AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing ultrasound systems have difficulty distinguishing between veins and arteries, which may lead to unintentional puncture of adjacent arteries, causing patient injury and discomfort, and requiring unplanned intervention to stop arterial bleeding.

Method used

Using an ultrasound imaging system, multiple distinguishing features (such as vessel diameter, wall thickness, image pulsation, depth, relative position, and cross-sectional shape) are used to identify blood vessels. The system is further distinguished by logic modules and possible artificial intelligence modules. Combined with pressure sensors to detect pressure pulsation data, it provides real-time visualization and alerts to guide clinicians.

Benefits of technology

It improves the accuracy of distinguishing between veins and arteries, reduces the risk of arterial puncture, reduces patient harm and discomfort, and improves the safety and efficiency of the procedure.

Abstract

An ultrasound imaging system and a method for identifying one or more of a plurality of blood vessels are disclosed. The ultrasound imaging system includes an ultrasound probe including a plurality of ultrasound transducers configured to acquire ultrasound images, a processor and a non-transitory computer readable medium having logic stored thereon that, when executed by the processor, is configured to perform operations including receiving ultrasound imaging data, detecting one or more blood vessels within the ultrasound imaging data, identifying at least one of the one or more blood vessels as an artery or a vein, and presenting a visualization of at least a subset of the one or more blood vessels on a display screen. The logic, when executed by the processor, can cause performance of further operations including identifying the at least one blood vessel as an artery based on at least one distinguishing feature of a plurality of distinguishing features of blood vessel types.
