AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing wireless local area networks (WLANs) have challenges in resource utilization efficiency and band roaming latency, especially when multiple devices are shared and operated in different bands.

Method used

Multi-band operation and on-channel tunneling (OCT) technology are used to switch between different frequency bands through the OCT process, seamless basic service set (BSS) switching and communication between STA and AP are achieved.

Benefits of technology

It improves the utilization efficiency of WLAN resources, reduces the roaming delay in frequency bands, realizes seamless communication between STA and AP, and supports efficient operation of multi-band and multi-device.

Abstract

Embodiments of switching between BSSs using On-Channel Tunneling (OCT) are generally described herein. The OCT process is used to scan and associate with a co-located or non-co-located peer AP. The OCT process includes: sending a probe / reauthentication / reassociation request frame from a STA to a peer AP using an OCT request frame; and receiving a probe / reauthentication / reassociation response frame from a peer AP using another OCT request frame. The communication between the STA and the AP is in the same frequency band as the OCT communication between the AP and the peer AP or in a different frequency band.
