Abstract

The present invention provides a method for reducing at least one tobacco-specific nitrosamine or a precursor thereof in tobacco, comprising modifying a tobacco plant by increasing the activity and expression of a LBD (lateral organ boundary domain) nitrogen-responsive transcription factor. The present invention also provides a tobacco cell, a tobacco plant, a tobacco plant propagation material, a harvested leaf, a processed tobacco or a tobacco product obtainable according to the present invention.
