[0001] SKINCARE COMPOSITIONS COMPRISING GLYCERIN

[0002] FIELD

[0003] The present invention relates to compositions suitable for use to moisturize the skin. More specifically, the present invention relates to compositions comprising relatively high levels of a humectant.

[0004] BACKGROUND

[0005] Moisturizers are mixtures of chemical agents specially designed to make the external layers of the skin or hair softer. Personal care compositions having moisturizing properties are known. Consumers expect such compositions to satisfy a range of requirements. Apart from the skin / hair-care effects which determine the intended application, value is placed on such diverse parameters as dermatological compatibility, appearance, sensory impression, stability in storage and ease of use. For example, glycerin is a humectant.

[0006] In order to reduce the amount of water lost to the external environment a traditional practice comprises applying a residual film of a composition including an occlusive agent or humectant to the skin's surface. An occlusive agent leaves a residual film which is a mechanical barrier preventing water from evaporating from the Stratum Corneum and from passing from the external environment through to the skin. A humectant however is a hygroscopic material which acts like a sponge, holding water close to the skin and permitting a higher level of water to be maintained in the Stratum Corneum.

[0007] Many humectants have been proposed in the past in a wide variety of skin care products. Glycerin is one known humectant. However, glycerin at higher concentrations has been known to provide undesirable sensory properties (e.g., too tacky) and can be difficult to formulate with.

[0008] Therefore there is an ongoing need for skincare compositions which provide moisturization but also maintain other desirable properties.

[0009] SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0010] One aspect of the invention pertains to a skincare composition comprising: a. greater than 40% of one or more humectants by total weight of the composition; b. a mixture of esters of glycerin; c. one or more emollients; d. one or more skin conditioners; and e. water.

[0011] In one or more embodiments, the composition is essentially free of isocetyl alcohol. In some embodiments, the humectant comprises glycerin. In one or more embodiments, the glycerin is present from about 41 to about 50 wt.% by total weight of the composition. In some embodiments, the one or more esters of glycerin comprises triesters of glycerin. In one or more embodiments, the one or more triesters of glycerin comprises caprylic / capric triglyceride. In some embodiments, the one or more esters of glycerin is present in an amount of about 1 wt.-% to about 12 wt.-%. In one or more embodiments, the one or more emollients is present in an amount of about 1 wt.-% to about 10 wt.-%. In some embodiments, the one or more emollients is selected from the group consisting of C12-C15 alkyl benzoate; cyclomethicone, dimethicone, and mixtures thereof. In one or more embodiments, the one or more emollients comprises dimethicone. In some embodiments, the one or more skin conditioners are selected from the group consisting of glycols, cationic surfactants, and combinations thereof. In one or more embodiments, the one or more skin conditioners comprises caprylyl glycol. In some embodiments, the composition further comprises a processed oat ingredient. In one or more embodiments, the water is present in an amount of less than about 30 wt.% by total weight of the composition.

In one or more embodiments, the composition further comprises one or more auxiliary agents selected from the group consisting of rheology modifiers, emulsifiers, preservatives, fragrances, and combinations thereof.

[0016] As used herein, “cosmetically / dermatologically acceptable” means suitable for use in contact with tissues (e.g., the skin or hair) without undue toxicity, incompatibility, instability, irritation, and / or allergic response, and the like.

Examples of suitable humectants nonexclusively include: 1) water soluble liquid polyols selected from the group comprising glycerin, propylene glycol, hexylene glycol, butylene glycol, dipropylene glycol. In particular embodiments, the humectant comprises glycerin.

[0024] The compositions described herein advantageously contain relatively high levels of glycerin. In one or more embodiments, the glycerin is present in an amount of greater than about 41 wt.% by total weight of the composition. In some embodiments, the glycerin is present in an amount ranging from about 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48. 49 or 50 wt.% to about 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, or 60 wt.% by total weight of the composition.

[0026] The compositions described herein may comprise one or more esters of glycerin, particularly triesters of glycerin. In further embodiments, the one or more triesters of glycerin comprises caprylic / capric triglyceride.

[0027] The one or more esters of glycerin may be present in an amount of about 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 wt.-% to about 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12 wt.-% by weight of the total composition. Examples of suitable emollients include those found in Chapter 35, pages 399-415 (Skin Feel Agents, by G Zocchi) in Handbook of Cosmetic Science and Technology (edited by A. Barel, M. Paye and H. Maibach, Published in 2001 by Marcel Dekker, Inc New York, NY), and include, but are not limited to, dimethicone, petrolatum, hexyldecyl stearate, glyceryl oleate, and plant, nut, and vegetable oils such as macadamia nut oil, rice bran oil, grape seed oil, palm oil, prim rose oil, hydrogenates peanut oil, and avocado oil.

[0035] Processed Oat Ingredient As used herein, the term “processed oat ingredient” refers to an ingredient that is typically derived from a part of the oat plant Avena saliva). Said ingredient can be either a processing (e.g., an extract, milling, fermenting) of one or more parts of the oat plant (e.g., grain, leaf, stem, seed)or can be a molecule found in the oat plant (e.g., beta-glucan, flavonoids, avenanthr amides, lipids, peptides, etc.). The definition is intended to cover processed oat ingredients which are derived from other sources other than oat (e.g., from another plant or chemically synthesized), but are otherwise associated with oat. In one or more embodiments, the processed oat ingredient is selected from the group consisting of oat extract, colloidal oatmeal, oat flour, oat bran, oat protein, oat peptide, oat oil, fermented oat, avenanthramides, beta-glucan, modified oat grain material (e.g., chemically, enzymatically-, microorganism-modified), and combinations thereof. As used herein, “colloidal oatmeal” means the powder resulting from the grinding and further processing of whole oat grain meeting United States Standards for Number 1 or Number 2 oats. The colloidal oatmeal has a particle size distribution as follows: not more than 3 percent of the total particles exceed 150 micrometers in size and not more than 20 percent of the total particles exceed 75 micrometers in size. Examples of suitable colloidal oatmeals include, but are not limited to, “Tech-0” available from the Beacon Corporation and colloidal oatmeals available from Quaker. Examples of suitable surfactants include those found in Chapter 37, pages 431- 450 (Classification of surfactants, by L. Oldenhove de Guertechin) in Handbook of Cosmetic Science and Technology (edited by A. Barel, M. Paye and H. Maibach, Published in 2001 by Marcel Dekker, Inc., New York, NY) and include, but are not limited to anionic, amphoteric, nonionic and cationic surfactants. Examples of amphoteric surfactants suitable for use in the present invention include, but are not limited to, amphocarboxylates such as alkylamphoacetates (mono or di); alkyl betaines; alkylamidoalkyl betaines (other than CAPB); alkylamidoalkyl sultaines; alkylamphophosphates; phosphorylated imidazolines such as phosphobetaines and pyrophosphobetaines; carboxy alkyl alkyl poly amines; alkylimino-dipropionates; alkylamphoglycinates (mono or di); alkylamphoproprionates (mono or di),); N-alkyl P-aminoproprionic acids; alkylpolyamino carboxylates; and mixtures thereof.

Examples of suitable pearlescent or opacifying agents include, but are not limited to mono or diesters of (a) fatty acids having from about 16 to about 22 carbon atoms and (b) either ethylene or propylene glycol; mono or diesters of (a) fatty acids having from about 16 to about 22 carbon atoms (b) a polyalkylene glycol of the formula: HO-(JO)a— H, wherein J is an alkylene group having from about 2 to about 3 carbon atoms; and a is 2 or 3; fatty alcohols containing from about 16 to about 22 carbon atoms; fatty esters of the formula: KCOOCH2L, wherein K and L independently contain from about 15 to about 21 carbon atoms; inorganic solids insoluble in the composition, and mixtures thereof.

[0074] The formulations were prepared as follows with ingredients as listed in Tables 1 and 2. We added water to the main vessel and started mixing and heating to 80°C. The glycerin and oat flour were added with continued mixing and heating until uniform. At about 70-72°C the caprylyl glycol was added, followed by the preservative (for those samples containing it), palmitic acid, stearic acid, cetearyl acohol, sodium cetearyl sulfate, isocetyl alcohol (for those samples containing it) or caprylic / capric triglyceride (for those samples containing it) and dimethicone. The mixing and heating continued until uniform. The mixture was homogenized for 15min at 72°C. The mixture was then allowed to start cooling. At around 40°C, ethylhexylglycerin was added and once uniform the oat oil, oat extract and panthenol (for those samples containing it) were added and again mixed until uniform. pH was adjusted for Ex. 2 and 3 to a pH of about 5.

[0078] Unaged compositions prepared in Ex. 1 were tested using an antimicrobial effectiveness test after preparation. This procedure was carried out using aseptic sterile techniques.

[0086] For each inoculum, about 20g of composition was added to individual sterile capped bacteriological containers. The inoculum tube was vortexed for about 15 seconds. About 0.2 mL of inoculum was transferred to the bacteriological container using a micropipette with sterile tip. The composition with inoculum was thoroughly mixed for about 1 minute using a sterile spatula. The inoculated composition was stored at 22.5 + / - 2.5°C. Samples were tested and evaluated for microbial recovery at 7 days, 14 days and 28 days post inoculation. Before sampling, inoculated composition was mixed to ensure homogeneity. 1 gram aliquot was removed from each inoculated sample container and diluted in 9 mL of neutralizer in a screw top tube with glass beads, which is shaken, vortexed until uniformly mixed. Serial dilutions were prepared from this 1 : 10 dilution four times. Plating was performed in duplicate on 90mm plates with Tryptic Soy Agar (TSA) for bacteria, on 150mm plates with Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) for fungus and on 90mm plates with Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) for yeast. Samples were incubated at 22.5 + / - 2.5°C for 3- 5 days for yeast, 22.5 + / - 2.5°C for 3-7 days for A. brasiliensis, and 32.5 + / - 2.5°C for 3-5 days for bacteria. Plates were read and colonies counted, and log reduction was determined by calculated log of inoculum density per gram at the starting point vs log of recovery at 7 days, 14 days and 28 day

[0088] A. brasiliensis, also known as mold. For mold, passing would be greater or equal to 0 at D14 and greater or equal to 1 at D28. The results for A. brasiliensis are shown in Table 3. We have shown that compositions with 45% glycerin and have less than 30% water with isocetyl alcohol in the composition did not pass micro testing for mold even with additional preservative boosters. Although C9 passed, it is noted that the sample has 35% water.

Claims

What is claimed is:

1. A skincare composition comprising: a. greater than 40 wt.% of one or more humectants by total weight of the composition; b. a mixture of esters of glycerin; c. one or more emollients; d. one or more skin conditioners; and e. less than 35 wt.% water by total weight of the composition.

2. The skincare composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is essentially free of isocetyl alcohol.

3. The skincare composition of claim 1 or 2, wherein the humectant comprises glycerin.

4. The skincare composition of any of claims 1-3, wherein the glycerin is present from about 41 to about 50 wt.% by total weight of the composition.

5. The skincare composition of any of claims 1-4, wherein the one or more esters of glycerin comprises triesters of glycerin.

6. The skincare composition of any of claims 1-5, wherein the one or more triesters of glycerin comprises caprylic / capric triglyceride.

7. The skincare composition of any of claims 1-6, wherein the one or more esters of glycerin is present in an amount of about 1 wt.-% to about 12 wt.-%.

8. The skincare composition of any of claims 1-7, wherein the one or more emollients is present in an amount of about 1 wt.-% to about 10 wt.-%.

9. The skincare composition of any of claims 1-8, wherein the one or more emollients is selected from the group consisting of C12-C15 alkyl benzoate; cyclomethicone, dimethicone, and mixtures thereof.

10. The skincare composition of any of claims 1-9, wherein the one or more emollients comprises dimethicone.

11. The skincare composition of any of claims 1-10, wherein the one or more skin conditioners are selected from the group consisting of glycols, cationic surfactants, and combinations thereof.

12. The skincare composition of any of claims 1-11, wherein the one or more skin conditioners comprises caprylyl glycol.

13. The skincare composition of any of claims 1-12, wherein the water is present in an amount of less than about 33 wt.% by total weight of the composition.

14. A skincare composition comprising: a. about 42 to about 50 wt.-% glycerin by total weight of the composition; b. from about 1 to about 10 wt.% caprylic / capric triglyceride by total weight of the composition; c. from about 1 wt.-% to about 10 wt.-% of dimethicone by total weight of the composition; d. from about 0.01 wt.-% to about 3 wt.-% of caprylyl glycol by total weight of the composition; e. from about 0.01 wt.-% to about 3 wt.-% of a processed oat ingredient by total weight of the composition; and f. from about 25 wt.% to about 32 wt.% of water.

15. A method of moisturizing skin, the method comprising applying to the skin the skincare composition of any of claims 1-14.
