Method and system for very low frequency communications with limited power

Abstract

The methods described herein refer to a VLF data communication system and method that allows a VLF transmitter or receiver to operate underground from a single power source located in the same location for an extended period. The data to be transmitted is encapsulated in a single data packet for transmission, minimizing the power-up time of both the transmitter and receiver. One or more receivers process the data packet to synchronize with the transmitter's symbol clock and then demodulate the encapsulated data. The receiver can also use the synchronization information to control external devices. The methods employed can be implemented in a low-power microcontroller unit (MCU) to further reduce energy consumption.
