Description
"PET BED"
[0001] The present invention relates to an animal bed and its method of production.
[0002] Pet bedding, primarily for cats, is well-known and commonly available. Its purpose is to absorb urine and fecal matter. As such, bedding consists of a suitably absorbent matrix, often based on a porous cellulosic or mineral material (typically clay). Ideally, the bedding should also mask the unpleasant odor of animal waste products, especially if the bedding remains undisturbed for some time. The traditional method for achieving this is by adding fragrance to the matrix. This can be achieved by simply adding fragrance to the basic matrix material, or it can be a more sophisticated encapsulated approach, such as those described in International Publications WO 2006 / 105680 and WO 2023 / 030855.
[0003] In some bed preparation processes involving extrusion and granulation, raw materials are mixed with water (approximately 10% by weight of the total mixture) to aid extrusion. This water must then be substantially removed, which involves heating the granulated material. This presents the problem of removing not only the water but also a substantial proportion of the fragrance, thus reducing the effectiveness of the bed. There are relatively few bed compositions that can effectively handle this.
[0004] It has now been discovered that an acceptable level of odor control performance can be achieved through a specific formulation. Therefore, an animal bedding is provided comprising (a) an animal bedding base and (b) an absorbent particle matrix to which fragrance has been added, the fragrance being characterized by (a) having weight proportions of notes of Petition 870250094118, dated 10 / 15 / 2025, page 7 / 39 2 / 18 po, averages and bases of, respectively, 35-80, 10-40 and 5-25%, (b) components with a ClogP value of less than 1.5, comprising a maximum of 3% of the fragrance, and (c) being substantially free of water-miscible solvents.
[0005] A method is further provided for preparing an animal bedding comprising an odor-neutralizing fragrance, comprising the steps of mixing the components, adding sufficient water to permit extrusion, extruding and granulating the mixture and then drying the granules, characterized in that the fragrance is added in the form of a particle matrix in which the fragrance is absorbed, and in that the fragrance is as defined above.
[0006] In particular embodiments, the weight proportions of the top, middle and base notes are respectively 40-70, 15-35 and 8-20%, more particularly 45-60%, 25-35% and 10-20%, more particularly 50-60%, 25-30% and 10-15%.
[0007] Animal bedding base refers to the basic absorbent material used to absorb waste. It is usually a cellulosic or mineral material, such as tofu, wood particles, cellulosic materials like paper, and absorbent minerals like bentonite.
[0008] The particulate absorbent matrix in which the fragrance is absorbed, before being added to the animal bedding base, may be any suitable particulate material that has the ability to absorb fragrance. Non-limiting examples include maltodextrin, calcium carbonate, beta-cyclodextrin, bentonite, talc powder, modified starches such as Hi-Cap™ 100, sodium sulfate, sodium starch octenylsuccinate such as Capsul™ E, fumed silica such as Aerosil™ 200 and mixtures thereof. Particular examples are talc powder and beta-cyclodextrin.
[0009] The term ClogP refers to the calculated logarithm of the coefficient Petition 870250094118, dated 10 / 15 / 2025, page 8 / 39 3 / 18 octanol / water partition coefficient and is a parameter commonly used in the fragrance industry. There are several methods for calculating the ClogP value, the one used in this disclosure being the one calculated by Daylight Chemical Information Systems, Inc., USA, and described in the publication: https: / / www.daylight.com / dayhtml / doc / clogp /
[0010] The terms “top notes, middle notes, and base notes” are well known to perfumers, reflecting the volatility of fragrance ingredients. In a typical fragrance, the respective weight proportions of top notes, middle notes, and base notes are 15-25%, 30-50%, and 30-50%, respectively. While these proportions are not rigid barriers and it is possible to work outside of them depending on the desired olfactory profile, it is generally known that going far beyond them will result in an unbalanced formulation that does not provide the desired olfactory effect. In the case of the present disclosure, the formulation substantially outside these normally accepted limits, in combination with the specified ClopP parameter and absorption in a particulate matrix, provides, in this specific use, highly beneficial results.
[0011] Top note fragrance ingredients may include, but are not limited to: allyl heptanoate (e.g., ALLYL OENANTATE), (Z)-hex-3-en-1-yl methyl carbonate (e.g., LIFFAROME™), pentyl butanoate (e.g., AMYL BUTYRATE), 2,6-dimethylhept-5-enal (e.g., MELONAL™); butyl 3-methylbutanoate (e.g., ISOAMYL BUTYRATE), benzaldehyde, (4S)-4,7,7-trimethyl-6-thiabicyclo[3.2.1]octane (e.g., CORPS PAMPLEMOUSSE), hexyl acetate (e.g., C6HEXYL ACETATE), (Z)-hex-3-en-1-yl acetate (e.g., HEXENYL-3-CIS ACETATE), 4-methylpent-4-en-2-yl 2-methylpropanoate (e.g., ISOPENTYRATE); 2-methyl-4-propyl-1,3-oxathione (e.g., OXANET™), 3-methylbut-2-en-1-yl acetate (e.g., ACETATE Petition 870250094118, dated 10 / 15 / 2025, page 9 / 39 4 / 18 PRENYL), 6-methylheptan-3-one (e.g. ETHYL ISOAMYL KETONE), ethyl 2-methylpentanoate (e.g. MANZANATEtm); heptan-2-one (e.g. METHYL AMYL KETONE), 3methylbutyl acetate (e.g. ISOAMYL ACETATE), ethyl 2-methylbutanoate (e.g. ETHYL METHYL-2-BUTYRATE) and ethyl butanoate (e.g. ETHYL BUTYRATE); decanal (e.g. C10 DECYL ALDEHYDE), (E)-dec-4-enal (e.g. DECENAL-4-TRANS), 3,7-dimethyloct-6-enal (e.g. CITRONELLAL), 1-phenylethanethiol (e.g. ANJERUK)™, 6,6-dimethoxy-2,5,5-trimethylhex-2-ene (e.g. METHYL PAMPLEMOUSSE), nonanal (e.g. C9 NONILIC ALDEHYDE), 4,7-dimethyloct-6-en-3-one (e.g. DIMETHYL OCTENONE), octanal (e.g. C8 OCTHYL ALDEHYDE); 3,5,5-trimethylhexanal (e.g. C9 ISONONYL ALDEHYDE); 1-methyl-4-(prop-1-en-2-yl)cyclohex-1-ene (e.g., dipentene, limonene), 1-methyl-4-(propan-2-ylidene)cyclohex-1-ene (e.g., terpinolene), heptanal (e.g., C7 heptyl aldehyde);(3E,5Z)undeca-1,3,5-triene (e.g., UNDECATRIENE), (2E,6Z)-nona2,6-dienal (e.g., NONADIENAL™); 2,4-dimethylcyclohex-3-enecarbaldehyde (e.g., TRICYCLAL), 4-vinylcyclohex-1-enecarbaldehyde (e.g., SHISOLIA™), 2,4-dimethylcyclohex-3-enecarbaldehyde (e.g., CYCLAL™), 4-methyl-2-(2-methylprop-1-en-1-yl)tetrahydro-2H-pyran (e.g., ROSA OXIDE™); (Z)hex-3-en-1-ol (e.g., HEXENOL-3-CIS), 7-methyl-3-methyleneocta1,6-diene (e.g., MYRCENE), hexan-1-ol (e.g., C6AL ALDEHYDE™) HEXYLIC); such as 3,7-dimethylocta-1,6-dien-3-yl acetate (e.g., LINALYL ACETATE), (2S,4S)-1,7,7-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-yl acetate (e.g., BORNYL ACETATE), 2-(sec-butyl)cyclohexanone (e.g., FRESKOMENTHETM), (1S,2R,4R)-1,3,3-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-ol (e.g., PHENCYL ALCOHOL), 2-isopropyl-5-methylcyclohexanone (e.g.,; Petition 870250094118, dated 10 / 15 / 2025, page 10 / 39 5 / 18 ISOMENTHONE DLTM), (2S)-1,3,3-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-yl acetate (e.g., PHENCYL ACETATE), 2,6-dimethyloct-7-en-2-ol (e.g., DIMIRCETOL), (1S,4S)1,7,7-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-one (e.g., CAMPHOR), 2-isopropyl-5-methylcyclohexanone (e.g., MENTHONETM); 1-methyl-4-propan-2-ylcyclohexa-1,4-diene (e.g., TERPINENE GAMMA), 1-methyl-4-propan-2-ylbenzene (e.g., CYMENE PARA); (1s,4s)1,3,3-trimethyl-2-oxabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (e.g. EUCALYPTOL), 2,2,6-trimethyl-6-vinyltetrahydro-2H-pyran (e.g. LIMETOLTM), 6,6-dimethyl-2-methylenebicyclo[3.1.1]heptane (e.g. PINENE BETA), 2,6,6-trimethylbicyclo[3.1.1]hept-2-ene (e.g., PINENE ALPHA); benzyl acetate (e.g., BENZYL ACETATE); methyl 2-hydroxybenzoate (e.g., METHYL SALICYLATE), 3,7-dimethyloctan3-ol (e.g., TETRAHYDRO LINALOOL), (Z)-3,4,5,6,6-pentamethylhept-3-en-2-one (e.g., KOAVONE™), 2,6-dimethyloct-7-en-2-ol (e.g., DIHYDRO MYRCENOL), 3,7-dimethylocta-1,6-dien-3-ol (e.g., LINALOOL), 2-(2-hydroxypropan-2-yl)-5-methylcyclohexanol (e.g., GERANODYLET™); 1-phenylethanone (e.g., acetophenone), 2,6-dimethylheptan-2-ol (e.g., dimethol), methyl benzoate (e.g., methyl benzoate); 1-methoxy-4-methylbenzene (e.g., cresyl methyl ether paramethylbenzene); and mixtures thereof.

and mixtures thereof.
[0015] It will be understood that the boundaries between the three categories of top, middle and base notes are not rigidly defined, and some interpretations would place some ingredients in different classes.
[0016] The weight proportion of the fragrance in the finished bed varies from 0.01% to 5%, more specifically from 0.05% to 2.5% and, more specifically, from 0.09% to 1.5%.
[0017] In addition to the matrix material and fragrance, they can also be added to the well-known auxiliary ingredients of the bed. Petition 870250094118, dated 10 / 15 / 2025, p. 20 / 39 15 / 18 in the art of bedding manufacturing. These include auxiliary binding materials such as guar gum, xanthan gum, carrageenan, and locust bean gum. These may be present in a weight proportion of up to 5% of the bedding. Preservatives may also be included. Any of the preservatives and antibacterial agents recognized in the art may be used, for example, sodium benzoate, persimmon tannins, enzymes such as Prefur™, typically at a level of 0.05 to 1.5% by weight of the total bedding.
[0018] The bedding is prepared by first preparing the scented particulate material, mixing the fragrance and the matrix material. This is then added to the animal bedding base, mixing all the ingredients, adding enough water to allow extrusion, and then granulating the extruded material to the desired size, typically in the range of 0.2 to 0.3 mm in diameter and 0.5 to 1.5 cm in length. The granulated material is then heated in an oven, typically at 120°C for 30 minutes, in order to remove the water and produce a finished bedding.
[0019] The animal bedding prepared as described above has exceptionally long-lasting fragrance and odor suppression properties.
[0020] The revelation is now described in more detail with reference to the following examples, which depict particular concretizations and are in no way intended to be limiting. All proportions are by weight.
[0021] Example 1
[0022] (a) Fragrance formulation:
[0023] A fragrance was formulated according to the following formula: No. Ingredient Percentage (%) 1 ACETOIN CRYSTALS 20 Petition 870250094118, dated 10 / 15 / 2025, p. 21 / 39 16 / 18 2 ETHYL BUTYRATE 15 3 ETHYL CAPRYLATE 15 4 DECALACTONE DELTA 5 5 BENZYL DECALACTONE 3 6 BENZYL BENZOATE 1 7 ETHYL MALTOL 16 8 ETHYL VANILLIN 14 7 HYDROXYETHYL METHYL THIAZOLE 1 8 OCTALACTONE GAMMA 5 9 PRUNOLIDE™ 5 TOTAL 100
[0024] This formula contained 50% of top-rated ingredients, 40% of ingredients were of medium grade and 10% of ingredients were of base grade. The proportion of top-grade ingredients with a flash point below 150°C and a vapor pressure above 0.2 μg / L was 100%.
[0025] (b) Preparation of particulate matrix material
[0026] The following materials were used:
[0027] Fragrance (from (a) above) 30%
[0028] Talc 20%
[0029] Aerosil™ 200 50% Pyrogenic Silica
[0030] Talc was added to a mixing container and the fragrance was sprayed onto it, while stirring. Then, fumigated silica was added, the mixture was stirred well and left to mature overnight before use.
[0031] (c) Cat bedding preparation with scented particulate matrix material
[0032] The base of the cat bed consisted of pea fiber, corn starch (CAS 9005-25-8), corn powder (CAS 68525-86-0) and Petition 870250094118, dated 10 / 15 / 2025, page 22 / 39 17 / 18 guar gum (CAS 9000-30-0).
[0033] The proportions of the cat bed were as follows:
[0034] pea fiber 36%
[0035] corn starch 27%
[0036] corn powder 22.5%
[0037] guar gum 4.32%
[0038] sodium benzoate 0.09%
[0039] scented particulate matrix material 0.09% (of (c) above)
[0040] To this mixture, in a mixer, 10% water was added, the mixture was thoroughly mixed, extruded and granulated. The extruded product was transferred to an oven and heated to 120°C for 30 minutes to evaporate the water from the cat litter. The dried material was sieved to provide a product with a particle size of 0.2-0.3 mm in diameter and 1-1.5 cm in length.
[0041] (d) Preparing the bed with normal fragrance
[0042] The bed preparation mentioned above was repeated with fragrance (a) being replaced by an equal proportion of a normally formulated fragrance, with a top / middle / base note ratio of 20 / 50 / 30.
[0043] (e) Comparison of Beds
[0044] The comparison was made between beds (c) and (d) above and a sample of the bed base without any fragrance.
[0045] In each case, the samples were tested by a panel of trained testers, who rated the samples on a scale of 0 (no bad odor) to 5 (strong bad odor) for the intensity of the bad odor and on a scale of 0 (no fragrance) to 5 (strong fragrance) for the intensity of the fragrance.
[0046] Urine bad odor test
[0047] 50 g of the three prepared litters were treated with the Petition 870250094118, dated 10 / 15 / 2025, page 23 / 39 18 / 18 injections of 800 μI of a commercially available synthetic product for detecting urine odor were administered. Subsequently, they were evaluated as described above.
[0048] 10 g of deionized water were added to each litter and shaken 10 times to agglutinate the base. The litters were aged for 2 minutes before reassessing the intensity of the bad odor and the intensity of the fragrance.
[0049] The results are presented graphically in Figures 1 and 2, respectively.
[0050] Fecal odor test
[0051] The procedure described above for the urine foul odor test was repeated with 50 g from the three litters being injected with 100 μl of a commercially available standard synthetic fecal odor as a foul odor source.
[0052] The results are presented in Figures 3 and 4, respectively.
[0053] It can be clearly observed that the use of a fragrance formulated as described above, incorporated into a particulate matrix, provides superior results in suppressing bad odor.
