Composition for improving skin health comprising gynostemma pentaphyllum extract

Abstract

The present invention relates to a food composition for improving skin health, comprising a Gynostemma pentaphyllum extract or damulin B. The Gynostemma pentaphyllum extract or damulin B inhibited generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by ultraviolet irradiation in keratinocytes and increased expression of antioxidant proteins. In addition, a moisturizing effect was exhibited by regulating expression of genes involved in collagen synthesis and degradation in the skin and expression of hyaluronidase, thereby decreasing hyaluronidase responsible for degradation of hyaluronic acid, which is involved in moisture retention in the skin. Furthermore, through a human application test, effects of the Gynostemma pentaphyllum extract on improving skin wrinkles, skin moisturization, and skin roughness, and safety thereof, were confirmed. Therefore, the Gynostemma pentaphyllum extract or damulin B according to the present invention can be used as a food composition for improving skin health.
