Abstract

Automated system and method for the early predictive assessment and separation of live aquatic biomass (ova, larvae, fry, smolts). It overcomes the damage caused by solid-contact mechanical sorters and the inability of surface optical systems to detect internal anomalies. The system comprises: (i) a fluidic trajectory singulation mechanism; (ii) non-destructive penetrating interrogation means (OCT or 1-100 MHz ultrasound) that acquire three-dimensional data of internal structures (swim bladder, myocardium, yolk sac, notochord); (iii) an electronic control logic unit that predicts individual feed conversion potential by cross-referencing such data with ontogenetic models; and (iv) remote field spatial deflection means. These media are segmented according to mass: they apply directed fluidic pressure gradients for biomass from 1 g to 200 g, and focused acoustic radiation pressure or electromagnetic radiation for biomass less than 1 g, diverting specimens towards classification channels without mechanical contact. It operates in continuous in-line flow without sedation, using internal anatomical parameters such as swim bladder volume to predict productive performance.
