers that are predominantly alcoholic, i.e., the greater part of the dissolving carrier fluid comprises ethanol, and the second class in which the carrier liquid is mainly water. The former was very popular, as ethanol is a mild bactericide in itself, but its popularity has declined, as it stings, especially if the surface on which the composition was applied was damaged or cut, such as can easily occur during shaving or other depilatory actions.

[048] The second class of formulations, which is an alternative to alcoholic formulations, comprises a dispersion of water-insoluble or very poorly water-soluble ingredients in an aqueous solution of the active ingredient. In this document, such compositions will be referred to as emulsions. Roll-on emulsions commonly comprise one or more emulsifiers to maintain a distribution of the water-soluble ingredients. Aerosol Compositions

[049] Alternatively, the composition of the invention is delivered via an aerosol composition comprising a propellant in addition to the other applicable ingredients described above in this document. Typically, the propellant is used in a weight ratio for the base formulation of 95:5 to 5:95. Depending on the propellant, in such Petition 870250091661, dated 07 / 10 / 2025, pp. 44 / 71 In 11 / 17 aerosol compositions, the propellant to base formulation ratio is typically at least 20:80, usually at least 30:70, particularly at least 40:60, and in many formulations, the weight ratio ranges from 90:10 to 50:50. A ratio range from 70:30 to 90:10 is sometimes preferred.

[050] The propellants in this document are generally one of three classes; (i) low boiling point gases liquefied by compression, (ii) volatile ethers and (iii) non-oxidizing compressed gases.

[051] Class (i) is conveniently a low-boiling-point material, typically with a boiling point below -5 °C, and frequently below -15 °C, and in particular alkanes and / or halogenated hydrocarbons. This class of propellant is normally liquefied under pressure in the aerosol can and evaporates to generate the pressure to expel the composition out of the can. Examples of suitable alkanes include, in particular, propane, butane, or isobutane. Class (ii) propellant comprises a highly volatile ether, of which the most widely employed ether to date is dimethyl ether. This propellant can advantageously be employed in a relatively low propellant-to-base formulation weight ratio, for example as low as 5:95. It can also be employed in addition mixing with, for example, compressible / liquefying alkane gases. The (iii) propellant class comprises non-oxidizing compressed gases, and in particular carbon dioxide or nitrogen. Inert gases, such as neon, are a theoretical alternative.

[052] The composition of the present invention may comprise a wide range of other optional components. The CTFA Personal Care Ingredient Handbook, Second Edition, 1992, which is incorporated herein in its entirety by reference, describes a wide variety of non-limiting personal care and pharmaceutical ingredients commonly used in the skin care industry that are suitable for use in Petition 870250091661, dated 07 / 10 / 2025, pp. 45 / 71 12 / 17 compositions of the present invention. Examples include: antioxidants, binders, biological additives, buffering agents, colorants, thickeners, polymers, astringents, fragrance, conditioners, exfoliating agents, pH adjusters, other than those previously discussed, preservatives, natural extracts, essential oils, skin sensitizers, skin soothing agents and skin healing agents.

[053] A preservative is a preferred additional component in the compositions of the invention. A preservative serves to reduce or eliminate microbial contamination of the compositions of the invention. Preservatives are typically employed at a total level of from 0.05 to 3%, preferably from 0.1 to 2%, and most preferably from 0.4 to 1%.

[054] Suitable preservatives for use with the present invention include 2-phenoxyethanol, polylysine, iodopropynyl butylcarbamate, C13 alkyl parabens, sodium benzoate, caprylyl glycol and EDTA. Particularly preferred preservatives are 2-phenoxyethanol, iodopropynyl butylcarbamate, sodium benzoate, caprylyl glycol and EDTA, and especially preferred preservatives are 2-phenoxyethanol and iodopropynyl butylcarbamate.

[055] A preferred additional component of the compositions of the invention is a fragrance. Suitable materials include conventional perfumes, such as perfume oils, and also include so-called deo-perfumes, as described in document no. EP 545,556 and other publications. The incorporation levels are preferably up to 4% by weight, particularly from 0.1% to 2% by weight and especially from 0.7% to 1.7% by weight.

[056] An antimicrobial deodorant active ingredient is a preferred additional component in the compositions of the invention. Such components serve to reduce or eliminate body odor by reducing or otherwise Petition 870250091661, dated 07 / 10 / 2025, pp. 46 / 71 13 / 17 preventing the function of microbes on the body's skin responsible for generating bad odor.

[057] The antimicrobial deodorant active ingredient can also be a preservative for the composition.

[058] When employed, the antimicrobial deodorant agent is typically incorporated into the composition from 0.01% to 3% and, particularly, from 0.03% to 0.5%.

[059] Preferred antimicrobial deodorizing agents have a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 1 mg.ml⁻¹ or less, particularly 200 mg.ml⁻¹ or less, and especially 100 mg.ml⁻¹ or less. The MIC of an antimicrobial agent is the minimum concentration of the agent required to significantly inhibit microbial growth. Inhibition is considered “significant” if an 80% or greater reduction in the growth of a Staphylococcus epidermidis inoculum is observed, relative to a control medium without an antimicrobial agent, over a period of 16 to 24 hours at 37 °C. Details of appropriate methods for determining MICs can be found in “Antimicrobial Agents and Susceptibility Testing”, C. Thornsberry, (in “Manual of Clinical Microbiology”, 5th Edition, Ed. A. Balows et al, American Society for Microbiology, Washington DC, 1991).A particularly suitable method is the Macrobroth Dilution Method, as described in Chapter 110 of the above publication (pages 1101-1111) by DF Sahm and JA Washington II. The MICs of antimicrobials suitable for inclusion in the compositions of the invention are triclosan: 0.01-10 mg.ml⁻¹ (J. Regos et al., Dermatológica (1979), 158: 72-79) and farnesol: ca. 25 mg.ml⁻¹ (K. Sawano, T. Sato and R. Hattori, Proceedings of the 17th IFSCC International Conference, Yokohama (1992) p.210-232). In contrast, ethanol and similar alkanols have MICs greater than 1 mg.ml⁻¹.

[060] Suitable organic antimicrobials are bactericidal, for example, quaternary ammonium compounds, such as salts of Petition 870250091661, dated 07 / 10 / 2025, pp. 47 / 71 14 / 17 cetyltrimethylammonium; chlorhexidine and salts thereof; and diglycerol monocaprate, diglycerol monolaurate, glycerol monolaurate, and similar materials, as described in “Deodorant Ingredients”, SAMakin and MRLowry, in “Antiperspirants and Deodorants”, Ed. K. Laden (1999, Marcel Dekker, New York). The most preferred antimicrobials for use in the compositions of the invention are polyhexamethylene biguanide salts (also known as polyaminopropyl biguanide salts), an example being Cosmocil CQ™, available from Zeneca PLC, preferably used at up to 1%, and more preferably at 0.03% to 0.3% by weight; 2',4,4'-trichloro,2-hydroxydiphenyl ether (triclosan), preferably used in up to 1% by weight of the composition, and more preferably in 0.05-0.3%; and 3,7,11-trimethyldodeca2,6,10-trienol (farnesol), preferably used in up to 1% by weight of the composition, and more preferably in up to 0.5%.

[061] Other suitable organic antimicrobial agents are transition metal chelators, as described in WO01 / 52805, for example. Transition metal chelators have a binding coefficient for iron(III) greater than 1026, for example, diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid and salts thereof are preferred. Method and Use

[062] The present invention also provides a method for preventing the rapid release of sweat, absorbing or managing excess sweat, comprising a step of topical application of the composition of the first aspect. Preferably, the present invention provides a method in which the composition of the first aspect is applied under the arms. Alternatively, it is preferable that the present invention provides a method in which the composition of the first aspect is applied to the skin of the body. The present invention also provides a method in which the topical application of the composition of the first aspect prevents sweat from being released rapidly, Petition 870250091661, dated 07 / 10 / 2025, pp. 48 / 71 15 / 17 absorbs or manages excess sweat on the desired surface of the human body's skin. The method according to the invention is preferably non-therapeutic. Non-therapeutic means that the method is purely cosmetic.

[063] The invention also provides for the use of the composition of the first aspect to prevent sweat from being released rapidly, to absorb or manage excess sweat on the desired skin surface. Preferably, the desired skin surface is the skin of the armpits. Alternatively, it is preferable that the desired skin surface be the skin of the body. The use according to the invention is preferably of a non-therapeutic nature, more preferably of a cosmetic nature.

[064] Preventing sweat from being released quickly, as used in this document, means reducing the rate of sweat release.

[065] The invention will now be demonstrated with the aid of the following non-limiting examples. Examples Examples Example 1

[066] This example demonstrated that the composition according to the invention is capable of forming an aggregation / precipitation under the test conditions. Compositions according to the formulations detailed in Table 1 are prepared. All ingredients are expressed as a percentage by weight of the total formulation and as the active ingredient level. The MW of the polymers in the table means weighted average molecular weight. [067] The composition of the model ionic sweat (pH 6.9), according to the formulation detailed in Table 2, is prepared: Table 2 Ingredient % by weight of total Potassium Chloride 0.0373 Sodium Bicarbonate 0.2025 Sodium Chloride 0.2098 Ammonium Chloride 0.0107 Calcium Chloride 0.0222 Lactic Acid 0.0901 Urea 0.0018 Water 99.4256 Experimental Methods

[068] An experiment was arranged using the device as disclosed in International Application No. WO 2018099931 A1 (Unilever).

[069] The device has a 20x20 µm channel. Before use, the channel was filled with the model's ionic sweat. The surface tension of the model's ionic sweat is strong and prevents its flow into the capillary. 20 µl of the composition in Petition 870250091661, dated 07 / 10 / 2025, pp. 50 / 71 17 / 17 of the items in Table 2 were placed at one end of the channel. When the composition comes into contact with the ionic sweat of the model, it is believed that the composition of the present invention transforms into something like an aggregation / agglomeration. This phenomenon simulates the way in which an active agent forms aggregation / agglomeration, thus providing the benefit of preventing sweat from being released quickly, absorbing or managing excess sweat in the armpit area.

[070] The entire process was monitored under an optical microscope (Leica™ DM 2500P).

[071] Data on the formation of aggregation / agglomeration of compositions at the end of the channel after 60 minutes are summarized in Table 3 below: Table 3 ABC Samples 1 2 3 4 5 Aggregation / clumping formed NNNYYYYY

[072] The results (shown in Table 3) demonstrate that the compositions according to the invention (Reference Nos. 1 to 5) are capable of forming an aggregation / precipitation under the test conditions disclosed above, which further indicates their ability to prevent sweat from being released rapidly, absorb or manage excess sweat when used in a cosmetic composition, whereas compositions outside the invention (Examples A to C) do not exhibit such effectiveness.

[073] It was also observed that with the increase in the dosage of the polymer within the scope of the invention in the composition, there was more aggregation / agglomeration formed, which indicates, therefore, a greater capacity to prevent sweat from being released quickly, to absorb or manage excess sweat when used in a cosmetic composition.
