[0025] The following detailed description sets forth examples of devices, methods, and systems relating to hinge configurations for an electronic device. Features such as structure(s), function(s), and / or characteristic(s), for example, are described with reference to an exemplary deployment for convenience; multiple examples may be deployed with any one or more of the appropriate described features.
[0026] Traditionally, there are tablet-type computer devices and associated devices with minimal integration. For example, tablet-type computer devices typically use Universal Serial Bus (USB) connector slots, Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card trays, and audio jacks. These elements often consume valuable surface space on the tablet-type computer and additionally occupy internal real estate. The connectors are typically Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 15 / 99 5 / 42 located in areas on the device that are not ideal for unobtrusive connections. Whenever possible, elements should be consolidated or integrated in order to conserve space. As with all consumer electronic circuitry, durability and performance are of paramount importance. Connectors positioned on any computing device should enhance durability and not interfere with user activity.
[0027] In a particular example, the present disclosure design may integrate a USB connector assembly and a SIM assembly in a compact volume space. Additionally, the design may provide a rigid flexible cable assembly that connects the USB module to a tablet-type computer board. The design may also provide a connector location on the device that improves connector longevity. In a particular deployment, the USB connector assembly / SIM assembly and the audio jack may include a rigid flexible cable assembly that connects the module to the tablet-type computer board.
[0028] The particular examples described in this document may also provide an electronic device, such as a notebook computer, an Ultrabook™, a laptop computer, a cell phone (or smartphone of any kind) or other mobile device that includes a circuit board coupled to a plurality of electronic components (which include any type of components, elements, circuit assemblies, etc.). The electronic device may also include a base portion and a portion of Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 16 / 99 6 / 42 top attached to the base portion in a hinge configured so that the base portion and the top portion can rotate between an open configuration of the electronic device and a closed configuration of the electronic device (and maintain positions relative to each other at points between open and closed). Certain examples presented in this document may offer an effective hinge and docking capability that provides flexibility and orientation connection to allow more extensive integration between the electronic device (e.g., a tablet-type computer) and an accessory (e.g., a keyboard, an audio system, a movie playback system, a docking station, an accessory case, etc.).
[0029] The electronic device may also include a hinge assembly for selectively attaching (e.g., based on a desired configuration) a top portion of the electronic device to an accessory. The hinge assembly must allow rotation of the top portion relative to the accessory. The hinge assembly includes one or more discs to receive one or more segments of the accessory, as the hinge assembly engages to attach the top portion of the electronic device to the accessory. In more particular examples, the hinge assembly includes a disc sprocket to receive one or a plurality of accessory segments in order to attach the top portion to the accessory. Additionally, the accessory may include one or more rib segments to provide an alignment function, as the hinge assembly of the Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 17 / 99 7 / 42 The device engages with the fitting (which provides increased resistance and rigidity to that area of the fitting). In an example that includes magnets in that particular region of the fitting, these rib segments may provide the additional function of focusing the magnetic force of the magnets. Additionally, the fitting may include a tooth (or a plurality of tooth features) to provide resistance to rotational movement between the hinge assembly and the fitting, allowing them to maintain their relative positions without user interaction. Additionally, the fitting may include one or more magnetic strips that attract one or more rings provided on the top portion.
[0030] In one example, the accessory attachment features of the accessory do not include magnets. Instead, the device may be retained by the accessory at the hinge connection point by the accessory attachment features of the electronic device with a mechanical adjustment retention over the center (or other type).
[0031] In other examples, an electronic device is provided which includes a hinge assembly for selectively attaching a top portion of the electronic device to an accessory. The hinge assembly must allow rotation of the top portion relative to the accessory, and the hinge assembly includes at least one three-piece (or four-piece, five-piece, etc.) adjustment configuration that must provide a holding force between the top portion and the accessory. Power signals may be run separately through each of the three Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 18 / 99 8 / 42 pieces of the three-piece adjustment configuration. Alternatively, power signals may be run through one middle piece of the three-piece adjustment configuration, and the other two pieces of the three-piece adjustment configuration may be isolating. The accessory may be a keyboard that includes a one-piece side keyboard adjustment, and a plurality of slots may be provided to allow independent movement of external keyboard adjustment strips. ASSEMBLY OF CONNECTOR FOR ELECTRONIC DEVICE
[0032] Figure 1A is a simplified schematic diagram illustrating an example of an electronic device 10 in an open configuration according to an example of the present disclosure. The electronic device 10 may include a base portion 16, comprising a keyboard 12, a touchpad 18, and a top portion 14, comprising a display 26 and one or more discs 15. The display 26 may be disposed within / above and / or supported by the top portion 14. In one or more examples, the display 26 is a screen which may be a liquid crystal display (LCD) display screen, a light-emitting diode (LED) display screen, an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display screen, a plasma display screen, or any other suitable display screen system.
[0033] In one or more examples, electronic device 10 is a notebook computer or a laptop computer. In still other examples, electronic device 10 may be any suitable electronic device that has a display such as a Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 19 / 99 9 / 42 mobile device, a tablet computer and / or a tablet-type computer device (e.g., an iPad™), a personal digital assistant (PDA), a smartphone (an iPhone™, Android™, etc.), an audio system, a movie player of any kind, a computer docking station, etc.
[0034] In general terms, the electronic device 10 can offer a suitably comfortable grip for an end user to manipulate the base portion 16 (e.g., to separate it from the top portion 14). The electronic device 10 can also include one or multiple discs 15 that enable an integrated detachable accessory solution from a mechanical, electrical, and aesthetic standpoint. The accessory strip design feature can provide mechanical and magnetic guiding and attraction force for retention during attachment. Additionally, the electronic device 10 can use a mechanical adjustment feature to easily attach, retain, and detach any accessory. The power of the electronic device 10 can be physically isolated from its chassis and / or, additionally, can be integrated within one or more of its disc mounts.Furthermore, the electronic device 10 may offer a connection that allows power and / or data to flow between the device and the accessory (e.g., keyboard) to which it is connected. Additionally, the electronic device 10 may offer a space-saving integration of a connection mechanism that resides inside the volume. Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 20 / 99 10 / 42 of the disk feature. Additionally, the electronic device 10 can offer an improved range of motion for the display when the device is oriented in laptop mode, as detailed below.
[0035] The electronic device 10 may also include a middle portion that is provided between the base portion 16 and the top portion 14. The middle portion may aesthetically cover a portion of the hinges 15 (or be close to multiple hinges 15) that exist between the base portion 16 and the top portion 14. The hinges 15 may define a geometric axis of rotation that is shared between the base portion 16 and the top portion 14. In one example, the base portion 16 and the top portion 14 are hinged together by means of one or more hinges 15 (as shown).
[0036] In the particular example shown in Figure 1A, the electronic device 10 is a relatively thin and agile tablet-type computer that has a touch-sensitive screen (e.g., a 25.4-centimeter (10-inch) screen) and a detachable and reattachable keyboard accessory. The electronic device 10 provides an integrated device that may include a display section (containing batteries installed with a main logic board and a cylinder) and a keyboard section. Additionally, its hinge mechanism allows the display section to be attached to the keyboard in two different orientations: with the display facing inwards and with the display facing outwards. This mechanism may provide multiple modes (possible configurations), such as Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 21 / 99 11 / 42 a laptop mode, a tablet-type computer mode, a movie mode (as well as a closed mode) for a user. All these settings are discussed below with reference to various Figures that further illustrate some of the operational capabilities associated with the electronic device 10.
[0037] For the particular magnetic keyboard project, it should be noted that the keyboards currently available for tablet computers do not offer an adequate user experience. Typing on glass is ergonomically uncomfortable, and separately, typical Bluetooth keyboards are thick and heavy. In contrast to these flawed systems, the keyboard option for the electronic device 10 can provide a user experience that replicates a more traditional computer keyboard experience. Additionally, from the user's perspective, the key navigation looks like a common computer keyboard (for example, a navigation might be approximately 0.5 mm by 2.5 mm on a traditional computer keyboard, but it looks the same). Furthermore, there is sufficient separation between the keys to make it easier for touch typists to distinguish between keys for enhanced touch typing.
[0038] In one particular example, the keyboard is an ultra-thin (e.g., 3.30 mm), ultra-light (e.g., 275 grams) keyboard with sufficient rigidity and keyboard band resistance to serve as a tablet-type computer device cover. The keyboard may be made of a laminated construction that uses variations Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, p. 22 / 99 12 / 42 key and magnet design formats to replicate a touch-typing user experience with the feel of a typical computer keyboard. In order to take into account the thinner side areas of the keyboard device, the keyboard edge keys can be pivoted on one side and, additionally, can have magnets only on one side in a particular example of the present disclosure. The keys can be of any suitable type as toggle operation keys, for example, with an arrow key operation integrating four keys that cannot be moved diagonally. A magnet can be provided in various locations on the keyboard (e.g., away from the center of the keys).
[0039] In operation, the spacing between the keyboard keys can allow a touch typist to easily distinguish between keys with their fingers. Edge keys can be specially designed for thinner sides and additionally utilize variable magnet configurations. An edge key configuration allows keys to sit over the edge of the support base to accommodate the thinner sides of the keyboard device. Magnets can be positioned appropriately to minimize the toggle effect. The toggle key configuration is used with arrow keys.
[0040] For magnetic keys, the use of magnets embedded in the keys and attracted to a ferrous top plate above the sides of the keys can provide the user with the key navigation feel and rigidity of a traditional computer keyboard. The keyboard can also Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 23 / 99 13 / 42 provide a physical key access that confirms key press. In certain implementations, the keyboard keys are magnetically tilted upwards with electronically conductive blocks under the keys, which triggers a key press. For the actual keyboard construction, a laminated construction may be employed in conjunction with an injection mold, wherein the metal is integrated into the plastic. A flexible printed circuit board (FPC) may also be used in certain embodiments of the present disclosure. Connections may be formed for the strips and a small battery may optionally be inserted into the keyboard to provide a limited backup power supply. In a non-limiting example, the dimensions of the tablet-type computer keyboard are approximately: 261.40 mm (X) x 170.16 mm (Y) x 3.30 mm (Z, key surface from top to bottom).Other examples of keyboards may include any suitable dimensions, sizes, and shapes: all of which are encompassed by the present disclosure.
[0041] It should be noted that any number of connectors (e.g., Universal Serial Bus (USB) connectors (e.g., according to the USB 3.0 Specification, or any other version), Thunderbolt™ connectors, WiFi connectors, a non-standard connection point such as a plug-in connector, etc.) and a plurality of antennas may be provided in conjunction with the electronic device 10. [Thunderbolt™ and the Thunderbolt logo are registered trademarks of Intel Corporation in the U.S. and / or other Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 24 / 99 [14 / 42 countries]. Antennas are reflectors of electrical components that can convert electrical currents into radio waves. In particular examples, antennas can be associated with WiFi activities, wireless connections more generally, small cellular installations, Bluetooth, 802.11, etc.
[0042] In one example, the board (e.g., a motherboard) of electronic device 10 is a general circuit board that can hold various components of the electronic device's internal electronic system. The components may include a central processing unit (CPU), memory, etc. The board may also be connected to one or more connectors in order to accommodate other peripherals sought for use by a user of electronic device 10. More specifically, the board may provide the electrical connections by which the other system components can communicate.
[0043] Any processors (including digital signal processors, microprocessors, supporting chipsets, etc.), memory elements, etc. can be suitably coupled to the board based on particular configuration needs, processing demands, computer designs, etc. Other components such as external storage, controllers for video display devices, sound and peripherals can be attached to the board as input cards, via cables or integrated into the board itself. Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 25 / 99 15 / 42
[0044] It should be noted that particular examples of the present disclosure may readily include a system-on-a-chip (SOC) central processing unit (CPU) package. An SOC stands for an integrated circuit (IC) that integrates components of a computer or other electronic system onto a single chip. It may contain digital, analog, mixed-signal, and often radio frequency functions: all of which may be provided on a single chip substrate.
[0045] In a particular example, the touchpad 18 is a pointing device that includes a tactile sensor, a specialized surface that can translate the movement and position of a user's fingers to a relative position on the screen. The touchpad 18 can be used in place of a mouse (for example, where workspace is limited or based on user preference). The touchpad 18 can operate using capacitance sensitivity technology, conduction sensitivity, or any other appropriate sensitivity technology. In a particular example, a suitable battery can be provided near the touchpad 18 in order to enhance its operations. Additionally, either surface (or both surfaces) of the display 26 can be a touch-sensitive display using any of the technologies discussed in this document.
[0046] Turning quickly to Figure 1B, Figure 1B is a simplified schematic diagram illustrating a side view of the electronic device 10 in a closed configuration. In operation, when the electronic device 10 is in a closed position, the Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 26 / 99 The 16 / 42 thin plastic keyboard can protect the display. When the display section is flipped up to an open position, it operates in a traditional laptop orientation (i.e., a keyboard resting on a surface with a display held in a vertical position). In one particular example, the electronic device 10 includes a full-size keyboard with an 18.5 mm reach that provides an ideal touch typing experience. When the display section is flipped upside down to face away from the keyboard key elements, the electronic device 10 can operate in a tablet-type computer configuration with the keyboard nestled behind the screen and out of the user's interaction path. Its cylinder-shaped hinge mechanism can serve as an ideal grip for the end user. In this mode, the keyboard can be stored behind the display. In tablet-type computer mode, the display can still be flipped up.In this mode, the keyboard can operate as a stand (behind the display) and the device can become a stationary display (e.g., movie mode). When the display section is detached from the keyboard, it can function as a simple, lightweight tablet computer on its own.
[0047] In the case where the electronic device accessory 10 is a keyboard, then the main keyboard components may include several elements. For example, the keyboard may include a keyboard body reflecting a single molded part that may use insert and / or co-molding methods to eliminate Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 27 / 99 17 / 42 visible grippers. Additionally, the keyboard body may include additional insert-molded tape features to provide rigidity to the outer portion of the shell geometry as well as transmit rotational loads, which prevent the top portion 14 from rotating relative to the bottom portion 16. One or more tape features are also provided that can provide magnetic attraction of the ferrous disc-shaped features of the tablet computer. Electrical current may be passed from the tablet computer to the keyboard to recharge a built-in battery or capacitor, or to provide power to any number of items (e.g., a Bluetooth radio).Additionally, the tablet computer can be properly anchored to the keyboard to prevent a toothed disc feature from rotating relative to the keyboard, while still allowing the tablet computer to rotate concentrically on the keyboard's "shell" portion via one or more engagement elements on the tablet computer.
[0048] For actual keys, in a particular non-limiting example, the keys are configured with a travel distance of 0.5 mm (for individual keys). Additionally, tactile feedback may be provided (e.g., 70 grams with a sudden drop force deflection feel) to mimic the typing experience of traditional keyboards. In certain deployments, there is little (or no) dead space on the key surface. There may be several types of keys on the keyboard. For example, the keyboard may include pivoting keys (e.g., left edge: tilde, Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 28 / 99 18 / 42 tab, caps lock, shift, left ctrl; right edge: backspace, backslash, enter, shift), rocker keys such as arrow keys and substantially vertical navigation keys such as function keys and other keys that are not along the right or left edge, etc.
[0049] The electronic device 10 may also include a non-ferrous web that provides sufficient rigidity to the keyboard body. The web may provide a guide for the keys to move vertically, but appropriately restrict xy movement. Additionally, a ferrous top plate may increase the rigidity of the keyboard, prevent the keys from falling off, and attract the magnetic keys to tilt them upwards.
[0050] In terms of Bluetooth capability, power can reach the radio by passing current through the strips / socket. The tablet-type computer may include electrically shielded (but hot) toothed discs. The Bluetooth radio circuit board may have a direct current (DC) rectifier to supply power to the electronic circuitry regardless of the tablet-type computer's orientation (i.e., laptop mode versus tablet-type computer mode, etc.).
[0051] In certain examples, the electronic device design 10 may allow a tablet-type computer to connect to the keyboard in both a laptop-type mode and a tablet-type computer mode, in addition to a vertical film stand-type mode. The viewing angle adjustment range is continuous (e.g., extending between 0 Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 29 / 99 19 / 42 and 125°, or 150°, or more, or different ranges may be provided). 0° may correspond to the fully closed position, while 125° or similar may be defined as fully open. There are two socket modules built into the tablet-type computer side of the device, which are magnetically attracted to the nesting features built into the keyboard. Figure 1C is a simplified schematic diagram illustrating an example of the electronic device 10 in a closed configuration with an accessory cover attached according to an example of the present disclosure.
[0052] Figures 1D to 1E are simplified schematic diagrams illustrating an example of a USB connector assembly, which is usually indicated by an arrow 25. A particular example includes a USB connector 23, a SIM card 29, and a flexible printed circuit board (FPC) 31. As illustrated in Figure 1D, a preload clamping post 27 is also provided to the USB connector assembly 25. In a particular example, the SIM card 29 is mounted on the USB assembly. The SIM card can be easily accessed, even though it is hidden within the housing of the electronic device. As with the case of a mobile phone, the user can access the SIM card, but it is encased and protected in an appropriate manner.
[0053] It should be noted that SIM card 29 represents an integrated circuit, which can securely store an identifier (e.g., International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI)) and / or the related key used to associate any user with a device. In more specific examples, the SIM can identify and Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 30 / 99 20 / 42 authenticate subscribers on computing devices (e.g., tablet computers, laptops, Ultrabooks™, mobile phones, smartphones, etc.). The SIM card 29 can be transferred between different mobile devices. Additionally, the SIM card 29 can contain its unique serial number (ICCID), security authentication and encryption information, temporary local network-related information, a list of services the user has access to, passwords, etc.
[0054] In one example, the USB connector assembly 25 may include a SIM card clamping mechanism, which may offer a lower profile for the attached hardware. The clamping mechanism may use the cylinder of the electronic device and a compression member (e.g., a clamping post preload 27), which pushes against the cylinder of the outer plate (when mounted) to ensure an electrical connection between the SIM card and the SIM card frame contacts. In operation, the preload clamping post 27 (which may be a simple button, a ripple, a knob, any tilt or spring-loaded component, etc.) may tilt the center of the SIM card as the SIM card clamping mechanism is inserted into the housing of a given device. In one example, as the SIM card clamping mechanism is slid into the cylinder, the button is pressed against the inner wall of the cylinder, which transfers a force to the SIM card that is subsequently pressed into the frame. This creates a clamping mechanism. Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 31 / 99 Integrated low-profile 21 / 42. During operation, the SIM card must be pressed against the contacts for the SIM card to function. Consequently, the SIM card clamping mechanism represents a way to effectively position the SIM card in its frame to ensure proper contact.
[0055] The pre-charge clamping post 27 may also be part of a disassembly locking mechanism. This provides a mechanism for servicing / accessing the SIM card. Consequently, the SIM card 29 is provided with a hidden (but accessible) locking mechanism, along with an FPC with a service circuit, which provides for the removal of the integrated USB / SIM assembly. In a particular example, the USB connector assembly 25 (also referred to as a USB module, as discussed in this document) is located within the outer plate part of the electronic device cylinder. The module may contain USB connector 23, the PCB, the clamping mechanism for the SIM card and an interposing element 35.
[0056] In one example, a rigid flexible cable assembly connects the module to a tablet-type computer board. The geometry of the flexible cable and the way it is bent are such that they form a single circuit that is inside a pocket within the module. Thus, the electrical connection to the device board is maintained consistently. The circuit allows the flexible cable to be unfolded when the module is partially removed from the outer board cylinder for SIM card service. Additionally, the element of Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 32 / 99 22 / 42 Interposition 35 is a vertically conductive material (e.g., 0.8 mm thick). This can provide the electrical connection between the module PCB and the SIM card. A SIM card can be positioned inside a special keyed pocket and then pressed against the Interposition 35 element by the clamping mechanism. The clamping can be activated by inserting the module into the cylinder.
[0057] Figures 1F to 1G are schematic diagrams illustrating an exemplary insertion of the USB connector assembly 25 into a computing device housing (e.g., a tablet computer, a laptop, a mobile device of any type, etc.). Figure 1G illustrates the USB connector assembly 25 that has been removed. Figure 1G also illustrates an independent latch assembly 39 and a related latch mechanism 33, which may or may not be spring-loaded. For example, a small hole may be provided at the top of the latch mechanism 33 to house a spring that assists in tilting the latch downwards. The latch mechanism 33 may be manipulated (e.g., lifted by a tool, a paperclip, etc.) in order to release the USB assembly. In one example, the USB assembly may slide in one direction off the board (to the right, in this illustration of Figure 1G).
[0058] Also illustrated in Figure 1G is a lathe clamp mechanism 37. The lathe clamp mechanism 37 provides a selectively engageable clamping mechanism for retaining one or more ferrous rings on the outer plate 41. The ferrous rings 41 may include a Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 33 / 99 23 / 42 plurality of balls (which are pushed radially outwards), a rotating locking cam ring that holds the balls in the outward position when mounted, and a timing feature that aligns with the USB / SIM assembly to prevent the locking cam ring from rotating when mounted. It should be noted that this element can be eliminated by removing the vise clamp and replacing it with adjusting rings to retain the outer plate's ferrous ring. In operation, the USB connector assembly 25 can be secured inside the cylinder by the locking mechanism 33. Access to the locking mechanism may be located out of sight, behind the sprocket / ferrous strip assembly. To remove the USB module, an operator can reach the area behind the sprocket assembly and then press the lock with a small flathead screwdriver (or similar tool).
[0059] The same outer plate cylinder that contains the USB module can also contain the sprocket / ferrous strip support assembly. The assembly can be secured by a vise-type clamp design that is actuated by a 60-degree turn of a pressure cushion. A cushion can be rotated by a tool such as a flathead screwdriver, for example. Once rotated to the position where it locks the assembly, the cushion is timed by the extension of the USB module, which locks a timing cut in the cushion as the USB module is inserted. When the USB module is removed, the pressure cushion is allowed to be rotated to the position where it releases the engagement assembly. Once the Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 34 / 99 24 / 42 coupling assembly is released, it can be removed, part by part, and the battery can be serviced.
[0060] Figure 1H is a simplified schematic diagram illustrating an audio jack 45 according to an example of the present disclosure. The audio jack 45 can receive any suitable audio input, media, etc. Additionally, the audio jack 45 may include a spring-loaded contact 43 in a particular example. In a particular embodiment, the audio jack connector is located on the outer plate cylinder, opposite the one containing the USB connector assembly. Its configuration may be similar to that of the USB module (in terms of mounting and electrical connectors to the plate). However, it is not intended to be user-removable. In the operation of an exemplary scenario, after the audio jack module is installed, it also serves as a resting block for the outer plate end of the shaft sprocket.
[0061] In a particular implementation, the audio jack is mounted concentrically with the cylinder, wherein the audio jack assembly slides into the cylinder from the opposite end of the USB mount. The audio jack may be held in place by a specialized retention mechanism (e.g., a nut that receives objects (e.g., screws, fasteners, etc.) from the inside of the cylinder portion). The audio jack assembly may also provide an electrical conductivity path between the toothed disc and the housing. The spring-loaded contact 43 is Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 35 / 99 25 / 42 supplied in the assembly and, additionally, can be loaded against the shaft of the engagement mechanism. The toothed disc is electrically conductive, although it is isolated from the chassis. In a particular example, an electrical path is defined from the toothed disc, through the engagement shaft, and through the spring-loaded contact 43, which can be seen as a post that provides a proper connection to the PCB of the audio jack assembly.
[0062] In one embodiment, an adjustment ring is used as a safety mechanism. The adjustment ring can be received or captured by the audio jack and additionally join with an internal feature of a ferrous ring. Conceivably, the adjustment ring could join with a feature on the inner wall of the circular recess (cylinder) to provide support for the ferrous ring and to prevent the audio jack from falling; however, this method does not provide audio jack operability as the other embodiments provide, as discussed in this document.
[0063] Figure 2 is a simplified schematic diagram illustrating an orthographic view of an electronic device 10 that is separated into two segments. Figure 3 is a simplified schematic diagram illustrating an orthographic view of the electronic device when the two segments are connected together. With the momentary focus on the disc coupling, the specific design of an electronic device 10 integrates the coupling element that resides inside. Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 36 / 99 26 / 42 of the volume of the electronic device's disk resources and, additionally, saves space by incorporating disk elements into the engagement (i.e., a sprocket). In general, the design and mounting mechanism allows the tablet-type computer disk sub-assembly to be installed in a slot in the tablet-type computer enclosure that is narrower than the disk sub-assembly in the installed configuration of the same. The actual disk can be designed with an electrical power connection that is physically isolated from the chassis. Additionally, the electronic device 10 offers a voltage engagement integration with a disk sprocket feature in the center (or other location) of the disk feature in the electronic device (e.g., for improved motion range, more compact size, position holding capabilities, and better torque transition characteristics).
[0064] The magnetic band segments in the accessory (e.g., the keyboard) can attract the ferrous rings of tablet-type computer disks. The central rib (discussed in detail below) provides amplified magnetic resistivity focused on the band. During an insertion of a top portion 14 into a bottom portion 16, the central sprocket features of the tablet-type computer disk, which are connected to the coupling, engage the tooth in the center of the accessory shell. The central rib of the accessory shell can serve to provide a proper alignment guide function. The coating can provide a Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 37 / 99 27 / 42 directional focus for the magnetic field. In one particular example, a coupling with bidirectional uniform torque properties is provided in the disc. This can allow a top portion 14 to be inserted into a bottom portion 16 in both orientations and additionally provide uniform resistance to motion. This is in contrast to a typical standard laptop coupling, which may provide less resistance in one direction or variable resistance based on the angle between the screen and the keyboard.
[0065] Figure 4 is a simplified orthographic view of a disk groove 40 of an electronic device 10. In this particular example, the disk groove 40 may be in the range of 1.0 to 3.5 millimeters, although alternative examples may have any other suitable dimension. Figure 5 is a simplified schematic diagram illustrating an orthographic view of a potential accessory of an electronic device 10, according to an exemplary deployment. This particular example includes symmetrical segments 50a and 50b that may generate a suitable coupling for a given accessory. For example, an accessory, such as a keyboard, when affixed, becomes integrated to allow power to flow between the tablet-type computer disk mechanism and the keyboard, thereby powering the Bluetooth radio incorporated in the keyboard.
[0066] Figure 6 is a simplified schematic diagram illustrating an orthographic view of an accessory socket 60 of the electronic device 10 according to an example of the present disclosure. The socket Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 38 / 99 Accessory 60 28 / 42 can provide a suitable guiding / driving feature during connection activities. Figure 7 is a simplified schematic diagram illustrating the underside of the accessory band components associated with an electronic device 10. The magnetic components 70 on the opposite side (and installed on the band) can be accompanied by a suitable support (e.g., a steel support) to reduce undesirable stray magnetic fields. Without such support, magnetic forces may have an increased probability of interacting with other components, altering credit card information, corrupting certain storage elements, etc. The band / keyboard format and tablet-type computer transition may allow a cam release from the tablet-type computer from the keyboard with the use of the tablet-type computer as a lever to overcome the strong magnetic pulling force of the connection. The magnetic pull from the keyboard to the tablet computer can ensure both electrical contact and a mechanical connection between the keyboard bands and the tablet computer. The coupling assembly can be electrically isolated from the tablet computer and keyboard casings to allow positive and negative connections between the tablet computer and the keyboard via the two couplings. The physical contact of the toothed wheel features of the tablet computer's disk elements to the torque-transmitting teeth of the keyboard bands allows electrical power and / or signals to pass from the computer to the tablet computer. Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 39 / 99 29 / 42 tablet type to keyboard. The toothed disc can properly transmit torque from the keyboard to the tablet-type computer. Additionally, certain examples may use a plastic-housed engagement element to electrically isolate the toothed disc from the chassis.
[0067] Figure 8 is a simplified schematic diagram illustrating an orthographic view of the keyboard electronics and magnetic bands 80 with the surrounding keyboard housing removed. Figure 9 illustrates a keyboard housing 90 with the associated keyboard electronics and magnetic bands removed. Figure 10 is a simplified schematic diagram illustrating a hinge assembly 100 associated with the electronic device 10. Figures 11 to 14 are simplified schematic diagrams illustrating certain hinge assembly components 110 / 120 / 130 / 140 associated with the electronic device 10. The design and mounting mechanism of the electronic device 10 allows the mounting of the tablet-type computer disk in a slot that is smaller than the mounted disk. Figure 15 is a simplified schematic diagram illustrating a potential design arrangement 150 associated with the present disclosure.
[0068] In the operation of one example, there is a three-piece fitting for retention purposes. Power signals can propagate through each of the three pieces separately. In addition, power signals can extend through the middle piece, where the two outer pieces act as insulators. A keyboard side fitting may be provided with a piece in which slots are Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, p. 40 / 99 30 / 42 used to allow independent motion of the external adjustment bands and the internal torque gripping band / tooth. In other implementations, a one-piece fit can be provided without separating the three sections. It should be noted that any suitable plastic, fiber-reinforced plastic, or highly elastic metal (e.g., titanium) can be used in such examples. It should also be noted that for one-piece fits, three-piece fits, and magnetic retention, they can be implemented without an engagement mechanism on the electronic device. For example, instead of using an engagement mechanism, the electronic device and the attachment can be held in an angular position relative to each other (e.g., with the friction of their respective cylindrical bonding surfaces).
[0069] In certain examples, the engagement mechanism must not be internal to the device discs (for example, they may be in the area shown as being occupied by the batteries in certain Figures). In essence, any engagement mechanism may be used in order to accommodate the teachings of the present disclosure. Additionally, the frictional forces must not be equal in both directions in certain examples of the present disclosure.
[0070] For the current assembly, one of the ferrous steel bands can be mounted with torque insertion and then inserted into the tablet-type computer by sliding it into the center cylinder section with the second ferrous steel band presented loosely by the center toothed disc, which has an outer diameter Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 41 / 99 31 / 42 smaller than the inner diameter of the ferrous steel band. Subsequently, the connector subassembly can be driven from the outside through the outer portion of the tablet-type computer cylinder, and the second ferrous steel band can be attached to it.
[0071] In certain examples, instead of passing the power signals through the gear wheel, certain configurations may pass the power signals through one or a plurality of discs with through contacts on the accessory side. Other configurations may pass power signals through a disc feature that is not necessarily the ferrous features shown; however, any other metal ring could be used as a contact. In still other examples, the power signals may be passed through a plug connector (for example, one in which a male side protrusion is built into the keyboard side and one in which the female side is built into the electronic device). This could make the electrical connection effective and, additionally, could be used as the single point of torque transmission between the keyboard and the tablet-type computer. It should be noted that such an example is similar to a scaled-up version of the tooth that engages with the gear wheel. This may not necessarily be ideal because it may only allow the tablet computer and keyboard (or any other accessory) to be connected when they are in one orientation. Virtually any other methods of electrical connection could be used and, therefore, are clearly within the scope of... Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 42 / 99 32 / 42 present revelation. Additionally, alternative constructions for the cylinder and the shell (which is coupled with the hinge) could be used without deviating from the teachings of the present revelation. Although potentially complicated, such configurations represent viable alternative examples of the present revelation.
[0072] Figure 16 is a simplified schematic diagram illustrating an example of an alternative docking station 160 associated with electronic device 10. As a general proposition, the disc hinge design of the present disclosure (with power isolated from the chassis) enables a more complete integrated tablet-type computer accessory capability, thereby generating numerous functioning tablet-type computer accessories. For example, a docking station 160 is one such implementation. Figure 17 is a simplified schematic diagram illustrating an example of an alternative loudspeaker 170 associated with electronic device 10. Any audio system can be provided in combination with the present disclosure, as the representation in Figure 17 is offered for illustrative purposes only.Figure 18 is a simplified schematic diagram illustrating an alternative 180° hinge design that uses a discrete ball detent mechanism. A detent is a device used to resist or mechanically stop the rotation of a wheel, axle, or spindle. Such a device can be anything in the range from a simple metal pin to a... Petition 870170038617, dated 07 / 06 / 2017, page 43 / 99 33 / 42 machine. In one particular example, the detent is used to simply stop rotation in one direction, or to intentionally divide a rotation into discrete increments.
