Description

Technical Field

[0001] This disclosure relates to cascaded display driver integrated circuits (ICs) and multi-view display devices including the same. Background Technology

[0002] With the development of the information age, various types of display devices are being developed. Examples of display devices include liquid crystal displays (LCDs), plasma display panels (PDPs), organic light-emitting displays (OLEDs), and micro-LEDs.

[0003] Typically, such display devices are used individually, but there are systems that connect and use multiple display devices to achieve larger display devices such as multi-view devices, digital signage, etc.

[0004] Thus, in order to connect and use multiple display devices, image data signals and control data signals are sent separately from the host system to each display device, and the image data and control data received by each display device are processed and displayed on the screen. Furthermore, when display devices are connected sequentially and data streams are sent from the host system, each display device can identify its own data and output it to the screen. [0040] The purpose of this disclosure is to provide a display driver IC, which can be cascaded, capable of recognizing data provided from a host and outputting that data to a display panel connected to the display driver IC.

[0041] Another objective of this disclosure is to provide a multi-view device including cascaded display driver ICs.

[0042] Figure 1 This is a diagram illustrating an example configuration of a multi-view display device.

[0043] exist Figure 1 In one or more examples, a multi-view display system may include a host 10, a timing controller 20, and multiple display devices 100, 200, 300, ... and 1000.

[0044] The host 10 can generate source data and timing signals and provide them to the timing controller 20. The host 10 may include, for example, a personal computer (PC), a server, an integrated circuit included in an entertainment system, a system-on-a-chip (SoC), an application processor (AP), a mobile AP, etc.

[0045] The host 10 can control the operation of the timing controller 20. The host 10 and the timing controller 20 can be connected through various standard interfaces used in industry.

[0046] The timing controller 20 can receive source data and timing signals from the host 10, such as the vertical synchronization signal Vsync, the horizontal synchronization signal Hsync, the data enable signal DE, and the clock CLK. The timing controller 20 can generate control data 31 based on the timing signals provided from the host 10 to control the operating timing of the display driver ICs 120, 220, 320, ..., 1020. The generated control data 31 can be provided from the timing controller 20 to the first display driver IC 120.

[0047] The timing controller 20 can provide the generated image data 32 and control data 31 to the display driver IC 120 in a serial data packet format. (Refer to...) Figure 3 The data provided by the timing controller 20 to the display driver IC 120 will be described in more detail below.

[0048] The timing controller 20 can be connected to multiple display devices 100, 200, 300, ... and 1000. The timing controller 20 can be directly connected to the first display driver IC 120 of the first display device 100.

[0049] A multi-view display system may include multiple display devices 100, 200, 300, ..., and 1000. Each of the display devices 100, 200, 300, ..., and 1000 can be connected to another display device or timing controller 20 via display driver ICs 120, 220, 320, ..., and 1020 mounted on the display device. The multiple display driver ICs 120, 220, 320, ..., and 1020 included in the multiple display devices 100, 200, 300, ..., and 1000 have a cascaded connection structure.

[0050] In this specification, when multiple display devices 100, 200, 300, ..., 1000 are cascaded, this means that the first display device 100 and the second display device 200 are connected to each other, and the second display device 200 and the third display device 300 are connected to each other. Here, in the relationship between the first display device 100 and the second display device 200, the first display device 100 corresponds to the front-end display device, and the second display device 200 corresponds to the back-end display device. Similarly, in the relationship between the second display device 200 and the third display device 300, the second display device 200 corresponds to the front-end display device, and the third display device 300 corresponds to the back-end display device.

[0051] In other words, image data 32 and control data 31 provided from timing controller 20 are provided to multiple display devices 100, 200, 300, ..., and 1000. The first display device 100 can provide a data packet 30 including image data 32 and control data 31 from timing controller 20. The first display device 100 can display an image on display panel 110 based on the image data 32 included in the provided data packet 30, and can also provide the data packet 30 to the second display device 200.

[0052] Similarly, the second display device 200 can display an image on the display panel 210 based on image data 32 included in the data packet 30 provided from the first display device 100. The second display device 200 can also provide the data packet 30 to the third display device 300.

[0053] Thus, multiple sequentially connected display devices 100, 200, 300, ..., 1000 output images based on image data 32 included in data packets 30 provided from the timing controller 20 or from display devices connected to the front end of the multiple display devices 100, 200, 300, ..., 1000. Subsequently, the display devices can also send data packets 30 to display devices connected to the back end. (Refer to...) Figure 2 A more detailed description of the configuration of the multiple display devices 100, 200, 300, ... and 1000.

[0054] Figure 2 This is a block diagram illustrating one or more examples of display devices. Figure 2 The description is based on the first display device 100, and the described configuration can be applied in the same way to other display devices 100, 200, 300, ... and 1000 connected to the back end of the first display device 100.

[0055] exist Figure 2 For example, the first display device 100 may include a first display panel 110 and a first display driver IC 120.

[0056] In the first display panel 110, multiple sub-pixels can be formed in a matrix in portions where multiple data lines and gate lines are orthogonal to each other, thereby forming a pixel array. For example, a pixel may consist of four sub-pixels including a red sub-pixel, a green sub-pixel, a blue sub-pixel, and a white sub-pixel, but this disclosure is not limited thereto.

[0057] The first display panel 110 may include, but is not limited to, flat or flexible panels such as LCD, OLED, micro-LED, FED, etc. Although in Figure 2 Not shown, but the first display panel 110 may include a gate driver that provides gate signals to a plurality of vertical lines. The gate driver may employ an in-panel gate (GIP) method in which the gate driver is mounted on the display panel.

[0058] The first display panel 110 can output an image based on the data voltage and scan signal provided from the first display driver IC 120.

[0059] The first display driver IC 120 may include a receiver 130, a decoder 140, a drive unit 150, a panel identifier (PID) modulator 160, an encoder 170, and a transmitter 180.

[0060] Receiver 130 can receive data packets 30 from the outside. Figure 2 The receiver 130 shown receives data packets 30 provided from the timing controller 20. In contrast, a receiver included in the second display driver IC 220, which is connected to the back end of the first display driver IC 120, can receive data packets 30 from the first display driver IC 120.

[0061] The data packet 30 received by receiver 130 can be decoded by decoder 140. Decoder 140 can decode the serial data packet 30 and convert it into a parallel data packet 30.

[0062] Reference Figure 3The data packet 30 received by the first display driver IC 120 from the timing controller 20 is described in more detail.

[0063] Figure 3 This is a diagram illustrating an example of the structure of a data packet 30 provided to one or more display driver ICs.

[0064] exist Figure 3 In this context, data packet 30 is a set of data provided during a horizontal (1H) time period when data is written to a scan line of the display panel. Data packet 30 may include control data 31 and image data 32 provided to each of the plurality of display devices 100, 200, 300, ..., 1000. The end portion of data packet 30 may include a blank time period 33 that demarcates the end of the current data packet 30 from other subsequent data packets. In data packet 30 received from timing controller 20, image data 32 may span another horizontal time period or frame following the blank time period 33 in the current frame.

[0065] For image display purposes, control data 31 may include data for controlling display panel 110 and display driver IC 120. Control data 31 may include a panel identifier (PID) indicating how many of the plurality of display devices 100, 200, 300, ..., 1000 have been connected before the connected display device provided with data packet 30.

[0066] like Figure 3 As shown, the image data 32 included in the data packet 30 can be classified according to the panel identifier PID. In the example, the image data 32 corresponding to the image to be displayed by the first display device 100 can be classified as PID0, while the image data 32 corresponding to the image to be displayed by the second display device 200 can be classified as PID1. If the multi-view display system of this disclosure includes n display devices, the data packet 30 can include image data 32 classified as PID0 to PIDn-1.

[0067] Each of the multiple display devices 100, 200, 300, ..., 1000 can identify how many display devices have been connected before itself in the multiple display devices by using the panel identifier included in the control data 31. Moreover, each of the multiple display devices 100, 200, 300, ..., 1000 can extract image data 32 corresponding to the provided corresponding panel identifier from the data packet 30 and output it as an image.

[0068] When data packet 30 is provided from timing controller 20 to first display device 100, panel identifier can be set to "0". This means that first display device 100 is the first device connected to timing controller 20.

[0069] The first display driver IC 120 can obtain the panel identifier from the decoded data packet 30. Since the panel identifier is set to "0", the first display driver IC 120 identifies the first image data 32 (included in the image data 32 within the data packet) as... Figure 3 The data (PID0) should be displayed on the first display panel 110.

[0070] The first display driver IC 120 can provide the first image data 32 to the driving unit 150, and the driving unit 150 can generate a data voltage to be provided to the first display panel 110 based on the provided image data 32.

[0071] Simultaneously, the panel identifier used to extract image data 32 can be provided to the panel identifier modulator 160. The panel identifier modulator 160 can then modulate the panel identifier so that the back-end display device receiving data packet 30 can recognize the connection sequence. For example, the panel identifier modulator 160 can generate a modulated panel identifier by adding 1 to the panel identifier. Since the panel identifier provided to the first display driver IC 120 in the control data 31 is "0", the panel identifier modulator 160 can modulate the panel identifier to "1" and provide "1" to the encoder 170. In some embodiments, the panel identifier modulator 160 can generate a modulated panel identifier by subtracting 1 from the panel identifier.

[0072] Encoder 170 can generate a data packet 30 from image data 32 and image data 31 including a modulated panel identifier. Except for the modulated panel identifier, the data packet 30 generated by encoder 170 is the same as the data packet 30 received by receiver 130. The data packet 30 provided from transmitter 180 to back-end display driver IC includes the same image data 32 as the data packet 30 provided to front-end display driver IC.

[0073] In summary, a data packet 30, including image data 32 and control data 31, from a timing controller or front-end display driver IC is provided to the display driver IC according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The display driver IC extracts the image data 32 to be displayed on the display panel using a panel identifier included in the control data 31. The display driver IC then modulates the panel identifier so that the back-end display device can use the modulated panel identifier in the image display.

[0074] In the multi-view display system of this disclosure, each of the multiple display devices does not possess a unique panel identifier indicating how many display devices have been connected prior to each corresponding connected display device. Each of the multiple display devices extracts image data 32 to be output by itself solely by using the panel identifier included in the data packet 30 provided from the timing controller or the front-end display device, and outputs the extracted image data 32 through the display panel.

[0075] Therefore, when a failure occurs in any of the multiple display devices and a replacement is needed, normal operation can be ensured by replacing the faulty device with the same display device as the multiple display devices, without any other setup.

[0076] In addition, when a multi-view display system is to be configured with a new layout, only the order of deployment or arrangement of multiple display devices needs to be changed, thus eliminating the need for separate setup operations, which has a beneficial effect on maintenance.

[0077] Figure 4 This is a block diagram illustrating one or more examples of display driver ICs. Figure 5 It is a timing diagram used to describe the operation of the display driver IC. Figure 6 and Figure 7 This is a timing diagram used to describe the timing delay operation of a display driver IC according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0078] exist Figure 4 middle, Figure 4 The display driver IC shown may also include a delay unit 155 for delaying the data voltage supplied to the display panel 110.

[0079] The delay unit 155 can delay the image data 32 included in the data packet 30 for a certain period of time before providing it to the drive unit 150. Specifically, the delay unit 155 can generate a compensation time based on the panel identifier included in the control data 31, and can delay the image data 32 by the delay time, and then provide the image data 32 to the drive unit 150. As a result, the display panel 110 displays an image that has been delayed by the compensation time from the time of displaying the original image through the operation of the delay unit 155.

[0080] exist Figure 5The diagram shows a timing diagram describing the general driving characteristics of the display driver IC 120. The control data 31 included in the data packet 30 may include a load signal indicating the timing of outputting data voltage to the channel connecting the display driver IC 120 and the display panel 110. In one or more examples, the drive unit 150 triggered by the load signal may provide the data voltage to the display panel 110.

[0081] exist Figure 6 The diagram shows an example of the general driving characteristics of driver IC 120 when the delay operation performed by delay unit 155 is not performed.

[0082] As described above, a multi-view display system consisting of multiple display devices 100, 200, 300, ..., 1000 connected sequentially receives data packets 30 from a timing controller 20. Each display driver IC included in the display device extracts image data 32 from the data packets 30 provided by the timing controller 20 or a display driver IC connected to the front end, and again provides the data packets 30 to a back-end display driver IC.

[0083] During the process of providing data packet 30 to another display driver IC, the timing of each display driver IC outputting to the display panel, i.e., the timing of providing the load signal, may be slightly delayed. This delay could be caused by the signal transmission time between display driver ICs and the data processing time of the display driver ICs.

[0084] exist Figure 6 The diagram shows the output timing of a load signal PID0Load from a display driver IC included in the first display device 100 and the data voltage supplied to the display panel in response to the load signal. Subsequently, the diagram shows a load signal PID1Load from a display driver IC included in the second display device 200 after the aforementioned delay time Td_ic, in which a data voltage is output to the display panel in response to the load signal.

[0085] The display device connected to the back end of the second display device also outputs data voltage, with a delay time compared to the front-end display device.

[0086] In other words, the display device connected to the back end outputs an image with a delay time Td_ic compared to the front end display device. Over time, the delay in image output accumulates, and the user can perceive this delay. Therefore, the display driver IC included in the display device needs to compensate for this delay and output the image to the display panel in a synchronized timing.

[0087] exist Figure 7The diagram shows an example of how delay time is compensated by delay operation of a delay unit included in the display driver IC.

[0088] Each display driver IC included in a plurality of display devices 100, 200, 300, ... and 1000 can generate a compensation time based on the panel identifier included in the received data packet 30, and can delay the data voltage by the compensation time before providing the data voltage to the display panel.

[0089] The first display driver IC 120, which is connected to the very front of a cascaded display driver IC, requires the longest compensation time to synchronize the image output timing with the display driver IC connected to the very back. Assuming n is the number of cascaded display devices, the compensation time Tcp_pid0 generated by the first display driver IC 120 is Td_icx(n-1). The first display driver IC 120 delays this compensation time Tcp_pid0 and generates a load signal, then outputs the data voltage to the first display panel 110.

[0090] The display driver IC connected to the back end can also generate latency in the same way. The compensation time Tcp_pidi generated by the i-th connected display driver IC is represented by the following general formula.

[0091] Tcp_pidi = Td_ic x(n - PIDi-1)

[0092] Here, n is the number of connected display devices, Td_ic is the delay time of each display driver IC, and PIDi is the panel identifier of the i-th connected display driver IC.

[0093] Thus, the multi-view display device according to embodiments of this disclosure can compensate for image output delays caused by data transmission by providing data voltages to the display panels at delayed timings according to the compensation time generated by each cascaded display driver IC. Therefore, no delay difference occurs in the images output to each of the multiple display panels.

[0094] Furthermore, as mentioned above, the compensation time generated by the display driver IC can be generated based on the panel identifier provided to each display driver IC. Therefore, when configuring a multi-view display system with a new layout, the delay setting does not need to be changed even if the deployment or arrangement order of the multiple display devices is changed.

[0095] Although this disclosure includes specific examples, it will be apparent upon understanding the disclosure of this application that various changes in form and detail may be made in these examples without departing from the spirit and scope of the claims and their equivalents.
