Description

[0001] Cross-reference to related applications

[0002] This application claims priority and benefit to Korean Patent Application No. 10-2021-0001063 filed on January 5, 2021 and Korean Patent Application No. 10-2022-0000511 filed on January 3, 2022, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. Technical Field

[0003] One or more embodiments relate to compositions and organic light-emitting devices including the same. Background Technology

[0004] Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are self-emitting devices that produce full-color images. Compared to other electronic devices, OLEDs offer wide viewing angles, high contrast, short response times, and superior characteristics in terms of brightness, driving voltage, and response speed.

[0005] For example, an organic light-emitting device includes an anode, a cathode, and an organic layer located between the anode and the cathode, wherein the organic layer includes an emitting layer. A hole transport region may be located between the anode and the emitting layer, and an electron transport region may be located between the emitting layer and the cathode. Holes supplied from the anode can move towards the emitting layer through the hole transport region, and electrons supplied from the cathode can move towards the emitting layer through the electron transport region. Holes and electrons can recombine in the emitting layer to generate excitons. These excitons transition from an excited state to the ground state, thereby producing light, such as visible light. [0081] As used herein, “about” or “approximately” includes the stated value and means within an acceptable range of deviations from the specific value, as determined by a person skilled in the art taking into account the measurement in question and the errors associated with the measurement of the specific quantity (i.e., limitations of the measurement system). For example, “about” may mean within one or more standard deviations relative to the stated value, or within ±30%, 20%, 10%, or 5%.

[0082] Composition

[0083] The composition comprises a first compound, a second compound, and a third compound. The first compound, the second compound, and the third compound are the same as those described herein.

[0084] The first, second, and third compounds included in the composition are different from each other. That is, the composition may include three or more compounds that are different from each other.

[0085] The composition can satisfy the following condition 3:

[0086] Condition 3

[0087] E HOMO_C1 -0.4eV≤E HOMO_C2 ≤E HOMO_C1 +0.1eV

[0088] In condition 3, E HOMO_C1 E represents the energy level of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of the first compound. HOMO_C2 denoted as HOMO energy level value of the second compound, where eV is electron volt.

[0089] In this respect, the HOMO energy level value was measured using an atmospheric pressure photoelectron spectroscopy apparatus (manufactured by RIKEN KEIKI Co., Ltd.: AC3).

[0090] When the composition satisfies condition 3, hole trapping in the second compound is suppressed, and therefore, the direct formation of excitons in the second compound due to electron-hole recombination can be prevented. That is, the following mechanism can be achieved: excitons are first formed by the sensitizer (first compound), and then the excitons move to the second compound, which is the final luminescent material, through energy transfer, and then emit light.

[0091] The composition can satisfy the following condition 4:

[0092] Condition 4

[0093] R(HOD) H / R(HOD)0≤1.07

[0094] In condition 4, R(HOD) H R(HOD)0 is the relative HOD value of the composition comprising the first compound, the second compound, and the third compound, and R(HOD)0 is the relative HOD value of the composition comprising the first compound and the third compound.

[0095] In this respect, the relative HOD value refers to the ratio of the applied voltage required to provide a specific current density to a single hole-only device (HOD), and the relative HOD value is obtained by dividing the voltage applied to a HOD doped with the final luminescent material (the second compound) by the voltage applied to an undoped HOD. The HOD structure may have, for example, the following structure, and its fabrication method is the same as described herein:

[0096] ITO / HAT-CN (10nm) / NPB (50nm) / Test Material (40nm) / NPB (10nm) / Al

[0097] The first compound can satisfy either condition 1 or condition 2:

[0098] Condition 1

[0099] The first compound contains a transition metal.

[0100] Condition 2

[0101] The energy difference between the triplet energy level and the singlet energy level of the first compound is 0.4 eV or less, and the first compound can emit delayed fluorescence.

[0102] According to one or more embodiments, the first compound may satisfy condition 1.

[0103] For example, the first compound may include an organometallic compound represented by formula 101:

[0104] Formula 101

[0105] M 11 (L 11 ) n11 (L 12 ) n12

[0227] Figure 1 Description

[0228] Figure 1 This is a schematic diagram of an organic light-emitting device 10 according to one or more embodiments. In the following text, reference will be made to... Figure 1 The structure and manufacturing method of an organic light-emitting device according to examples of this disclosure are described.

[0229] Figure 1 The organic light-emitting device 10 includes: a first electrode 11; a second electrode 19; and an organic layer 10A located between the first electrode 11 and the second electrode 19 and including an emission layer 15, wherein the organic layer 10A includes the composition described above.

[0230] In one or more embodiments, the composition may be included in the emitting layer 15.

[0231] In one or more embodiments, the emitter layer 15 may include a sensitizer, a dopant, and a host, wherein the sensitizer may include the first compound of the composition, the dopant may include the second compound of the composition, and the host may include at least one third compound of the composition.

[0232] In one or more embodiments, the emitting layer 15 may emit blue light.

[0233] In one or more embodiments, the organic layer 10A may include a hole transport region 12 located between the first electrode 11 and the emitter layer 15, and an electron transport region 17 located between the emitter layer 15 and the second electrode 19.

[0234] A substrate may be additionally placed below the first electrode 11 or above the second electrode 19. Any substrate available in the art for use in organic light-emitting devices may be used as the substrate, and the substrate may be a glass substrate or a transparent plastic substrate, each possessing excellent mechanical strength, thermal stability, transparency, surface smoothness, ease of handling, and water resistance.

[0235] First electrode 11

[0236] In one or more embodiments, the first electrode 11 can be formed by depositing or sputtering a material for forming the first electrode 11 onto a substrate. The first electrode 11 may be an anode. The material used to form the first electrode 11 may be a material having a high work function to facilitate hole injection.

[0237] The first electrode 11 can be a reflective electrode, a semi-transparent electrode, or a transmissive electrode. When the first electrode 11 is a transmissive electrode, the material used to form the first electrode can be indium tin oxide (ITO), indium zinc oxide (IZO), tin oxide (SnO2), zinc oxide (ZnO), or a combination thereof, but the embodiments of this disclosure are not limited thereto. In one or more embodiments, when the first electrode 11 is a semi-transparent electrode or a reflective electrode, the material used to form the first electrode 11 can be magnesium (Mg), silver (Ag), aluminum (Al), aluminum-lithium (Al-Li), calcium (Ca), magnesium-indium (Mg-In), magnesium-silver (Mg-Ag), or a combination thereof, but the embodiments of this disclosure are not limited thereto.

[0238] The first electrode 11 may have a single-layer structure or a multi-layer structure including two or more layers.

[0239] Launch layer 15

[0240] The emitter layer 15 may include a host, a dopant, and a sensitizer.

[0241] The emitting layer 15 can emit fluorescence. That is, the dopant can be a fluorescent material. The fluorescent emitting layer 15 is clearly different from the emitting layers in the related fields of phosphorescence.

[0242] It is generally known that triplet excitons remain in the excited state for extended periods, thus contributing to a reduction in the lifetime of organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). However, according to this disclosure, the dopant is used to reduce the time that triplet excitons of the sensitizer remain in the excited state. Therefore, OLEDs incorporating the dopant can have an extended lifetime.

[0243] In one or more embodiments, the greater the number of triplet excitons in the sensitizer, the more excess energy accumulates in the sensitizer, leading to an increase in the number of thermal excitons. That is, the amount of triplet excitons in the sensitizer is proportional to the amount of thermal excitons. Thermal excitons break various chemical bonds of compounds included in the emitter layer 15 and / or compounds present at the boundaries of the emitter layer 15, causing the compounds to decompose. Therefore, the lifetime of the organic light-emitting device can be reduced. However, according to this disclosure, by using a dopant, the triplet excitons of the sensitizer can be rapidly converted into singlet excitons of the dopant, ultimately reducing the amount of thermal excitons and increasing the lifetime of the organic light-emitting device.

[0244] In this respect, “thermal excitons” can be generated or increased by: exciton-exciton annihilation due to the increased density of excitons in emitter layer 15, exciton-charge annihilation due to charge imbalance in emitter layer 15, and / or free radical ion pairs due to the transport of electrons between the host and the dopant.

[0245] Furthermore, since the dopant emits fluorescence, the resulting organic light-emitting device can have high color purity. For example, because the excited singlet excitons of the dopant rapidly transition to the ground state at room temperature, the accumulation of singlet excitons in the ground state can be prevented and the lifetime of the organic light-emitting device can be improved.

[0246] In one or more embodiments, singlet and triplet excitons are formed at the body in the emitter layer 15, and the singlet and triplet excitons formed in the body are transmitted through... Energy transfer (FRET) is transferred to the sensitizer and then to the dopant. To obtain high efficiency and long lifetime of the organic light-emitting device, the thermal excitons generated in the emitter layer 15 can be controlled, and for this purpose, optimization of energy transfer is required.

[0247] In one or more embodiments, when the sensitizer satisfies ΔE ST In a thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitter with conditions ≤0.4 electron volts (eV), 25% of the singlet excitons formed in the host are transferred to the sensitizer via FRET, and the energy of 75% of the triplet excitons formed in the host is transferred to the singlet and triplet states of the sensitizer. From these energies, the energy transferred to the triplet state undergoes a reverse intersystem crossing to the singlet state, and then the singlet state energy of the sensitizer is transferred to the dopant via FRET.

[0248] Furthermore, in one or more embodiments, when the sensitizer is an organometallic compound containing at least one type of metal from the first row of the periodic table, the second row of the periodic table, or the third row of the periodic table, approximately 75% of the triplet excitons formed in the host are transferred to the sensitizer via Dexter energy transfer, and approximately 25% of the singlet excitons formed in the host are transferred to the singlet and triplet states of the sensitizer. The energy transferred to the singlet state undergoes intersystem crossing (ISC) to the triplet state, and then the triplet state energy of the sensitizer is transferred to the dopant via FRET.

[0249] Therefore, by transferring all singlet and triplet excitons generated in the main body of the emitter layer 15 to the dopant, an organic light-emitting device with improved efficiency can be obtained. Furthermore, since the energy loss of the organic light-emitting device can be significantly reduced, the lifetime characteristics of the organic light-emitting device can be improved.

[0250] The amount of the sensitizer in the emitting layer 15 can be from about 5% to about 50% by weight, based on the amount of the emitting layer. Within these ranges, efficient energy transfer in the emitting layer 15 can be achieved, and thus, an organic light-emitting device with high efficiency and long lifetime can be obtained.

[0251] The emitter layer 15 may be composed of the host, dopant, and sensitizer. That is, the emitter layer 15 may not further include materials other than the host, dopant, and sensitizer.

[0252] The thickness of the emission layer 15 can be approximately about For example, about about Within these ranges, excellent light emission characteristics can be obtained without a significant increase in driving voltage when the thickness of the emitting layer 15 is within these ranges.

[0890] Evaluation Example 2: Measurement of OLED lifetime and external quantum efficiency

[0891] (1) For each of the organic light-emitting devices fabricated according to Comparative Example 1, Examples 1-1 to 1-3, and Comparative Examples 1-1 to 1-3, the external quantum efficiency (EQE) and lifetime were evaluated. The results are shown in... Figures 4 to 7 middle.

[0892] First, refer to Figure 4 and 5 In Examples 1-1 to 1-3, some of the triplet excitons generated in SP001, which is used as a phosphorescent photosensitizer, are lost via FD1, and the efficiency is slightly lower compared to Comparative Example 1. However, its lifetime is significantly increased.

[0893] On the other hand, reference Figure 6 and 7 In Comparative Examples 1-1 to 1-3, even compared to Examples 1-1 to 1-3 which include the same amount of dopant, the reduction in external quantum efficiency is significant, and conversely, the lifetime is significantly reduced compared to Comparative Example 1. This is because the triplet excitons generated in SP001 are transferred to FD-A via dexter energy transfer and therefore do not contribute to optical emission, and are degraded due to nonradiative decay.

[0894] (2) For each of the organic light-emitting devices fabricated according to Comparative Examples 2, Examples 2-1 to 2-3, and Comparative Examples 2-1 to 2-3, the external quantum efficiency (EQE) and lifetime were evaluated. The results are shown in... Figures 8 to 11 middle.

[0895] First, refer to Figure 8 and 9 In Examples 2-1 to 2-3, some of the triplet excitons generated in SP002, which is used as a TADF sensitizer, are lost via FD1, and the efficiency is slightly lower compared to Comparative Example 2. However, its lifetime is significantly increased.

[0896] On the other hand, reference Figure 10 and 11 In Comparative Examples 2-1 to 2-3, even compared to Examples 2-1 to 2-3 which include the same amount of dopant, the reduction in external quantum efficiency is significant, and conversely, the lifetime is significantly reduced compared to Comparative Example 1. This is because the triplet excitons generated in SP002 are transferred to FD-A via dexter energy transfer and therefore do not contribute to optical emission, and are degraded due to nonradiative decay.

[0897] (3) For each of the organic light-emitting devices fabricated according to Comparative Example 3, Example 3-1, and Comparative Example 3-1, the external quantum efficiency (EQE) and lifetime were evaluated. The results are shown in... Figures 12 to 15 middle.

[0898] First, refer to Figure 12 and 13 In the case of Example 3-1, although some of the triplet excitons generated in SP003 (TADF sensitizer) are lost through FD2, the maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) is higher than that of Comparative Example 3. 最大 The efficiency roll-off (%) increases. Furthermore, instead of minimizing TADF emission, FD2 fluorescence emission can occur, leading to a decrease in exciton lifetime. Therefore, the efficiency roll-off is significantly improved, and at 1000 candela / m² (cd / m²) as the actual luminance... 2 Under these conditions, compared to Comparative Example 3, EQE increased in the opposite direction, and as mentioned above, lifespan increased significantly.

[0899] On the other hand, reference Figure 14 and 15 In the case of Comparative Example 3-1, even compared to Example 3-1 which includes the same amount of dopant, the external quantum efficiency is significantly reduced, and the increase in lifetime compared to Comparative Example 3 is negligible. This is because the triplet excitons generated in SP002 are transferred to FD-A via dexter energy transfer and therefore do not contribute to optical emission, and are degraded due to nonradiative decay.

[0900] Evaluation Example 3: HOD Measurement

[0901] (1) For Examples 1-1, Comparative Example 1, and Comparative Example 1-1, hole-only devices (HODs) were fabricated without stacking an electron transport layer and an electron injection layer on the emitter layer.

[0902] For such HOD devices, the relative HOD value is measured using the method described in this paper. The results are shown in... Figure 16 middle.

[0903] (2) For Examples 2-1, Comparative Example 2, and Comparative Example 2-1, the HOD was manufactured in the same manner as in (1), and for such HOD devices, the relative HOD value of the HOD device was measured using the method substrate described in this specification. The values are shown in... Figure 17 middle.
