Description

1 / 32 COMPRESSION LATCH Separated from BR112023005016-2, filed on September 23, 2023. Cross-referencing related patent applications.

[001] This patent application claims priority to US provisional patent application No. 63 / 083,300, filed September 25, 2020, entitled COMPRESSION LATCH, the entirety of which is incorporated by reference in this descriptive report for all purposes. FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[002] The present invention relates to latches in general, and in particular to compression latches, which can be used to secure storage compartments. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[003] Conventionally, storage compartments in restricted areas (such as, for example, medical environments) must be secured to prevent unauthorized access to their contents. Latches can be used to limit access to these compartments to users with a corresponding key. Although compression latches have been proposed for this and other uses, there remains a need for compression latches with at least improved performance, reduced cost, or ease of manufacture. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[004] Aspects of the present invention relate to latches. According to one aspect of the invention, a latch is configured to secure a panel relative to a structure. The latch includes a housing, configured for coupling with the panel. The housing defines an opening extending along an axis. Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, page 7 / 111 2 / 32 longitudinal, and further defines a cam surface, facing in one direction along the longitudinal axis. A shaft extends within the housing opening and along the longitudinal axis. The shaft is mounted for at least one rotary motion relative to the housing, around the longitudinal axis, and one axial motion relative to the housing, along the longitudinal axis. A barrier wall is mounted for axial motion relative to the housing, along the longitudinal axis. The barrier wall, at least partially, overlaps the housing along the longitudinal axis. A shaft surface extends radially outward from the shaft, relative to the longitudinal axis. The shaft surface contacts the cam surface defined by the housing. The shaft is configured to be coupled to a tongue for frame coupling. The cam surface, defined by the housing, is configured to guide the movement of the shaft relative to the housing, along or around the longitudinal axis, as the shaft is moved within the opening, defined by the housing, along or around the longitudinal axis, and as the shaft surface of the shaft and the cam surface of the housing move relative to each other, so that the tongue can become coupled or uncoupled with the structure. The barrier wall and the housing move relative to each other along the longitudinal axis, in a range of relative positions, and the barrier wall and the housing inhibit the ingress of undesirable materials into the housing opening throughout the range of relative positions.

[005] According to another aspect of the invention, a latch is configured to secure a panel relative to a structure, the latch having an engaged position, in which the panel is fixed relative to the structure, and an unengaged position, in which the panel is not fixed relative to the structure. The latch includes a housing, having a proximal end portion, Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, page 8 / 111 3 / 32 configured for coupling with the panel, the housing having a longitudinal axis. An axis extends along the longitudinal axis. The axis and housing are mounted for relative rotation with each other, and the axis and housing are further mounted for relative axial movement with each other. A tongue is coupled to a distal end portion of the axis, and the tongue is configured for coupling with the structure. A cam surface is defined by the housing. The cam surface is configured to guide the axial movement of the axis relative to the housing, so that the tongue is engaged or disengaged with the structure. The axis and tongue move together toward the proximal end of the housing by rotation of the axis relative to the housing, as the latch passes from the disengaged to the engaged position, thereby compressing the panel and the structure relative to each other.

[006] According to yet another aspect of the invention, a latch is configured to secure a panel relative to a structure. The latch includes a housing configured for coupling with the panel. The housing has a longitudinal axis and an inner surface defining an opening, which extends along the longitudinal axis. The housing further defines a cam surface on the inner surface and facing in a direction along the longitudinal axis. The cam surface and the housing are integrally formed as a single unitary body. A shaft extends within the housing opening and along the longitudinal axis. The shaft is mounted for rotation relative to the housing about the longitudinal axis. The shaft is mounted for axial movement relative to the housing along the longitudinal axis. The shaft has a shaft body and a shaft surface extending radially outward from the shaft body relative to the longitudinal axis. The shaft surface contacts the defined cam surface. Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, page 9 / 111 4 / 32 by the housing. A tongue is coupled to the shaft, and the tongue is configured for coupling with the structure. The cam surface, defined by the housing, is configured to guide the axial movement of the shaft relative to the housing along the longitudinal axis, as the shaft is rotated within the opening defined by the housing, and as the shaft surface of the shaft and the cam surface of the housing move relative to each other, so that the tongue is coupled to, or uncoupled from, the structure.

[007] According to yet another aspect of the invention, a latch is configured for coupling with the panel, the housing having a longitudinal axis and an inner surface defining an opening, which extends along the longitudinal axis from a proximal end of the housing to a distal end of the housing. The housing further defines or provides a cam surface facing in a proximal direction towards the proximal end of the housing, along the longitudinal axis. A shaft extends within the housing opening and along the longitudinal axis. The shaft is mounted for movement relative to the housing. A cam follower is coupled to the shaft for movement with the shaft relative to the housing, the cam follower having a surface extending radially outward from the shaft body relative to the longitudinal axis. The surface of the cam follower contacts the cam surface defined by the housing. The shaft is configured for distal insertion into the housing opening, from the proximal end of the housing to the distal end of the housing, and the cam follower is configured for distal insertion into the housing opening, from the proximal end of the housing to the distal end of the housing. The shaft and cam follower are prevented from proximal insertion into the housing opening, from the distal end of the housing to the proximal end of the housing, and from distal withdrawal from the housing opening by... Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, page 10 / 111 5 / 32 distal end of the housing. The shaft and cam follower are both unusable in the housing opening in the distal direction. [0043] Although the invention is illustrated and described in this descriptive report with reference to specific embodiments, the invention is not intended to be limited to the details shown. Instead, various modifications may be made to the details within the scope and range of equivalents of the claims and without departing from the invention.

[0044] The exemplary latches, described in this descriptive report, may provide compression, in addition to having at least one of improved performance, reduced cost or ease of manufacture.

[0045] Although embodiments of latches are described in this descriptive report, the components of the described embodiments can be incorporated into any conventional latches known to those skilled in the art to achieve the advantages described in this descriptive report. For example, the components of the described embodiments can be incorporated into those latches described in US Patent 4,583,775, the content of which is incorporated by reference in its entirety in this descriptive report. Likewise, the described latches can be useful in any structure, including any type of storage compartment, where it is desirable to protect the contents of the compartment.

[0046] The latch is preferably a compression latch, for Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, page 13 / 111 8 / 32 use with a panel mounted on a frame. This compression latch is configured for movement from an open position, in which a panel is not engaged relative to the frame, to an engaged position, in which the panel is engaged relative to the frame, and to a locked position, in which the panel is pulled against the frame so that they are compressed against each other.

[0047] With general reference to the figures, and according to one aspect of the invention, a latch 100 is configured to be fixed to a panel 106, relative to a structure 108. The latch 100 includes a housing 101, configured for coupling with the panel 106. The housing 110 defines an opening 112, which extends along a longitudinal axis 102, and further defines a cam surface 180 facing in a direction along the longitudinal axis 102. A shaft 120 extends within the opening 112 of the housing and along the longitudinal axis 102. The shaft 120 is mounted for at least one of rotary motion relative to the housing 110, around the longitudinal axis 102, and axial motion relative to the housing 110, along the longitudinal axis 102. A barrier wall, such as a cup wall 130, is mounted for axial motion relative to the housing 110, along the longitudinal axis 102.The barrier wall, at least partially, overlaps the housing 110 along the longitudinal axis 102. A shaft surface, such as a surface of a pin end portion 150, extends radially outward from the shaft 120, relative to the longitudinal axis 102. The shaft surface contacts the cam surface 180, defined by the longitudinal axis 102. The shaft surface contacts the cam surface 180, defined by the housing 110. The shaft 120 is configured to be coupled to a tongue 160 for coupling the frame 108. The cam surface 180, defined by the housing 110, is configured to guide the movement of the shaft 120 relative to the housing 110, along the axis. Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, p. 14 / 111 9 / 32 longitudinal 102 or around the longitudinal axis 120, insofar as the axis 120 is moved within the opening 112, defined by the housing 110, along the longitudinal axis 102 or around the longitudinal axis 120, and insofar as the axis surface of the axis 120 and the cam surface 180 of the housing 110 move relative to each other, so that the tongue 160 can become coupled or uncoupled with the structure 108. The barrier wall and the housing 110 move relative to each other, along the longitudinal axis 102, in a range of relative positions, and the barrier wall and the housing 110 jointly inhibit the ingress of undesirable materials into the opening 112 of the housing 110 through the range of relative positions.

[0048] The shaft 120 includes an optional drive stud 122, which extends along the longitudinal axis 102 and defines a drive surface 124 for rotating the shaft 120 relative to the housing 110. The drive stud 122 is provided with an optional directional indicator 126, corresponding to a position of the tongue 160. The shaft surface of the shaft 120 is defined on an optional pin 150, which extends radially outward from the shaft 120, relative to the longitudinal axis 102.

[0049] Shaft 120 is coupled to tongue 160 for coupling to frame 108, and tongue 160 extends radially outward from the shaft relative to the longitudinal shaft 102 along a radial axis, such as the radial axis extending along shaft 166. Tongue 160 includes an optional cylinder 162, mounted for rotary motion around the radial axis. Alternatively, tongue 160 includes a surface 164.

[0050] The cam surface 180 of housing 110 includes several optional sections 182, 184, 184, all of which are configured to guide the movement of shaft 120 between an engaged position (e.g., the position in Figure 9B) and a disengaged position (e.g., Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, page 15 / 111 10 / 32 example, the position in Figure 8B). Housing 110 is equipped with an optional indicator arrangement 200, the indicator arrangement 200 corresponding to at least one of the disengaged or engaged positions.

[0051] The cam surface 180 and the housing 110 are optionally formed integrally as a single unitary construction body. The housing 110 includes an optional recess 188, configured to receive at least partially the barrier wall.

[0052] The latch 100 includes an optional spring 140, interposed between a housing surface 110 and another latch surface 100, in one embodiment, the other surface being the surface of a cup 130, but the other surface may be a surface of another component, such as the tongue 160, the screw 170 or another component. The spring 140 is configured to propel the housing 110 away from the other surface along the longitudinal axis 102, and the spring 140 is compressed as the axis 120 rotates to an engaged position.

[0053] According to another aspect of the invention, a latch 100 is configured to secure a panel 106 relative to a frame 108, the latch 100 having an engaged position, in which the panel 106 is fixed relative to the frame 108, and an unengaged position, in which the panel 106 is not fixed relative to the frame 108. The latch 100 includes a proximal end portion, including an optional flange 116, configured for engagement with the panel 106, and the housing 110 has a longitudinal axis 102. There may be an optional sealing gasket (not shown) between the flange 116 and the panel 106. A shaft 120 extends along the longitudinal axis 102. The shaft 120 and the housing 110 are mounted for relative rotation with each other around the longitudinal axis 102, and the shaft 120 and the housing 110 are assembled for Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, page 16 / 111 11 / 32 relative axial movement of one with the other. A tongue 160 is coupled to a distal end portion (e.g., the bottom end portion of shaft 120 in the orientation illustrated in Figure 2) of shaft 120, and the tongue 160 is configured for coupling with structure 108. A cam surface 180 is defined by housing 110. The cam surface 180 is configured to guide the axial movement of shaft 120 relative to housing 110, so that the tongue 160 is coupled to, or uncoupled from, structure 108. Shaft 120 and tongue 160 move together to the proximal end (e.g., the top portion of housing 110 in the orientation of Figure 2) of housing 110 by rotation of shaft 120 relative to housing 110, so that the latch 100 passes from the uncoupled position to the coupled position, thus In this way, compressing panel 106 and structure 108 relative to each other.

[0054] The latch 100 includes an optional barrier wall (e.g., an annular wall or a part of the cup wall 130, a wall formed to extend upwards from the tongue 160, etc.) fitted for axial movement relative to the housing 110. The housing 110 includes an optional recess 180, configured to selectively receive at least part of the barrier wall.

[0055] The latch 100 includes an optional spring 140, wherein the axial movement of the tongue 160, relative to the housing 100, is configured to move the spring 140 between an expanded state (e.g., Figure 8B) and a compressed state (e.g., Figure 9B). The spring 140 is interposed between a surface of the housing 110 and another surface (e.g., a cup surface 130, a tongue surface 160, etc.) of the latch 100 and is configured to propel the housing 110 away from the other surface along the longitudinal axis 102. The tongue 160 is coupled to, or uncoupled from, the structure 108 as the spring 140 moves between the Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, page 17 / 111 12 / 32 expanded state and compressed state.

[0056] The shaft 120 includes an optional drive 122, configured for coupling with a tool. The drive 122 moves along the longitudinal axis 102 as the shaft 120 rotates relative to the housing 110. The drive 122 can be male or female and configured for coupling with various types of tools.

[0057] The latch 100 also includes an optional pin 150 extending from shaft 120 relative to longitudinal axis 102. Pin 150 is configured to contact cam surface 180 as shaft 120 and housing 110 rotate relative to each other around longitudinal axis 102.

[0058] A latch system includes the latch 100, a panel 106 coupled to the housing 110, a structure 108 positioned for coupling by the tongue 160, and a gasket 109, interposed between the panel 106 and the structure 108. The tongue 160 compresses the gasket 109 as the shaft 120 and the tongue 160 move together towards the proximal end of the housing 100 by rotation of the shaft 120 relative to the housing 110, as the latch 100 passes from the uncoupled position to the coupled position.

[0059] According to yet another aspect of the invention, a latch 100 is configured to secure a panel 106 relative to a structure 108. The latch 100 includes a housing 110, configured for coupling with the panel 106. The housing 110 has a longitudinal axis 102 and an inner surface, defining an opening 112, extending along the longitudinal axis 102. The housing 110 further defines a cam surface 180 on the inner surface of the housing 110 and facing in a direction along the longitudinal axis 102. The cam surface 180 and the housing 110 are integrally formed as a single unitary body. An axis 120 extends within the opening 112 of the housing 110 and along the longitudinal axis 102. The axis 120 is Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, p. 18 / 111 13 / 32 mounted for rotation relative to housing 110 around longitudinal axis 102. Shaft 120 is also mounted for axial movement relative to housing 110, along longitudinal axis 102. Shaft 120 has a shaft body and a shaft surface extending radially from the shaft body relative to longitudinal axis 102. The shaft surface contacts the cam surface 180 defined by housing 110. A tab 160 is coupled to shaft 120, and the tab 160 is configured to couple to frame 108.The cam surface 180, defined by the housing 110, is configured to guide the axial movement of the shaft 120 relative to the housing 110, along the longitudinal axis 101, as the shaft 120 is rotated within the opening 112, defined by the housing 110, around the longitudinal axis 102, and as the shaft surface of the longitudinal shaft 120 and the cam surface 180 of the housing 110 move relative to each other, so that the tongue 160 is coupled to, or uncoupled from, the structure 108.

[0060] The latch 100 includes an additional spring 140 adjacent to a housing surface 110. The spring 140 is configured to propel the housing 110 in one direction along the longitudinal axis 102. The latch 100 also includes an additional cup 130, mounted for axial movement relative to the housing 110, along the longitudinal axis 102. The cup 130 provides a barrier wall and defines an annular recess, such as an inner region of the cup 130. The spring 140 is optionally interposed between the housing surface 110 and a cup surface 130 and extends into the annular recess of the cup 130. The spring 140 is configured to propel the housing 110 away from the cup 130, along the longitudinal axis 102.

[0061] The cam surface 180, defined by housing 110, optionally includes several sections 182, 184, 186. Each section is configured to help guide the axial movement of shaft 120, between Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, p. 19 / 111 14 / 32 an engaged position and a disengaged position. The shaft surface of shaft 120 is defined on an optional pin 150, extending radially outward from the shaft body relative to the longitudinal axis 102.

[0062] By rotation of shaft 120 relative to housing 110, as latch 100 passes from an uncoupled to an engaged position, shaft 120 and tongue 160 move together to a mounting plane (the plane in which housing 110 is configured to be mounted on panel 106). Panel 106 and frame 108 are thus compressed relative to each other.

[0063] A position of a proximal end (top part in Figure 2) of shaft 120 relative to the proximal end part (top end part in Figure 2) of housing 110 provides a compression indicator (see, for example, Figures 8B and 9B). The compression indicator provided by the position of the proximal end part of shaft 120 relative to the proximal end part of housing 110 indicates compression when the proximal end (e.g., the top part shown in Figure 2) of shaft 120 corresponds in position to a proximal end (e.g., the top part shown in Figure 2) of housing 110, or the proximal end of longitudinal shaft 120 and the proximal end of housing 110 are within a predetermined spacing. The compression indicator shows incomplete compression (or no compression) when the proximal end of shaft 120 is spaced distally from the proximal end of housing 110, or the proximal end of shaft 120 and the proximal end of housing 110 exceed the predetermined spacing.

[0064] The spacing (or lack thereof) between the proximal end of shaft 120 and the proximal end of housing 110 can therefore indicate whether or not there is compression. Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, page 20 / 111 15 / 32 appropriate or the latch position (engaged or disengaged). Also, the difference in spacing between the proximal end of shaft 120 and the proximal end of housing 110, when the latch is in the open and closed positions, is also an indicator of the degree of compression. In one embodiment, the latch has an offset of approximately 4 mm, so that the spacing between the head of the housing (or proximal end of housing 110) and the top of the tongue providing the compressive function (tongue 160) is reduced by approximately 4 mm, between the unprotected and protected states of the latch.

[0065] Also, the actuating part of the shaft (top part or proximal end of shaft 120) moves axially relative to the housing 110. Consequently, there are two indications that the latch is protected. Firstly, indicator 126 on the head of shaft 120 corresponds with the appropriate indicator 200 on the top part of housing 110. Secondly, the top part of the square part or actuating part of shaft 120 will become coplanar with the top part of housing 110.

[0066] Regarding the predetermined spacing size between the proximal end of shaft 120 and the proximal end of housing 110, when there is incomplete (or no) compression, the spacing can be selected depending on the latch application. For example, adequate compression may be indicated when the spacing between the proximal end of shaft 120 and the proximal end of housing 110 is preferably less than 2 mm, particularly less than 1 mm. Also, inadequate compression is indicated when the spacing between the proximal end of shaft 120 and the proximal end of housing 110 is greater than 2 mm, particularly equal to or greater than 4 mm. Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, page 21 / 111 16 / 32

[0067] One of several sections 182, 184, 186 of cam surface 180 defines a recess 184, positioned to receive the shaft surface, such as a pin surface 150, of shaft 120. The recess 184 is configured to releasably retain shaft 120 in a predetermined position or to provide haptic feedback to a latch user 100, with respect to the predetermined position.

[0068] Housing 110 is die cast, machined, injection molded or printed. Other forming methods are also considered.

[0069] The cam surface 180 of housing 110 is molded together or compressed into housing 110. Other forming methods are also considered.

[0070] Housing 110 is made of zinc or metal injection molded steel. Other materials and combinations thereof are also considered. Shaft 120 and housing 110 are optionally made of the same material or materials. The shaft surface of shaft 120 is optionally made of hardened steel.

[0071] The directional indicator 126 indicates the position of the tongue 160 in each of its positions 160. A torque, required to rotate the shaft 120 relative to the housing 110 and compress the panel 106 relative to the structure 108, is optionally equal to or less than 7.9 Nm, thus allowing manual rotation of the shaft 120 relative to the housing 110 and compression of the panel 108 relative to the structure 108.

[0072] The torque required to operate the latch is proportional to the compressive load. For example, a preferred torque of approximately equal to or less than 5 Nm of nominal operating torque is optionally selected. There may be lighter panel loads and / or lower compressive loads, which will be less than or significantly less than 5 Nm. With higher panel loads, the torque will increase. The torque can be supplied Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, p. 22 / 111 17 / 32 with an upper limit of 7.9 Nm, for example, because that may be a maximum ergonomic torque that a typical user can apply manually.

[0073] According to yet another aspect of the invention, a latch 100 is configured to secure a panel 106 relative to a structure 108. The latch 100 includes a housing 110, configured for coupling with the panel 106, the housing 110 having a longitudinal axis 102 and an inner surface, defining an opening, extending along the longitudinal axis 102 from a proximal end (top part in Figure 2) of the housing 110 to a distal end (bottom part in Figure 2) of the housing 110. The housing 110 further defines or provides a cam surface 180 facing in a proximal direction (upwards in Figure 2), towards the proximal end of the housing 110, along the longitudinal axis 102. A shaft 120 extends within the opening 112 of the housing 110 and along the longitudinal axis 102. The shaft 120 is mounted for movement relative to the housing. 110.A cam follower (e.g., pin 150) is coupled to shaft 120 for movement with shaft 120 relative to housing 110, the cam follower having a surface extending radially outward from the shaft body relative to the longitudinal axis 102. The surface of the cam follower contacts the cam surface 180 defined by housing 110. Shaft 120 is configured for insertion distally (downward in Figure 2) into opening 112 of housing 110, from the proximal end of housing 110 to the distal end of housing 110, and the cam follower is configured for insertion distally into opening 12 of housing 110, from the proximal end of housing 110 to the distal end of housing 110. Shaft 120 and the cam follower are prevented from insertion proximally (upward in Figure 2) into opening 112 of housing 110, from the distal end of housing 110 to the proximal end of housing 110, and of. Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, p. 23 / 111 18 / 32 distally removed from opening 112 of housing 110 by the distal end of housing 110. Shaft 120 and cam follower are both insertable into opening 112 of housing 110, in the distal direction.

[0074] In this aspect of the invention, all components of the latch can optionally be mounted along one direction. For example, with reference to Figure 2, all components of the latch can be mounted in a top-down direction. In an assembly procedure, the tab 160 is lowered by the screw threads 170, the cup 130 is lowered onto the tab 160, the spring 140 is lowered onto the cup 130, the mounting nut 190 is lowered onto the cup 130, the housing is lowered onto the spring 140, and the shaft 120 (with the pin 150 and the O-ring 134) is lowered into the housing 110 and coupled by the screw 170. Although the pin 150 is pre-inserted into the shaft 120 in a direction transverse to the shaft 120, the pin 150 is also assembled together with the shaft 120 in a top-down direction.

[0075] The cam surface 180 and the housing 110 are optionally formed integrally as a single unitary construction. The cam follower is optionally a separate component, such as the pin 150, mounted on the shaft 120, and the mounting of the cam follower on the shaft 120 is configured to resist or prevent rotation of the cam follower relative to the shaft 120. The cam follower is optionally a pin 150, extending from an opening 128, defined on the shaft 120, at least one end of the pin 150 extending radially outward from the shaft 120 relative to the longitudinal axis 102.

[0076] Referring now to the specific realizations selected for illustration in the drawings, Figure 1 illustrates a latch. Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, p. 24 / 111 19 / 32 100, exemplary, according to aspects of the present invention. The latch 100 is configured to secure a panel 106 relative to a structure 108, as shown in Figures 10A - 10E. As an overview, the latch 100 includes a housing 110, a shaft 120, a cup 130, a spring 140, a pin 150, a tongue 160 and a screw 170. Further details of the latch 100 are described below.

[0077] Housing 110 is configured for coupling with panel 106 in a housing mounting plane, in which panel 106 resides. In an exemplary embodiment, as shown in Figures 3A-3E, housing 110 has a body part 118 dimensioned to fit within a through hole, typically double D-shaped, in panel 106. The body part 118 of housing 110 extends along a longitudinal axis 102 (Figure 3F). As shown in Figures 2, 3F and 10A-10E, the longitudinal axis 102 generally extends in a direction orthogonal to the plane of panel 106. However, it should be understood from the description in this descriptive report that the longitudinal axis 102 may extend at an oblique angle relative to panel 106, and the direction of the longitudinal axis 102 is not intended to be limited.

[0078] Additionally, the body part 118 of the housing 110 defines an opening 112 therein, which extends along the longitudinal axis 102. The opening 112 is dimensioned to accommodate various components of the latch 110, which are described below. Furthermore, the housing includes a recess 188 (Figure 3E), configured to receive at least partially the cup walls 130.

[0079] Cup 130 provides a barrier wall to aid in sealing against, or at least inhibiting or reducing, the entry of undesirable materials into the housing opening. For example, a barrier wall, such as the outer wall or annular wall of Cup 130, provides a barrier against the unimpeded entry of Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, p. 25 / 111 20 / 32 at least some contaminants or residue or moisture entering the opening or the internal region of the housing.

[0080] As described in more detail below, an O-ring or other form of seal is also provided between the shaft and the housing, thereby preventing the ingress of undesirable materials into the housing opening from the top or open end of the housing. This seal blocks the entry of materials from outside an enclosure in which the latch is mounted. To inhibit this ingress from the other end or bottom end of the housing, the barrier wall (such as that of cup 130) blocks, at least partially or entirely, materials from within or around an enclosure in which the latch is mounted.

[0081] A rating, such as an IP (or Ingress Protection) rating, as defined in the international standard EN 60529 (British BS EN 60529:1992), can be used to define levels of sealing efficiency of enclosures against the intrusion of foreign bodies (tools, dirt and other contaminants) and moisture. For example, an enclosure having a latch according to aspects of the invention can be rated IP at a value equal to or greater than 65, so that the entire latch system resists ingress. Consequently, latches according to embodiments of this invention can be used with an IP65 enclosure and considered dirt-proof and protected against water projected from a nozzle. The seals at the top end (e.g., the O-ring 134) and / or at the bottom end (e.g., the cup barrier wall 130), as oriented, for example, in Figure 8B, satisfy an ingress protection rating (such as IP65 or higher), so that the associated enclosures can maintain that rating.

[0082] Additionally, housing 110 includes a cam surface 180 (Figure 3E) within housing 110 and facing along the. Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, p. 26 / 111 21 / 32 longitudinal axis 102. As further discussed below, cam surface 180 defines a travel path for pin 150 (Figure 2); more particularly, cam surface 180 defines a travel path for travel regions 152 of pin 150. In a preferred embodiment, part or all of cam surface 180 is formed as an integral or unitary piece with housing 110. This structure may be desired to further minimize the number of components to be manufactured for latch 100.

[0083] The housing 110 further includes a flanged portion 116, extending circumferentially around an external surface of the body portion 118. The flanged portion 116 is dimensioned to contact an internal or external surface of the panel 106, when the body portion 118 of the housing 110 is received within the through hole of the panel 106 (as seen in Figures 10A - 10E).

[0084] The flanged part 116 includes one or more indicators 200 (Figures 8A, 9A), which alternate between a first and a second position to indicate whether the latch 100 is in the engaged and locked position (Figure 9A) or in the disengaged position (Figure 8A). The indicators on the top of the housing may be color-coded (e.g., red / green), illuminated (e.g., by LED), or simply indicate a degree of rotation (e.g., 90 degrees) by mechanical or electromechanical means.

[0085] In the embodiment illustrated in Figures 8A - 9B, the indicators 200 comprise several notches or other markings that are spaced approximately equally from each other, that is, at 90 degrees, around a circumferential surface of flanged part 116. Furthermore, the various notches may have different appearances (color, size, shape, etc.) relative to each other.

[0086] Other means may be incorporated into a 100 latch, of Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, p. 27 / 111 22 / 32 according to the present invention, to allow a user to easily recognize whether the latch 100 is in the engaged and locked position (Figures 9A and 9B) or in the disengaged position (Figures 8A and 8B). For example, the indicators 200 may include a light, such as an LED, or a fluorescent or phosphorescent paint may be applied to at least part of the indicator, so that it is illuminated in one of the positions (engaged or disengaged and unlocked). The unlocked position in this embodiment corresponds to the position or illuminated condition (Figure 8A); however, if desired, the position or illuminated indicator of the latch 100 may be reversed, relative to the positions shown in Figures 8A - 9B.

[0087] The housing 110 further includes an outer surface having a means for securing the latch 100 to a panel 106. For example, the means may be in the form of interrupted or uninterrupted screw threads 114 along a portion of the outer surface of the housing 110. As seen in Figures 3A - 3F, the screw threads 114 on the outer surface of the housing 110 may be interrupted by two or more smooth parts, preferably at least four smooth parts, formed on the outer surface of the housing 110. The smooth parts, formed on the outer surface of the housing 110, prevent rotation of the housing 110 during the operation of the latch 100. The interrupted threads 114 on the outer surface of the housing 110 may be coupled by a nut 190, as described below.

[0088] In a preferred embodiment, the housing 110 is coupled with the panel 106 using the nut 190. The nut 190 is adapted to be screwed into the thread 114, formed on the outer surface of the body part 118, so that the panel 106 is fastened between the flanged part 116 of the housing 110 and the nut 190. A washer (not shown) may be added between the panel 106 and the nut 190 to create a proper grip of the latch 100 on the panel 106. There may be Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, page 28 / 111 23 / 32 also a sealing gasket (not shown) between flange 116 and panel 106. Additionally, a gasket 109 (Figures 10A - 10E) can be added between panel 106 and frame 108 to protect the interior of the compartment from external elements such as liquid or dust. The use of nut 190 to tighten latch 100 on panel 106 desirably prevents unauthorized removal of latch 100 from panel 106.

[0089] Alternatively or additionally, housing 110 may be coupled with panel 106 by any other means, including, for example, a friction or threaded fit of the body part 118 within the through hole of panel 106 or by adhesion of the flanged part 116 to the surface of panel 106. For example, a fastener, such as a screw, may be used as may mounting configurations of brackets. Furthermore, part or all of housing 110 may be formed as an integral or unitary piece with panel 106.

[0090] The shaft 120 (illustrated in Figures 2A and 4A-4D) extends along the longitudinal axis 102 within the opening 112 of the housing 110. As seen in Figure 2A, the shaft 120 comprises a drive stud 122, extending along the longitudinal axis 102 and forming a drive surface 124 for contacting an actuator (not shown) and rotating the shaft 120. The drive stud 122 is provided with a directional indicator 126, corresponding to the position or direction of the latch 160. In an exemplary embodiment, the indicators 200, when aligned with the directional indicator 126, indicate to the user that the latch 100 is in the disengaged position (Figure 8A) or in the engaged and locked position (Figure 9A).

[0091] Shaft 120 may also optionally include an O-ring groove 132 to receive a packing, such as an O-ring 134, for sealing part of shaft 120 from the external environment and preventing, Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, page 29 / 111 24 / 32 for example, water ingress and freezing within housing 110, which can damage the latch mechanism, or resist water or dust passing through the latch and damaging the contents of the compartment. Shaft 120 further includes a through hole 128. The through hole 128 extends radially through the shaft body 120. The through hole 128 is formed to accommodate the pin 150, which passes through shaft 120, as described in more detail below. Shaft 120 further includes a threaded recess 172 at its lower end. The threaded recess 172 is sized to accommodate the screw 170 for tightening the tab 160, as described in more detail below.

[0092] Furthermore, shaft 120 is mounted for rotation around longitudinal axis 102. In addition, shaft 120 is mounted for axial movement relative to housing 110. As shown in Figures 4A - 4D, shaft 120 may have a cylindrical shape, to allow free rotation of shaft 120 within housing 110.

[0093] The shaft 120 further includes the through hole 128, as mentioned above, which is configured to receive the pin 150 therein. The pin 150 extends radially outward from the shaft 120, relative to the longitudinal axis 102. The pin 150 further makes contact with the cam surface 180, defined by the housing 110, as illustrated in Figure 3E. Consequently, the shaft 120 is limited to move rotationally or axially within the path defined by the sliding or rolling coupling 150, along the cam surface 180. In an exemplary embodiment, as shown in Figures 5A - 5C, the pin 150 is a cylindrical column. As shown in Figure 2, pin 150 extends diametrically through hole 128 of shaft 120. Pin 150 is long enough to form diametrically opposed pin end portions 152 on either side of shaft 120. Alternatively, pin 150 and shaft 120 can be integrally formed. Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, page 30 / 111 25 / 32

[0094] The cup 130 (illustrated in Figure 2) is mounted for axial movement relative to the housing 110. The cup 130 is configured to rest on a flat or inclined surface 164 (Figure 7E) of the tongue 160. Furthermore, the cup 130 is positioned to encircle the shaft 120. A propensity means, such as the helical spring 140, may be received within the cup 130 to facilitate the axial displacement of the shaft 120 relative to the housing 110. The spring 140 is configured to propel the housing 110 away from the cup 130, along the longitudinal axis 102. In an exemplary embodiment, the spring 140 is a compression spring, which extends from a surface within the cup 130 to an opposite surface of the housing 110 (as shown in Figure 8B). Additionally, spring 140 is positioned to encircle shaft 120.

[0095] As illustrated in Figures 8B and 9B and elsewhere in the figures, a wall portion 131 generally extends along the direction of the longitudinal axis and defines an annular recess to accommodate an end or end portion of the spring 140. Thus, the annular recess is positioned to limit the axial and radial movement of the spring end 140. Similarly, the recess 188 in the housing is defined in part by a wall portion 189, which generally extends along the direction of the longitudinal axis and accommodates an end or end portion of the spring 140. Thus, the annular recess 188 is positioned to limit the axial and radial movement of the spring end 140.

[0096] As illustrated in Figures 8B and 9B, the cup and housing move relative to each other and cooperate to capture the spring 140. Preferably, there is at least some overlap between the walls 131, 189 of the cup 130 and housing 110, respectively. This makes it possible to prevent or reduce the ingress of contaminants into the area of the spring 140 or into the interior of the housing 110. Although the embodiment Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, p. 31 / 111 Figure 26 / 32 illustrated includes a cup wall extending into and encircled by the housing wall; the cup wall may alternatively be configured to extend around and encircle the housing wall.

[0097] A coupling element, such as the tongue 160, is actuated to couple to a coupling structure 108. The tongue 160 extends radially outward from the shaft 120 relative to the longitudinal axis 102 and along a radial axis 104 (Figure 1C). As illustrated in Figure 7E, a preferred embodiment of the tongue 160 comprises a cylinder 162, a surface 164, and a shaft 166. As can be seen better in Figures 8B and 9B, the shaft 166 is coupled to the surface 164 and the cylinder 162 is configured to encircle the shaft 166. Furthermore, the cylinder 162 is mounted for rotary motion relative to the radial axis 104.

[0098] Figures 11A - 11C illustrate three embodiments of the latch 100 having a specific tongue 160. Preferably, as shown in Figure 11A, the tongue 160 comprises a cylinder 162. This configuration may be desired to minimize, for example, risks or damage to the surface of the structure 108. In Figures 11B and 11C, the flat surface of the tongue 160 may be desired for stable coupling of the structure 108, improved surface contact with the structure 108, and minimal surface preparation of the structure 108. Furthermore, the tongue 160 may be coupled to the shaft 120 using a fastening means, such as a screw 170. In an exemplary embodiment, the tongue 160 is firmly coupled to the lower end of the shaft 130 by means of a screw 170, which is coupled with the threaded recess 172 (Figure 4D).

[0099] The tongue 160 is movable between a closed / engaged position and an open / disengaged position. The tongue 160 is moved between the engaged position and the disengaged position by Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, page 32 / 111 27 / 32 rotation and axial movement of shaft 120. As illustrated in Figures 10A - 10E, the tongue 160 is configured to engage with, or disengage from, structure 108. In the closed / engaged position, shown in Figures 9A - 9B and 10C and 10E, the tongue 160 is engaged with structure 108 and secures panel 106 relative to structure 108. In the open / disengaged position, shown in Figures 8A - 8B and 10A, 10B and 10D, the tongue 180 is disengaged from structure 108 and allows relative movement of panel 106 relative to structure 108.

[00100] An exemplary operation of the latch system 300, comprising panel 106, frame 108 and latch 100, is described below with reference to Figures 8A - 10E. As will be evident from the description below, the cam surface 180 is configured to guide the rotational and axial movement of the shaft 120 as it is rotated within the housing 110, so that the tongue 160 engages with, or disengages from, frame 108. Furthermore, it should be understood that the disengagement action of latch 100 is generally the reverse of the engagement action.

[00101] The latch 100, according to the present invention, can be actuated between a disengaged state and an engaged state, the engaged state further including a locked or protected (compressed) state. In the open or disengaged position, the panel 106 is disengaged relative to the structure 108. In the closed or engaged position, the panel 106 is engaged relative to the structure 108. In the locked position, the panel 106 is pulled against the structure 108 so that they are compressed against each other (as illustrated in Figures 10C and 10E).

[00102] As an overview, the drive stud 122 corresponds to an actuator (not shown). The drive stud 122 is configured to allow a user to actuate or rotate the shaft 120 relative to the housing 110, so that the cam surface 180, defined by the housing 110, guides the movement of Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, page 33 / 111 28 / 32 rotation and axial movement of shaft 120. As shaft 120 is rotated within housing 110, the tongue 160 engages with frame 108 in an engaged position, in which panel 106 is engaged relative to frame 108, and in a locked position, in which panel 106 is pulled against frame 108 so that they are compressed against each other (Figures 10C and 10E). Shaft 120 can also be rotated within housing 110 so that the tongue 160 is disengaged from frame 108 in an open position, in which panel 106 is disengaged relative to frame 108 (Figures 10A, 10B and 10D).

[00103] As mentioned above, shaft 120 is operationally connected to tongue 160. In one embodiment of the present invention, this can be done with pin 150, which is configured to move along the cam surface 180 of housing 110, so as to rotate tongue 160 in response to the rotation of shaft 120 from the disengaged position to the engaged position and vice versa. Furthermore, latch 100 can be configured so that shaft 120 and tongue 160 rotate in unison. Housing 110 remains stationary relative to panel 106 during the actuation of shaft 120.

[00104] Additionally, the latch 100 can be configured so that the shaft 120 moves axially along the opening 112 to one end of the housing 110 (the upper end, as illustrated, for example, in Figure 8A), as the latch 100 moves from the disengaged to the engaged position. The cup 130 is mounted for axial movement relative to the housing 110, and the spring 140 is sized to fit inside the cup 130. As mentioned above, the sliding coupling of the pin 150 with the cam surface 180 of the housing 110 causes the tongue 160 to engage with the frame 108. As the tongue 160 engages with the frame 108, the spring 140 compresses inside the cup 130, while the cam surface facilitates the direction of the axial movement of the Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, page 34 / 111 29 / 32 shaft 120 relative to housing 110. The sliding coupling of pin 150 and cam surface 180 is further described below.

[00105] The cam surface 180, defined by the housing 110, directs the movement of the shaft 120 within the housing 110, during an opening / disengaging or closing / engaging operation of the latch 100, as described in more detail below. The housing 110 includes a cam surface 180, having surface parts that form an inclined section 182, an indentation section 184, and a plateau section 186 (as seen in Figure 3E). Cam surface 180 guides the rotational and axial movement of shaft 120. More particularly, cam surface 180 contacts the end regions 152 of pin 150, which extends radially outward relative to the longitudinal axis 102 of shaft 120, and is positioned on either side of shaft 120. The actuation of latch 100 thus rotates shaft 120 around the longitudinal axis 102, so that pin 150 makes contact with cam surface 180.

[00106] Specifically, the action of shaft 120 provides a sliding movement of pin 150 along each of the inclined section 182, the indentation section 184, and the plate section 186. In a preferred embodiment, the cam surface 180 comprises a pair of symmetrical inclined sections 182, indentation sections 184, and plate sections 186, with each section configured to make contact with one of the end parts 152 of shaft 120. In the engagement action of the latch system 300, the inclined section 182 allows the movement of at least one end part 152 of pin 150, and correspondingly of shaft 120, in the axial direction relative to housing 110. Consequently, shaft 120 moves in the axial direction away from, or axially relative to, cup 130 (with the force of a means of propulsion, such as spring 140). This axial movement of the shaft Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, page 35 / 111 30 / 32 120 moves the tongue 160 axially upwards and towards the structure 108. The axial movement of the pin 150 continues until the pin 150 reaches the indentation section 182 and the platen section 184, after which movement of the pin 150 and the shaft 120 is possible. As shown in Figures 9A - 9B and 10A - 10E, as the shaft 120 is rotated, the tongue 160 moves to engage with the structure 108, so that the cylinder 162 rotates relative to the radial axis 104 (Figure 1C).

[00107] As shown in Figures 8A and 9A, a complete rotation of shaft 120 constitutes moving the tab 160 approximately 90° from either the open or closed position, as shown by the difference between the indicators 200. It should be understood, however, that the rotation distance between the fully open / disengaged and fully closed / engaged positions and the locked position can be any desired distance or angle of rotation.

[00108] In one embodiment of the present invention, the engaged position includes the tongue 160 in a locked or secure position, in which the tongue 160 is compressed against the frame 108, thereby maintaining the position of the panel 106 relative to the frame 108 (Figures 10A - 10E). More particularly, Figures 9B and 10D - 10E show the latch 10 in the closed or engaged and locked position, in which the tongue 160 is obstructed by the frame 108. As shown in Figure 10E, the tongue 160 is rotated to engage with the frame 108 in the engaged position. As shown in Figure 9B, the indicator 200 is aligned with the directional indicator 126, indicating to the user that the tongue 160 is in the locked and engaged position. At this stage, and as shown in Figure 9B, shaft 120 is in a higher axial position, with the drive stud 122 being positioned along the same plane as the end or top part of the flanged part 116.Additionally, spring 140, inside cup 130, is fully compressed. Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, page 36 / 111 31 / 32

[00109] To move from the engaged position to the disengaged position, it must be understood that the disengagement action of the latch system 300, comprising the latch 100, is generally the reverse of the engagement action described above. A user engages the drive stud 122 of the shaft 120 and begins its rotation. The rotation of the shaft 120 causes a corresponding movement of the pin 150 along the cam surface 180. As the shaft 120 is rotated, the tongue 160 moves away from the frame 108 and rotates towards the open or disengaged position, so that the cylinder 162 rotates relative to the radial axis 104 (Figure 1C). Similarly, as with the engagement action, the rotational capacity of the disengagement action should preferably be limited to about 90 degrees.

[00110] As shown in Figure 8A, the indicators 200 remain aligned with the directional indicator 126, but this time indicating to the user that the tongue 160 is in the disengaged position, as the shaft 120 has been rotated clockwise from the closed position. As shown in Figure 8B, the shaft 120 is in a lower axial position, with the spring 140 inside the cup 130 fully extended or decompressed. At the end of the axial displacement of the tongue 160, the tongue 160 is no longer obstructed by the structure 108, thus allowing a user to pull the panel 106 away from the structure and, for example, access the interior of an enclosure.

[00111] Although the exemplary embodiment in Figures 8A 10E (and elsewhere in this descriptive report) illustrates a counterclockwise rotation of shaft 120, from the disengaged to the engaged position, it should be understood that the operations described in this descriptive report can alternatively be performed with a clockwise rotation of shaft 120. Furthermore, in the present embodiment, the components of the latch 100 are preferably made of metallic materials and metallic alloys; Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, p. 37 / 111 32 / 32 However, other suitable materials may also be used when desired, such as plastic. Furthermore, as those skilled in the art will understand, actuation means may be used to operate a latch mechanism, made in accordance with the various embodiments of the present invention. For example, in applications where safety is not a concern, the actuator may be a cable or a button, attached to the latch mechanism, to eliminate the need for a tool to operate the latch mechanism.

[00112] As previously mentioned, the exemplary latches described in this descriptive report make it possible to maintain or improve performance, reduce cost and / or the number of components, and / or facilitate manufacturing, while at the same time maintaining at least one or all of: (1) adequate drag or stroke of the latch tongue; (2) trouble-free operation; and (3) adequate compression force.

[00113] Although preferred embodiments of the invention have been shown and described in this descriptive report, it should be understood that these embodiments are provided only by way of example. Numerous variations, changes and substitutions will occur to those skilled in the art, without departing from the spirit of the invention. Consequently, it is intended that the appended claims cover all such variations as remaining within the spirit and scope of the invention. Petition 870260076789, dated 07 / 31 / 2026, page 38 / 111
