Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to systems, devices, articles, and methods supporting the creation flight plans for an aircraft gathering telemetry. Upon receipt of a request for telemetry and specifications of aircraft sensor systems, a processor selects a sensor system and generates a flight plan which includes a flight path and a longitudinal sampling condition. The generated flight plan is loaded onto a tangible non-transitory processor readable storage device which in a flight, is carried by an aircraft. The processor continues to trigger a respective sensor in the selected list of sensors to acquire the telemetry, and the flight plan is updated during the flight. The flight plan when followed may effect a plurality of passes in order to increase precision of measurement. A machine learning system may also be used to train, validate, and test machine learning models used in the sensor systems as well as to create a flight plan.

Description

1 SYSTEMS, DEVICES, ARTICLES AND METHODS FOR DYNAMIC FLIGHT PLANS IN TELEMETRY Technical Field

[0001] The disclosure generally relates to the operation of sensors in the context of aviation. More particularly, the disclosure relates to systems, devices, articles, and methods that create flight plans for aircraft gathering telemetry. BACKGROUND

[0002] Aircraft include sensors for measuring attributes of the environment of the aircraft. Environment sensors include instruments for composition of air, humidity, particulate, and temperature. Environment sensors include cameras or imagers that gathers images (e.g., IR, visible, UV). These images are used in processes like machine learning and photogrammetry. Photogrammetry is the practice of obtaining information about objects by the analysis of photographic images.

[0003] In photogrammetry, overlap refers to the amount of common area between consecutive images taken during a survey. Overlap includes front overlap, also known as longitudinal overlap, the redundant coverage of the subject between consecutive images along a flight path. Typically, a front overlap of 60% to 80% is recommended for aerial mapping projects. Side overlap (lateral overlap) is the overlap between images taken side-by-side across the ground and amongst different paths in a flight plan. Overlap is used to identify key features in adjacent images to effect coregistration of the images.

[0004] Existing systems can plan flight paths that provide good resolution over slowly varying elevation based on the capacity of the sensors. No systems consider the aircraft's performance which matters when the flight path is low altitude and terrain following. The forward overlap is determined by an intervalometer and not the amount of forward overlap. If the pilot is out of position on pass the required side overlap may not have been achieved. Aircraft can be used to voxelate measurements of an air mass. CA 3302383 Date reçue / Received date 2026-02-19 2

[0073] To detect the aircraft data further communicated to the aircraft sensor system 100, in an embodiment, the plurality of sensors 420 detects the aircraft data in a fixed interval CA 3302383 Date reçue / Received date 2026-02-19 16 set by the user device 200. In an embodiment, the plurality of sensors 420 detects the aircraft data in real time.

[0074] The plurality of sensors 420, shown in FIG. 4A and FIG. 4B, includes two or more sensors. Examples of sensors include imagers such as an RGB camera and infrared camera (e.g., UV, visible, near-infrared, or thermal). The cameras may have a nadir orientation (i.e., straight down) or be angled, such as, low oblique or high oblique (e.g., the horizon is in view). The sensors can also include position sensors such as Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver, Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) (e.g., vibration or multi-axis), pose sensors (e.g., angle of attack, magnetometer), and speed sensors (e.g., pitot static or static). [0077] FIG. 5 is a conceptual diagram illustrating aspects of a request for telemetry and a flight plan. As shown, graphic 500 includes a base map 502 and a region of interest 504. The base map 502, depicts a location and a plurality of features, e.g., bridge, river (506a), road (506b), terrain, and town (506c). CA 3302383 Date reçue / Received date 2026-02-19 17

[0078] In some embodiments, a user provides a request for telemetry. The request may include an area or region of interest e.g., region of interest 504. The region of interest can be specified as a location, a polygon (as shown) or a center and a radius of a circle. In some embodiments, region of interest 504 is a volume such as a cylinder (e.g., right circular cylinder), or a prism. In some embodiments, region of interest 504 is a volume in which a plurality of environmental samples (e.g., air composition) are to be collected. In some embodiments, graphic 500 and a base map 502 are displayed in a graphical user interface running on a processor-based device and the user provides a region of interest.

[0079] In some embodiments, a controller (e.g., at least one processor 102) generates a flight plan including a flight path 510 comprising a plurality of flight directions e.g., straight paths (512), turns (514), climbs, and descents. The plurality of flight directions may effect a plurality of passes over an extended target such as a settlement or a cluster of roads.

[0080] The flight plan includes a plurality of shutter or sample locations 516 for example location 516a shown in FIG. 5B. The plurality of locations 516 are spaced along flight path 510 and correspond to the longitudinal sampling conditions where the sensor is an imager and the shutter locations 516 correspond to a plurality of footprints 518.

[0081] The longitudinal sampling conditions determine locations 516. In some embodiments, locations 516 are determined by the image overlap. For example, in FIG. 5B the forward overlap between 518a and 518b. In some embodiments, a controller (e.g., at least one processor 102) executes trigger 134 to collect a plurality of measurements at locations 516.

[0082] In operation a measurement (e.g., sample or image) can be missed. For example, if an instrument failed a run-time check, there was cloud cover over target, or the like. In some embodiments, a controller (e.g., at least one processor 102) generates an updated flight plan including one or more updated flight path segments comprising flight directions such as flight directions 520 shown in FIG. 5C. In the example of directions 520 the aircraft revisits a portion of flight path 510. CA 3302383 Date reçue / Received date 2026-02-19 18

[0083] Flight path 510 may follow a feature such as river (506a), road (506b), or terrain. Or follow a space spanning path such as over a target of interest such as a settlement or a network of roads (e.g., series of driveways, logging road spurs). Note the location of features in an area of interest is often not random.

[0084] FIG. 6 is a conceptual diagram illustrating aspects of a flight plan. As shown, graphic 600 includes an aircraft 410, flying over terrain 602, along a (flat) flight path 512. Typically, Ground Control Station (GCS) software handles survey missions through a combination of GPS positions and trigger mechanisms. In order to plan a flight path, the GCS calculates a grid pattern based on desired Ground Sampling Distance (GSD), camera specifications (e.g., sensor size, focal length), flight altitude and the required image overlap (e.g., front and side). In FIG.6, 604 shows the angle of view of imagers projection toward and on terrain 602 where 606 shows the difference in GSD based on altitude. When then terrain rises to toward the aircraft or separation narrows the footprint of the imager shrinks with an effect on the overlap.

[0085] In some embodiments, sensor (e.g., camera) triggering methods may include distance-based triggering or time-based triggering. For distance-based triggering the camera triggers when the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) reaches specific GPS waypoints (e.g., shutter / sample locations 616) where software running in a controller (e.g., at least one processor 102) calculates the waypoints based on required image overlap. The flight path angle needs to be adjusted in order to maintain a consistent GSD, especially when flying over a variable terrain. Vector 608 shows the desired path angle to maintain a consistent GSD where vector 610 shows the maximum angle of climb available depending on some conditions (e.g., aircraft performance / density, limited altitude, etc.). Such methods tend to be more precise in consistent wind conditions.

[0086] Unlike time-based triggering, the time between the camera is triggered at each sample location 616 is varied in distance-based triggering. For example, in the flat flight path 510, more forward distance is covered in a shorter time and therefore, the camera triggers more often. However, in a steep climb such as path angle 608, the forward distance covered is less meaning more time is passed between each camera trigger. CA 3302383 Date reçue / Received date 2026-02-19 19

[0087] In time-based triggering, the sensor (e.g., camera) triggers at fixed time intervals. The GCS calculates the intervals based on UAV speed and the required overlap. Such methods, though simpler to implement, tend to be less reliable in variable wind conditions. Some parameters can be adjusted to increase the precision of the measurements. Such parameters include: flight altitude, front overlap (e.g., 75%-85%), side overlap (e.g., 60%- 70%), flight speed, camera angle (e.g., nadir vs. oblique) and flight pattern (e.g., grid, double grid, circular).

[0088] Weather conditions (e.g., wind) can affect image overlap. Higher image overlap can increase mapping accuracy; however, it requires more data (e.g., photos) and therefore more memory capacity. Some embodiments use correction technologies such as Post Processing Kinematic (PPK) or Real Time Kinematic (RTK) based GPS systems to increase the accuracy of the measurements. Some embodiments are able to adjust the measurements according to the terrain elevation.

[0089] In some embodiments, the measurements taken are atmospheric samples rather than ground mapping, or a combination of both measurements. Flight path 512b shows the flight path of the aircraft 410 when aircraft 410 is flying in over many levels to collect samples, e.g., atmospheric composition samples.

[0090] Turning to FIG. 7 which illustrates an example method 700 for the operation of a plurality of sensors associated with an aircraft (e.g., aircraft 410). Various embodiments of the plurality of sensors are described herein including in relation to FIG. 1 and FIG. 4.

For example, the controller loads the flight plan into a tablet to be used in flight by the crew of the selected aircraft.

[0097] At 712, the controller triggers a respective sensor in the selected plurality of sensors to acquire the telemetry. The timing of the trigger event is based on, at least, the longitudinal sampling condition. CA 3302383 Date reçue / Received date 2026-02-19 21

[0098] At 714, the controller updates the flight plan during the flight.

[0099] Turning to FIG. 8 which illustrates an example method 800 for the operation of a plurality of sensors associated with an aircraft (e.g., aircraft 410). Various embodiments of the plurality of sensors are described herein including plurality of sensors 100 and plurality of sensors 420.
